Trifluoromethylation of 2D Transition Metal Dichalcogenides: A Mild Functionalization and Tunable p-Type Doping Method

Chemical modification is a powerful strategy for tuning the electronic properties of 2D semiconductors. Here we report the electrophilic trifluoromethylation of 2D WSe2 and MoS2 under mild conditions using the reagent trifluoromethyl thianthrenium triflate (TTT). Chemical characterization and density functional theory calculations reveal that the trifluoromethyl groups bind covalently to surface chalcogen atoms as well as oxygen substitution sites. Trifluoromethylation induces p-type doping in the underlying 2D material, enabling the modulation of charge transport and optical emission properties in WSe2. This work introduces a versatile and efficient method for tailoring the optical and electronic properties of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides.

Bayesian Optimization of Environmentally Sustainable Graphene Inks Produced by Wet Jet Milling

Liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) of graphene is a potentially scalable method to produce conductive graphene inks for printed electronic applications. Among LPE methods, wet jet milling (WJM) is an emerging approach that uses high-speed, turbulent flow to exfoliate graphene nanoplatelets from graphite in a continuous flow manner. Unlike prior WJM work based on toxic, high-boiling-point solvents such as n-methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP), this study uses the environmentally friendly solvent ethanol and the polymer stabilizer ethyl cellulose (EC). Bayesian optimization and iterative batch sampling are employed to guide the exploration of the experimental phase space (namely, concentrations of graphite and EC in ethanol) in order to identify the Pareto frontier that simultaneously optimizes three performance criteria (graphene yield, conversion rate, and film conductivity). This data-driven strategy identifies vastly different optimal WJM conditions compared to literature precedent, including an optimal loading of 15 wt% graphite in ethanol compared to 1 wt% graphite in NMP. These WJM conditions provide superlative graphene production rates of 3.2 g hr-1 with the resulting graphene nanoplatelets being suitable for screen-printed micro-supercapacitors. Finally, life cycle assessment reveals that ethanol-based WJM graphene exfoliation presents distinct environmental sustainability advantages for greenhouse gas emissions, fossil fuel consumption, and toxicity.

Nanotube Structure of AsPS4-xSex (x = 0, 1)

Single-wall nanotubes of isostructural AsPS4-xSex (x = 0, 1) are grown from solid-state reaction of stoichiometric amounts of the elements. The structure of AsPS4 was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and refined in space group P 1 ¯ . The infinite, single-walled AsPS4 nanotubes have an outer diameter of ≈1.1 nm and are built of corner-sharing PS4 tetrahedra and AsS3 trigonal pyramids. Each nanotube is nearly hexagonal, but the ≈3.4 Å distance between S atoms on adjacent nanotubes allows them to easily slide past one another, resulting in the loss of long-range order. Substituting S with Se disrupted the crystallization of the nanotubes, resulting in amorphous products that precluded the determination of the structure for AsPS3Se. 31P solid-state NMR spectroscopy indicated a single unique tetrahedral P environment in AsPS4 and five different P environments all with different degrees of Se substitution in AsPS3Se. Optical absorption spectroscopy revealed an energy band gap of 2.7 to 2.4 eV for AsPS4 and AsPS3Se, respectively. Individual AsPS4 microfibers showed a bulk conductivity of 3.2 × 10-6 S/cm and a negative photoconductivity effect under the illumination of light (3.06 eV) in ambient conditions. Thus, intrinsic conductivity originates from hopping through empty trap states along the length of the AsPS4 nanotubes.

Electrically Controlled All-Antiferromagnetic Tunnel Junctions on Silicon with Large Room-Temperature Magnetoresistance

Antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials are a pathway to spintronic memory and computing devices with unprecedented speed, energy efficiency, and bit density. Realizing this potential requires AFM devices with simultaneous electrical writing and reading of information, which are also compatible with established silicon-based manufacturing. Recent experiments have shown tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) readout in epitaxial AFM tunnel junctions. However, these TMR structures are not grown using a silicon-compatible deposition process, and controlling their AFM order required external magnetic fields. Here it is shown three-terminal AFM tunnel junctions based on the noncollinear antiferromagnet PtMn3 , sputter-deposited on silicon. The devices simultaneously exhibit electrical switching using electric currents, and electrical readout by a large room-temperature TMR effect. First-principles calculations explain the TMR in terms of the momentum-resolved spin-dependent tunneling conduction in tunnel junctions with noncollinear AFM electrodes.

Sub-Diffraction Correlation of Quantum Emitters and Local Strain Fields in Strain-Engineered WSe2 Monolayers

Strain-engineering in atomically thin metal dichalcogenides is a useful method for realizing single-photon emitters (SPEs) for quantum technologies. Correlating SPE position with local strain topography is challenging due to localization inaccuracies from the diffraction limit. Currently, SPEs are assumed to be positioned at the highest strained location and are typically identified by randomly screening narrow-linewidth emitters, of which only a few are spectrally pure. In this work, hyperspectral quantum emitter localization microscopy is used to locate 33 SPEs in nanoparticle-strained WSe2 monolayers with sub-diffraction-limit resolution (≈30 nm) and correlate their positions with the underlying strain field via image registration. In this system, spectrally pure emitters are not concentrated at the highest strain location due to spectral contamination; instead, isolable SPEs are distributed away from points of peak strain with an average displacement of 240 nm. These observations point toward a need for a change in the design rules for strain-engineered SPEs and constitute a key step toward realizing next-generation quantum optical architectures.

Direct Characterization of Buried Interfaces in 2D/3D Heterostructures Enabled by GeO2 Release Layer

Inconsistent interface control in devices based on two-dimensional materials (2DMs) has limited technological maturation. Astounding variability of 2D/three-dimensional (2D/3D) interface properties has been reported, which has been exacerbated by the lack of direct investigations of buried interfaces commonly found in devices. Herein, we demonstrate a new process that enables the assembly and isolation of device-relevant heterostructures for buried interface characterization. This is achieved by implementing a water-soluble substrate (GeO2), which enables deposition of many materials onto the 2DM and subsequent heterostructure release by dissolving the GeO2 substrate. Here, we utilize this novel approach to compare how the chemistry, doping, and strain in monolayer MoS2 heterostructures fabricated by direct deposition vary from those fabricated by transfer techniques to show how interface properties differ with the heterostructure fabrication method. Direct deposition of thick Ni and Ti films is found to react with the monolayer MoS2. These interface reactions convert 50% of MoS2 into intermetallic species, which greatly exceeds the 10% conversion reported previously and 0% observed in transfer-fabricated heterostructures. We also measure notable differences in MoS2 carrier concentration depending on the heterostructure fabrication method. Direct deposition of thick Au, Ni, and Al2O3 films onto MoS2 increases the hole concentration by >1012 cm-2 compared to heterostructures fabricated by transferring MoS2 onto these materials. Thus, we demonstrate a universal method to fabricate 2D/3D heterostructures and expose buried interfaces for direct characterization.

