Abstract
The development of cardiometabolic (CM) diseases is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, partly linked to alterations of the gut microbiota (GM) and reduced intestinal integrity. The SINFONI project investigates a multifunctional (MF) nutritional strategy's impact combining different bioactive compounds on inflammation, GM modulation and CM profile. In this randomized crossover-controlled study, 30 subjects at CM-risk consumed MF cereal-products, enriched with polyphenols, fibers, slowly-digestible starch, omega-3 fatty acids or Control cereal-products (without bioactive compounds) for 2 months. Metabolic endotoxemia (lipopolysaccharide (LPS), lipopolysaccharide-binding protein over soluble cluster of differentiation-14 (LBP/sCD14), systemic inflammation and cardiovascular risk markers, intestinal inflammation, CM profile and response to a one-week fructose supplementation, were assessed at fasting and post mixed-meal. GM composition and metabolomic analysis were conducted. Mixed linear models were employed, integrating time (pre/post), treatment (MF/control), and sequence/period. Compared to control, MF intervention reduced intestinal inflammation (fecal calprotectin, p = 0.007) and endotoxemia (fasting LPS, p < 0.05), without alteration of systemic inflammation. MF decreased serum branched-chain amino acids compared to control (p < 0.05) and increased B.ovatus, B.uniformis, A.butyriciproducens and unclassified Christensenellaceae.CAG-74 (p < 0.05). CM markers were unchanged. A 2-month dietary intervention combining multiple bioactive compounds improved intestinal inflammation and induced GM modulation. Such strategy appears as an effective strategy to target low-grade inflammation through multi-target approach.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emerging evidence supports gut microbiota's association with mental distress, particularly depression and anxiety, the microbiota-gut-brain axis was the believed to be the underlying mechanism. This study investigated the causal relationships between specific gut microbiota and depression and anxiety disorders using large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) data. METHODS A two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted to explore the causal effects of 211 microbial taxa on depression and anxiety across three large GWAS databases: FinnGen, Pan-UKBB, and PGC. Sensitive analyses were followed to validate the robustness of results. Random-effect meta-analysis was further performed to enhance the statistical power. RESULTS The MR analysis revealed that the Bifidobacteriales (IVW: OR 0.90, 95 %CI 0.83 to 0.98) and Bifidobacteriaceae (IVW: OR 0.90, 95 %CI 0.83 to 0.98) had a protective effect against depression. Clostridiales (cML-MA: OR 0.88, 95 %CI 0.81 to 0.95) and Parasutterella (cML-MA: OR 0.75, 95 %CI 0.64 to 0.88) showed negative associations with depression. Increased abundance of Oxalobacteraceae (cML-MA: OR 1.78, 95 %CI 1.24 to 2.56), Deltaproteobacteria (cML-MA: OR 2.17, 95 %CI 1.38 to 3.40), and Desulfovibrionales (cML-MA: OR 2.22, 95 %CI 1.41 to 3.49) was associated with a higher risk of depression. For anxiety, protective effects were found for Actinobacteria (phylum: IVW: OR 0.83, 95 %CI 0.76 to 0.87; class: IVW: OR 0.84, 95 %CI 0.75 to 0.93), Bifidobacteriales (IVW: OR 0.80, 95 %CI 0.75 to 0.85), Bifidobacteriaceae (IVW: OR 0.80, 95 %CI 0.75 to 0.85) and Bifidobacterium [g] (IVW: OR 0.79, 95 %CI 0.74 to 0.84). Lactobacillaceae [f] (cML-MA: OR 1.18, 95 %CI 1.08 to 1.28), Clostridia [c] (cML-MA: OR 1.15, 95 %CI 0.1.06 to 1.26) and Clostridiales [o] (IVW: OR 1.15, 95 %CI 1.05 to 1.27) were associated with increased anxiety risk. Meta-analysis results indicated significant associations, particularly the protective effects of Actinobacteria (OR 0.90, 95 % CI, 0.83 to 0.98) and Clostridiaceae1 (OR 0.91, 95 % CI, 0.83 to 0.99) on depression and several taxa on anxiety. No significant instrumental variables for depression or anxiety on gut microbiota were identified. CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight specific gut microbiota that are associated with depression and anxiety, underscoring the causal relationships between these intestinal microbes and psychiatric disorders. These results suggest potential strategies for mitigating disease symptoms and improving quality of life through microbiome-targeted therapies. Further studies, including randomized controlled trials and investigations into sex-specific effects, are essential to validate and expand upon these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Circulating linoleic acid (LA) levels have been reported to be associated with various metabolic outcomes. However, the role of LA and its interplay with gut microbiota in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal association between circulating LA levels during pregnancy and the risk of GDM, and the potential role of gut microbiota. METHODS A nested case-control study was conducted within the ongoing Tongji-Huaxi-Shuangliu Birth Cohort in Chengdu, China. Blood and fecal samples were collected during early and middle pregnancy from 807 participants. GDM was diagnosed in middle pregnancy using the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups criteria. Plasma LA levels were measured using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and gut microbiota was analyzed through 16S rRNA gene sequencing and shotgun metagenomic sequencing. A two-sample Mendelian randomization study was conducted using data from the IEU OpenGWAS database and the FinnGen consortium. RESULTS Elevated plasma LA levels were associated with a lower risk of GDM in both early (P for trend = 0.002) and middle pregnancy (P for trend = 0.02). Consistently, Mendelian randomization analysis revealed that each unit increase in LA was associated with a 16% reduction in GDM risk (odds ratio: 0.84, 95% confidence interval: 0.72, 0.95). In early pregnancy, higher plasma LA levels were correlated with higher adiponectin levels (P < 0.001) and lower levels of triglycerides (P < 0.001), HbA1c (P = 0.04), and C-peptide (P = 0.04). The LA-accociated microbiota mediated the relationship between LA and C-peptide (P = 0.01). Additionally, the inverse association between LA and GDM was modified by Bilophila (P for interaction = 0.03), with a stronger association observed in participants with lower Bilophila levels in early pregnancy. Metagenomic analyses further showed that the LA-associated pathway (D-galacturonate degradation I) and its key enzyme (EC 4.2.1.7) were associated with metabolic traits. CONCLUSIONS Our study provides evidence for an inverse causal association between plasma LA levels during pregnancy and GDM risk, which is both mediated and modified by gut microbiota.

Abstract
The gut microbiome and metabolome play crucial roles in renal allograft rejection progression. Integrated multiomics analyses may provide a comprehensive understanding of specific underlying mechanisms, which remain elusive. This study aimed to identify new approaches for clinical renal allograft rejection diagnosis and treatment. Thirty-five patients were divided into three groups: the rejection (n = 16), dysfunction (n = 7), and control (n = 12) groups. Metagenomic sequencing and nontargeted metabolomics were used to analyze stool and plasma samples. Significant microbiota, metabolites, and signaling pathways were identified. LASSO regression was used to construct a diagnostic model, and its diagnostic value was assessed via receiver operating characteristic curves. The microbiota composition and the related genes in the rejection group significantly differed from that in the dysfunction and control groups at the phylum, genus, and species levels (P < 0.001). The core species in the rejection group networks were Escherichia coli and Ruminococcus gnavus, while core species in the dysfunction group networks were Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Bacteroides ovatus. The balance of specific microbial species was associated with kidney function in rejection patients. Spearman analysis revealed that specific differential species like Agathobaculum butyriciproducens and Gemmiger qucibialis were closely linked to the levels of serum 4-pyridoxic acid, 4-acetamidobutanoate, and fecal tryptamine from specific differential pathways. Finally, we constructed four clinical models to distinguish the rejection and dysfunction groups, and the model had excellent diagnostic performance. Altered gut microbiota may contribute to changes in metabolic pathway activity and metabolite abundance in rejection and dysfunction patients, which are strongly correlated with host immunological rejection. The diagnostic model, developed based on the gut microbiota and metabolites, has high clinical value for diagnosing renal rejection. IMPORTANCE This study aimed to screen new markers for non-invasive diagnosis by the gut microbiome and metabolome analysis, providing new insights into rejection mechanisms and identifying new approaches for clinical renal allograft rejection diagnosis.

Abstract
Alcoholic heart disease (AHD) is a severe cardiovascular condition linked to chronic alcohol consumption. This study investigates the effects of a high-fiber diet and acetate on gut microbiota and cardiac function in AHD mouse models. Sixty male C57BL/6 mice were divided into six groups, receiving either a control diet, high-fiber diet, or acetate supplementation alongside alcohol treatment. Results revealed that cardiac fibrosis and heart failure were notably improved in the AHD mice receiving high-fiber or acetate diets. Transcriptomic analyses indicated that dietary interventions modulated the expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism and the TGF-β signaling pathway. Additionally, 16S rRNA sequencing showed that the high-fiber diet and acetate altered gut microbiota composition, enhancing the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Akkermansia muciniphila, Lactobacillus intestinalis, and Bacteroides acidifaciens. These microbes exhibited positive correlations with genes related to fat metabolism and TGF-β signaling, suggesting a potential mechanism for gut microbiota's role in AHD pathology. ROC analysis identified these bacteria as promising biomarkers for AHD detection. Overall, our findings underscore the therapeutic potential of dietary fiber and acetate in modulating gut microbiota and improving cardiac function in AHD, highlighting the intricate relationship between gut health and cardiovascular disease management.

