Abstract
BACKGROUND Lymphatic filariasis (LF) affects more than 120 million people globally. In Tanzania, nearly six million people are estimated to live with clinical manifestations of the disease. The National LF control program was established in 2000 using Mass drug administration (MDA) of Ivermectin and Albendazole to individuals aged 5years and above. This study assessed the infection status in individuals aged 15 years and above who are eligible for participation in MDA. The level of compliance to MDA and the reasons for non-compliance to MDA were also assessed. METHODS A community based cross-sectional study was conducted in two villages of Masasi District. A total of 590 participants aged 15 years and above were screened for the circulating filarial antigen (CFA) using the rapid diagnostic test. Night blood samples from CFA positive individuals were further analyzed for detection and quantification of Wuchereria bancrofti microfilaria (Mf) using the counting chamber technique. A pre-tested questionnaire was administered to collect information on compliance to MDA and the factors affecting continued transmission. Data were analyzed using SPSS Version 20. Chi-square test was used to compare the prevalence of CFA by gender and village where a P-value ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS Out of 590 participants, 30 (5.1%) were positive for CFA and one (0.2%) was found positive for microfilaria of Wuchereria bancrofti. Compliance during the last round of MDA, in the year 2019 was 56% which is below the minimum coverage recommended by WHO. Absence from home during MDA and perceptions of being free from hydrocele or elephantiasis were the major reasons for non-compliance. CONCLUSION There is a significant decline in LF transmission in Masasi District after seven rounds of MDA. However, the presence of individuals who are persistently non-compliant may delay elimination of LF in the District.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the immunoprotective effect of Schistosoma japonicum recombinant 22.6 kDa (rSj22.6) and Sj22.6/Sj26 GST fusion protein. METHODS The Sj22.6/Sj26 GST fusion protein was prepared by affinity chromatography using glutathione Sepharose 4B. The purified rSj22.6 could be cleaved easily from the fusion protein with Thrombin. 17 and 12 mice immunized with rSj22.6 and Sj22.6/Sj26 GST separately were each challenged with 40 +/- 1 S. japonicum cercariae. RESULTS In BALB/c mice, the rSj22.6 and Sj22.6/Sj26 GST could induce 32.1 (P < 0.005) and 34.9% (P < 0.02) worm reduction, respectively, as well as 28.4% (P < 0.02) and 45.1% (P < 0.005) total egg reduction, respectively. CONCLUSION Bpth rSj22.6 and Sj22.6/Sj26 GST fusion protein are partially effective against S. japonicum.

