Evaluation of advanced oxidation processes for water and wastewater treatment - A critical review

Enhanced perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) degradation by electrochemical activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) during electrooxidation for water treatment

Improved treatment of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water is critically important in light of the proposed United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) drinking water regulations at ng L-1 levels. The addition of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) during electrooxidation (EO) can remove and destroy PFAS, but ng L-1 levels have not been tested, and PMS itself can be toxic. The objective of this research was to test peroxydisulfate (PDS, an alternative to PMS) activation by boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) degradation. The influence of PDS concentration, temperature, and environmental water matrix effects, and PFOA concentration on PDS-EO performance were systematically examined. Batch reactor experiments revealed that 99 % of PFOA was degraded and 69 % defluorination was achieved, confirming PFOA mineralization. Scavenging experiments implied that sulfate radicals (SO4-) and hydroxyl radicals (HO) played a more important role for PFOA degradation than 1O2 or electrons (e-). Further identification of PFOA degradation and transformation products by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis established plausible PFOA degradation pathways. The analysis corroborates that direct electron transfers at the electrode initiate PFOA oxidation and SO4- improves overall treatment by cleaving the CC bond between the C7F15 and COOH moieties in PFOA, leading to possible products such as C7F15 and F-. The perfluoroalkyl radicals can be oxidized by SO4- and HO, resulting in the formation of shorter chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (e.g., perfluorobutanoic acid [PFBA]), with eventual mineralization to CO2 and F-. At an environmentally relevant low initial concentration of 100 ng L-1 PFOA, 99 % degradation was achieved. The degradation of PFOA was slightly affected by the water matrix as less removal was observed in an environmental river water sample (91 %) compared to tests conducted in Milli-Q water (99 %). Overall, EO with PDS provided a destructive approach for the elimination of PFOA.

Ball-milled biochar-modified zero-valent aluminum activates peroxodisulfate for phenol degradation: Enhancement of catalysis by membrane-breaking effect

Zero-valent aluminum (ZVAl) is a potential activator for peroxodisulfate (PDS), yet the dense oxide film on its surface hampers electron transfer for the O-O bond cleavage of PDS. We synthesized zero-valent aluminum-biochar (BM-ZVAl@BC) composites through ball milling, which effectively disrupted the native oxide layer on BM-ZVAl@BC. Within the BM-ZVAl@BC/PDS system, biochar (BC) not only suppressed the rapid oxidation of BM-ZVAl@BC but also enhanced the dispersion and electron transfer rate of ZVAl, thereby improving the overall catalytic efficiency. Consequently, the phenol removal efficacy in the BM-ZVAl@BC/PDS system was notably improved. Optimal catalytic performance of the prepared BM-ZVAl@BC was achieved at a charcoal-to‑aluminum mass ratio of 2:1, resulting in 95.7 % phenol removal after 180 min. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis revealed that both free radicals (SO4•-, •OH, and O2•-) and non-radical species (1O2) contributed to phenol degradation, with SO4•- and •OH playing predominant roles. In summary, the BM-ZVAl@BC/PDS system represented an effective and promising technology for the remediation of phenolic water pollutants.

Automated H2O2 monitoring during photo-Fenton processes using an Arduino self-assembled automatic system

A cheap and easy to use Arduino self-assembled automatic system was employed to continuously monitor the hydrogen peroxide consumption during the photo-Fenton degradation of caffeine, selected as model target compound. The automatic system made it possible to measure the H2O2 concentration in the reaction cell via a colorimetric reaction and to take samples for HPLC analysis minimising the operator manual intervention and exposure to UV radiation. The obtained results were compared in terms of LOD and LOQ with H2O2 measurements manually performed using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, evidencing better analytical performance when using the automatic system; LOD and LOQ were respectively 0.032 mM and 0.106 mM for the automatic system against 0.064 mM and 0.213 mM for UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Furthermore, the photo-Fenton treatment was optimised by means of a Design of Experiments (DoE) investigating the effect of added H2O2 concentration, iron concentration and caffeine initial concentration on system performances. The use of the automatic device for such monitoring provided several advantages: automation (with consequent reduction of the workload), measurement increased precision, reduced reagents consumption and waste production in agreement with the principles of Green Analytical Chemistry.

Insight into the effect of UVC-based advanced oxidation processes on the interaction of typical microplastics and their derived disinfection byproducts during disinfection

The 10 µm polystyrene and polyethylene-terephthalate microplastics (MPs), prevalent in finished drink water, were employed to investigate the effect of normal dosage UVC-based advanced-oxidation-processes (UVC-AOPs) on the interaction between MPs and their derived disinfection-byproducts (DBPs) during subsequent chlorination-disinfection, in the presence of Br-, for the first time. The results indicated that UVC/H2O2 caused higher leaching of microplastic-derived dissolved-organic-matter (MP-DOM), with smaller and narrower molecular-weight-distribution than UVC and UVC/peroxymonosulfate (UVC/PMS). The trihalomethanes (as dominant DBPs) molar-formation-potentials (THMs-MFPs) for MP-DOM leached in different UVC-AOPs followed the order of UVC/H2O2>UVC/PMS>UVC. The adsorption of formed THMs, especially Br-THMs, back on MPs was observed in all MPs suspensions with or without UVC-AOPs pre-treatment. The Cl-THMs adsorption by MPs is more sensitive to UVC-AOPs than Br-THMs. The adsorption experiments showed that UVC-AOPs reduce the capacity but increase the rate of THMs adsorption by MPs, suggesting the halogen and hydrogen bonding forces governed the THMs adsorption rate while hydrophobic interaction determines their adsorption capacity. The UVC-AOPs pre-treatment sharply increased the total yield of THMs via both indirectly inducing MP-DOM leaching and directly increasing the THMs-MFPs of MPs by oxidation. 21.36-41.96% of formed THMs adsorbed back on the UVC-AOPs-pretreated MPs, which might increase the toxicity of MPs.

Protecting against micropollutants in water storage tanks using in-situ TiO2 coated quartz optical fibers

Photocatalyst-coated optical fibers (P-OFs) using UV-A LEDs offer a highly promising solution for the degradation of micropollutants within municipal, reuse, industrial or home distribution systems, by integrating P-OFs into water storage tanks. P-OFs have photocatalysts attached to bundles of optical fibers, enabling their direct deployment within tanks. This eliminates the necessity for photocatalyst slurries, which would require additional membrane or separation systems. However, a current limitation of P-OFs is light management, specifically light oversaturation of the coated photocatalysts and short light transmission distances along fibers. This study overcomes this limitation and reveals strategies to improve the light dissipation uniformity along P-OFs, and demonstrates the performance of P-OFs on degrading a model micropollutant, carbamazepine (CBZ). Key tunable variables of fibers and light emission conditions, including photocatalyst coating patchiness (p), minimum light incident angles (θm), radiant flux launched to fibers (Φi), and fiber diameters (D), were modeled to establish their relationships with the light dissipation uniformity in TiO2-coated quartz optical fibers (TiO2-QOFs). We then validated modeling insights by conducting experiments to examine how these variables influence the generation of evanescent waves which are localized energy on fiber surfaces, leading to either photocatalyst activation or the recapture of unused light back into fibers. We observed substantial enhancements in evanescent waves generation by decreasing p and increasing θm, resulting in uniform light dissipation which reduces light oversaturation and improves light transmission distances. Moreover, these optimizations led to a remarkable three-fold improvement in CBZ degradation rates and a 65% reduction in energy consumption. Such improvement substantially reduces the capital and operational cost and enhances practicality of energy-efficient photocatalysis without additional chemical oxidants for micropollutant degradation in water storage tanks.