Abstract
240 64-week-old Lohman LSL-Lite laying hens were used to evaluate the effect of ahiflower seed (AS) and its press cake (APC) on egg yolk fatty acid profile, production performance, apparent total tract nutrient digestibility (ATTD), egg quality, eggshell mineral content, and fecal microbiota composition for 12 weeks in a completely randomized design, with 6 replicates of 5 birds in a cage. The diets included a control (CD), CD supplemented with 10 % flaxseed (FS), and CD supplemented with AS at 1, 5, and 10 % inclusion levels and APC at 5, 10, and 15 % inclusion levels. Diet did not affect eggshell Ca (P=0.1168) and P (P=0.8212) levels, and feed conversion ratio (P=0.136), but the 10 % FS reduced body weight gain (P=0.044), hen day egg production (P= 0.000) and feed intake (P<.0001) compared to other treatments. The yolk lightness L* was reduced (P=0.030) by 5 % APC compared to 10 % APC, redness a* was reduced (P= 0.002) by 10 % FS and 15 %APC compared to 10 %APC, CD, and 1 % AS. The 10 % FS and 15 %APC also reduced (P<0.001) yellowness *b compared to 1 %AS and 5 %APC. Apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn) increased (P<0.001) in 10 %FS and all AS and APC levels compared to CD. Compared to CD (87 %), ATTD of energy was increased (P<0.001) in hens fed 10 %FS (93 %), 1 %AS (93 %), and 15 %APC (92 %). However, 10 %FS (78.7 %) and 1 %AS (81.7 %) had higher (P=0.011) ATTD of P than 10 %APC (64.6 %). Similarly, ATTD of Ca was reduced (P<0.001) in hens fed 10 %APC compared to CD and 10 %AS. Compared to other treatments, total n-3 and stearidonic acids were increased (P<0.001) by 10 %FS and 10 %AS, respectively, and the total n-6 FAs and linoleic acid were highest (P=0.001) in 15 %APC. Both 10 %AS and 10 %FS increased (P<0.001) eicosapentaenoic, docosahexaenoic, and alpha-linolenic acid, compared to CD. The n-6/n-3 ratio was reduced (P<0.001) by 10 %FS and 10 %AS compared to APC and CD. Dietary treatments modulated fecal microbiota differently, but notably, Lactobacillus was more abundant when hens were fed 5 %AS compared to other treatments. In conclusion, the dietary supplementation of 10 %AS increased n3-FAs deposition in eggs similar to 10 %FS. However, 10 %FS reduced production performance. All levels of AS and APC increased diet metabolizable energy with no negative effect on production performance.

Abstract
Diclofenac (DCF) exposure is of great concern due to the ecotoxicological risk linked with a decline of vulture populations in Southeast Asia, but also because it can affect the reproduction and neurotoxicity in mammals. Otherwise, selenium (Se) is an antioxidant essential element with key roles in health and with antagonistic action against pollutants, but in some cases with a synergistic effect. To investigate the potential intertwined mechanisms between DCF, Se, and gut microbiota, gut metabolomic and gut microbiota profiles were determined in mice after DCF exposure and Se supplementation. Speciation of selenoproteins in plasma was carried out by isotopic dilution analysis to quantify the levels of selenoproteins. Significant differences in the levels of 79% of the gut metabolites were determined after DCF exposure. The most significant altered pathway in DCF and DCF-Se groups is the primary bile biosynthesis, being the only pathway altered in mice exposed to DCF, while in DCF-Se, the metabolism of galactose and linoleic acid is also altered. Moreover, specific associations between specific gut microbiota and metabolites were determined in the studied mice groups suggesting intertwined mechanisms. Selenium supplementation modulated the gut metabolic and microbiota profiles affected by DCF.

Abstract
Geotrichum candidum, a polymorphic fungus, exists in yeast, mold, and intermediate morphotypes, each with varying genome sizes and phenotypic traits. While G. candidum has been studied as a probiotic in dairy cattle and aquaculture, the differential probiotic potential of its morphotypes has not been fully investigated; therefore, the current study was designed to investigate their impact on the modulation of physiological and gut microbial diversity in BALB/c male mice. In this study, four strains of G. candidum were used, comprising two yeast morphotypes (QAUGC01 and UCMA3730), one mold morphotype (UCMA103), and one intermediate morphotype (UCMA91). BALB/c male mice were administered G. candidum yeast, intermediate, and mold morphotypes via drinking water for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks of experimentation, the yeast morphotype (QAUGC01) notably facilitated healthy weight gain compared to other groups. This was accompanied by significant increases in red blood cell count (p = 0.01). Importantly, QAUGC01 showed no detrimental effects on kidney function, as evidenced by significantly reduced CPK levels (77.25 ± 4.87 U/L) and low cholesterol levels (64.75 ± 0.83 mg/dL). Metagenomic analysis revealed that Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria were predominant bacterial phyla, while Ascomycota and Basidiomycota dominated the fungal populations. Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium were prominent in the gastrointestinal tract of QAUGC01-treated mice, while Lactococcus correlated with intermediate and mold morphotypes. Predictive functional annotation (PICRUSt2) has revealed the maximum relative abundance of metabolic pathways in mold and intermediate-supplemented mice gut. In contrast, the yeast morphotype (UCMA3730) exhibited a higher metabolic pathway activity in the large intestine. Conclusively, yeast morphotypes increase beneficial bacterial diversity, including Brevibacillus and Bacillus, particularly lactic acid bacteria throughout the gastrointestinal tract. These findings suggest that different G. candidum morphotypes have distinct probiotic potentials, with implications for enhancing gut health in food and feed applications.

Abstract
Environmental factors can play fundamental role in health in childhood and adulthood during critical developmental periods like lactation. The maternal intake of probiotics like kefir during lactation could benefit newborns' intestinal health. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of maternal kefir intake during lactation on bacterial breast milk composition and the gut microbiota of offspring Wistar male rats at weaning. Lactating Wistar rats and their pups were divided into four groups based on litter size and maternal kefir intake. Sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene in breast milk revealed the predominance of the Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteriota phyla. Offspring gut microbiota exhibited clustering tendencies in kefir groups with varying genus abundance. Additionally, maternal kefir intake led to increased levels of butyrate acid in offspring faeces (> +30%, p > 0.05). These findings show that the lactation period could be a window of opportunity to program intestinal health through microbiota modulation.

Abstract
1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3), affects enteric glial cells (EGCs) activity, but the mechanism is still unknown. The current study aimed to explore whether 1,25(OH)2D3 could regulate EGCs activity via butyrate pathway in a high-fat diet model. Male C57BL/6 J mice were fed with standard diet (SDD), or vitamin-D-deficient diet (VDD), or high-fat diet (HFD), or HFD plus sodium butyrate (SBR), or HFD plus 1,25(OH)2D3, or HFD plus S100B inhibitor ONO-2506 in vivo. CRL-2690 and Caco-2 cells were treated with palmitic acid (PA) and oleic acid (OA) complex, or S100B, or S100B plus butyric acid (BA) in vitro. 25(OH)D3, 1,25(OH)2D3, TNF-α and S100B concentrations were assayed by enzyme-linked immuno- sorbent assay (ELISA). Colonic mucosal permeability was measured by using FITC-dextran 4 kDa. Colonic butyrate was detected using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results showed HFD decreased serum 25(OH)D3 and 1,25(OH)2D3 concentrations and colonic butyrate generation. 1,25(OH)2D3 supplementation raised butyrate production in the colon. 1,25(OH)2D3 and sodium butyrate supplementation inhibited EGCs to produce S100B and reduced colonic permeability to FITC-dextran. Inhibition of S100B pathway by ONO- 2506 decreased colonic hyperpermeability. In vitro experiments showed butyrate treatment not only reduced S100B and TNF-α secretion from PA/OA-treated CRL-2690 cells, but also decreased the permeability of S100B-treated Caco-2 cells. Collectively, 1,25(OH)2D3 elicited butyrate to suppress EGCs activation, which helped to prevent intestinal barrier injury.

Abstract
Oil supplements have various benefits for metabolism, particularly Sacha inchi oil (SI), which is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as ω-3 and fat-soluble vitamins. However, the impacts of oil supplements on gut health remain unclear. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of an SI supplement with those of lard oil (LO), known for its high saturated fatty acid content, and a normal diet on gut health in male Sprague Dawley rats for 12 consecutive weeks. Fecal DNA was used to assess gut microbiota diversity and species abundance, diversity, and function prediction. Colon tissue from each rat was examined for colon crypt depth and histology. Rats administered the LO supplement exhibited higher dysbiosis than those administered the SI supplement, with the LO supplement influencing the relative abundance of various bacteria at the genus level. A KEGG analysis was conducted to examine the effects on metabolic pathways, revealing that the SI supplement promoted carbohydrate metabolism while reducing immune system activity. In contrast, the LO supplement increased replication, repair, and translation activities. A histological analysis of the colon tissues showed no significant alterations in crypt depth or lesions in all groups, indicating that neither supplement induced adverse structural changes in the gut. The results of this study suggest that SI supplementation modulates the gut microbiota, thereby enhancing gut health and metabolic function.

Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the potential disease prevention and treatment functions of four types of traditional Chinese fermented Sojae Semen Praeparatum (SSP) by analyzing their nutritional active components and their effects on the gut microbiota. Raw soybeans and the four SSPs were administered as dietary supplements to normal SD rats for 6 weeks. Fecal samples were collected at weeks 0, 2, and 6 to assess changes in the gut microbiota. Our results revealed that different fermentation methods resulted in variations in soybean isoflavone content. Fermented soybeans promoted the growth of beneficial microorganisms associated with short-chain fatty acid production in the gut microbiota, such as Christensenellaceae_R_7_group, compared to unfermented soybeans. Supplementation with SSPs fermented with different processes increased the diversity of the rat gut microbiota, except for the fermented group of qingwenjiedu decoction (QW). The dominant gut microbiota in the fermented group of Artemisia Annuae Herba and Mori Folium (QS) exhibited anti-inflammatory effects, while the dominant gut microbiota in the fermented group of Ephedrae Herba and Perillae Folium (MZ) showed antidepressant effects. In the neurotransmitter analysis, MZ reduced gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, the fermented group without Chinese medicine (DD) decreased dopamine levels, and both QS and QW increased norepinephrine levels. Correlation analysis highlighted connections between gut microbiota, neurotransmitters, and chemical levels. The results indicate that SSPs may contribute uniquely to health by maintaining intestinal balance and improving neurological disorders while predicting a potential association between neurotransmitters and gut microbiota by correlation analysis.

Abstract
The phylum Bacillota comprises metabolically diverse bacteria with potential relevance in several fields. Although some genera, such as Bacillus and others, have been extensively studied, the distribution of Bacillota in the environment is still poorly understood. This study aimed to analyze the distribution of Bacillota present in water and sediment samples from different environments. For this purpose, water (W) and sediment (S) samples were collected from different marine environments (Dois Rios Beach - DR, Abraão Beach - AB, Massambaba Beach - MB, and Guanabara Bay - GB), freshwater lagoons (Jacarepiá Lagoon- JL) and hypersaline lagoons (Vermelha Lagoon - VL), all of which are located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The microbial communities present in each sample were determined by sequencing 16S rRNA-encoding genes. The distribution and diversity of Bacillota were analyzed via QIIME2. The results revealed that Bacillota represented an average of 1% of the microbial community of aquatic microbiomes and were unevenly distributed in aquatic water and sediment. The highest abundances of Bacillota were detected in JL_S and VL_S, and the lowest abundances were observed in MB_W and AB_W. Only sequences related to the Bacilli and Clostridia classes were identified. The main Bacillota genera identified were Bacillus and an unidentified Clostridiales order genus. The VL_S and JL_S samples had the highest numbers of exclusive Bacillota genera. On the other hand, 15 Bacillota genera, which are generally observed in the human and animal guts, were found only in anthropogenically impacted GB_W and AB_W. The obtained results revealed how Bacillota are distributed in different aquatic environments.

Abstract
Exploring dietary methods to alter microbial communities and metabolic functions is becoming an increasingly fascinating strategy for improving health. Copra meal hydrolysate (CMH) is alternatively used as a gut health supplement. However, the functional diversity and metabolic activities in gut microbiome in relation to CMH treatment remain largely unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to identify key predominant groups of bacterial species toward diversified metabolic functions, activities, and routes using metaproteomics. As a result, the integrative analysis of metaproteomic data revealed that seven key families across 11 dominant gut bacterial species were concerted. Consistently, across 76,206 proteins assigned to the metabolism of the 255,964 annotated proteins, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) biosynthesis, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) biosynthesis, and bile acid (BA) metabolism were positively associated with CMH. Further identification of cooperative metabolic routes promisingly highlighted the importance of glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, inositol phosphate metabolism, steroid hormone biosynthesis, O-antigen repeat unit biosynthesis, and chloroalkane and chloroalkene degradation. This work presents an initial study of metaproteomics associated with prebiotic diet in a Thai population-based cohort in a developing Southeast Asian country.IMPORTANCEStudies primarily focused on the impact of CMH on gastrointestinal symptoms and gut microbial compositions. However, as the field moves toward understanding the relationship between microbiome and diet in relation to gut health, it is critical to evaluate how changes in metabolic activities relate to cooperative metabolic routes in the gut microbiome for promoting human health. Through the use of metaproteomics, our findings highlighted the key predominant groups of bacterial species, potential proteins, and their metabolic routes involved in gut metabolism. This study provides comprehensive insights into the fundamental relationship between microbiome and dietary supplements and suggests that metaproteomics is a powerful method for monitoring metabolic functions, activities, and routes in the gut microbiome.

Abstract
Eggs serve as a vital source of high-quality protein and lipids in the human diet, contributing significantly to nutritional intake; however, the relation between egg intake and health risks has been controversial. This study aimed to assess the relationship between egg intake and obesity and the effects of the various nutrients in eggs on obesity were separately investigated. This review involved searching Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar for relevant articles from 2002 to 2022. Studies suggested that moderate egg consumption exerts little effect on blood lipid levels, that due to the body regulates endogenous cholesterol production in response to the external cholesterol intake. Furthermore, certain studies also verified that the presence of other nutrients in eggs, such as lecithin, unsaturated fatty acids, and apolipoproteins, not only does not contribute to elevated blood lipids but also plays a role in regulating lipid metabolism to prevent obesity. Additionally, the study reveals that different cooking methods significantly impact the nutritional composition of eggs, with soft-boiled eggs generally being the most advantageous for human health. This article reveals that dietary cholesterol or moderate egg intake was not significantly associated with a higher risk of obesity in healthy adults. Nevertheless, cholesterol-sensitive individuals should ensure moderate cholesterol intake.

Abstract
Introduction Golden Retrievers have a high risk of obesity, which is prevalent in dogs and is associated with inflammation and cancer, impairing the health and life expectancy of companion animals. Microbial and metabolite biomarkers have been proposed for identifying the presence of obesity in humans and rodents. However, the effects of obesity on the microbiome and metabolome of Golden Retrievers remains unknown. Therefore, this study was designed to evaluate the signatures of serum biochemistry indexes, gut microbiota and plasma metabolites in non-obese and obese Golden Retrievers, aiming to recognize potential biomarkers of canine obesity. Methods A total of 8 non-obese (Ctrl group) and 8 obese (Obe group) Golden Retrievers were included in the present study to collect blood and feces samples for measurements. The fecal microbiome and plasma metabolome were determined using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, respectively. Results Results showed that the alanine aminotransferase activity and total bilirubin concentration, which have been measured using serum biochemistry analysis, were higher in the Obe group than in the Ctrl group (p < 0.05). Moreover, there was a significant difference in gut microbiota composition between the two groups (p < 0.05). The phyla Proteobacteria, Fusobacteriota, and Bacteroidota as well as genera Fusobacterium, Prevotella, Faecalibacterium, Escherichia-Shigell, and Alloprevotella were more abundant, while phylum Firmicutes and genera Peptoclostridium, Blautia, Turicibacter, Allobaculum, and Erysipelatoclostridium were less abundant in the Obe group compared to the Ctrl group (p < 0.05). Plasma concentrations of citrulline and 11-dehydrocorticosterone were significantly higher in the Obe group than those in the Ctrl group (p < 0.05). Close correlations between serum biochemistry parameters, gut microbiome, and plasma metabolites were observed in the current study. Conclusion The obesity-induced shifts in serum biochemistry indexes, gut microbiota, and plasma metabolites profiles suggest that obese Golden Retrievers exhibit a different microbiome and metabolome than non-obese ones, and the certain metabolites like citrulline and 11-dehydrocorticosterone could be considered as potential biomarkers to recognize obese Golden Retrievers.

Abstract
The gut microbiome and its metabolites may be important role in regulating the pathogenesis of obesity. This study aimed to characterize the gut microbiome and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) metabolome in obese children. This case-control study recruited children aged 7‒14 years and divided them into a normal group (NG) and an obese group (OG) based on their body mass index. Whole-genome shotgun metagenomic analysis was performed on fecal samples from the OG and NG groups to characterize the signatures and functional potential of the gut microbiota. Serum metabolite profiles were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS). The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, version 26) and R software were used for data analysis. A total of 99 children were recruited, with 49 in the OG and 50 in the NG. At the phylum level, Proteobacteria were significantly more abundant in children in the OG than those in the NG. At the genus level, Oscillibacter and Alistipes were significantly lower in children in the OG than those in the NG. Caproate levels significantly increased, whereas butyrate and isobutyrate levels decreased in children in the OG than those in the NG. Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) functional analysis revealed 28 enriched KEGG pathways, of which/with the phosphotransferase system (PTS) and enhanced biofilm formation by Escherichia coli were particularly significant in the OG. Spearman's correlation analysis indicated that the genus Oscillibacter and species Clostridium_sp._CAG:302 connect serum metabolites and the gut microbiota in childhood obesity. Childhood obesity is correlated with the symbiotic status of the gut microbiota. The microbiota influences human metabolism via specific pathways, particularly butyrate, caproate, and the genus Oscillibacter, all closely associated with obesity.