Abstract
The development of multivalent vaccines consisting of several antigens is a novel approach to creating broad-range protection against different parasite strains and parasite life cycle stages. We have previously confirmed that the schistosome Sm21.7 and SmFimbrin (SmFim) proteins could induce protection in mice. Therefore, this study aimed to construct the multivalent DNA vaccine Sm21.7-SmFim/pBudCE4.1 and evaluate its immune efficacy. The open reading frames of two Schistosoma mansoni genes, Sm21.7 and SmFim, were inserted into the eukaryotic expression plasmid pBudCE4.1 designed for the independent expression of two genes in mammalian cells. To evaluate the in vitro expression of the multivalent Sm21.7-SmFim/pBudCE4.1 DNA vaccine and its immunological effect in mice, the recombinant plasmid Sm21.7-SmFim/pBudCE4.1 was used to transfect 293T cells, and the expression of mRNA and proteins was examined using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis. Then the ability of Sm21.7-SmFim/pBudCE4.1 to protect against S. mansoni challenge infections was analyzed according to worm burden and egg reduction rates after vaccination of mice. Vaccinated mice showed a significant level of protection (56%), and a decrease in the number and size, and change in the cellular profile, of granulomas. Egg reduction in liver and intestine was 41.53% and 55.63%, respectively, as determined relative to mice that received the empty vector only. In addition to reductions in worm viability, worm fecundity and egg hatching ability were observed following challenge infection in the immunized group. Results showed that Sm21.7-SmFim/pBudCE4.1 could express Sm21.7 and SmFim mRNA and proteins. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blot analysis indicated that immunized mice generated specific immunoglobulin G against Sm21.7-SmFim/pBudCE4.1. These results suggest that vaccination with multivalent S. mansoni DNA vaccine (SmFim-Sm21.7/pBudCE4.1) not only induces a significant reduction in worm and egg burdens, but also significantly reduces the size of egg granulomas. In summary, the multivalent vaccine stimulated specific immunity with a significant level of protection and has anti-pathological effect.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the protective immunity of excretory-secretory products of Fasciola hepatica (FhES) worm against S.mansoni infection in mice. Evaluation of FhES antigen was through measuring worm burden, ova count, granuloma size and frequency as well as the histopathological picture of the liver. The study was extended to determine the level of free radical scavengers; lipid peroxide, glutathione (GSH), vitamin C, vitamin E, catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Liver function enzymes such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were also taken into consideration. Four groups of eight mice each were selected for this study. Group 1 served as control group. Group 2: normal healthy mice vaccinated with FhES product. Group 3: S.mansoni infected mice for 2 months and group 4: infected mice pre-vaccinated with FhES antigen. Vaccination schedule comprised of a single subcutaneous injection of FhES antigen emulsified with Freund's complete adjuvant in a dose 0.5 mg protein/mouse, followed by intraperitoneal injections of the same antigen without adjuvant in 3 doses/week for 3 successive weeks. The total antigen inoculation was 5 mg protein/mouse. The present results revealed a drastic change in all the measured parameters after S.mansoni infection and a noticeable improved level after vaccination with FhES antigen. It can be concluded that FhES antigen succeeded to protect mice against schistosomiasis by a significant reduction in worm burden, ova count, granuloma size and number, improvement in the histopathological architecture of the liver as well as amelioration in the antioxidant levels under investigation.

Abstract
In developing countries where helminth infections are highly prevalent, Th1 autoimmune diseases are almost never reported. A hypothesis suggesting that this may be due to effects of helminth infection on the immune system has been developed, and has inspired scientists to explore the possibility of using helminth antigens to treat autoimmune diseases. In animal models, helminth infection and helminth products have been successfully used to prevent different Th1-mediated autoimmune diseases. Results from initial studies were interpreted based upon the Th1/Th2 paradigm: A Th2-polarizing helminth infection correcting a Th1 autoimmune 'imbalance'. Intriguingly, however, allergies rarely develop in the host, despite the strong Th2 polarization induced by parasite antigens. Helminth infections act on the immune system of the host at many different levels. For this reason, identifying one or more products with therapeutic potential, from the 20,000 genes that a helminth can express, is a challenging task. In this review, we summarize the results achieved in animal models, and suggest possible approaches for the design of therapies appropriate for use in human Th1-mediated autoimmune pathologies.

Abstract
Substantial progress has been made in the last decade in identifying several antigens from Haemonchus contortus which, in their native form, stimulate useful levels of protective immunity (70-95% reductions in faecal egg output) in the ovine host. Much work has focussed on proteins/protein complexes expressed on the surface of the worm gut which are exposed to the blood meal, and, hence, antibody ingested with it. The antigens generally, but not in all cases, show protease activity and antibody is thought to mediate protective immunity by blocking the activity of enzymes involved in digestion within the worm. This review summarises the protective efficacy, as well as the biochemical and molecular properties, of the principal candidate antigens which are expressed in the gut of these parasites. Of course, such antigens will have to be expressed as recombinant proteins to be sufficiently cost-effective for use in a commercial vaccine and the current status of recombinant antigen expression is discussed with particular reference to conformation and glycosylation. There is a need for continued antigen definition even in the confines of gut antigens and potential targets can be selected from the rapidly expanding genome/EST datasets on the basis of predicted functional homology. Gene knockout technologies such as RNA interference have the potential to provide high throughput, rapid and inexpensive methods to define whether the protein product of a particular gene would be a suitable vaccine candidate.