Suppressing Organic Bromine but Promoting Bromate: Is the Ultraviolet/Ozone Process a Double-Edged Sword for the Toxicity of Wastewater to Mammalian Cells?

Brominated byproducts and toxicity generation are critical issues for ozone application to wastewater containing bromide. This study demonstrated that ultraviolet/ozone (UV/O3, 100 mJ/cm2, 1 mg-O3/mg-DOC) reduced the cytotoxicity of wastewater from 14.2 mg of pentol/L produced by ozonation to 4.3 mg of pentol/L (1 mg/L bromide, pH 7.0). The genotoxicity was also reduced from 1.65 to 0.17 μg-4-NQO/L by UV/O3. Compared with that of O3 alone, adsorbable organic bromine was reduced from 25.8 to 5.3 μg/L by UV/O3, but bromate increased from 32.9 to 71.4 μg/L. The UV/O3 process enhanced the removal of pre-existing precursors (highly unsaturated and phenolic compounds and poly aromatic hydrocarbons), while new precursors were generated, yet the combined effect of UV/O3 on precursors did not result in a significant change in toxicity. Instead, UV radiation inhibited HOBr concentration through both rapid O3 decomposition to reduce HOBr production and decomposition of the formed HOBr, thus suppressing the AOBr formation. However, the hydroxyl radical-dominated pathway in UV/O3 led to a significant increase of bromate. Considering both organic bromine and bromate, the UV/O3 process effectively controlled both cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of wastewater to mammalian cells, even though an emphasis should be also placed on managing elevated bromate. Futhermore, other end points are needed to evaluate the toxicity outcomes of the UV/O3 process.

Sn/Sb-assisted alum sludge electrodes for eliminating hydrophilic organic pollutants in self-produced H2O2 electro-Fenton system: Insights into the co-oxidation mediated by 1O2 and •OH(ads)

Few reports have focused on using particle electrodes with polar adsorbent properties in heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EF) system to improve the degradation of hydrophilic organic pollutants (HLOPs). In this study, a hydrophilic electrode Sn-Sb/AS was prepared by supporting metals Sn and Sb on alum sludge (AS), which can effectively degrade 91.68%, 92.54%, 89.62%, and 96.24% of the four types of HLOPs, chlorpyrifos (CPF), atrazine (ATZ), diuron (DIU), and glyphosate (PMG), respectively, within 40 min. The mineralization rates were 82.37%, 78.93%, 73.98%, and 85.65% for CPF, ATZ, DIU, and PMG, respectively. Based on the analysis of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance test, quenching test, and identified anthracene endoperoxide, the degradation at the cathode was attributed to non-radical oxidation via interaction with 1O2. In contrast, the anodic oxidation occurred via direct electron transfer at the anode and/or oxidation via interaction with adsorbed •OH (•OHads) around the particle electrodes. Furthermore, the reaction sites were calculated by Density functional theory (DFT) and Fukui function, corresponding to the electrophilic attack (fA-) of 1O2 and anodic direct oxidation, besides, the radical attack (fA0) of •OH(ads). Herein, this study proposes a targeted elimination strategy for HLOPs in wastewater treatment using particle electrodes with polar adsorbent properties in EF system.

Vacuum-ultraviolet based advanced oxidation and reduction processes for water treatment

The use of vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) photolysis in water treatment has been gaining significant interest due to its efficacy in degrading refractory organic contaminants and eliminating oxyanions. In recent years, the reactive species driving pollutant decomposition in VUV-based advanced oxidation and reduction processes (VUV-AOPs and VUV-ARPs) have been identified. This review aims to provide a concise overview of VUV photolysis and its advancements in water treatment. We begin with an introduction to VUV irradiation, followed by a summary of the primary reactive species in both VUV-AOPs and VUV-ARPs. We then explore the factors influencing VUV-photolysis in water treatment, including VUV irradiation dose, catalysts or activators, dissolved gases, water matrix components (e.g., DOM and inorganic anions), and solution pH. In VUV-AOPs, the predominant reactive species are hydroxyl radicals (˙OH), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and ozone (O3). Conversely, in VUV-ARPs, the main reactive species are the hydrated electron (eaq-) and hydrogen atom (˙H). It is worth noting that VUV-based advanced oxidation/reduction processes (VUV-AORPs) can transit between VUV-AOPs and VUV-ARPs based on the externally added chemicals and dissolved gases in the solution. Increase of the VUV irradiation dose and the concentration of catalysts/activators enhances the degradation of contaminants, whereas DOM and inorganic anions inhibit the reaction. The pH influences the redox potential of ˙OH, the speciation of contaminants and activators, and thus the overall performance of the VUV-AOPs. Conversely, an alkaline pH is favored in VUV-ARPs because eaq- predominates at higher pH.

Simultaneous synthesis of super-paramagnetic hydrochar in a one-pot using subcritical water medium and evaluation of its photocatalytic activity

The unregulated release of chemical dyes into the environment presents considerable environmental hazards when left untreated. Photocatalytic degradation, acknowledged as an eco-friendly and cost-effective method, has garnered attention for its efficacy in eliminating organic pollutants like dye. Consequently, the development of multifunctional materials with different applications in environmental and catalytic fields emerges as a promising avenue. Recognizing the significance of integrating catalysts and porous materials for enhancing interactions between pollutants and photo-sensitive substances, magnetic hydrochar emerges as a solution offering heightened efficiency, scalability, recyclability, and broad applicability in various environmental processes, notably wastewater treatment, due to its facile separation capability. In this study, Fe3O4-based, super-paramagnetic hydrochar (SMHC) was simultaneously synthesized in a single step using a coconut shell in the subcritical water medium. A thorough analysis was conducted on both raw hydrochar (RHC) and SMHC to unravel the mechanism of interaction between Fe3O4 nanoparticles and the hydrochar matrix. The synthesized hydrochar exhibited super-paramagnetic characteristics, with a saturation magnetization of 23.7 emu/g and a magnetic hysteresis loop. SMHC displayed a BET surface area of 42.6 m2/g and an average pore size of 26.3 nm, indicating a mesoporous structure according to nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. XRD analysis revealed magnetic crystal sizes in the obtained SMHC to be 13.7 nm. The photocatalytic performance of SMHC was evaluated under visible light exposure in the presence of H2O2 for Astrazon yellow (AY) dye degradation, with optimization conducted using response surface methodology (RSM). The most substantial dye removal, reaching 92.83%, was achieved with 0.4% H2O2 at a 20 mg/L dye concentration and an 80-min reaction duration.

Attuning doped ZnO-based composites for an effective light-driven mineralization of pharmaceuticals via PMS activation

Water treatment technologies need to go beyond the current control of organic contaminants and ensure access to potable water. However, existing methods are still costly and often inadequate. In this context, novel catalysts that improve the mineralization degree of a wider range of pharmaceuticals through more benign and less consuming methodologies are highly sought after. ZnO, especially when doped, is a well-known semiconductor that also excels in the photocatalytic removal of persistent organic pollutants. In this study, we investigated the effect of doping ZnO nanoparticles with either copper, gallium or indium on the structure, morphology, photophysical properties and photocatalytic mineralization of pharmaceuticals. Their architecture was further improved through the fabrication of composites, pairing the best performing doped ZnO with either BaFe12O19 or nickel nanoparticles. Their suitability was tested on a complex 60-ppm multi-pollutant solution (tetracycline, levofloxacin and lansoprazole). The activation strategy combined photocatalysis with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as an environmentally friendly source of highly oxidative sulfate radicals. The alliance of doped ZnO and BaFe12O19 was particularly successful, resulting in magnetic microcroquette-shaped composites with excellent inter-component synergy. In fact, indium outperformed the other proposed metal dopants, exceeding 97% mineralization after 1 h and achieving complete elimination after 3 h. All composites excelled in terms of reusability, with no catalytic loss after 10 consecutive cycles and minimal leakage of metal ions, highlighting their applicability in water remediation.