Abstract
Chitosan, the deacetylated form of chitin, is considered a valuable source of compounds in the feed and food industries. However, the impact of Hermetia illucens larvae chitosan (HCS) with specific physicochemical characteristics on obesity mediated by lipid accumulation and microbiome dysbiosis has not been fully elucidated. We purified HCS with a low molecular weight (84 kDa), low crystallinity, and a high deacetylation rate, characterizing it through several analytical techniques, including gel permeation chromatography, FT-IR, 1H NMR, FE-SEM, and XRD analysis. HCS effectively inhibited the differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes by suppressing the production of reactive oxygen species. The adipogenic signaling of preadipocytes, mediated by the phosphorylation of mTOR and PPARγ, which are essential for the expression of fatty acid synthase, was attenuated by HCS. In mouse models fed high-fat diets, the oral administration of HCS prevented changes in white adipose tissue and liver weight and reduced plasma levels of total cholesterol. Additionally, the analysis of the microbiota using 16S rRNA revealed that HCS improved dysbiosis by modulating the composition and abundance of specific bacterial genera, including F. rodentium, L. gasseri, L. reuteri, and L. murinus. These findings highlight the potential of HCS as a candidate for the treatment of obesity-related metabolic diseases.

Abstract
The effects of three dietary oils (rapeseed oil, camellia oil, linseed oil) with different fatty acid compositions on the growth performance, digestion and gut microbiota of SD rats after 8 weeks of feeding were studied. The serum metabolic index and liver histomorphology of rats were measured using an automatic biochemical analyzer and light microscope. Furthermore, 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing technology was used to analyze the gut microbiota. It was found that these differences in fatty acid composition had no significant effect on body fat and liver tissue. However, after digestion, the rapeseed oil group showed lowest triglyceride content (1.22 ± 0.15) and a lower LDL/HDL ratio (0.41 ± 0.02). For gut microbiota distribution, the linseed oil group showed a higher Firmicutes/Bacteroides ratio (6.11 ± 0.54) and a high proportion of Lactobacillus. These data indicate that both the unsaturated fatty acid content and n-3 unsaturated fatty acids collectively had an effect on digestion metabolism, and the influence order may be n-3 unsaturated fatty acids > unsaturated fatty acid content.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of short-term exposure of Bisphenol A (BPA) on the growth and lactation performance, blood parameters, and milk composition of lactating rabbits and explore its potential molecular mechanisms. Eight lactating rabbits with similar body weight were selected and randomly divided into the experimental group (BPA) and the control group (Ctrl). The group BPA was orally administered 80 mg/kg/day BPA on the 15th day postpartum, while the group Ctrl received a corresponding volume of vehicle. Blood and milk samples were collected after 7 days treatment. The results showed that short-term ingestion of BPA did not obviously alter the body weight, feed intake, or milk yield of the lactating rabbits. ELISA assays indicated that BPA did not significantly affect the plasma levels of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), creatinine (CRE), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), uric acid (UA), and urea. Utilizing untargeted metabolomics, we first depicted the metabolomic profile of rabbit milk, and identified 277 differential metabolites (DMs), with 141 DMs upregulated (e.g., BPA, and its metabolites including Cetirizine N-oxide) and 136 DMs downregulated (e.g., Oleamide, Tiglic acid, PC O-38:4) in the group BPA. KEGG analysis revealed that the DMs were mainly enriched in pathways comprising fatty acid metabolism, fatty acid degradation, and phosphatidylinositol signaling system, emphasizing the effect of BPA on milk fat metabolism. Hence, we established the BPA-induced MAC-T model, and the results showed that BPA significantly reduced cell viability and impacted lipid synthesis, as evidenced by reduced lipid droplets (BODIPY and Oil Red O staining) and decreased expression of genes related to lipid synthesis (e.g., PPARγ, ACACA, LPL). In summary, we first drew the metabolomic profile of rabbit milk and confirmed that short-term BPA exposure impacted mammary lipid synthesis, thereby reducing the milk quality of lactating rabbits and providing fundamental data for resolving the toxicological mechanisms of BPA on mammal lactation.

Abstract
Recent studies have revealed that dysbiosis, defined as alterations in gut microbiota, plays an important role in the development and the progression of many non-communicable diseases, including metabolic disorders, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The high frequency of GDM makes this disorder an important public health issue, which needs to be addressed in order to reduce both the maternal and fetal complications that are frequently associated with this disease. The studies regarding the connections between gut dysbiosis and GDM are still in their early days, with new research continuously emerging. This narrative review seeks to outline the mechanisms through which a healthy diet that protects the gut microbiota is able to prevent the occurrence of GDM, thus providing medical nutritional therapeutic perspectives for the management of GDM.

Abstract
Growing evidence demonstrates the connection between gut microbiota, neurodevelopment, and adult brain function. Microbial colonization occurs before the maturation of neural systems and its association with brain development. The early microbiome interactions with the gut-brain axis evolved to stimulate cognitive activities. Gut dysbiosis can lead to impaired brain development, growth, and function. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is critically required for brain structure and function, modulates gut microbiota, and impacts brain activity. This review explores how gut microbiota influences early brain development and adult functions, encompassing the modulation of neurotransmitter activity, neuroinflammation, and blood-brain barrier integrity. In addition, it highlights processes of how the gut microbiome affects fetal neurodevelopment and discusses adult brain disorders.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis are chronic skin diseases with a global impact, posing significant challenges to public health systems and severely affecting patients' quality of life. This review delves into the key role of the gut microbiota in these diseases, emphasizing the importance of the gut-skin axis in inflammatory mediators and immune regulation and revealing a complex bidirectional communication system. We comprehensively assessed the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, and treatment strategies for AD and psoriasis, with a particular focus on how the gut microbiota and their metabolites influence disease progression via the gut-skin axis. In addition, personalized treatment plans based on individual patient microbiome characteristics have been proposed, offering new perspectives for future treatment approaches. We call for enhanced interdisciplinary cooperation to further explore the interactions between gut microbiota and skin diseases and to assess the potential of drugs and natural products in modulating the gut-skin axis, aiming to advance the treatment of skin diseases.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is a progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle and functions associated with ageing with currently no definitive treatment. Alterations in gut microbial composition have emerged as a significant contributor to the pathophysiology of multiple diseases. Recently, its association with muscle health has pointed to its potential role in mediating sarcopenia. The current review focuses on the association of gut microbiota and mediators of muscle health, connecting the dots between the influence of gut microbiota and their metabolites on biomarkers of sarcopenia. It further delineates the mechanism by which the gut microbiota affects muscle health with progressing age, aiding the formulation of a multi-modal treatment plan involving nutritional supplements and pharmacological interventions along with lifestyle changes compiled in the review. Nutritional supplements containing proteins, vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, creatine, curcumin, kefir, and ursolic acid positively impact the gut microbiome. Dietary fibres foster a conducive environment for the growth of beneficial microbes such as Bifidobacterium, Faecalibacterium, Ruminococcus, and Lactobacillus. Probiotics and prebiotics act by protecting against reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inflammatory cytokines. They also increase the production of gut microbiota metabolites like short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which aid in improving muscle health. Foods rich in polyphenols are anti-inflammatory and have an antioxidant effect, contributing to a healthier gut. Pharmacological interventions like faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), ghrelin mimetics, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs), and butyrate precursors lead to the production of anti-inflammatory fatty acids and regulate appetite, gut motility, and microbial impact on gut health. Further research is warranted to deepen our understanding of the interaction between gut microbiota and muscle health for developing therapeutic strategies for ameliorating sarcopenic muscle loss.

Abstract
The gut microbiota influences physiological functions of the host, ranging from the maintenance of local gut homeostasis to systemic immunity and metabolism. Secreted phospholipase A2 group X (sPLA2-X) is abundantly expressed in colonic epithelial cells but is barely detectable in metabolic and immune tissues. Despite this distribution, sPLA2-X-deficient (Pla2g10-/-) mice displayed variable obesity-related phenotypes that were abrogated after treatment with antibiotics or cohousing with Pla2g10+/+ mice, suggesting the involvement of the gut microbiota. Under housing conditions where Pla2g10-/- mice showed aggravation of diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance, they displayed increased colonic inflammation and epithelial damage, reduced production of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and lysophospholipids, decreased abundance of several Clostridium species, and reduced levels of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These obesity-related phenotypes in Pla2g10-/- mice were reversed by dietary supplementation with ω3 PUFAs or SCFAs. Thus, colonic sPLA2-X orchestrates ω3 PUFA-SCFA interplay via modulation of the gut microbiota, thereby secondarily affecting systemic metabolism.