Abstract
Lambs respond to vaccination against bacteria and viruses but have a poor immunological response to nematodes. Here we report that they are protected against the parasitic nematode Haemonchus contortus after vaccination with excretory/secretory (ES) glycoproteins using Alhydrogel as an adjuvant. Lambs immunized with ES in Alhydrogel and challenged with 300 L3 larvae/kg body weight had a reduction in cumulative egg output of 89% and an increased percentage protection of 54% compared with the adjuvant control group. Compared to the adjuvant dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium bromide, Alhydrogel induced earlier onset and significantly higher ES- specific IgG, IgA, and IgE antibody responses. In all vaccinated groups a substantial proportion of the antibody response was directed against glycan epitopes, irrespective of the adjuvant used. In lambs vaccinated with ES in Alhydrogel but not in any other group a significant increase was found in antibody levels against the GalNAcbeta1,4 (Fucalpha1,3)GlcNAc (fucosylated LacdiNAc, LDNF) antigen, a carbohydrate antigen that is also involved in the host defense against the human parasite Schistosoma mansoni. In lambs the LDNF-specific response increased from the first immunization onward and was significantly higher in protected lambs. In addition, an isotype switch from LDNF-specific IgM to IgG was induced that correlated with protection. These data demonstrate that hyporesponsiveness of lambs to H. contortus can be overcome by vaccination with ES glycoproteins in a strong T-helper 2 type response-inducing aluminum adjuvant. This combination generated high and specific antiglycan antibody responses that may contribute to the vaccination-induced protection.

Abstract
AIM To study the protection against cercariae challenge in mice immunized with native tropomyosin (TM) antigens from Schistosoma japonicum (Chinese strain) and Oncomelania hupensis. METHODS The native TM antigens were extracted from adult worms of S. japonicum (SjcTM) and head-pad of O. hupensis (OhTM), the purity and the molecular weight of these antigens were analysed by SDS-PAGE. Each C57BL/6 female mouse was immunized subcutaneously by injection of 5 micrograms SjcTM or 30 micrograms OhTM emulsified in an equal volume of Freuds adjuvant for three times. Control mice were injected only with adjuvant. All the mice were artificially challenged with cercariae of S. japonicum at five days after final injection. Six weeks after challenge, the mice were perfused, the worms and the eggs collected from the livers and the intestines of mice were counted. RESULTS The prepared SjcTM and OhTM antigens were shown to be pure, the molecular weight being around 40 kDa. Compared with the control group, the worm reduction rates of SjcTM group and OhTM group were 21.1% and 28.2%, respectively; the egg reduction rates per worm pair in the tissues were 20.1% and 52.2% (liver), 32.8% and 28.1% (intestine), respectively; the matured egg reduction rates in the tissues were 25.9% and 46.8% (liver), 39.7% and 66.8%, respectively. CONCLUSION SjcTM and OhTM antigens can be served as new candidates of vaccine against schistosomiasis japonica.

Abstract
Cystic fluid, which has antigenic properties of whole Taenia solium cysticerci, was used to discriminate neurocysticercosis cases and other parasitic infections, especially helminthiases. Twenty-one neurocysticercosis and several kinds of 22 different parasitic infections, including HIV cases (n=234) evaluated a 90.48% sensitivity and 86.32% specificity of indirect ELISA as follows: a low antigen concentration of 5 microg/ml. serum dilution of 1:400, conjugate dilution of 1:2,000 and a cut-off value of 0.349. Eight different helminthic infections (n = 25); echinococcosis (8/10), gnathostomiasis (6/8), strongyloidiasis (5/14), hookworm infection (1/18), angiostrongyliasis (2/25), opisthorchiasis (1/18), onchocercosis (1/3) and toxocariasis (1/6) were cross-reactive with this antigen. No serum antibody from other brain infections in the study gave a reaction with the antigen. In this study, the cystic fluid antigen gave high sensitivity of the test. However, the antigen contains various antigenic molecules able to bind with antibodies from several of the above helminthic sera, especially echinococcosis and gnathostomiasis. In Thailand, gnathostomiasis is one of the more famous tropical diseases but echinococcosis is quite rare. Cystic fluid antigen should be further investigated for its specific finding in diagnosis.