Ultraviolet activation of monochloramine to treat contaminants of emerging concern: reactions, operating parameters, byproducts, and opportunities

The presence of CECs in aquatic systems has raised significant concern since they are potentially harmful to the environment and human health. Eliminating CECs has led to the development of alternatives to treat wastewater, such as advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). The ultraviolet-mediated activation of monochloramine (UV/NH2Cl) is a novel and relatively unexplored AOPs for treating pollutants in wastewater systems. This process involves the production of amino radicals (•NH2) and chlorine radicals (Cl•) from the UV irradiation of NH2Cl. Studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in mitigating various CECs, exhibiting advantages, such as the potential to control the amount of toxic disinfection byproducts (TDBPs) formed, low costs of reagents, and low energy consumption. However, the strong influence of operating parameters in the degradation efficiency and existence of NH2Cl, the lack of studies of its use in real matrices and techno-economic assessments, low selectivity, and prolonged treatment periods must be overcome to make this technology more competitive with more mature AOPs. This review article revisits the state-of-the-art of the UV/NH2Cl technology to eliminate pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), micropollutants from the food industry, pesticides, and industrial products in aqueous media. The reactions involved in the production of radicals and the influence of operating parameters are covered to understand the formation of TDBPs and the main challenges and limitations of the UV/NH2Cl to degrade CECs. This review article generates critical knowledge about the UV/NH2Cl process, expanding the horizon for a better application of this technology in treating water contaminated with CECs.

XPS valence band observable light-responsive system for photocatalytic acid Red114 dye decomposition using a ZnO-Cu2O heterojunction

ZnO-Cu2O composites were made as photocatalysts in a range of different amounts using an easy, cheap, and environment-friendly coprecipitation method due to their superior visible light activity to remove pollutants from the surrounding atmosphere. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) have demonstrated that ZnO-Cu2O catalysts are made of highly pure hexagonal ZnO and cubic Cu2O. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has confirmed that there is a substantial interaction between the two phases of the resultant catalyst. The optical characterizations of the synthesized ZnO-Cu2O composite were done via UV-vis reflectance spectroscopy. Due to the doping on ZnO, the absorption range of the ZnO-Cu2O catalyst is shifted from the ultraviolet to the visible region due to diffuse reflection. The degradation efficiency is affected by the Ratio of ZnO: Cu2O and ZnO-Cu2O composite with a proportion of 90:10 exhibited the most prominent photocatalytic activity on Acid Red 114, with a pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.05032 min-1 that was 6 and 11 times greater than those of ZnO and Cu2O, respectively. The maximum degradation efficiency is 97 %. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the composite is caused by the synergistic interaction of ZnO and Cu2O, which improves visible light absorption by lowering band gap energy and decreasing the rate at which the electron-hole pairs recombine. The scavenging experiment confirmed that hydroxyl radical was the dominant species for the photodegradation of Acid Red 114. Notably, the recycling test demonstrated the ZnO-Cu2O photocatalyst was highly stable and recyclable. These results suggest that the ZnO-Cu2O mix might be able to clean up environmental pollutants when it meets visible light.

Iron single atoms anchored on ultrathin carbon nitride photocatalyst for visible light-driven water decontamination

Graphitic carbon nitride has gained considerable attention as a visible-light photocatalyst. However, its photocatalytic efficiency is restricted by its limited capacity for absorbing visible light and swift recombination of charge carriers. To overcome this bottleneck, we fabricated an atomic Fe-dispersed ultrathin carbon nitride (Fe-UTCN) photocatalyst via one-step thermal polymerization. Fe-UTCN showed high efficiency in the photodegradation of acetaminophen (APAP), achieving > 90 % elimination within 60-min visible light irradiation. The anchoring of Fe atoms improved the photocatalytic activity of UTCN by narrowing the bandgap from 2.50 eV to 2.33 eV and suppressing radiative recombination. Calculations by density functional theory revealed that the Fe-N4 sites (adsorption energy of - 3.10 eV) were preferred over the UTCN sites (adsorption energy of - 0.18 eV) for the adsorption of oxygen and the subsequent formation of O2•-, the dominant reactive species in the degradation of APAP. Notably, the Fe-UTCN catalyst exhibited good stability after five successive runs and was applicable to complex water matrices. Therefore, Fe-UTCN, a noble-metal-free photocatalyst, is a promising candidate for visible light-driven water decontamination.

Tailored Metal-Organic Frameworks for Water Purification: Perfluorinated Fe-MOFs for Enhanced Heterogeneous Catalytic Ozonation

An industrially viable catalyst for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO) in water purification requires the characteristics of good dispersion of active species on its surface, efficient electron transfer for ozone decay, and maximum active species utilization. While metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent an attractive platform for HCO, the metal nodes in the unmodified MOFs exhibit low catalytic activity. Herein, we present a perfluorinated Fe-MOF catalyst by substituting H atoms on the metalated ligands with F atoms (termed 4F-MIL-88B) to induce structure evolution. The Lewis acidity of 4F-MIL-88B was enhanced via the formation of Fe nodes, tailoring the electron distribution on the catalyst surface. As a result of catalyst modification, the rate constant for degradation of the target compounds examined increased by ∼700% compared with that observed for the unmodified catalyst. Experimental evidence and theoretical calculations showed that the modulated polarity and the enhanced electron transfer between the catalyst and ozone molecules contributed to the adsorption and transformation of O3 to •OH on the catalyst surface. Overall, the results of this study highlight the significance of tailoring the metalated ligands to develop highly efficient and stable MOF catalysts for HCO and provide an in-depth mechanistic understanding of their structure-function evolution, which is expected to facilitate the applications of nanomaterial-based processes in water purification.

Wavelength dependency and photosensitizer effects in UV-LED photodegradation of iohexol

Iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICM) are ubiquitously present in water sources and challenging to eliminate using conventional processes, posing a significant risk to aquatic ecosystems. Ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LED) emerge as a promising technology for transforming micropollutants in water, boasting advantages such as diverse wavelengths, elimination of chemical additives, and no induction of microorganisms' resistance to disinfectants. The research reveals that iohexol (IOX) degradation escalates as UV wavelength decreases, attributed to enhanced photon utilization efficiency. Pseudo-first-order rate constants (kobs) were determined as 3.70, 2.60, 1.31 and 0.65 cm2 J-1 at UV-LED wavelengths of 255, 265, 275 and 285 nm, respectively. The optical properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and anions undeniably influence the UV-LED photolysis process through photon competition and the generation of reactive substances. The influence of Cl- on IOX degradation was insignificant at UV-LED 255, but it promoted IOX degradation at 265, 275 and 285 nm. IOX degradation was accelerated by ClO2-, NO3-and HA due to the formation of various reactive species. In the presence of NO3-, the kobs of IOX followed the order: 265 > 255 > 275 > 285 nm. Photosensitizers altered the spectral dependence of IOX, and the intermediate photoactivity products were detected using electron spin resonance. The transformation pathways of IOX were determined through density functional theory calculations and experiments. Disinfection by-products (DBPs) yields of IOX during UV-LED irradiation decreased as the wavelength increased: 255 > 265 > 275 > 285 nm. The cytotoxicity index value decreased as the UV-LED wavelength increased from 255 to 285 nm. These findings are crucial for selecting the most efficient wavelength for UV-LED degradation of ICM and will benefit future water purification design.