Abstract
Background High-fat diet (HFD)-induced hyperlipidemia, which is associated with gut microbiota disturbances, remains a major public health challenge. Glycerolipid metabolism is responsible for lipid synthesis and is thus involved in the development of hyperlipidemia. However, possible association between the HFD-modulated gut microbiome and the glycerolipid metabolism pathway remains unclear. Methods Hamsters were fed a HFD for 4 weeks to establish a hyperlipidemia model. Fecal, plasma and liver samples collected from hamsters fed a HFD or a normal chow diet (NCD) were used for integrative metagenomic and untargeted metabolomic analyses to explore changes in the composition and functions of the gut microbiota, and relevant metabolites. Spearman rank correlation analysis was used to explore correlations between gut microbes and circulating glycerolipid metabolites, gut microbes and lipids, and circulating glycerolipid metabolites and lipids. Results The gut microbial composition of HFD hamsters showed significant alterations at the phylum, genus, and species levels that were skewed toward metabolic disorders compared with that of NCD hamsters. Functional characterization by KEGG analysis identified enrichment of the glycerolipid metabolism pathway in the gut microbiome of HFD hamsters. Plasma and liver metabolomics further indicated the upregulation and enrichment of glycerolipid metabolites in HFD hamsters. The Faecalibaculum, Allobaculum, and Eubacterium genera were positively correlated with plasma glycerolipid metabolites and lipid indices. Conclusion The findings of this study suggest an association between glycerolipid metabolism and the HFD-modulated gut microbiome that is involved in the development of hyperlipidemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND obesity is a worldwide problem that seriously endangers human health. Canola oil (Col) has been reported to regulate hepatic steatosis by influencing oxidative stress and lipid metabolism in Kunming mice. However, whether Col exhibits an anti-obesity effect by altering the gut microbiota remains unknown. METHODS in this study, we observed that a high-fat diet increased lipogenesis and gut microbiota disorder in C57BL/6J male mice, while the administration of Col suppressed lipogenesis and improved gut microbiota disorder. RESULTS the results show that Col markedly reduced the final body weight and subcutaneous adipose tissue of C57BL/6J male mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) after 6 weeks of administration. However, although Col did not effectively increase the serum concentration of HDL, we found that treatment with Col notably inhibited the low-density lipoprotein (LDL), total cholesterol (TC), and triglycerides (TGs) in HFD mice. Furthermore, Col ameliorated obesity in the liver compared to mice that were only fed a high-fat diet. We also found that Col significantly inhibited the relative expression of sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP1/2), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), and insulin-induced genes (Insig1/2) that proved to be closely associated with lipogenesis in HFD mice. In addition, the concentration of acetic acid was significantly increased in Col-treatment HFD mice. Further, we noted that Col contributed to the reprogramming of the intestinal microbiota. The relative abundances of Akkermansia, Dubosiella, and Alistipes were enhanced under treatment with Col in HFD mice. The results also imply that Col markedly elevated the phosphorylation level of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway in HFD mice. CONCLUSIONS the results of our study show that Col ameliorates obesity and suppresses lipogenesis in HFD mice. The underlying mechanisms are possibly associated with the reprogramming of the gut microbiota, in particular, the acetic acid-mediated increased expression of Alistipes via the AMPK signaling pathway.

Abstract
The intestine is populated by a complex and dynamic assortment of microbes, collectively called gut microbiota, that interact with the host and contribute to its metabolism and physiology. Diet is considered a key regulator of intestinal microbiota, as ingested nutrients interact with and shape the resident microbiota composition. Furthermore, recent studies underscore the interplay of dietary and microbiota-derived nutrients, which directly impinge on intestinal stem cells regulating their turnover to ensure a healthy gut barrier. Although advanced sequencing methodologies have allowed the characterization of the human gut microbiome, mechanistic studies assessing diet-microbiota-host interactions depend on the use of genetically tractable models, such as Drosophila melanogaster. In this review, we first discuss the similarities between the human and fly intestines and then we focus on the effects of diet and microbiota on nutrient-sensing signaling cascades controlling intestinal stem cell self-renewal and differentiation, as well as disease. Finally, we underline the use of the Drosophila model in assessing the role of microbiota in gut-related pathologies and in understanding the mechanisms that mediate different whole-body manifestations of gut dysfunction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have demonstrated associations between fatty acids and neurological disorders. However, no studies have examined the relationship between serum fatty acid levels and serum neurofilament light chain (NfL), a biomarker of neurological disorders. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to comprehensively investigate the intricate relationship between 30 serum fatty acids and serum NfL levels in a nationally representative sample of United States adults, using data from the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. METHODS Using a cross-sectional analysis, multivariable linear regression models were used to explore the associations between 30 serum fatty acids and serum NfL levels. This analysis involved adjustment for potential confounding variables, including age, sex, race, body mass index (BMI), smoking status, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes, to clarify the association between serum fatty acids and serum NfL levels. RESULTS The analysis revealed that certain fatty acids exhibited distinct associations with serum NfL levels. Notably, docosanoic acid (22:0) and tricosanoic acid (C23:0) were found to be inversely associated with serum NfL levels (β = -0.280, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.525, -0.035; β = -0.292, 95% CI: -0.511, -0.072). Conversely, palmitoleic acid (16:1n-7) demonstrated a positive association with serum NfL levels (β = 0.125, 95% CI: 0.027, 0.222). Notably, these associations remained significant even after adjustment for potential confounders. CONCLUSIONS Individuals with high relative concentrations of certain SFA exhibited decreased serum NfL, whereas those with high relative concentrations of certain monounsaturated fatty acids showed increased serum NfL. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the potential impact of serum fatty acids on NfL levels, shedding light on novel avenues for further investigation and potential interventions in the context of neurological health.

Abstract
The gut microbiome may be related to the prevalence of overweight and obesity, but high interindividual variability of the human microbiome complicates our understanding. Obesity often occurs concomitantly with micronutrient deficiencies that impair energy metabolism. Microbiota composition is affected by diet. Host-microbiota interactions are bidirectional. We propose three pathways whereby these interactions may modulate the gut microbiome and obesity: (1) ingested compounds or derivatives affecting small intestinal transit, endogenous secretions, digestion, absorption, microbiome balance, and gut barrier function directly affect host metabolism; (2) substrate availability affecting colonic microbial composition and contact with the gut barrier; and (3) microbial end products affecting host metabolism. The quantity/concentration, duration, and/or frequency (circadian rhythm) of changes in these pathways can alter the gut microbiome, disrupt the gut barrier, alter host immunity, and increase the risk of and progression to overweight and obesity. Host-specific characteristics (e.g., genetic variations) may further affect individual sensitivity and/or resilience to diet- and microbiome-associated perturbations in the colonic environment. In this narrative review, the effects of selected interventions, including fecal microbiota transplantation, dietary calorie restriction, dietary fibers and prebiotics, probiotics and synbiotics, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids, on the gut microbiome, body weight, and/or adiposity are summarized to help identify mechanisms of action and research opportunities.

Abstract
The increasing prevalence of obesity-related glomerulopathy (ORG) poses a significant threat to public health. Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors effectively reduce body weight and total fat mass in individuals with obesity and halt the progression of ORG. However, the underlying mechanisms of their reno-protective effects in ORG remain unclear. We established a high-fat diet-induced ORG model using C57BL/6J mice, which were divided into three groups: normal chow diet (NCD group), high-fat diet (HFD) mice treated with placebo (ORG group), and HFD mice treated with empagliflozin (EMPA group). We conducted 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing of feces and analyzed metabolites from kidney, feces, liver, and serum samples. ORG mice showed increased urinary albumin creatinine ratio, cholesterol, triglyceride levels, and glomerular diameter compared with NCD mice (all P < 0.05). EMPA treatment significantly alleviated these parameters (all P < 0.05). Multitissue metabolomics analysis revealed lipid metabolic reprogramming in ORG mice, which was significantly altered by EMPA treatment. MetOrigin analysis showed a close association between EMPA-related lipid metabolic pathways and gut microbiota alterations, characterized by reduced abundances of Firmicutes and Desulfovibrio and increased abundance of Akkermansia (all P < 0.05). The metabolic homeostasis of ORG mice, especially in lipid metabolism, was disrupted and closely associated with gut microbiota alterations, contributing to the progression of ORG. EMPA treatment improved kidney function and morphology by regulating lipid metabolism through the gut-kidney axis, highlighting a novel therapeutic approach for ORG. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Our study uncovered that empagliflozin (EMPA) potentially protects renal function and morphology in obesity-related glomerulopathy (ORG) mice by regulating the gut-kidney axis. EMPA's reno-protective effects in ORG mice are associated with the lipid metabolism, especially in glycerophospholipid metabolism and the pantothenate/CoA synthesis pathways. EMPA's modulation of gut microbiota appears to be pivotal in suppressing glycerol 3-phosphate and CoA synthesis. The insights into gut microbiota-host metabolic interactions offer a novel therapeutic approach for ORG.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of mortality in industrialized countries, with over 500 million people affected worldwide. In this work, the roles of low-molecular-weight metabolites originating from the gut microbiome, such as short-chain fatty acids, hydrogen sulfide, trimethylamine, phenylacetic acid, secondary bile acids, indoles, different gases, neurotransmitters, vitamins, and complex lipids, are discussed in relation to their CVD-promoting or preventing activities. Molecules of mixed microbial and human hepatic origin, such as trimethylamine N-oxide and phenylacetylglutamine, are also presented. Finally, dietary agents with cardioprotective effects, such as probiotics, prebiotics, mono- and poly-unsaturated fatty acids, carotenoids, and polyphenols, are also discussed. A special emphasis is given to their gut microbiota-modulating properties.