Ultrasmooth Epitaxial Pt Thin Films Grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition

Platinum (Pt) thin films are useful in applications requiring high-conductivity electrodes with excellent thermal and chemical stability. Ultrasmooth and epitaxial Pt thin films with single-crystalline domains have the added benefit of providing ideal templates for the subsequent growth of heteroepitaxial structures. Here, we grow epitaxial Pt (111) electrodes (ca. 30 nm thick) on sapphire (α-Al2O3 (0001)) substrates with pulsed laser deposition. This versatile technique allows control of the growth process and fabrication of films with carefully tailored parameters. X-ray scattering, atomic-force microscopy, and electron microscopy provide structural characterization of the films. Various gaseous atmospheres and temperatures were explored to achieve epitaxial growth of films with low roughness. A two-step (500 °C/300 °C) growth process was developed, yielding films with improved epitaxy without compromising roughness. The resulting films possess ultrasmooth interfaces (<3 Å) and high electrical conductivity (6.9 × 106 S/m). Finally, Pt films were used as current collectors and templates to grow lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4 (111)) epitaxial thin films, a cathode material used in Li-ion batteries. Using a solid-state ionogel electrolyte, the films were highly stable when electrochemically cycled in the 3.5-4.3 V vs Li/Li+ range.

Synthesis of Quantum-Confined Borophene Nanoribbons

Borophene nanoribbons (BNRs) are one-dimensional strips of atomically thin boron expected to exhibit quantum-confined electronic properties that are not present in extended two-dimensional borophene. While the parent material borophene has been experimentally shown to possess anisotropic metallicity and diverse polymorphic structures, the atomically precise synthesis of nanometer-wide BNRs has not yet been achieved. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of multiple BNR polymorphs with well-defined edge configurations within the nanometer-scale terraces of vicinal Ag(977). Through atomic-scale imaging, spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations, the synthesized BNR polymorphs are characterized and found to possess distinct edge structures and electronic properties. For single-phase BNRs, v1/6-BNRs and v1/5-BNRs adopt reconstructed armchair edges and sawtooth edges, respectively. In addition, the electronic properties of single-phase v1/6-BNRs and v1/5-BNRs are dominated by Friedel oscillations and striped moiré patterns, respectively. On the other hand, mixed-phase BNRs possess quantum-confined states with increasing nodes in the electronic density of states at elevated biases. Overall, the high degree of polymorphism and diverse edge topologies in borophene nanoribbons provide a rich quantum platform for studying one-dimensional electronic states.

van der Waals Epitaxy, Superlubricity, and Polarization of the 2D Ferroelectric SnS

Tin monosulfide (SnS) is a two-dimensional layered semiconductor that exhibits in-plane ferroelectric order at very small thicknesses and is of interest in highly scaled devices. Here we report the epitaxial growth of SnS on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) using a pulsed metal-organic chemical vapor deposition process. Lattice matching is observed between the SnS(100) and hBN{11̅0} planes, with no evidence of strain. Atomic force microscopy reveals superlubricity along the commensurate direction of the SnS/hBN interface, and first-principles calculations suggest that friction is controlled by the edges of the SnS islands, rather than interface interactions. Differential phase contrast imaging detects remnant polarization in SnS islands with domains that are not dictated by step-edges in the SnS. The growth of ferroelectric SnS on high quality hBN substrates is a promising step toward electrically switchable ferroelectric semiconducting devices.

Tailoring Electrical Properties in Carbon Nanomaterial Patterns with Multimaterial Aerosol Jet Printing

Multimaterial aerosol jet printing offers a unique capability to freely mix inks with different chemical compositions in the aerosol phase, enabling one-step digital fabrication with tailored compositions or functionally graded structures, including in the x-y plane. Here, in situ mixing of two carbon nanomaterial inks with distinct electrical properties is demonstrated. By tailoring the mixing ratio of the constituent inks, electrical conductivity is modulated by 130×, and sheet resistance values for a single pass span approximately 2 orders of magnitude. The ability to manufacture components with tailored electrical properties offers significant value for hybrid and flexible electronic device applications, such as microelectronics packaging. Moreover, grading properties within a part provides a new dimension of design freedom for complex assemblies.

Moiré synaptic transistor with room-temperature neuromorphic functionality

Moiré quantum materials host exotic electronic phenomena through enhanced internal Coulomb interactions in twisted two-dimensional heterostructures1-4. When combined with the exceptionally high electrostatic control in atomically thin materials5-8, moiré heterostructures have the potential to enable next-generation electronic devices with unprecedented functionality. However, despite extensive exploration, moiré electronic phenomena have thus far been limited to impractically low cryogenic temperatures9-14, thus precluding real-world applications of moiré quantum materials. Here we report the experimental realization and room-temperature operation of a low-power (20 pW) moiré synaptic transistor based on an asymmetric bilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride moiré heterostructure. The asymmetric moiré potential gives rise to robust electronic ratchet states, which enable hysteretic, non-volatile injection of charge carriers that control the conductance of the device. The asymmetric gating in dual-gated moiré heterostructures realizes diverse biorealistic neuromorphic functionalities, such as reconfigurable synaptic responses, spatiotemporal-based tempotrons and Bienenstock-Cooper-Munro input-specific adaptation. In this manner, the moiré synaptic transistor enables efficient compute-in-memory designs and edge hardware accelerators for artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Bimolecularly passivated interface enables efficient and stable inverted perovskite solar cells

Compared with the n-i-p structure, inverted (p-i-n) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) promise increased operating stability, but these photovoltaic cells often exhibit lower power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) because of nonradiative recombination losses, particularly at the perovskite/C60 interface. We passivated surface defects and enabled reflection of minority carriers from the interface into the bulk using two types of functional molecules. We used sulfur-modified methylthio molecules to passivate surface defects and suppress recombination through strong coordination and hydrogen bonding, along with diammonium molecules to repel minority carriers and reduce contact-induced interface recombination achieved through field-effect passivation. This approach led to a fivefold longer carrier lifetime and one-third the photoluminescence quantum yield loss and enabled a certified quasi-steady-state PCE of 25.1% for inverted PSCs with stable operation at 65°C for >2000 hours in ambient air. We also fabricated monolithic all-perovskite tandem solar cells with 28.1% PCE.