Application of catalytic ozonation using Y zeolite in the elimination of pharmaceuticals in effluents from municipal wastewater treatment plants

Catalytic ozonation using faujasite-type Y zeolite with two different SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratios (60 and 12) was evaluated for the first time in the removal of 25 pharmaceutical compounds (PhCs) present in real effluents from two municipal wastewater treatment plants both located in the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Additionally, control experiments including adsorption and direct ozonation, were conducted to better understand the fundamental aspects of the different individual systems in wastewater samples. Commercial zeolites were used in sodium form (NaY). The results showed that the simultaneous use of ozone and NaY zeolites significantly improved the micropollutants degradation rate, able to degrade 95 % of the total mixture of PhCs within the early 9 min using the zeolite NaY-12 (24.4 mg O3 L-1 consumed), while 12 min of reaction with the zeolite NaY-60 (31 mg O3 L-1 consumed). In the case of individual experiments, ozonation removed 95 % of the total mixture of PhCs after 25 min (46.2 mg O3 L-1 consumed), while the direct adsorption, after 60 min of contact time, eliminated 30 % and 44 % using the NaY-12 and NaY-60 zeolites, respectively. Results showed that the Brønsted acid sites seemed to play an important role in the effectiveness of the treatment with ozone. Finally, the environmental assessment showed that the total risk quotients of pharmaceuticals were reduced between 87 %-99 % after ozonation in the presence of NaY-60 and NaY-12 zeolites. The results of this study demonstrate that catalytic ozonation using NaY zeolites as catalysts is a promising alternative for micropollutant elimination in real-world wastewater matrices.

Advanced oxidation processes for water and wastewater treatment - Guidance for systematic future research

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are a growing research field with a large variety of different process variants and materials being tested at laboratory scale. However, despite extensive research in recent years and decades, many variants have not been transitioned to pilot- and full-scale operation. One major concern are the inconsistent experimental approaches applied across different studies that impede identification, comparison, and upscaling of the most promising AOPs. The aim of this tutorial review is to streamline future studies on the development of new solutions and materials for advanced oxidation by providing guidance for comparable and scalable oxidation experiments. We discuss recent developments in catalytic, ozone-based, radiation-driven, and other AOPs, and outline future perspectives and research needs. Since standardized experimental procedures are not available for most AOPs, we propose basic rules and key parameters for lab-scale evaluation of new AOPs including selection of suitable probe compounds and scavengers for the measurement of (major) reactive species. A two-phase approach to assess new AOP concepts is proposed, consisting of (i) basic research and proof-of-concept (technology readiness levels (TRL) 1-3), followed by (ii) process development in the intended water matrix including a cost comparison with an established process, applying comparable and scalable parameters such as UV fluence or ozone consumption (TRL 3-5). Subsequent demonstration of the new process (TRL 6-7) is briefly discussed, too. Finally, we highlight important research tools for a thorough mechanistic process evaluation and risk assessment including screening for transformation products that should be based on chemical logic and combined with complementary tools (mass balance, chemical calculations).

Efficiency of ozonation and sulfate radical - AOP for removal of pharmaceuticals, corrosion inhibitors, x-ray contrast media and perfluorinated compounds from reverse osmosis concentrates

This study investigated the elimination of pharmaceuticals, corrosion inhibitors, x-ray contrast media and perfluorinated compounds from reverse osmosis concentrates during ozonation and UV/persulfate processes. Second-order rate constants for the reactions of candesartan, irbesartan, methyl-benzotriazole, and chloro‑benzotriazole with sulfate radical (SO4·-) were determined for the first time. Experiments were conducted in buffered pure water, in buffered water added with the matrix substituents chloride, carbonate, NOM, and reverse osmosis concentrate with spiked micropollutants (MP). UV/persulfate eliminated all MP to a higher extent than ozonation in RO concentrates due to the higher yield of oxidative species and photolytic degradation. Compounds with electron-rich moieties such as carbamazepine, diclofenac, metoprolol, and sulfamethoxazole were completely eliminated with small ozone doses (< 0.5 mg O3 / mg DOC) and with a small fluence (< 5000 J m-2) in UV/persulfate processes. Photosensitive compounds with high reactivity towards hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and SO4·- like the x-ray contrast media Iopamidol, Iohexol, and Amidotrizoic acid were successfully eliminated with a reasonable fluence in UV/persulfate, whereas these compounds persist in ozonation at common ozone dosages. However, much higher fluences and ozone dosages were required for the least reactive compounds like the class of benzotriazoles. Comparing the application of both oxidative processes to the RO concentrate, ozonation has the disadvantage of forming bromate. The energy input of both processes strongly depends on the target compounds to be eliminated. For the elimination of compounds such as sulfamethoxazole, ozonation is a feasible technique, whereas UV/persulfate is better suited for the elimination of recalcitrant compounds such as x-ray contrast media. In general, oxidative process treatment of RO concentrate could be applied to partly abate micropollutants before discharge.

Approaches for Enhancing Wastewater Treatment of Photocatalytic Fuel Cells: A Review

Environmental pollution and energy crises have garnered global attention. The substantial discharge of organic waste into water bodies has led to profound environmental contamination. Photocatalytic fuel cells (PFCs) enabling the simultaneous removal of refractory contaminants and recovery of the chemical energy contained in organic pollutants provides a potential strategy to solve environmental issues and the energy crisis. This review will discuss the fundamentals, working principle, and configuration development of PFCs and photocatalytic microbial fuel cells (PMFCs). We particularly focus on the strategies for improving the wastewater treatment performance of PFCs/PMFCs in terms of coupled advanced oxidation processes, the rational design of high-efficiency electrodes, and the strengthening of the mass transfer process. The significant potential of PFCs/PMFCs in various fields is further discussed in detail. This review is intended to provide some guidance for the better implementation and widespread adoption of PFC wastewater treatment technologies.

Comprehensive analysis of a widely pharmaceutical, furosemide, and its degradation products in aquatic systems: Occurrence, fate, and ecotoxicity

Many pharmaceutical compounds end up in the environment due to incomplete removal by wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Some compounds are sometimes present in significant concentrations and therefore represent a risk to the aquatic environment. Furosemide is one of the most widely used drugs in the world. Considered as an essential drug by the World Health Organization, this powerful loop diuretic is used extensively to treat hypertension, heart and kidney failure and many other purposes. However, this important consumption also results in a significant release of furosemide in wastewater and in the receiving environment where concentrations of a few hundred ng/L to several thousand have been found in the literature, making furosemide a compound of great concern. Also, during its transport in wastewater systems and WWTPs, furosemide can be degraded by various processes resulting in the production of more than 74 by-products. Furosemide may therefore present a significant risk to ecosystem health due not only to its direct cytotoxic, genotoxic and hepatotoxic effects in animals, but also indirectly through its transformation products, which are poorly characterized. Many articles classify furosemide as a priority pollutant according to its occurrence in the environment, its persistence, its elimination by WWTPs, its toxicity and ecotoxicity. Here, we present a state-of-the-art review of this emerging pollutant of interest, tracking it, from its consumption to its fate in the aquatic environment. Discussion points include the occurrence of furosemide in various matrices, the efficiency of many processes for the degradation of furosemide, the subsequent production of degradation products following these treatments, as well as their toxicity.