Abstract
Taenia crassiceps recombinant antigens KETc1 and KETc12 have been shown to induce high level of protection against experimental murine T. crassiceps cysticercosis, an experimental model successfully used to test candidate antigens for use in vaccination against porcine Taenia solium cysticercosis. Based on the deduced amino acid sequence, KETc1 and KETc12 were chemically synthesized in linear form. Immunization with KETc1 induced 66.7 to 100% protection against murine cysticercosis, and immunization with KETc12 induced 52.7 to 88.1% protection. The elicited immune response indicated that both peptides contain at least one B-cell epitope (as demonstrated by their ability to induce specific antibodies) and one T-cell epitope that strongly stimulated the proliferation of T cells primed with either the free peptide or total cysticercal T. crassiceps antigens. The high percentage of spleen cells expressing inflammatory cytokines points to the likelihood of a T1 response being involved in protection. The protective capacity of the peptides and their presence in all developmental stages of T. solium point to these two epitopes as strong candidates for inclusion in a polyepitopic synthetic vaccine against T. solium pig cysticercosis.

Abstract
Schistosomiasis, the second major parasitic disease in the world after malaria, affects 200 million people. Vaccine strategies represent an essential component of the control of this chronic debilitating disease where the deposition of millions of eggs in the tissues is the main cause of pathology. Research developed in our laboratory over the last 20 years has led to the identification of novel effector mechanisms, pointing for the first time to the protective role of Th2 responses and of IgE antibodies now supported by seven studies in human populations. The identification and molecular cloning of a target antigen, a glutathione S-transferase (GST), has made it possible to demonstrate its vaccine potential in several animal species (rodents, cattle, primates) and to establish consistently the capacity of vaccination to reduce female worm fecundity and egg viability through the production of neutralizing antibodies (IgA and IgG). Following promising preclinical studies, clinical trials (phase I and II) have been undertaken using Schistosoma haematobium GST, Sh28GST. High titers of neutralizing antibodies were produced (IgG3 and IgA) together with Th2 cytokines, consistently with the concepts developed from experimental models. With these results we are on the way towards a feasible approach of vaccine development against a major human parasitic disease.

Abstract
The anti-miracidial potential of recombinant Schistosoma mansoni glutathione S-transferase 26 (rSmGST26) or native crude soluble egg antigens (SEA) was assessed. The associated dynamics of granuloma formation and immune responses were evaluated. Naive C57BL/6 mice were injected intravenously with multiple doses of either SEA (SEA-group) or rSmGST26 (GST-group) 7 days before cercarial infection. The immunized groups and the respective controls were sacrificed 6, 8 and 16 weeks postinfection (p.i.). Acceleration of ova destruction and reduction of granuloma diameter were greater in the GST-group than the SEA-group, mainly at 8 weeks p.i. However, the amelioration of hepatic pathology and function was more evident in the SEA-group. Concurrently, serum-specific IgG1 levels were elevated throughout the course of infection in the immunized groups compared to the infected controls. Initial rise of all splenic cytokines and serum anti-SEA IgE levels at 6 weeks p.i. was observed, followed by a dramatic drop in the levels of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-2, IFNgamma, IL-4 and TNF-alpha and IgE at 8 weeks of infection. IL-10 level was lower at 8 weeks p.i. than at 6 weeks, but was higher in immunized groups than in infected controls. Several responses may be implicated as an outcome of the present immunization protocol, such as increased levels of blocking antibody (IgG1) and IL-10 with decreased levels of proinflammatory cytokines and IgE.

Abstract
An IgG2a anti-Schistosoma mansoni mouse monoclonal antibody was shown to passively protect Swiss mice. The 74 kDa target antigen was isolated from antigenic extracts of S. mansoni adult worms. Swiss and C57 BL/6J mice were immunized with 30, 50, 100 and 200 microg antigen/mouse doses with and without Freund's adjuvant. Sera of immunized mice showed high reactivity against 74 kDa antigen. The highest protection level (76.6% in Swiss mice and 50.1% in C57 BL/6J mice) was obtained using the 50 microg antigen dose with and without Freund's adjuvant. A marked reduction in granuloma number and intensity of collagen and reticular granuloma fibers was observed. The 74 kDa antigen has the ability to protect mice of different strains and to modulate the host immune system.