A polydiolcitrate-MoS2 composite for 3D printing Radio-opaque, Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffolds

Implantable polymeric biodegradable devices, such as biodegradable vascular stents or scaffolds, cannot be fully visualized using standard X-ray-based techniques, compromising their performance due to malposition after deployment. To address this challenge, we describe composites of methacrylated poly(1,12 dodecamethylene citrate) (mPDC) and MoS2 nanosheets to fabricate novel X-ray visible radiopaque and photocurable liquid polymer-ceramic composite (mPDC-MoS2). The composite was used as an ink with micro continuous liquid interface production (μCLIP) to fabricate bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS). Prints exhibited excellent crimping and expansion mechanics without strut failures and, importantly, required X-ray visibility in air and muscle tissue. Notably, MoS2 nanosheets displayed physical degradation over time in a PBS environment, indicating the potential for producing bioresorbable devices. mPDC-MoS2 is a promising bioresorbable X-ray-visible composite material suitable for 3D printing medical devices, particularly vascular scaffolds or stents, that require non-invasive X-ray-based monitoring techniques for implantation and evaluation. This innovative composite system holds significant promise for the development of biocompatible and highly visible medical implants, potentially enhancing patient outcomes and reducing medical complications.

Electroluminescence from Megasonically Solution-Processed MoS2 Nanosheet Films

Due to their superior optoelectronic properties, monolayer two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted significant attention for electroluminescent devices. However, challenges in isolating optoelectronically active TMD monolayers using scalable liquid phase exfoliation have precluded electroluminescence in large-area, solution-processed TMD films. Here, we overcome these limitations and demonstrate electroluminescence from molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheet films by employing a monolayer-rich MoS2 ink produced by electrochemical intercalation and megasonic exfoliation. Characteristic monolayer MoS2 photoluminescence and electroluminescence spectral peaks at 1.88-1.90 eV are observed in megasonicated MoS2 films, with the emission intensity increasing with film thickness over the range 10-70 nm. Furthermore, employing a vertical light-emitting capacitor architecture enables uniform electroluminescence in large-area devices. These results indicate that megasonically exfoliated MoS2 monolayers retain their direct bandgap character in electrically percolating thin films even following multistep solution processing. Overall, this work establishes megasonicated MoS2 inks as an additive manufacturing platform for flexible, patterned, and miniaturized light sources that can likely be expanded to other TMD semiconductors.

Aerosol-Jet-Printable Covalent Organic Framework Colloidal Inks and Temperature-Sensitive Nanocomposite Films

With molecularly well-defined and tailorable 2D structures, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as leading material candidates for chemical sensing, storage, separation, and catalysis. In these contexts, the ability to directly and deterministically print COFs into arbitrary geometries will enable rapid optimization and deployment. However, previous attempts to print COFs have been restricted by low spatial resolution and/or post-deposition polymerization that limits the range of compatible COFs. Here, these limitations are overcome with a pre-synthesized, solution-processable colloidal ink that enables aerosol jet printing of COFs with micron-scale resolution. The ink formulation utilizes the low-volatility solvent benzonitrile, which is critical to obtaining homogeneous printed COF film morphologies. This ink formulation is also compatible with other colloidal nanomaterials, thus facilitating the integration of COFs into printable nanocomposite films. As a proof-of-concept, boronate-ester COFs are integrated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to form printable COF-CNT nanocomposite films, in which the CNTs enhance charge transport and temperature sensing performance, ultimately resulting in high-sensitivity temperature sensors that show electrical conductivity variation by 4 orders of magnitude between room temperature and 300 °C. Overall, this work establishes a flexible platform for COF additive manufacturing that will accelerate the incorporation of COFs into technologically significant applications.

Fully Printed, High-Temperature Micro-Supercapacitor Arrays Enabled by a Hexagonal Boron Nitride Ionogel Electrolyte

The proliferation and miniaturization of portable electronics require energy-storage devices that are simultaneously compact, flexible, and amenable to scalable manufacturing. In this work, mechanically flexible micro-supercapacitor arrays are demonstrated via sequential high-speed screen printing of conductive graphene electrodes and a high-temperature hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) ionogel electrolyte. By combining the superlative dielectric properties of 2D hBN with the high ionic conductivity of ionic liquids, the resulting hBN ionogel electrolyte enables micro-supercapacitors with exceptional areal capacitances that approach 1 mF cm-2 . Unlike incumbent polymer-based electrolytes, the high-temperature stability of the hBN ionogel electrolyte implies that the printed micro-supercapacitors can be operated at unprecedentedly high temperatures up to 180 °C. These elevated operating temperatures result in increased power densities that make these printed micro-supercapacitors particularly promising for applications in harsh environments such as underground exploration, aviation, and electric vehicles. The combination of enhanced functionality in extreme conditions and high-speed production via scalable additive manufacturing significantly broadens the technological phase space for on-chip energy storage.

Enhanced LiMn2O4 Thin-Film Electrode Stability in Ionic Liquid Electrolyte: A Pathway to Suppress Mn Dissolution

Spinel-type lithium manganese oxide (LiMn₂O₄) cathodes suffer from severe manganese dissolution in the electrolyte, compromising the cyclic stability of LMO-based Li-ion batteries (LIBs). In addition to causing structural and morphological deterioration to the cathode, dissolved Mn ions can migrate through the electrolyte to deposit on the anode, accelerating capacity fade. Here, we examine single-crystal epitaxial LiMn₂O₄ (111) thin-films using synchrotron in situ X-ray diffraction and reflectivity to study the structural and interfacial evolution during cycling. Cyclic voltammetry is performed in a wide range (2.5-4.3 V vs Li/Li⁺) to promote Mn³⁺ formation, which enhances dissolution, for two different electrolyte systems: an imidazolium ionic liquid containing lithium bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) and a conventional carbonate liquid electrolyte containing lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF₆). We find exceptional stability in this voltage range for the ionic liquid electrolyte compared to the conventional electrolyte, which is attributed to the absence of Mn dissolution in the ionic liquid. X-ray reflectivity shows a negligible loss of cathode material for the films cycled in the ionic liquid electrolyte, further confirmed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and transmission electron microscopy. Conversely, a substantial loss of Mn is found when the film is cycled in the conventional electrolyte. These findings show the significant advantages of ionic liquids in suppressing Mn dissolution in LiMn₂O₄ LIB cathodes.