Experimental and theoretical insight into carbamazepine degradation by chlorine-based advanced oxidation processes: Efficiency, energy consumption, mechanism and DBPs formation

Chlorine has been widely used in different advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for micropollutants removal. In this study, different chlorine-based AOPs, namely medium pressure (MP) UV/chlorine, low pressure (LP) UV/chlorine, and in-situ chlorination, were compared for carbamazepine (CBZ) removal efficiency, energy consumption, and disinfection by-products (DBPs) formation. All three processes could achieve nearly 100% CBZ removal, while the reaction time needed by in-situ chlorination was double the time required by UV/chlorine processes. The energy consumed per magnitude of CBZ removed (EE/O) of MP UV/chlorine was 13 times higher than that of LP UV/chlorine, and relative to that of in-situ chlorination process. Accordingly, MP and LP UV/chlorine processes generated one to two orders of magnitude more hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and reactive chlorine species (RCS) than in-situ chlorination. Besides, RCS were the dominant reactive species, contributing to 78.3%, 75.6%, and 71.6% of CBZ removal in MP, LP UV/chlorine, and in-situ chlorination, respectively. According to the Gibbs free energy barriers between CBZ and RCS/•OH calculated based on density functional theory (DFT), RCS had more reaction routes with CBZ and showed lower energy barrier in the main CBZ degradation pathways like epoxidation and formation of iminostilbene. When applied to secondary wastewater effluent, UV/chlorine and in-situ chlorination produced overall DBPs ranging from 104.77 to 135.41 µg/L. However, the production of chlorate during UV/chlorine processes was 15 times higher than that during in-situ chlorination.

Ultraviolet technology application in urban water supply and wastewater treatment in China: Issues, challenges and future directions

This study thoroughly explores the application of Ultraviolet (UV) water treatment technology in urban wastewater treatment and water supply in China, highlighting its crucial role in enhancing water quality safety. UV technology, with its environmentally friendly and low-carbon characteristics, is deemed more in line with the demands of sustainable development compared to traditional chemical disinfection methods. The widespread application of UV technology in urban wastewater treatment in China, particularly in the context of urban sewage treatment, is examined. However, to better promote and apply UV technology, there is a need to deepen the understanding of this technology and its application among a broad base of users and design units. The importance of gaining in-depth knowledge about the performance of UV water treatment equipment, the design calculation basis, and operational considerations, as well as the ongoing development of relevant standards, is underscored to ensure that the equipment used in projects complies with engineering design and production requirements. Furthermore, the positive trend of UV technology in the field of advanced oxidation, indicating a promising trajectory for engineering applications, is pointed out. Regarding the prospects of industrial development, a thorough analysis is conducted in the article, emphasizing the necessity for all stakeholders to collaborate and adopt a multi-level approach to promote the sustainable development and application of UV water treatment technology. This collaborative effort is crucial for providing effective safeguards for China's environment, ecology, and human health.

Design of a multi-electrode dielectric barrier discharge reactor and experimental study on the degradation of atrazine in water

Atrazine (ATZ) is widely used in agriculture as a triazine herbicide, and its long-term use can cause serious environmental pollution. This paper independently designed a multi-electrode reactor, explored the output power and energy utilization efficiency of the dielectric barrier discharge reactor, and used the dielectric barrier discharge reactor to treat ATZ solution. The results showed that the degradation efficiency of ATZ was 96.39% at 30 min at an initial ATZ concentration of 14 mg/L, an input voltage of 34 kV, an input current of 1.38 mA, an aeration rate of 100 L/h, and a treatment water volume of 150 mL. The degradation of ATZ was significantly increased by the addition of persulfate (PS), Fe2+, and H2O2. After adding radical quenchers (EtOH, p-BQ, and FFA), the degradation efficiency of ATZ decreased, indicating that free radicals (•OH, •O2-, and 1O2) played a key role in the degradation process of ATZ.

Enhanced Heterogeneous Fenton Degradation of Organic Dyes by Bimetallic Zirconia-Based Catalysts

The qualitative impact of pollutants on water quality is mainly related to their nature and their concentration, but in any case, they determine a strong impact on the involved ecosystems. In particular, refractory organic compounds represent a critical challenge, and several degradation processes have been studied and developed for their removal. Among them, heterogeneous Fenton treatment is a promising technology for wastewater and liquid waste remediation. Here, we have developed mono- and bimetallic formulations based on Co, Cu, Fe, and Mn, which were investigated for the degradation of three model organic dyes (methylene blue, rhodamine B, and malachite green). The treated samples were then analyzed by means of UV-vis spectrophotometry techniques. Bimetallic iron-based materials achieved almost complete degradation of all three model molecules in very short time. The Mn-Fe catalyst resulted in the best formulation with an almost complete degradation of methylene blue and malachite green at pH 5 in 5 min and of rhodamine B at pH 3 in 30 min. The results suggest that these formulations can be applied for the treatment of a broad range of liquid wastes comprising complex and variable organic pollutants. The investigated catalysts are extremely promising when compared to other systems reported in the literature.

Assessing the Chemical-Free Oxidation of Trace Organic Chemicals by VUV/UV as an Alternative to Conventional UV/H2O2

Low-pressure mercury lamps with high-purity quartz can emit both vacuum-UV (VUV, 185 nm) and UV (254 nm) and are commercially available and promising for eliminating recalcitrant organic pollutants. The feasibility of VUV/UV as a chemical-free oxidation process was verified and quantitatively assessed by the concept of H2O2 equivalence (EQH2O2), at which UV/H2O2 showed the same performance as VUV/UV for the degradation of trace organic contaminants (TOrCs). Although VUV showed superior H2O activation and oxidation performance, its performance highly varied as a function of light path length (Lp) in water, while that of UV/H2O2 proportionally decreased with decreasing H2O2 dose regardless of Lp. On increasing Lp from 1.0 to 3.0 cm, the EQH2O2 of VUV/UV decreased from 0.81 to 0.22 mM H2O2. Chloride and nitrate hardly influenced UV/H2O2, but they dramatically inhibited VUV/UV. The competitive absorbance of VUV by chloride and nitrate was verified as the main reason. The inhibitory effect was partially compensated by •OH formation from the propagation reactions of chloride or nitrate VUV photolysis, which was verified by kinetic modeling in Kintecus. In water with an Lp of 2.0 cm, the EQH2O2 of VUV/UV decreased from 0.43 to 0.17 mM (60.8% decrease) on increasing the chloride concentration from 0 to 15 mM and to 0.20 mM (53.5% decrease) at 4 mM nitrate. The results of this study provide a comprehensive understanding of VUV/UV oxidation in comparison to UV/H2O2, which underscores the suitability and efficiency of chemical-free oxidation with VUV/UV.