Abstract
The spontaneous development of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus in non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice has been shown to be mediated by a Th1 response against beta cell antigens. It is known that in murine models of Schistosoma mansoni infection, egg production is associated with a switch from a Th1 to Th2 response. This subsequent dominance of a Th2 response in S.mansoni infected mice has been shown to influence the response to other infectious agents or antigens. We therefore determined whether infection with S.mansoni could influence the spontaneous incidence of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) in NOD mice. Infection with this helminth significantly reduced the spontaneous incidence of IDDM. IDDM was also prevented by injecting parasite eggs alone. Because until relatively recently humans might expect to succumb to a variety of infectious agents, the current freedom from infection might permit the expression of a genetic predisposition to autoimmune pathology and be responsible for the increased incidence of IDDM.

Abstract
Immunization of sheep with a protective antigen complex from the intestinal cells of Haemonchus contortus in Freund's adjuvant stimulated individually variable antibody responses but still conferred significant protection against parasite infection. Correlation between antibody concentration and degree of protection was suggestive of antibody being the effector mechanism. The antigen is known as Haemonchus galactose-containing glycoprotein complex (H-gal-GP) because it binds to lectins with a specificity for N-acetyl-galactosamine. Polypeptide composition analysis by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis indicated an apparent molecular weight of about 1000 kDa and SDS gels revealed four major polypeptides, containing between 2 and 5 disulphide linked subunits, nearly all being glycosylated. N-terminal amino acid sequence was obtained from 12 subunits, ten showing homologies with cDNAs from Haemonchus encoding either pepsin, metalloprotease or cysteine protease-like enzymes. pH optima, inhibitor and various substrate studies confirmed that the native complex possessed proteolytic activities in agreement with the sequence data. Although the cDNAs predicted water soluble enzymes, little of the complex was solubilized from worm membranes without the use of a detergent, such as Triton X-100. It is hypothesized that H-gal-GP is a gut membrane associated multiprotease complex which is involved in the digestion of the blood meal and which can be neutralized by specific antibodies with drastic consequences for the parasite.

Abstract
Experimental vaccine trials against hydatid disease have been undertaken in sheep using the EG95 recombinant vaccine. Challenge infection was with viable Echinococcus granulosus eggs obtained from a New Zealand isolate (dog/sheep cycle), an Australian isolate (dingo/wallaby cycle) and an Argentine isolate (dog/sheep cycle). Vaccination with EG95 conferred a high degree of protection against challenge with all three parasite isolates (protection range 96-100%). Taken together, the trials demonstrated that 86% of vaccinated sheep were completely free of viable hydatid cysts when examined approximately 1 year after challenge infection. Vaccination reduced the number of viable cysts by 99.3% compared with unvaccinated controls. These results suggest that the EG95 vaccine could have wide applicability as a new tool for use in hydatid control campaigns.

Abstract
Pigs were immunised with antigens derived from Taenia solium oncospheres or with a pool of three recombinant antigens from Taenia ovis, and subsequently challenged with T. solium eggs. The native oncosphere antigens induced 83% protection against viable, and 89% protection against the total number of cysticerci established following the challenge infection. Immunisation with the recombinant T. ovis antigens induced 93% protection against the establishment of viable cysticerci, and 74% protection against the total number of cysticerci. These results, and those achieved elsewhere with Taenia saginata and T. ovis, support the possibility of developing a practical vaccine to assist in the control of transmission of T. solium through pigs.

Abstract
Vaccine trials were conducted in Brahman cross cattle evaluating the efficacy of 4 native antigens purified from adult Fasciola gigantica flukes, and 1 recombinant F. gigantica antigen, as vaccines against tropical fasciolosis. The antigens tested were native glutathione S-transferase, cathepsin L, paramyosin, fatty acid binding protein (FABP), and a recombinant FABP expressed in E. coli, and were formulated in 1 or more of several adjuvants (Quil A, Squalene Montanide 80, MF59-100, Auspharm, NAGO, polylactoglycolide microspheres, Algammulin, DEAE, Freund's). Vaccination induced low, moderate or high antibody titres to the various antigens which were dependent on the adjuvant. Low but significant reductions in fluke burdens (31%, P < 0.026) and fluke wet weight (36%, P < 0.041) were only observed in cattle vaccinated with the native FABP in Freund's adjuvant. There was no correlation between total antibody titres to FABP and protection. The protection observed in cattle vaccinated with native FABP of F. gigantica supports the notion that this class of proteins is a useful target for protection of animals against Fasciola and extends the efficacy of FABPs to the tropical liver fluke. This is the first report of vaccination of cattle against F. gigantica with a purified protein.