Recent Advances and Future Prospects for Memristive Materials, Devices, and Systems

Memristive technology has been rapidly emerging as a potential alternative to traditional CMOS technology, which is facing fundamental limitations in its development. Since oxide-based resistive switches were demonstrated as memristors in 2008, memristive devices have garnered significant attention due to their biomimetic memory properties, which promise to significantly improve power consumption in computing applications. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent advances in memristive technology, including memristive devices, theory, algorithms, architectures, and systems. In addition, we discuss research directions for various applications of memristive technology including hardware accelerators for artificial intelligence, in-sensor computing, and probabilistic computing. Finally, we provide a forward-looking perspective on the future of memristive technology, outlining the challenges and opportunities for further research and innovation in this field. By providing an up-to-date overview of the state-of-the-art in memristive technology, this review aims to inform and inspire further research in this field.

Atomic-Scale Insights into the Interlayer Characteristics and Oxygen Reactivity of Bilayer Borophene

Bilayer (BL) two-dimensional boron (i.e., borophene) has recently been synthesized and computationally predicted to have promising physical properties for a variety of electronic and energy technologies. However, the fundamental chemical properties of BL borophene that form the foundation of practical applications remain unexplored. Here, we present atomic-level chemical characterization of BL borophene using ultrahigh vacuum tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (UHV-TERS). UHV-TERS identifies the vibrational fingerprint of BL borophene with angstrom-scale spatial resolution. The observed Raman spectra are directly correlated with the vibrations of interlayer boron-boron bonds, validating the three-dimensional lattice geometry of BL borophene. By virtue of the single-bond sensitivity of UHV-TERS to oxygen adatoms, we demonstrate the enhanced chemical stability of BL borophene compared to its monolayer counterpart by exposure to controlled oxidizing atmospheres in UHV. In addition to providing fundamental chemical insight into BL borophene, this work establishes UHV-TERS as a powerful tool to probe interlayer bonding and surface reactivity of low-dimensional materials at the atomic scale.

Centrifuge-Free Separation of Solution-Exfoliated 2D Nanosheets via Cross-Flow Filtration

Solution-processed graphene is a promising material for numerous high-volume applications including structural composites, batteries, sensors, and printed electronics. However, the polydisperse nature of graphene dispersions following liquid-phase exfoliation poses major manufacturing challenges, as incompletely exfoliated graphite flakes must be removed to achieve optimal properties and downstream performance. Incumbent separation schemes rely on centrifugation, which is highly energy-intensive and limits scalable manufacturing. Here, cross-flow filtration (CFF) is introduced as a centrifuge-free processing method that improves the throughput of graphene separation by two orders of magnitude. By tuning membrane pore sizes between microfiltration and ultrafiltration length scales, CFF can also be used for efficient recovery of solvents and stabilizing polymers. In this manner, life cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis reveal that CFF reduces greenhouse gas emissions, fossil energy usage, water consumption, and specific production costs of graphene manufacturing by 57%, 56%, 63%, and 72%, respectively. To confirm that CFF produces electronic-grade graphene, CFF-processed graphene nanosheets are formulated into printable inks, leading to state-of-the-art thin-film conductivities exceeding 10⁴ S m^-1 . This CFF methodology can likely be generalized to other van der Waals layered solids, thus enabling sustainable manufacturing of the diverse set of applications currently being pursued for 2D materials.

Solution Combustion Synthesis and Characterization of Magnesium Copper Vanadates

Magnesium vanadate (MgV₂O₆) and its alloys with copper vanadate were synthesized via the solution combustion technique. Phase purity and solid solution formation were confirmed by a variety of experimental techniques, supported by electronic structure simulations based on density functional theory (DFT). Powder X-ray diffraction combined with Rietveld refinement, laser Raman spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy showed single-phase alloy formation despite the MgV₂O₆ and CuV₂O₆ end members exhibiting monoclinic and triclinic crystal systems, respectively. DFT-calculated optical band gaps showed close agreement in the computed optical bandgaps with experimentally derived values. Surface photovoltage spectroscopy, ambient-pressure photoemission spectroscopy, and Kelvin probe contact potential difference (work function) measurements confirmed a systematic variation in the optical bandgap modification and band alignment as a function of stoichiometry in the alloy composition. These data indicated n-type semiconductor behavior for all the samples which was confirmed by photoelectrochemical measurements.

Enhanced Decomposition of Ammonium Perchlorate-Ethyl Cellulose-Molybdenum Disulfide Nanocomposites

Ammonium perchlorate (AP) is commonly used in propulsion technology. Recent studies have demonstrated that two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials such as graphene (Gr) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) dispersed with nitrocellulose (NC) can conformally coat the surface of AP particles and enhance the reactivity of AP. In this work, the effectiveness of ethyl cellulose (EC) as an alternative to NC was studied. Using a similar encapsulation procedure as in recent work, Gr and hBN dispersed with EC were used to synthesize the composite materials Gr-EC-AP and hBN-EC-AP. Additionally, EC was used because the polymer can be used to disperse other 2D nanomaterials, specifically molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂), which has semiconducting properties. While Gr and hBN dispersed in EC had a minimal effect on the reactivity of AP, MoS₂ dispersed in EC significantly enhanced the decomposition behavior of AP compared to the control and other 2D nanomaterials, as evidenced by a pronounced low-temperature decomposition event (LTD) centered at 300 °C and then complete high-temperature decomposition (HTD) below 400 °C. Moreover, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed a 5% mass loss temperature (T_d5%) of 291 °C for the MoS₂-coated AP, which was 17 °C lower than the AP control. The kinetic parameters for the three encapsulated AP samples were calculated using the Kissinger equation and confirmed a lower activation energy pathway for the MoS₂ (86 kJ/mol) composite compared to pure AP (137 kJ/mol). This unique behavior of MoS₂ is likely due to enhanced oxidation-reduction of AP during the initial stages of the reaction via a transition metal-catalyzed pathway. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the interactions between AP and MoS₂ were stronger than AP on the Gr or hBN surfaces. Overall, this study complements previous work on NC-wrapped AP composites and demonstrates the unique roles of the disperagent and 2D nanomaterial in tuning the thermal decomposition of AP.