Switching reactive oxygen species reactions derived from Mn-Pt anchored zeolite for selective catalytic ozonation

Rationally switching reactive oxygen species (ROS) reactions in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is urgently needed to improve the adaptability and efficiency for the engineering application. Herein we synthesized bimetallic Mn-Pt catalysts based on zeolite to realize the switching of ROS reactions in catalytic ozonation for sustainable degradation of organic pollutants from water. The ROS reactions switched from singlet oxygen (1O2, 71.01%) to radical-dominated (93.79%) pathway by simply introducing defects and changing Pt/Mn ratios. The oxygen vacancy induced by anchoring Mn-Pt species from zeolite external surface (MnPt/H-Beta) to internal framework (MnPt@Si-Beta) exposes more electron-rich Pt2+/Pt4+ redox sites, accelerating the decomposition of O3 to generate •OH via electron transfer and switching ROS reactions. The Mn site acted as a bridge plays a critical role in conducting electrons from organic pollutants to Pt sites, which solidly solves the electron loss of catalysts, facilitating the efficient degradation of pollutants. A 34.7-fold increase in phenol degradation compared with the non-catalytic ozonation and an excellent catalytic stability are achieved by MnPt@Si-Beta/O3. The 1O2-dominated ROS reaction originated from MnPt/H-Beta/O3 exhibits superior performances in anti-interference for Cl-, HCO3-, NO3-, and SO4-. This work establishes a novel strategy for switching ROS reactions to expand the targeted applications of O3 based AOPs for environmental remediation.

Clay minerals/sodium alginate/polyethylene hydrogel adsorbents control the selective adsorption and reduction of uranium: Experimental optimization and Monte Carlo simulation study

Clay minerals formations are potential geological barrier (host rocks) for the long-rerm storage of uranium tailing in deep geological repositories. However, there are still obstacles to the efficient retardation of uranium because of the competition between negatively charged regions at the clay minerals end face, surface and between layers, as well as low mineralization capacity. Herein, employing a simple method, we used sodium alginate (SA), an inexpensive natural polymer material, polyethylene (PE), and the natural clay minerals montmorillonite (Mt), nontronite (Nt), and beidellite (Bd) to prepare three hydrogel adsorbents, (denoted as Mt/PE-@SA, Nt/PE-@SA, and Bd/PE-@SA), respectively. The application of obtained hydrogel adsorbents further extends to uranium(VI) removal from aqueous. Due to the synergistic action of SA group and PE group, hydrogel adsorbents showed select adsorption and mineralization effect on uranium(VI), among which the maximum uranium(VI) adsorption capacity of Nt/PE-@SA was 133.3 mg·g-1 and Mt/PE-@SA exhibited strong selectivity for uranium(VI) in the presence of coexisting metal ions. Cyclic voltammetry studies indicated the mitigation and immobilization of uranium species onto adsorbents by both reduction and mineralization. Besides, the synergistic adsorption of SA and PE on clay minerals was hypothesized, and the idea was supported by structure optimizations results from Monte Carlo dynamics simulation (MCD). Three obtained hydrogel adsorbents structural model was constructed based on its physicochemical characterization, the low energy adsorption sites and adsorption energies are investigated using MCD simulation. The simulation results show that obtained hydrogel adsorbents have a strong interaction with uranium(VI), which ensures the high adsorption capacity of those materials. Most importantly, this work demonstrates a new strategy for preparing mineral-based hydrogel adsorbents with enough stability and provides a new perspective for uranium(VI) removal in complex environment.

Trends in low temperature and non-thermal technologies for the degradation of persistent organic pollutants

The daunting effects of persistent organic pollutants on humans, animals, and the environment cannot be overemphasized. Their fate, persistence, long-range transport, and bioavailability have made them an environmental stressor of concern which has attracted the interest of the research community. Concerted efforts have been made by relevant organizations utilizing legislative laws to ban their production and get rid of them completely for the sake of public health. However, they have remained refractive in different compartments of the environment. Their bioavailability is majorly a function of different anthropogenic activities. Landfilling and incineration are among the earliest classical means of environmental remediation of waste; however, they are not sustainable due to the seepage of contaminants in landfills, the release of toxic gases into the atmosphere and energy requirements during incineration. Other advanced waste destruction technologies have been explored for the degradation of these recalcitrant pollutants; although, some are efficient, but are limited by high amounts of energy consumption, the use of organic solvents and hazardous chemicals, high capital and operational cost, and lack of public trust. Thus, this study has systematically reviewed different contaminant degradation technologies, their efficiency, and feasibility. Finally, based on techno-economic feasibility, non-invasiveness, efficiency, and environmental friendliness; radiation technology can be considered a viable alternative for the environmental remediation of contaminants in all environmental matrices at bench-, pilot-, and industrial-scale.

Effective Activation of Peroxymonosulfate by Oxygen Vacancy Induced Musa Basjoo Biochar to Degrade Sulfamethoxazole: Efficiency and Mechanism

Biochar materials have garnered attention as potential catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation due to their cost-effectiveness, notable specific surface area, and advantageous structural properties. In this study, a suite of plantain-derived biochar (MBB-400, MBB-600, and MBB-800), possessing a well-defined pore structure and a substantial number of uniformly distributed active sites (oxygen vacancy, OVs), was synthesized through a facile calcination process at varying temperatures (400, 600, and 800 °C). These materials were designed for the activation of PMS in the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Experimental investigations revealed that OVs not only functioned as enriched sites for pollutants, enhancing the opportunities for free radicals (•OH/SO4•-) and surface-bound radicals (SBRs) to attack pollutants, but also served as channels for intramolecular charge transfer leaps. This role contributed to a reduction in interfacial charge transfer resistance, expediting electron transfer rates with PMS, thereby accelerating the decomposition of pollutants. Capitalizing on these merits, the MBB-800/PMS system displayed a 61-fold enhancement in the conversion rate for SMX degradation compared to inactivated MBB/PMS system. Furthermore, the MBB-800 exhibited less cytotoxicity towards rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells. Hence, the straightforward calcination synthesis of MBB-800 emerges as a promising biochar catalyst with vast potential for sustainable and efficient wastewater treatment and environmental remediation.

Cyanide-Isolated Cobalt Catalyst for Ultraefficient Advanced Oxidation Treatment

Catalyst design with a "Co-N-C" structure at the atomic level has shown great interest for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation toward advanced oxidation water treatment. Here, we present an innovative way of producing cobalt hexacyanocobaltate (Co-HCC) with an abundance of atomically isolated CoII-NC sites at the outer surface. This material allows ultraefficient PMS activation to generate plenty of sulfate and hydroxyl radicals, with a turnover frequency much higher than those of most cobalt-based catalysts reported so far and even the homogeneous catalysis by Co2+ ions. We gained fundamental insights on its unprecedently high catalytic performance based on experimental results and computational study. Then, we controlled the growth of Co-HCC on a ceramic membrane to form a confined oxidation environment that utilizes the extended surface area and maximal exposure of short-lived radicals for a fast removal of organic pollutants that enter the pores. As a result, this catalytic membrane achieves complete disruption of micropollutants under a water flux up to 10,000 LMH (merely 0.2 s retention time) and further >90% mineralization of organic pollutants in complex industrial wastewater matrices (<100 s retention time), together with the merits of operational simplicity and great longevity (2 weeks continuous run). Our study elicits a new milestone in "Co-N-C" catalyst structure design for PMS activation and highlights the great interest of producing catalytic membranes for a confined treatment of organic pollutants from partial oxidation to complete mineralization as a new benchmark.