Abstract
Heat stress (HS) disrupts intestinal microbiota, glycolipid metabolism, and hepatic mitochondrial function in late gestational mice. Baicalin (BAI), a Chinese herbal medicine known for its heat-clearing and anti-inflammatory properties, has shown promise in modulating intestinal microecology and mitigating inflammation in various organs. This study investigates whether baicalin attenuates HS-induced intestinal microbial dysbiosis and liver damage in pregnant mice during late gestation. Twenty-four pregnant mice were randomly assigned to four groups, including thermoneutral (TN) (24 ± 1 ℃), HS (35 ± 1 ℃), HS+BAI200 (oral gavaged with 200 mg/kg BW of BAI), and HS+BAI400 (oral gavaged with 400 mg/kg BW of BAI). 400 mg/kg BAI treatment markedly decreased the rectal temperature and increased fetal weight in HS pregnant mice. Furthermore, 400 mg/kg BAI administration effectively ameliorated HS-induced hepatic damage and lipid disorders, reducing HSP70, AST, and ALT levels while increasing TG concentration. Notably, it activated a network of genes involved in lipid synthesis, including fatty acid synthase (FAS), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), and oxidation, such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), carnitine palmityl transferase 1 beta (CPT1β). Moreover, BAI intervention restored the intestinal morphology and barrier function, evidenced by increased intestinal villus height, the ratio of villus height to crypt depth, and colonic goblet cells numbers. 400 mg/kg of BAI treatment up-regulated the expression of tight junction proteins, such as claudin-1 and Zonula Occludens-1 (ZO-1), in the jejunum and ileum, counteracting HS-induced downregulation. High-throughput sequencing showed that BAI treatment altered cecal microbial composition, increasing the relative abundance of beneficial Bacteroidota and decreasing Deferribacterota, Turicibacter, and Akkermansia. Spearman's correlation analysis highlighted significant correlations between differential cecal microbiota and physiological indexes. In conclusion, BAI administration alleviated adverse impacts in heat-exposed mice during late gestation, improving maternal physiological parameters, and ameliorating hepatic damage with altered cecal microbial composition. The findings suggest that BAI may regulate the gut-liver axis by modulating intestinal morphology, microecology, and hepatic function.

Abstract
Strawberries provide a number of potential health promoting phytonutrients to include phenolics, polyphenols, fiber, micronutrients and vitamins. The objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive summary of recent human studies pertaining to the intake of strawberry and strawberry phytonutrients on human health. A literature search conducted through PubMed and Cochrane databases consolidated studies focusing on the effects of strawberry intake on human health. Articles were reviewed considering pre-determined inclusion and exclusion criteria, including experimental or observational studies that focused on health outcomes, and utilized whole strawberries or freeze-dried strawberry powder (FDSP), published between 2000-2023. Of the 60 articles included in this review, 47 were clinical trials, while 13 were observational studies. A majority of these studies reported on the influence of strawberry intake on cardiometabolic outcomes. Study designs included those examining the influence of strawberry intake during the postprandial period, short-term trials randomized with a control, or a single arm intake period controlling with a low polyphenolic diet or no strawberry intake. A smaller proportion of studies included in this review examined the influence of strawberry intake on additional outcomes of aging including bone and brain health, and cancer risk. Data support that the inclusion of strawberries into the diet can have positive impacts during the postprandial period, with daily intake improving outcomes of lipid metabolism and inflammation in those at increased cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the influence of black soldier fly larvae oil calcium salt (BSFLO-SCa) supplementation on performance, jejunal histomorphology and gene expression of tight junctions and inflammatory cytokines in laying hens. A total of 60 ISA Brown laying hens (40 wk of age) were divided into 3 treatment groups, including a control group fed a basal diet (T0) and basal diets supplemented with 1% (T1) and 2% (T2) of BSFLO-SCa. Each treatment group consisted of 5 replicates with 4 laying hens each. Results showed that 1% and 2% BSFLO-SCa supplementation significantly reduced (P < 0.05) feed conversion ratio (FCR), while egg weight (EW) increased (P < 0.05). The inclusion with 2% increased (P < 0.05) both egg production (HDA) and mass (EM). The addition of 1% and 2% BSFLO-SCa significantly increased (P < 0.05) villus height (VH) and villus width (VW), while crypt depth (CD) significantly increased (P < 0.05) with 2% BSFLO-SCa. The tight junction and gene expression of claudin-1 (CLDN-1), junctional adhesion molecules-2 (JAM-2), and occludin (OCLN) were significantly upregulated (P < 0.05) with 2% BSFLO-SCa. The pro-inflammatory cytokines and gene expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6) was significantly downregulated (P < 0.05) with the addition of BSFLO-SCa, while gene expression of interleukin-18 (IL-18), toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were downregulated with 2% BSFLO-SCa. On the other hand, the anti-inflammatory cytokines and gene expression of interleukin-13 (IL-13) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) were significantly upregulated (P < 0.05) at 2% BSFLO-SCa. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with 2% BSFLO-SCa improved productivity, intestinal morphology and integrity by upregulating tight junction-related protein of gene expression of laying hens. In addition, supplementation with BSFLO-SCa enhanced intestinal immune responses by upregulating anti-inflammatory and downregulating pro-inflammatory cytokine gene expression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to different concentration levels of fatty acids (FAs) may have an impact on depression. However, previous studies using individual FAs may not reflect the performance of mixtures of various FAs, and the associations of FA patterns with depression remain unclear. METHODS We conducted the cross-sectional analysis in 792 adults aged 18 and older with available serum FAs and depression screening data in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2012. The serum concentrations of thirty FAs were measured using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and their percentage compositions were subsequently calculated. Depression was defined as the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score ≥ 10. We employed principal component analysis to derive serum FA patterns. We examined the association between these patterns and depression in the overall population and various subgroups through survey-weighted logistic regression. RESULTS Four distinct patterns of serum FAs were identified: 'high eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA); low docosatetraenoic acid (DTA) and docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) n-6', 'high long-chain saturated FA and long chain FA', 'low median-chain saturated FA and myristoleic acid' and 'low capric acid and lauric acid; high gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and stearidonic acid (SDA)' pattern. Individuals in the high tertile of 'high EPA and DHA; low DTA and DPA n-6' pattern score had 0.46 (95% CI: 0.22, 0.93) lower odds of developing depression compared to individuals in the lowest tertile after adjusting for confounders such as age, sex, physical activity and total energy intake, etc. The odds ratio (OR) of depression was increased in the population with the highest tertile of 'low capric acid and lauric acid; high GLA and SDA' pattern (OR: 2.45, 95% CI: 1.24, 4.83). In subgroup analyses, we observed that the association between 'high EPA and DHA; low DTA and DPA n-6' and depression persisted among specific demographic and lifestyle subgroups, including females, non-Mexican Americans, non-obese, those aged over 60 years, smokers and drinkers. Similarly, 'low capric acid and lauric acid; high GLA and SDA' showed stable associations in female, non-Mexican Americans and smokers. CONCLUSIONS Serum FA patterns are associated with depression, and their relationships vary across sex, race, BMI, age, smoking and drinking subgroups, highlighting the importance of considering specific FA patterns within these demographic and lifestyle categories. Utilization of combined FA administration may serve as a mitigation measure against depression in these specific populations.

Abstract
The influence of gut microbiota in the onset and development of several metabolic diseases has gained attention over the last few years. Diet plays an essential role in gut microbiota modulation. Western diet (WD), characterized by high-sugar and high-fat consumption, alters gut microbiome composition, diversity index, microbial relative levels, and functional pathways. Despite the promising health effects demonstrated by polyunsaturated fatty acids, their impact on gut microbiota is still overlooked. The effect of Fish oil (omega-3 source) and Pomegranate oil (punicic acid source), and a mixture of both oils in gut microbiota modulation were determined by subjecting the oil samples to in vitro fecal fermentations. Cecal samples from rats from two different dietary groups: a control diet (CD) and a high-fat high-sugar diet (WD), were used as fecal inoculum. 16S amplicon metagenomics sequencing showed that Fish oil + Pomegranate oil from the WD group increased α-diversity. This sample can also increase the relative abundance of the Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes phylum as well as Akkermansia and Blautia, which were affected by the WD consumption. All samples were able to increase butyrate and acetate concentration in the WD group. Moreover, tyrosine concentrations, a precursor for dopamine and norepinephrine, increase in the Fish oil + Pomegranate oil WD sample. GABA, an important neurotransmitter, was also increased in WD samples. These results suggest a potential positive impact of these oils' mixture on gut-brain axis modulation. It was demonstrated, for the first time, the great potential of using a mixture of both Fish and Pomegranate oil to restore the gut microbiota changes associated with WD consumption.