Abstract
A purified 41-kDa protein of the rodent filaria Acanthocheilonema viteae was shown to protect jirds against a challenge infection. Subcutaneous immunization with the protein reduced the number of adult worms by up to 65% and the number of circulating microfilariae declined by up to 93% in these animals. The protein is located in the muscle tissues of adult worms and was identified as tropomyosin by N-terminal sequencing of the purified protein.

Abstract
Taenia solium cysticercosis is an important cause of human disease in many developing countries. Porcine cysticercosis is a vital link in the transmission of this disease and impairs meat production. A treatment for porcine cysticercosis may be an effective way of preventing human disease that would also benefit pig farmers, facilitating control programs in disease-endemic regions. Previous research suggests that reinfection with cysticercosis or immunotherapy with cysticercal antigens may cause degeneration of cysticerci, potentially curing porcine cysticercosis. Therefore, a blinded, randomized, controlled study to assess the efficacy and safety of immunotherapy in 28 naturally parasitized pigs was performed. Four groups of pigs with similar weights were inoculated twice with membrane-enriched cysticercal antigens (MA), saline, aqueous-soluble crude cysticercal antigens (AA) in adjuvant (Freund's complete then incomplete), or adjuvant alone. Immunotherapy was well tolerated but had no consistent effect on the macroscopic appearance of cysticerci or eosinophil count. Histopathologic findings were variable, with both severe and minimal inflammatory reactions seen in adjacent cysticerci in all pigs. Nine (64%) of 14 pigs given immunotherapy developed new antibody bands on electroimmunotransfer blot compared with one (7%) of 14 control pigs (P < 0.01). Treatment with AA in adjuvant caused a significant increase in the proportion of cysticerci that failed to evaginate and were, therefore, not viable for infecting humans (34% for pigs given AA in adjuvant compared with 10% for adjuvant alone; P < 0.04). Although immunotherapy caused a statistically significant decrease in the viability of cysticerci, this immunologic reaction was not great enough to prevent human disease.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to study the efficacy of praziquantel (PZQ) in potentially tolerized Schistosoma mansoni infected, egg-injected C57BL/6 mice, receiving multiple administrations of soluble egg antigen (SEA) intravenously (i.v.). Four animal groups were studied. Experimental group I received four injections of SEA (10 micrograms) intravenously on days -7, -5, -3 and -2 before infection and PZQ orally (500 mg/kg over two consecutive days 7 weeks post-infection. Three control groups received the following treatment: group II received the same tolerizing dose of SEA without PZQ, group III received PZQ in the same dose and at the same timing. Group IV received S. mansoni infection and egg injection 8 weeks post-infection and served as an infected, egg-injected control. Egg injection was conducted 8 weeks post-infection using viable S. mansoni eggs via the tail vein. Animals were killed 16 days post-egg injection, i.e. 10 weeks post-infection. After sacrifice, lungs and livers were removed for histopathological study and measurement of granuloma diameters. Spleens and serum were collected for the assay of lymphoproliferative response to SEA and antischistosomal immunoglobulins. The worm and egg burdens were also studied. Compared to infected, egg-injected untreated controls, repeated i.v. administrations of SEA down-regulated egg-injected (pulmonary) and egg-deposited (hepatic) granulomas and the lymphoproliferative response to SEA. Antischistosomal IgG level was increased. Susceptibility to S. mansoni infection was not found to be different from that in the infected, egg-injected controls. PZQ in the dose used caused complete eradication of worms, disappearance of immature egg stages, decrease in the number of mature eggs and an increase in the number of dead eggs. Hepatic granuloma diameter, lymphoproliferative response to SEA and IgG level were reduced. In mice receiving a combined regimen of multiple SEA administrations and PZQ with down-regulated granuloma and reduced lymphoproliferative response to SEA, the efficacy of PZQ was the same as in mice receiving PZQ alone. This was shown by comparable grades of worm and egg reduction. The histopathological examination of liver and lung sections in the different treated groups revealed moderate to small-sized hypocellular granulomas. Although no statistically significant difference was recorded between the mean granuloma diameters of the experimental group receiving both the tolerizing dose of SEA and PZQ compared to the group receiving the tolerizing dose of SEA without chemotherapy, this experimental group showed the least associated histopathological parenchymal changes. It appears from this work that combined SEA and PZQ provided many complementary goals; a reduction of egg-induced pathology, minimal parenchymal changes and the eradication of worms.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to assess the optimum conditions required to reduce the vigorous host granulomatous reaction around Schistosoma mansoni eggs. Soluble schistosomal egg antigen (SEA) at a concentration of 10 or 100 micrograms protein was administered i.p. or i.v. into unprimed C57BL/6 mice. SEA was injected either alone or in combination with cyclophosphamide (CY) 100 or 50 mg/kg via i.p. route. Seven or 14 days later viable eggs of S. mansoni were injected via the tail vein into treated groups and untreated normal controls. Mice were sacrificed 8, 16 and 24 days after the injection of eggs. The lungs were removed for histopathological study, measurement of granuloma diameter and phenotypic analysis of granuloma intralesional T-cell subsets. Compared to untreated controls, the lower concentration of SEA (10 micrograms) administered by the i.v. route 7 days before egg injection, induced a significant reduction in granuloma diameter 16 days after egg injection than that by the i.p. route or at a higher SEA concentration (100 micrograms). Compared to untreated controls, the higher dose of CY (100 mg/kg), given i.p. alone or in combination with 10 micrograms SEA by the i.v. or i.p. route, induced a significant reduction in granuloma diameter, while 50 mg/kg CY did not cause any reduction. The reduction in granuloma diameter by i.v. administration of low SEA concentration alone or in combination with CY IP, was associated with a decrease in the granuloma intralesional L3T4+/Lyt2+ ratio. The decrease in the ratio was due to an increase in Lyt2+ cells. The results suggest that the use of low dose SEA by the i.v. route alone or combined with an immunosuppressive drug ameliorates pathological changes concurrent with S. mansoni infection.