Synthesis, Hole Doping, and Electrical Properties of a Semiconducting Azatriangulene-Based Covalent Organic Framework

Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) containing heterotriangulenes have been theoretically identified as semiconductors with tunable, Dirac-cone-like band structures, which are expected to afford high charge-carrier mobilities ideal for next-generation flexible electronics. However, few bulk syntheses of these materials have been reported, and existing synthetic methods provide limited control of network purity and morphology. Here, we report transimination reactions between benzophenone-imine-protected azatriangulenes (OTPA) and benzodithiophene dialdehydes (BDT), which afforded a new semiconducting COF network, OTPA-BDT. The COFs were prepared as both polycrystalline powders and thin films with controlled crystallite orientation. The azatriangulene nodes are readily oxidized to stable radical cations upon exposure to an appropriate p-type dopant, tris(4-bromophenyl)ammoniumyl hexachloroantimonate, after which the network's crystallinity and orientation are maintained. Oriented, hole-doped OTPA-BDT COF films exhibit electrical conductivities of up to 1.2 × 10^-1 S cm^-1, which are among the highest reported for imine-linked 2D COFs to date.

Effects of sunlight on the fate of graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide nanomaterials in the natural surface water

Graphene nanomaterials have been commercialized for use in the electronic and biomedical industries, increasing their dissemination into surface waters and subsequent transformation in natural aquatic environment. While the photodegradation of graphene oxide nanomaterials has been investigated in the past, previous research did not consider actual natural aquatic environment and also focused on primarily graphene oxide nanomaterials. In this study, photodegradation of graphene nanomaterials with varying oxidation levels, including graphene oxide (GO) and partially reduced graphene oxide (rGO-2 h) are evaluated in Columbia River Water and compared with each other. Our results indicate that both direct and indirect photolysis of graphene-based nanomaterials will occur simultaneously in natural surface water. However, environmentally relevant concentrations of photosensitizers in surface water are not capable of producing sufficient ^·OH to initiate degradation of GO via indirect photolysis. For all conditions tested, GO showed more rapid photodegradation compared to rGO. Overall, direct and indirect photodegradation of graphene oxide nanomaterials in natural surface water is minimal and slow indicating that phototransformation of graphene-based nanomaterials will be insignificant in natural surface water.

Chemomechanical modification of quantum emission in monolayer WSe2

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted attention for quantum information science due to their ability to host single-photon emitters (SPEs). Although the properties of atomically thin materials are highly sensitive to surface modification, chemical functionalization remains unexplored in the design and control of 2D material SPEs. Here, we report a chemomechanical approach to modify SPEs in monolayer WSe₂ through the synergistic combination of localized mechanical strain and noncovalent surface functionalization with aryl diazonium chemistry. Following the deposition of an aryl oligomer adlayer, the spectrally complex defect-related emission of strained monolayer WSe₂ is simplified into spectrally isolated SPEs with high single-photon purity. Density functional theory calculations reveal energetic alignment between WSe₂ defect states and adsorbed aryl oligomer energy levels, thus providing insight into the observed chemomechanically modified quantum emission. By revealing conditions under which chemical functionalization tunes SPEs, this work broadens the parameter space for controlling quantum emission in 2D materials.

Quantitative Characterization of the Anisotropic Thermal Properties of Encapsulated Two-Dimensional MoS2 Nanofilms

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors exhibit unique physical properties at the limit of a few atomic layers that are desirable for optoelectronic, spintronic, and electronic applications. Some of these materials require ambient encapsulation to preserve their properties from environmental degradation. While encapsulating 2D semiconductors is essential to device functionality, they also impact heat management due to the reduced thermal conductivity of the 2D material. There are limited experimental reports on in-plane thermal conductivity measurements in encapsulated 2D semiconductors. These measurements are particularly challenging in ultrathin films with a lower thermal conductivity than graphene since it may be difficult to separate the thermal effects of the sample from the encapsulating layers. To address this challenge, we integrated the frequency domain thermoreflectance (FDTR) and optothermal Raman spectroscopy (OTRS) techniques in the same experimental platform. First, we use the FDTR technique to characterize the cross-plane thermal conductivity and thermal boundary conductance. Next, we measure the in-plane thermal conductivity by model-based analysis of the OTRS measurements, using the cross-plane properties obtained from the FDTR measurements as input parameters. We provide experimental data for the first time on the thickness-dependent in-plane thermal conductivity of ultrathin MoS2 nanofilms encapsulated by alumina (Al2O3) and silica (SiO2) thin films. The measured thermal conductivity increased from 26.0 ± 10.0 W m-1 K-1 for monolayer MoS2 to 39.8 ± 10.8 W m-1 K-1 for the six-layer films. We also show that the thickness-dependent cross-plane thermal boundary conductance of the Al2O3/MoS2/SiO2 interface is limited by the low thermal conductance (18.5 MW m-2 K-1) of the MoS2/SiO2 interface, which has important implications on heat management in SiO2-supported and encased MoS2 devices. The measurement methods can be generalized to other 2D materials to study their anisotropic thermal properties.

Conversion of Classical Light Emission from a Nanoparticle-Strained WSe2 Monolayer into Quantum Light Emission via Electron Beam Irradiation

Solid-state single photon emitters (SPEs) within atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have recently attracted interest as scalable quantum light sources for quantum photonic technologies. Among TMDs, WSe₂ monolayers (MLs) are promising for the deterministic fabrication and engineering of SPEs using local strain fields. The ability to reliably produce isolatable SPEs in WSe₂ is currently impeded by the presence of numerous spectrally overlapping states that occur at strained locations. Here nanoparticle (NP) arrays with precisely defined positions and sizes are employed to deterministically create strain fields in WSe₂ MLs, thus enabling the systematic investigation and control of SPE formation. Using this platform, electron beam irradiation at NP-strained locations transforms spectrally overlapped sub-bandgap emission states into isolatable, anti-bunched quantum emitters. The dependence of the emission spectra of WSe₂ MLs as a function of strain magnitude and exposure time to electron beam irradiation is quantified and provides insight into the mechanism for SPE production. Excitons selectively funnel through strongly coupled sub-bandgap states introduced by electron beam irradiation, which suppresses spectrally overlapping emission pathways and leads to measurable anti-bunched behavior. The findings provide a strategy to generate isolatable SPEs in 2D materials with a well-defined energy range.