Abstract
Pinctada martensii hydrolysate (PMH) has been proved to have the effect of ameliorating disorders of glucose and lipid metabolism in db/db mice, but the mechanism of its hyperglycemia effect is still unclear. Bacterial communities in fecal samples from a normal control group, a diabetic control group, and a PMH-treated diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM) group were analyzed by 16S gene sequencing. Nano LC-MS/MS was used to analyze mice neuropeptides and proteomes. The 16S rDNA sequencing results showed that PMH modulated the structure and composition of the gut microbiota and improved the structure and composition of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes at the phylum level and Desulfovibrionaceae and Erysipelatoclostridiaceae at the family level. Furthermore, the expressions of functional proteins of the central nervous system, immune response-related protein, and proteins related to fatty acid oxidation in the brain disrupted by an abnormal diet were recovered by PMH. PMH regulates the brain neuropeptidome and proteome and further regulates blood glucose in diabetic mice through the gut-brain axis. PMH may be used as a prebiotic agent to attenuate T2DM, and target-specific microbial species may have unique therapeutic promise for metabolic diseases.

Abstract
In the presented study, natural rice containing high resistant starch content was used as a raw material to produce rice resistant starch (RRS) through enzymatic hydrolysis with heat-stable α-amylase and glucoamylase. The chemical composition, structural characteristics and in vitro glycemic index (GI) of RRS were evaluated. The effects of RRS at different doses on the body weight, serum biochemical levels, pathological indexes, production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the gut and the intestinal microbial composition in T2DM mice were investigated. The results of physiochemical characterization indicated that, relative to rice flour, RRS mainly comprising resistant starch had higher crystallinity (25.85%) and a more stable structure, which contributed to its lower digestibility and decreased GI in vitro. Compared with the model control group, 1 g per kg BW and 2 g per kg BW oral gavage dosages of RRS effectively enhanced the SCFA productivity in the T2DM mouse gut, as well as alleviating T2DM symptoms, involving an increase in body weight, reduction in fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, alanine transaminase and aspartate aminotransferase, and an increase in serum insulin and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Besides, 1 g per kg BW and 2 g per kg BW dosages of RRS mitigated T2DM-induced pancreas damage. Furthermore, up-regulation in the abundance of probiotics (Lactobacillus, Ruminococcus, etc.) and down-regulation in the number of harmful bacteria (Desulfovibrio, Prevotella, etc.) were observed in all RRS-treated groups. In summary, this work suggested that RRS prepared using heat-stable α-amylase and glucoamylase could be a potential functional component for amelioration of T2DM applied in the fields of food and pharmaceutics.

Abstract
BACKGRUOUND Gut microbiota is closely related to the occurrence and development of diabetes and affects the prognosis of diabetic complications, and the underlying mechanisms are only partially understood. We aimed to explore the possible link between the gut microbiota and vascular inflammation of diabetic mice. METHODS The db/db diabetic and wild-type (WT) mice were used in this study. We profiled gut microbiota and examined the and vascular function in both db/db group and WT group. Gut microbiota was analyzed by 16s rRNA sequencing. Vascular function was examined by ultrasonographic hemodynamics and histological staining. Clostridium butyricum (CB) was orally administered to diabetic mice by intragastric gavage every 2 days for 2 consecutive months. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and expression of nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) were detected by fluorescence microscopy. The mRNA expression of inflammatory cytokines was tested by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS Compared with WT mice, CB abundance was significantly decreased in the gut of db/db mice, together with compromised vascular function and activated inflammation in the arterial tissue. Meanwhile, ROS in the vascular tissue of db/db mice was also significantly increased. Oral administration of CB restored the protective microbiota, and protected the vascular function in the db/db mice via activating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. CONCLUSION This study identified the potential link between decreased CB abundance in gut microbiota and vascular inflammation in diabetes. Therapeutic delivery of CB by gut transplantation alleviates the vascular lesions of diabetes mellitus by activating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway.

Abstract
The Italian pig sector requires heavy pigs (raised for at least nine months and slaughtered at >160 kg). In order to avoid boar taint and lower the impact on welfare, immunocastration provides an alternative to surgical castration. This study investigated the effects of immunocastration compared to surgical castration on the chemical composition and fatty acid profile of loins (longissimus dorsi muscle) and adipose tissue in Italian heavy pigs raised for dry-cured ham. Twenty-four male pigs were subjected to surgical castration (n = 12) or immunocastration (n = 12). Carcass parameters were monitored at slaughter, and samples of longissimus dorsi muscle and subcutaneous fat were analysed. This study showed no significant differences in carcass characteristics and proximate composition of fresh meat. However, variations were observed in the fatty acid profiles of meat and adipose tissue between groups. Notably, saturated fatty acids, particularly stearic acid (18:0), were higher in the intramuscular fat (IMF) of the immunocastrated pigs compared to the surgically castrated pigs. Conversely, monounsaturated fatty acids, predominantly oleic acid (18:1n-9), were higher in the IMF from the surgically castrated pigs compared to the immunocastrated pigs. While immunocastration may offer benefits in terms of animal growth and carcass composition, it could lead to unfavourable lipid changes in fresh loin meat for Italian heavy pigs.

Abstract
ABSTRACT CPX-351, a liposomal combination of cytarabine plus daunorubicin, has been approved for the treatment of adults with newly diagnosed, therapy-related acute myeloid leukemia (AML) or AML with myelodysplasia-related changes, because it improves survival and outcome of patients who received hematopoietic stem cell transplant compared with the continuous infusion of cytarabine plus daunorubicin (referred to as "7 + 3" combination). Because gut dysbiosis occurring in patients with AML during induction chemotherapy heavily affects the subsequent phases of therapy, we have assessed whether the superior activity of CPX-351 vs "7 + 3" combination in the real-life setting implicates an action on and by the intestinal microbiota. To this purpose, we have evaluated the impact of CPX-351 and "7 + 3" combination on mucosal barrier function, gut microbial composition and function, and antifungal colonization resistance in preclinical models of intestinal damage in vitro and in vivo and fecal microbiota transplantation. We found that CPX-351, at variance with "7 + 3" combination, protected from gut dysbiosis, mucosal damage, and gut morbidity while increasing antifungal resistance. Mechanistically, the protective effect of CPX-351 occurred through pathways involving both the host and the intestinal microbiota, namely via the activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor-interleukin-22 (IL-22)-IL-10 host pathway and the production of immunomodulatory metabolites by anaerobes. This study reveals how the gut microbiota may contribute to the good safety profile, with a low infection-related mortality, of CPX-351 and highlights how a better understanding of the host-microbiota dialogue may contribute to pave the way for precision medicine in AML.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES The relationship between gut microbiota and changes in body mass index (BMI) or pediatric overweight in early life remains unclear, and information regarding the preterm population is scarce. This study aimed to investigate how the gut microbiota at 3.5 years of age is associated with (1) later BMI at 5 years, and (2) BMI z-score variations between 2 and 5 years in children from two French nationwide birth cohorts. SUBJECTS/METHODS Bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed to profile the gut microbiota at 3.5 years of age in preterm children (n = 143, EPIPAGE 2 cohort) and late preterm/full-term children (n = 369, ELFE cohort). The predicted abundances of metabolic functions were computed using PICRUSt2. Anthropometric measurements were collected at 2 and 5 years of age during medical examinations or retrieved from children's health records. Statistical analyses included multivariable linear and logistic regressions, random forest variable selection, and MiRKAT. RESULTS The Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes (F/B) ratio at 3.5 years was positively associated with the BMI z-score at 5 years. Several genera were positively ([Eubacterium] hallii group, Fusicatenibacter, and [Eubacterium] ventriosum group) or negatively (Eggerthella, Colidextribacter, and Ruminococcaceae CAG-352) associated with the BMI z-scores at 5 years. Some genera were also associated with variations in the BMI z-scores between 2 and 5 years of age. Predicted metabolic functions, including steroid hormone biosynthesis, biotin metabolism, glycosaminoglycan degradation, and amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, were associated with lower BMI z-scores at 5 years. The unsaturated fatty acids biosynthesis pathway was associated with higher BMI z-scores. CONCLUSIONS These findings indicate that the gut microbiota at 3.5 years is associated with later BMI during childhood, independent of preterm or term birth, suggesting that changes in the gut microbiota that may predispose to adult obesity begin in early childhood.