Preparation of Ti/SnO2-Sb2O4-La Electrode with TiO2 Nanotubes Intermediate Layer and the Electrochemical Oxidation Performance of Rhodamine B

A La-doped Ti/SnO2-Sb2O4 electrode with TiO2-NTs intermediate layer (Ti/TiO2-NTs/SnO2-Sb2O4-La) was created via the electrodeposition technique. The physicochemical and electrochemical properties of the electrode were analyzed through FESEM, XRD, XPS, CV, and LSV electrochemical tests. The results showed that TiO2-NTs were tightly packed on the surface of Ti substrate, thus improving the binding force of the SnO2-Sb2O4-La coating, offering greater specific surface area, more active spots, higher current response, and longer lifespan for the degradation of rhodamine B. The lifespan of the Ti/TiO2-NTs/SnO2-Sb2O4-La electrode reached 200 min (1000 mA cm-2, 1 M H2SO4), while the actual service life was up to 3699 h. Under the conditions of initial pH 3.0, Na2SO4 concentration of 0.1 M, current density of 30 mA cm-2, and initial rhodamine B concentration of 20 mg L-1, the color and TOC removal rate of rhodamine B reached 100% and 86.13% within 15 and 30 min, respectively. Rhodamine B was decomposed into acids, esters, and other molecular compounds under the action of •OH and SO4•- free radicals and electrocatalysis, and finally completely mineralized into CO2 and H2O. It is anticipated that this work will yield a novel research concept for producing DSA electrodes with superior catalytic efficacy and elevated stability.

Degradation of dissolved sulfide in water using multi-hole dielectric barrier discharge

Biogas obtained from livestock manure is used as fuel for solid oxide fuel cells. Although H2S is a typical biogas, it is a fatal disadvantage for fuel-cell power generation and, thus, must be removed. In this study, we proposed an effective method for sulfide removal from water using a multi-hole dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) system. In this system, active species, such as ozone, ultraviolet rays, hydroxyl radicals, and hydrogen peroxide, were simultaneously generated. Under optimal conditions, dissolved sulfide (initial concentration: 120 mg/L) was completely degraded within 10 min in air plasma and 6 min in oxygen plasma. Changes in the physical properties of the sulfide-treated water were confirmed by measuring the pH, oxidation-reduction potential, and dissolved oxygen. Results of the by-product analysis showed that sulfide was converted into sulfate by reacting with a large amount of ozone, and the active species were emitted from the multi-hole DBD system. In summary, multi-hole DBD technology has demonstrated merit as a water-contaminant purification technology and for the removal of dissolved sulfide.

Integrated system of electro-catalytic oxidation and microbial fuel cells for the treatment of recalcitrant wastewater

The emission of recalcitrant wastewater poses serious threats to the environment. In this study, an integrated approach combining electrocatalytic oxidation (EC) for pretreatment and microbial fuel cells (MFC) for thorough pollutant degradation is proposed to ensure efficient degradation of target substances, with low energy input and enhanced bioavailability of refractory organics. When phenol was used as the pollutant, an initial concentration of 2000 mg/L phenol solution underwent EC treatment under constant current-exponential attenuation power supply mode, resulting in a COD removal rate of 54.53%, and a phenol degradation rate of 99.83%. Intermediate products such as hydroquinone and para-diphenol were detected in the solution. After subsequent MFC treatment, only minor amounts of para-diphenol were left, and the degradation rate of phenol and its intermediate products reached 100%, with an output power density of 110.4 mW m-2. When coal chemical wastewater was used as the pollutant, further examination of the EC-MFC system performance showed a COD removal rate of 49.23% in the EC section, and a 76.21% COD removal rate in the MFC section, with an output power density of 181.5 mW m-2. Microbiological analysis revealed typical electrogenic bacteria (such as Pseudomonas and Geobacter), and specific degrading functional bacteria (such as Stenotrophomonas, Delftia, and Brevundimonas). The dominant microbial communities and their proportions adapted to environmental changes in response to the variation of carbon sources.

What is the role of nitrate/nitrite in trace organic contaminants degradation and transformation during UV-based advanced oxidation processes?

The effectiveness of UV-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs) in degrading trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) can be significantly influenced by the ubiquitous presence of nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) in water and wastewater. Indeed, NO3-/NO2- can play multiple roles of NO3-/NO2- in UV-AOPs, leading to complexities and conflicting results observed in existing research. They can inhibit the degradation of TrOCs by scavenging reactive species and/or competitively absorbing UV light. Conversely, they can also enhance the elimination of TrOCs by generating additional •OH and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). Furthermore, the presence of NO3-/NO2- during UV-AOP treatment can affect the transformation pathways of TrOCs, potentially resulting in the nitration/nitrosation of TrOCs. The resulting nitro(so)-products are generally more toxic than the parent TrOCs and may become precursors of nitrogenous disinfection byproducts (N-DBPs) upon chlorination. Particularly, since the impact of NO3-/NO2- in UV-AOPs is largely due to the generation of RNS from NO3-/NO2- including NO•, NO2•, and peroxynitrite (ONOO-/ONOOH), this review covers the generation, properties, and detection methods of these RNS. From kinetic, mechanistic, and toxicologic perspectives, future research needs are proposed to advance the understanding of how NO3-/NO2- can be exploited to improve the performance of UV-AOPs treating TrOCs. This critical review provides a comprehensive framework outlining the multifaceted impact of NO3-/NO2- in UV-AOPs, contributing insights for basic research and practical applications of UV-AOPs containing NO3-/NO2-.

Effective oxidation decomplexation of Cu-EDTA and Cu2+ electrodeposition from PCB manufacturing wastewater by persulfate-based electrochemical oxidation: Performance and mechanisms

Complex wastewater matrices such as printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing wastewater present a major environmental concern. In this work, simultaneous decomplexation of metal complex Cu-EDTA and reduction/electrodeposition of Cu2+ was conducted in a persulfate-based electrochemical oxidation system. Oxidizing/reductive species were simultaneously produced in this system, which realized 99.8% of Cu-EDTA decomplexation, 94.5% of Cu2+ reduction/electrodeposition under the conditions of original solution pH = 3.2, electrode distance = 3 cm, [Na2S2O8]0 = 5 mM, current density = 12 mA/cm2, and reaction time = 180 min. The total treatment cost is as low as 0.80 USD/mol Cu-EDTA. Effective mineralization (74.1% total organic carbon removal) of the solution was obtained after 3 h of treatment. •OH and SO4•- drove the Cu-EDTA decomplexation, destroying the chelating sites and finally it was effectively mineralized to CO2, H2O and Cu2+. The mechanisms of copper electrodeposition on the stainless steel cathode and persulfate activation by the BDD anode were proposed based on the electrochemical measurements. The electrodes exhibited excellent reusability and low metal (total iron and Ni2+) leaching during 20 cycles of application. This study provide an effective and sustainable method for the application of the electro-persulfate process in treating complex wastewater matrices.

Natural magnetite as an effective and long-lasting catalyst for CWPO of azole pesticides in a continuous up-flow fixed-bed reactor

The global occurrence of micropollutants in water bodies has raised concerns about potential negative effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. EU regulations to mitigate such widespread pollution have already been implemented and are expected to become increasingly stringent in the next few years. Catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) has proved to be a promising alternative for micropollutant removal from water, but most studies were performed in batch mode, often involving complex, expensive, and hardly recoverable catalysts, that are prone to deactivation. This work aims to demonstrate the feasibility of a fixed-bed reactor (FBR) packed with natural magnetite powder for the removal of a representative mixture of azole pesticides, recently listed in the EU Watch Lists. The performance of the system was evaluated by analyzing the impact of H2O2 dose (3.6-13.4 mg L-1), magnetite load (2-8 g), inlet flow rate (0.25-1 mL min-1), and initial micropollutant concentration (100-1000 µg L-1) over 300 h of continuous operation. Azole pesticide conversion values above 80% were achieved under selected operating conditions (WFe3O4 = 8 g, [H2O2]0 = 6.7 mg L-1, flow rate = 0.5 mL min-1, pH0 = 5, T = 25 °C). Notably, the catalytic system showed a high stability upon 500 h in operation, with limited iron leaching (< 0.1 mg L-1). As a proof of concept, the feasibility of the system was confirmed using a real wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent spiked with the mixture of azole pesticides. These results represent a clear advance for the application of CWPO as a tertiary treatment in WWTPs and open the door for the scale-up of FBR packed with natural magnetite.