Systematic Design of a Graphene Ink Formulation for Aerosol Jet Printing

Aerosol jet printing is a noncontact, digital, additive manufacturing technique compatible with a wide variety of functional materials. Although promising, development of new materials and devices using this technique remains hindered by limited rational ink formulation, with most recent studies focused on device demonstration rather than foundational process science. In the present work, a systematic approach to formulating a polymer-stabilized graphene ink is reported, which considers the effect of solvent composition on dispersion, rheology, wetting, drying, and phase separation characteristics that drive process outcomes. It was found that a four-component solvent mixture composed of isobutyl acetate, diglyme, dihydrolevoglucosenone, and glycerol supported efficient ink atomization and controlled in-line drying to reduce overspray and wetting instabilities while maintaining high resolution and electrical conductivity, thus overcoming a trade-off in deposition rate and resolution common to aerosol jet printing. Biochemical sensors were printed for amperometric detection of the pesticide parathion, exhibiting a detection limit of 732 nM and a sensitivity of 34 nA μM^-1, demonstrating the viability of this graphene ink for fabricating functional electronic devices.

Environmentally sustainable implementations of two-dimensional nanomaterials

Rapid advancement in nanotechnology has led to the development of a myriad of useful nanomaterials that have novel characteristics resulting from their small size and engineered properties. In particular, two-dimensional (2D) materials have become a major focus in material science and chemistry research worldwide with substantial efforts centered on their synthesis, property characterization, and technological, and environmental applications. Environmental applications of these nanomaterials include but are not limited to adsorbents for wastewater and drinking water treatment, membranes for desalination, and coating materials for filtration. However, it is also important to address the environmental interactions and implications of these nanomaterials in order to develop strategies that minimize their environmental and public health risks. Towards this end, this review covers the most recent literature on the environmental implementations of emerging 2D nanomaterials, thereby providing insights into the future of this fast-evolving field including strategies for ensuring sustainable development of 2D nanomaterials.

Progress and Challenges for Memtransistors in Neuromorphic Circuits and Systems

Due to the increasing importance of artificial intelligence (AI), significant recent effort has been devoted to the development of neuromorphic circuits that seek to emulate the energy-efficient information processing of the brain. While non-volatile memory (NVM) based on resistive switches, phase-change memory, and magnetic tunnel junctions has shown potential for implementing neural networks, additional multi-terminal device concepts are required for more sophisticated bio-realistic functions. Of particular interest are memtransistors based on low-dimensional nanomaterials, which are capable of electrostatically tuning memory and learning behavior at the device level. Herein, a conceptual overview of the memtransistor is provided in the context of neuromorphic circuits. Recent progress is surveyed for memtransistors and related multi-terminal NVM devices including dual-gated floating-gate memories, dual-gated ferroelectric transistors, and dual-gated van der Waals heterojunctions. The different materials systems and device architectures are classified based on the degree of control and relative tunability of synaptic behavior, with an emphasis on device concepts that harness the reduced dimensionality, weak electrostatic screening, and phase-changes properties of nanomaterials. Finally, strategies for achieving wafer-scale integration of memtransistors and multi-terminal NVM devices are delineated, with specific attention given to the materials challenges for practical neuromorphic circuits.

Sterilizable and Reusable UV-Resistant Graphene-Polyurethane Elastomer Composites

Shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic caused medical workers to reuse medical supplies such as N95 masks. While ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) is commonly used for sterilization, UVGI can also damage the elastomeric components of N95 masks, preventing effective fit and thus weakening filtration efficacy. Although PPE shortage is no longer an acute issue, the development of sterilizable and reusable UV-resistant elastomers remains of high interest from a long-term sustainability and health perspective. Here, graphene nanosheets, produced by scalable and sustainable exfoliation of graphite in ethanol using the polymer ethyl cellulose (EC), are utilized as UV-resistant additives in polyurethane (PU) elastomer composites. By increasing the graphene/EC loading up to 1 wt %, substantial UV protection is imparted by the graphene nanosheets, which strongly absorb UV light and hence suppress photoinduced degradation of the PU matrix. Additionally, graphene/EC provides mechanical reinforcement, such as increasing Young's modulus, elongation at break, and toughness, with negligible changes following UV exposure. These graphene/EC-PU composites remain mechanically robust over at least 150 sterilization cycles, enabling safe reuse following UVGI. Beyond N95 masks, these UVGI-compatible graphene/EC-PU composites have potential utility in other PPE applications to address the broader issue of single-use waste.

Carbon nanotube transistors: Making electronics from molecules

Semiconducting carbon nanotubes are robust molecules with nanometer-scale diameters that can be used in field-effect transistors, from larger thin-film implementation to devices that work in conjunction with silicon electronics, and can potentially be used as a platform for high-performance digital electronics as well as radio-frequency and sensing applications. Recent progress in the materials, devices, and technologies related to carbon nanotube transistors is briefly reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the most broadly impactful advancements that have evolved from single-nanotube devices to implementations with aligned nanotubes and even nanotube thin films. There are obstacles that remain to be addressed, including material synthesis and processing control, device structure design and transport considerations, and further integration demonstrations with improved reproducibility and reliability; however, the integration of more than 10,000 devices in single functional chips has already been realized.

Room Temperature Lasing from Semiconducting Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Miniaturized near-infrared semiconductor lasers that are able to generate coherent light with low energy consumption have widespread applications in fields such as optical interconnects, neuromorphic computing, and deep-tissue optogenetics. With optical transitions at near-infrared wavelengths, diameter-tunable electronic structures, and superlative optoelectronic properties, semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are promising candidates for nanolaser applications. However, despite significant efforts in this direction and recent progress toward enhancing spontaneous emission from SWCNTs through Purcell effects, SWCNT-based excitonic lasers have not yet been demonstrated. Leveraging an optimized cavity-emitter integration scheme enabled by a self-assembly process, here we couple SWCNT emission to the whispering gallery modes supported by polymer microspheres, resulting in room temperature excitonic lasing with an average lasing threshold of 4.5 kW/cm². The high photostability of SWCNTs allows stable lasing for prolonged duration with minimal degradation. This experimental realization of excitonic lasing from SWCNTs, combined with their versatile electronic and optical properties that can be further controlled by chemical modification, offers far-reaching opportunities for tunable near-infrared nanolasers that are applicable for optical signal processing, in vivo biosensing, and optoelectronic devices.