Abstract
The antigenic fraction of a cell free homogenate of each of Trichinella spiralis and T. pseudospiralis were prepared to be used for induction of immunity against S. mansoni in albino mice. The results of the study showed that immunization with either of the two antigens induced reduction in worm load ranging from 80.48% to 87.86% in the different groups of the study. Reduction in tissue egg count was also reported: Liver egg count was reduced from 69.47% to 100%. Intestinal egg count reduction ranged from 73.83% to 99.78%. There was also reduction in egg excretion as evidenced by diminution in stool egg count. Liver granulomas were less in number and size and showed accelerated reaction together with inhibition of fluorescence. These findings were more manifest in animals given T. spiralis than T. pseudospiralis antigen.

Abstract
A persistent, spasmic and productive cough known as filarial cough often occurs in dogs with dirofilariosis, and has been considered to be the consequence of an allergic response to Dirofilaria immitis. Twenty-one dogs with filarial cough were subcutaneously injected with worm antigen (200 micrograms of protein concentration) extracted from adult D. immitis once a day for 5 days. These injections were effective for 17 (81%) of the dogs, resulting in a complete cure for 7 dogs and marked improvement for 10 dogs.

Abstract
A phosphorylcholine (PC)-containing glycoprotein of 68,000 molecular weight (MW) was isolated from Trichinella spiralis. The potential of this antigen (Tsp) as a species-specific vaccine against Streptococcus pneumoniae was studied in both immunologically deficient (CBA/N) and normal (CFW) mice. Unlike the PC determinant found in S. pneumoniae, Tsp is a type 1 thymus-independent (TI-1) antigen, as it was able to stimulate PC-specific antibody production in CBA/N animals, though less well than in CFW mice. Immunological memory to this antigen was observed in both strains of mice, and the predominant class of antibodies formed was IgM. In further studies, Tsp-immunized CFW mice were protected against a fatal challenge of S. pneumoniae type 3. Protection in these animals is probably mediated by the PC-specific antibodies present, which comprised 87.9% of antibodies reactive to S. pneumoniae, or 58.7% of total antibodies formed.