Abstract
How the particle size and concentration of microplastics impact their toxicity is largely unknown. Herein, the effects of polystyrene microplastics (1 μm, MPs) and nanoplastics (100 nm, NPs) exposed at 1 mg/L (L) and 10 mg/L (H), respectively, on the growth, histopathology, oxidative stress, gut microbiome, and metabolism of rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) were investigated by chemical analysis and multi-omics. MPs and NPs inhibited the growth, induced histopathological injury and aggravated oxidative stress markedly with contrasting significance of particle size and concentration. The composition of core gut microbiota changed dramatically especially for the MPs-H. Similarly, gut bacterial communities were reshaped by the MPs and NPs but only NPs-H decreased both richness and Shannon indexes significantly. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the potential keystone genera underwent great changes in exposed groups compared to the control. MPs-H increased the network complexity and the frequency of positive interactions which was opposite to other exposed groups. Moreover, the metabolomic profiles associated with amino acid, lipid, unsaturated fatty acid and hormone metabolism were disturbed significantly especially for MPs-H and NPs-H. In conclusion, the toxicity of MPs depends on both the particle size and concentration, and varies with the specific indicators as well.

Abstract
Background The correlation between diabetic nephropathy (DN) and gut microbiota (GM) has been suggested in numerous animal experiments and cross-sectional studies. However, a causal association between GM and DN has not been ascertained. Methods This research adopted MR analysis to evaluate the causal link between GM and DN derived from data acquired through publicly available genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The study utilized the inverse variance weighted (IVW) approach to assess causal association between GM and DN. Four additional methods including MR-Egger, weighted median, weighted mode, and simple mode were employed to ensure comprehensive analysis and robust results. The Cochran's Q test and the MR-Egger method were conducted to identify heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy, respectively. The leave-one-out approach was utilized to evaluate the stability of MR results. Finally, a reverse MR was performed to identify the reverse causal association between GM and DN. Results According to IVW analysis, Class Verrucomicrobiae (p = 0.003), Order Verrucomicrobiales (p = 0.003), Family Verrucomicrobiaceae (p = 0.003), Genus Akkermansia (p = 0.003), Genus Catenibacterium (p = 0.031), Genus Coprococcus 1 (p = 0.022), Genus Eubacterium hallii group (p = 0.018), and Genus Marvinbryantia (p = 0.023) were associated with a higher risk of DN. On the contrary, Class Actinobacteria (p = 0.037), Group Eubacterium ventriosum group (p = 0.030), Group Ruminococcus gauvreauii group (p = 0.048), Order Lactobacillales (p = 0.045), Phylum Proteobacteria (p = 0.017) were associated with a lower risk of DN. The sensitivity analysis did not identify any substantial pleiotropy or heterogeneity in the outcomes. We found causal effects of DN on 11 GM species in the reverse MR analysis. Notably, Phylum Proteobacteria and DN are mutually causalities. Conclusion This study identified the causal association between GM and DN with MR analysis, which may enhance the understanding of the intestinal-renal axis and provide novel potential targets for early non-invasive diagnosis and treatment of DN.

Abstract
Over the last decades, the Mediterranean diet gained enormous scientific, social, and commercial attention due to proven positive effects on health and undeniable taste that facilitated a widespread popularity. Researchers have investigated the role of Mediterranean-type dietary patterns on human health all around the world, reporting consistent findings concerning its benefits. However, what does truly define the Mediterranean diet? The myriad of dietary scores synthesizes the nutritional content of a Mediterranean-type diet, but a variety of aspects are generally unexplored when studying the adherence to this dietary pattern. Among dietary factors, the main characteristics of the Mediterranean diet, such as consumption of fruit and vegetables, olive oil, and cereals should be accompanied by other underrated features, such as the following: (i) specific reference to whole-grain consumption; (ii) considering the consumption of legumes, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices often untested when exploring the adherence to the Mediterranean diet; (iii) consumption of eggs and dairy products as common foods consumed in the Mediterranean region (irrespectively of the modern demonization of dietary fat intake). Another main feature of the Mediterranean diet includes (red) wine consumption, but more general patterns of alcohol intake are generally unmeasured, lacking specificity concerning the drinking occasion and intensity (i.e., alcohol drinking during meals). Among other underrated aspects, cooking methods are rather simple and yet extremely varied. Several underrated aspects are related to the quality of food consumed when the Mediterranean diet was first investigated: foods are locally produced, minimally processed, and preserved with more natural methods (i.e., fermentation), strongly connected with the territory with limited and controlled impact on the environment. Dietary habits are also associated with lifestyle behaviors, such as sleeping patterns, and social and cultural values, favoring commensality and frugality. In conclusion, it is rather reductive to consider the Mediterranean diet as just a pattern of food groups to be consumed decontextualized from the social and geographical background of Mediterranean culture. While the methodologies to study the Mediterranean diet have demonstrated to be useful up to date, a more holistic approach should be considered in future studies by considering the aforementioned underrated features and values to be potentially applied globally through the concept of a "Planeterranean" diet.

Abstract
In Algeria, the data and research on the essential and toxic chemical elements in food are limited and insufficient; therefore, the present study focused on evaluating the essential and toxic elements content in different 11 brands with two types (tomato and oil) of canned tuna fish, consumed in Algeria in 2022, by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES), while mercury (Hg) levels were determined by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry, as well as estimate the probabilistic risk assessment. The elements in canned tuna fish commercialized for human consumption in Algeria were determined by ICP-OES methods, The results showed that the heavy metal concentration in the samples under study ranged from 49.11 to 289.80 mg.kg-1 (Ca), 0.0045 to 0.2598 mg.kg-1 (Cd), 0.128 to 1.21 mg.kg-1 (Cr), 8.55 to 35.94 mg.kg-1 (Fe), 121.27 to 379.17 mg.kg-1 (Mg), 0.0767 to 1.2928 mg.kg-1 (Mn), 2.10 to 3.95 mg.kg-1 (Mo), and 2.86 to 35.90 mg.kg-1 (Zn), whereas Cu, Pb, Cu, Ni, and As were under limit of detection (LOD), while the toxic elements of mercury (Hg) levels were determined by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry which showed a content ranged from 0.0186 to 0.0996 mg.kg-1. The levels of mineral elements concentration were close to the minimum recommended by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Obtained data for this investigation can be suitable for Algerian food purposes.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of stevia residue (STER) on the production performance, egg quality and nutrition, antioxidant ability, immune responses, gut morphology and microbiota of laying hens during the peak laying period. A total of 270 Yikoujingfen NO. 8 laying hens (35 wk of age) were randomly divided into 5 treatments. The control group fed a basal diet and groups supplemented with 2, 4, 6, and 8% STER. The results showed that STER significantly increased egg production, the content of amino acids (alanine, proline, valine, ornithine, asparagine, aspartic acid, and cysteine) in egg whites, and decreased the yolk color (P < 0.05). Additionally, STER significantly increased acetate, HOMOγ linolenic acid and cis-13, 16-docosadienoic acid levels in egg yolk (P < 0.05). IL-2, IL-4, and IL-10 levels in serum significantly increased by STER (P < 0.05), while IL-1β significantly decreased (P < 0.05). STER also increased total antioxidant activity (T-AOC) in the liver and estradiol level in the oviduct (P < 0.05), but decreased the cortisol level in the oviduct (P < 0.05). For the intestinal morphology, the jejunal villus height and crypt-to-villus (V:C) significantly increased by STER (P < 0.05). STER increased the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota (P < 0.05), while deceased Proteobacteria, Desulfobacterota, and Synergistota (P < 0.05). In conclusion, STER improved egg production, quality and nutrition, improved the immune responses, antioxidant capabilities, estrogen level, gut morphology, and increased the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria while decreased the harmful bacteria. Among all treatments, 4 and 6% STER supplementation yielded the most favorable results in terms of enhancing production performance, egg nutrition, gut health, and immune capabilities in laying hens.

Abstract
Fenpropathrin (FEN), a pyrethroid pesticide, is frequently detected in natural water bodies, unavoidable pose adverse effects to aquatic organisms. However, the harmful effects and potential mechanisms of FEN on aquatic species are poorly understood. In this study, common carp were treatment with FEN at 0.45 and 1.35 μg/L for 14 d, and the toxic effects and underlying mechanisms of FEN on the intestine of carp were revealed. RNA-seq results showed that FEN exposure cause a wide range of transcriptional alterations in the intestine and the differentially expressed genes were mainly enrichment in the pathways related to immune and metabolism. Specifically, FEN exposure induced pathological damage and altered submicroscopic structure of the intestine, elevated the levels of Bacteroides fragilis enterotoxin, altered the contents of claudin-1, occludin, and zonula occluden-1 (ZO-1), and causing injury to the intestinal barrier. In addition, inflammation-related index TNF-α in the serum and IL-6 in the intestinal tissues were generally increased after FEN exposure. Moreover, FEN exposure promoted an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS), altered the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione (GSH), upregulated the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the intestines. The apoptosis-related parameter cytochrome c, caspase-9, and caspase-3 were significantly altered, indicating that inflammation reaction, oxidative stress, and apoptosis may be involved in the toxic mechanism of FEN on carp. Moreover, FEN treatment also altered the intestinal flora community significantly, which may affect the intestinal normal physiological function and thus affect the growth of fish. Overall, the present study help to clarify the intestinal reaction mechanisms after FEN treatment, and provide a basis for the risk assessment of FEN.