Developing a Chemical and Structural Understanding of the Surface Oxide in a Niobium Superconducting Qubit

Superconducting thin films of niobium have been extensively employed in transmon qubit architectures. Although these architectures have demonstrated improvements in recent years, further improvements in performance through materials engineering will aid in large-scale deployment. Here, we use information retrieved from secondary ion mass spectrometry and electron microscopy to conduct a detailed assessment of the surface oxide that forms in ambient conditions for transmon test qubit devices patterned from a niobium film. We observe that this oxide exhibits a varying stoichiometry with NbO and NbO₂ found closer to the niobium film/oxide interface and Nb₂O₅ found closer to the surface. In terms of structural analysis, we find that the Nb₂O₅ region is semicrystalline in nature and exhibits randomly oriented grains on the order of 1-3 nm corresponding to monoclinic N-Nb₂O₅ that are dispersed throughout an amorphous matrix. Using fluctuation electron microscopy, we are able to map the relative crystallinity in the Nb₂O₅ region with nanometer spatial resolution. Through this correlative method, we observe that the highly disordered regions are more likely to contain oxygen vacancies and exhibit weaker bonds between the niobium and oxygen atoms. Based on these findings, we expect that oxygen vacancies likely serve as a decoherence mechanism in quantum systems.

All-Printed Ultrahigh-Responsivity MoS2 Nanosheet Photodetectors Enabled by Megasonic Exfoliation

Printed 2D materials, derived from solution-processed inks, offer scalable and cost-effective routes to mechanically flexible optoelectronics. With micrometer-scale control and broad processing latitude, aerosol-jet printing (AJP) is of particular interest for all-printed circuits and systems. Here, AJP is utilized to achieve ultrahigh-responsivity photodetectors consisting of well-aligned, percolating networks of semiconducting MoS₂ nanosheets and graphene electrodes on flexible polyimide substrates. Ultrathin (≈1.2 nm thick) and high-aspect-ratio (≈1 μm lateral size) MoS₂ nanosheets are obtained by electrochemical intercalation followed by megasonic atomization during AJP, which not only aerosolizes the inks but also further exfoliates the nanosheets. The incorporation of the high-boiling-point solvent terpineol into the MoS₂ ink is critical for achieving a highly aligned and flat thin-film morphology following AJP as confirmed by grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering and atomic force microscopy. Following AJP, curing is achieved with photonic annealing, which yields quasi-ohmic contacts and photoactive channels with responsivities exceeding 10³  A W^-1 that outperform previously reported all-printed visible-light photodetectors by over three orders of magnitude. Megasonic exfoliation coupled with properly designed AJP ink formulations enables the superlative optoelectronic properties of ultrathin MoS₂ nanosheets to be preserved and exploited for the scalable additive manufacturing of mechanically flexible optoelectronics.

Liquid-Phase Exfoliation of Magnetically and Optoelectronically Active Ruthenium Trichloride Nanosheets

α-RuCl₃ is a layered transition metal halide that possesses a range of exotic magnetic, optical, and electronic properties including fractional excitations indicative of a proximate Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). While previous reports have explored these properties on idealized single crystals or mechanically exfoliated samples, the scalable production of α-RuCl₃ nanosheets has not yet been demonstrated. Here, we perform liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) of α-RuCl₃ through an electrochemically assisted approach, which yields ultrathin, electron-doped α-RuCl₃ nanosheets that are then assembled into electrically conductive large-area thin films. The crystalline integrity of the α-RuCl₃ nanosheets following LPE is confirmed through a wide range of structural and chemical analyses. Moreover, the physical properties of the LPE α-RuCl₃ nanosheets are investigated through electrical, optical, and magnetic characterization methods, which reveal a structural phase transition at 230 K that is consistent with the onset of Kitaev paramagnetism in addition to an antiferromagnetic transition at 2.6 K. Intercalated ions from the electrochemical LPE protocol favorably alter the optical response of the α-RuCl₃ nanosheets, enabling large-area Mott insulator photodetectors that operate at telecommunications-relevant infrared wavelengths near 1.55 μm. These photodetectors show a linear photocurrent response as a function of incident power, which suggests negligible trap-mediated recombination or photothermal effects, ultimately resulting in a photoresponsivity of ≈2 mA/W.

Screen-Printable Hexagonal Boron Nitride Ionogel Electrolytes for Mechanically Deformable Solid-State Lithium-Ion Batteries

Ionogel electrolytes present several benefits for solid-state lithium-ion batteries including nonflammability, favorable electrochemical properties, and high thermal stability. However, limited processing methods are currently available for ionogel electrolytes, restricting their practical applications. Here, we present a screen-printable ionogel electrolyte formulation based on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanoplatelets. To achieve screen-printable rheological properties, hBN nanoplatelets are mixed with an imidazolium ionic liquid in ethyl lactate. Following screen printing, the resulting spatially uniform and mechanically flexible hBN ionogel electrolytes achieve high room-temperature ionic conductivities >1 mS cm^-1 and stiff mechanical moduli >1 MPa. These hBN ionogel electrolytes enable the fabrication of fully screen-printed lithium-ion batteries with high cycling stability, rate performance, and mechanical resilience against flexion and external forces, thus providing a robust energy storage solution that is compatible with scalable additive manufacturing.

Aerosol-jet-printed graphene electrochemical immunosensors for rapid and label-free detection of SARS-CoV-2 in saliva

Rapid, inexpensive, and easy-to-use coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) home tests are key tools in addition to vaccines in the world-wide fight to eliminate national and local shutdowns. However, currently available tests for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, are too expensive, painful, and irritating, or not sufficiently sensitive for routine, accurate home testing. Herein, we employ custom-formulated graphene inks and aerosol jet printing (AJP) to create a rapid electrochemical immunosensor for direct detection of SARS-CoV-2 Spike Receptor-Binding Domain (RBD) in saliva samples acquired non-invasively. This sensor demonstrated limits of detection that are considerably lower than most commercial SARS-CoV-2 antigen tests (22.91 ± 4.72 pg/mL for Spike RBD and 110.38 ± 9.00 pg/mL for Spike S1) as well as fast response time (~30 mins), which was facilitated by the functionalization of printed graphene electrodes in a single-step with SARS-CoV-2 polyclonal antibody through the carbodiimide reaction without the need for nanoparticle functionalization or secondary antibody or metallic nanoparticle labels. This immunosensor presents a wide linear sensing range from 1 to 1000 ng/mL and does not react with other coexisting influenza viruses such as H1N1 hemagglutinin. By combining high-yield graphene ink synthesis, automated printing, high antigen selectivity, and rapid testing capability, this work offers a promising alternative to current SARS-CoV-2 antigen tests.

Morphotaxy of Layered van der Waals Materials

Layered van der Waals (vdW) materials have attracted significant attention due to their materials properties that can enhance diverse applications including next-generation computing, biomedical devices, and energy conversion and storage technologies. This class of materials is typically studied in the two-dimensional (2D) limit by growing them directly on bulk substrates or exfoliating them from parent layered crystals to obtain single or few layers that preserve the original bonding. However, these vdW materials can also function as a platform for obtaining additional phases of matter at the nanoscale. Here, we introduce and review a synthesis paradigm, morphotaxy, where low-dimensional materials are realized by using the shape of an initial nanoscale precursor to template growth or chemical conversion. Using morphotaxy, diverse non-vdW materials such as HfO₂ or InF₃ can be synthesized in ultrathin form by changing the composition but preserving the shape of the original 2D layered material. Morphotaxy can also enable diverse atomically precise heterojunctions and other exotic structures such as Janus materials. Using this morphotaxial approach, the family of low-dimensional materials can be substantially expanded, thus creating vast possibilities for future fundamental studies and applied technologies.

Ingrained: An Automated Framework for Fusing Atomic-Scale Image Simulations into Experiments

To fully leverage the power of image simulation to corroborate and explain patterns and structures in atomic resolution microscopy, an initial correspondence between the simulation and experimental image must be established at the outset of further high accuracy simulations or calculations. Furthermore, if simulation is to be used in context of highly automated processes or high-throughput optimization, the process of finding this correspondence itself must be automated. In this work, "ingrained," an open-source automation framework which solves for this correspondence and fuses atomic resolution image simulations into the experimental images to which they correspond, is introduced. Herein, the overall "ingrained" workflow, focusing on its application to interface structure approximations, and the development of an experimentally rationalized forward model for scanning tunneling microscopy simulation are described.

Back electron transfer rates determine the photoreactivity of donor-acceptor stilbene complexes in a macrocyclic host

Host-guest 2 : 1 complexation of photoreactive alkene guests improves the selectivity of [2 + 2] photodimerizations by templating alkene orientation prior to irradiation. Host-guest chemistry can also provide 1 : 1 : 1 complexes through the inclusion of electronically complementary donor and acceptor guests, but the photoreactivity of such complexes has not been investigated. We imagined that such complexes could enable selective cross-[2 + 2] photocycloadditions between donor and acceptor stilbenes. In pursuit of this strategy, we investigated a series of stilbenes and found 1 : 1 : 1 complexes with cucurbit[8]uril that exhibited charge-transfer (CT) absorption bands in the visible and near-IR regions. Irradiation of the CT band of an azastilbene, 4,4'-stilbenedicarboxylate, and cucurbit[8]uril ternary complex led to a selective cross-[2 + 2] photocycloaddition, while other substrate pairs exhibited no productive chemistry upon CT excitation. Using transient absorption spectroscopy, we were able to understand the variable photoreactivity of different stilbene donor-acceptor complexes. We found that back electron transfer following CT excitation of the photoreactive complex is positioned deep in the Marcus inverted region due to electrostatic stabilization of the ground state, allowing [2 + 2] to effectively compete with this relaxation pathway. Control reactions revealed that the cucurbit[8]uril host not only serves to template the reaction from the ground state, but also protects the long-lived radical ions formed by CT from side reactions. This protective role of the host suggests that donor-acceptor host-guest ternary complexes could be used to improve existing CT-initiated photochemistry or access new reactivity.

Probing borophene oxidation at the atomic scale

Two-dimensional boron (i.e. borophene) holds promise for a variety of emerging nanoelectronic and quantum technologies. Since borophene is synthesized under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions, it is critical that the chemical stability and structural integrity of borophene in oxidizing environments are understood for practical borophene-based applications. In this work, we assess the mechanism of borophene oxidation upon controlled exposure to air and molecular oxygen in UHV via scanning tunneling microscopy andspectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. While borophene catastrophically degrades almost instantaneously upon exposure to air, borophene undergoes considerably more controlled oxidation when exposed to molecular oxygen in UHV. In particular, UHV molecular oxygen dosing results in single-atom covalent modification of the borophene basal plane in addition to disordered borophene edge oxidation that shows altered electronic characteristics. By comparing these experimental observations with density functional theory calculations, further atomistic insight is gained including pathways for molecular oxygen dissociation, surface diffusion, and chemisorption to borophene. Overall, this study provides an atomic-scale perspective of borophene oxidation that will inform ongoing efforts to passivate and utilize borophene in ambient conditions.

Linear and Symmetric Li-Based Composite Memristors for Efficient Supervised Learning

Emerging energy-efficient neuromorphic circuits are based on hardware implementation of artificial neural networks (ANNs) that employ the biomimetic functions of memristors. Specifically, crossbar array memristive architectures are able to perform ANN vector-matrix multiplication more efficiently than conventional CMOS hardware. Memristors with specific characteristics, such as ohmic behavior in all resistance states in addition to symmetric and linear long-term potentiation/depression (LTP/LTD), are required in order to fully realize these benefits. Here, we demonstrate a Li-based composite memristor (LCM) that achieves these objectives. The LCM consists of three phases: Li-doped TiO₂ as a Li reservoir, Li₄Ti₅O₁₂ as the insulating phase, and Li₇Ti₅O₁₂ as the metallic phase, where resistive switching correlates with the change in the relative fraction of the metallic and insulating phases. The LCM exhibits a symmetric and gradual resistive switching behavior for both set and reset operations during a full bias sweep cycle. This symmetric and linear weight update is uniquely enabled by the symmetric bidirectional migration of Li ions, which leads to gradual changes in the relative fraction of the metallic phase in the film. The optimized LCM in ANN simulation showed that exceptionally high accuracy in image classification is realized in fewer training steps compared to the nonlinear behavior of conventional memristors.