Peracetic acid activated by nickel cobaltite as effective oxidizing agent for BPA and its analogues degradation

The presented research concerns the use of nickel cobaltite nanoparticles (NiCo2O4 NPs) for the heterogeneous activation of peracetic acid and application of NiCo2O4-PAA system for degradation 10 organic micropollutants from the group of bisphenols. The bisphenols removal (initial concentration 1 μM) process was optimized by selecting the appropriate process conditions. The optimal amount of catalyst (115 mg/L), peracetic acid (PAA) concentration (7 mM) and pH (7) were determined using response surface analysis in the Design of Experiment. Then, NiCo2O4 NPs were used to check the possibility of reuse in subsequent oxidation cycles. The work also attempts to explain the mechanism of oxidation of the studied micropollutants. The participation of the sorption process on the catalyst was excluded and based on the experiments with radical scavengers it can be concluded that the oxidation proceeds in a radical pathway, mainly with participation of O2•- radicals. Experiments conducted in real water matrices exhibit low impact on degradation efficiency. Toxicity tests with green alga Acutodesmus obliquus and aquatic plant Lemna minor showed that post-reaction mixture influenced growth and the content of photosynthetic pigments in concentration dependent manner.

Sonocatalytic degradation of Bisphenol A from aquatic matrices over Pd/CeO2 nanoparticles: Kinetics study, transformation products, and toxicity

In this work, different ratios of palladium - cerium oxide (Pd/CeO2) catalyst were synthesized and characterized, while their sonocatalytic activity was evaluated for the degradation of the xenobiotic Bisphenol A (BPA) from aqueous solutions. Sonocatalytic activity expressed as BPA decomposition exhibited a volcano-type behavior in relation to the Pd loading, and the 0.25Pd/CeO2 catalyst characterized by the maximum Pd dispersion and lower crystallite size demonstrated the higher activity. Using 500 mg/L of 0.25 % Pd/CeO2 increased the kinetic constant for BPA destruction by more than two times compared to sonolysis alone (20 kHz at 71 W/L). Meanwhile, the simultaneous use of ultrasound and a catalyst enhanced the efficiency by 50.1 % compared to the sum of the individual processes, resulting in 95 % BPA degradation in 60 min. The sonocatalytic degradation of BPA followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the apparent kinetic constant was increased with ultrasound power and catalyst loading, while the efficiency was decreased in bottled water and secondary effluent. From the experiments that were conducted using appropriate scavengers, it was revealed that the degradation mainly occurred on the bubble/liquid interface of the formed cavities, while the reactive species produced from the thermal or light excitation of the prepared semiconductor also participated in the reaction. Five first-stage and four late-stage transformation products were identified using UHPLC/TOF-MS, and a pathway for the sonocatalytic degradation of BPA was proposed. According to ECOSAR software prediction, most transformation by-products (TBPs) present lower ecotoxicity than the parent compound, although some remain toxic to the indicators chosen.

Cobalt doping amount determines dominant reactive species in peroxymonosulfate activation via porous carbon catalysts co-doped by cobalt and nitrogen

Switching the reaction routes in peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes have attracted much attention but remain challenging. Herein, a series of Co-N/C catalysts with different compositions and structures were prepared by using bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks based on ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 (xZn/Co-ZIFs). Results show that Co doping amount could mediate the transformation of the activation pathway of PMS over Co-N/C. When Co doping amount was less than 10%, the constructed xCo-N/C/PMS system (x ≤ 10%) was singlet oxygen-dominated reaction; however further increasing Co doping amount would lead to the generation and coexistence of sulfate radicals and high-valent cobalt, besides singlet oxygen. Furthermore, the nitrogen-coordinated Co (Co-NX) sites could serve as main catalytically active sites to generate singlet oxygen. While excess Co doping amount caused the formation of Co nanoparticles from which leached Co ions were responsible for the generation of sulfate radicals and high-valent cobalt. Compared to undoped N/C, Co doping could significantly enhance the catalytic performance. The 0.5% Co-N/C could achieve the optimum degradation (0.488 min-1) and mineralization abilities (78.4%) of sulfamethoxazole among the investigated Co-N/C catalysts, which was superior to most of previously reported catalysts. In addition, the application prospects of the two systems in different environmental scenarios (pH, inorganic anions and natural organic matter) were assessed and showed different degradation behaviors. This study provides a strategy to regulate the reactive species in PMS-based advanced oxidation process.

Reducing citrus effluent toxicity: Biological-electrochemical treatment with diamond anode

One challenge of the citrus industry is the treatment and disposal of its effluents due to their high toxicity, substantial organic load, and consequent resistance to conventional biotechnological processes. This study introduces a novel approach, using electrochemical oxidation with a boron-doped diamond anode to efficiently remove organic compounds from biodegraded pulp wash (treated using the fungus Pleurotus sajor-caju.) The findings reveal that employing a current density of 20 mA cm-2 achieves notable results, including a 44.1% reduction in color, a 70.0% decrease in chemical oxygen demand, an 88.0% reduction in turbidity, and an impressive 99.7% removal of total organic carbon (TOC) after 6 h of electrolysis. The energy consumption was estimated at 2.93 kWh g-1 of removed TOC. This sequential biological-electrochemical procedure not only significantly reduced the mortality rate (85%) of Danio rerio embryos but also reduced the incidence of morphologically altered parameters. Regarding acute toxicity (LC50) of the residue, the process demonstrated a mortality reduction of 6.97% for D. rerio and a 40.88% lethality decrease for Lactuca sativa seeds. The substantial reduction in toxicity and organic load observed in this study highlights the potential applicability of combined biological and electrochemical treatments for real agroindustrial residues or their effluents.

MXene-supported MIL-88A(Fe) as persulfate activator for removal of tetracycline

The poor conductivity, poor stability, and agglomeration of iron-based metal organic framework MIL-88A(Fe) limit its application as persulfate (PS) activator in water purification. Herein, MXene-supported MIL-88A(Fe) composites (M88A/MX) were synthesized to enhance its adsorption and catalytic capability for tetracycline (TC) removal. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize prepared materials, confirming the successful attachment of MIL-88A(Fe) to the surface of MXene. M88A/MX-0.2 composites, prepared with 0.2 g MXene addition, exhibit optimal degradation efficiency, reaching 98% under conditions of 0.2 g/L M88A/MX-0.2, 1.0 mM PS, 20 ppm TC, and pH 5. The degradation rate constants of M88A/MX-0.2 were 0.03217 min-1, which was much higher than that of MIL-88A(Fe) (0.00159 min-1) and MXene (0.00626 min-1). The removal effects of reaction parameters, such as dosage of M88A/MX-0.2 and PS; initial solution pH; and the presence of the common co-existing constituents (humic acid and the inorganic anions) were investigated in detail. Additionally, the reuse of M88A/MX-0.2 showed that the composites had good cycling stability by recurrent experiments. The results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments indicated that ·OH, ·SO4-, and ·O2- were involved in the M88A/MX-0.2/PS system where persulfate oxidation process was activated with prepared M88A/MX-0.2. In addition, the intermediates of photocatalytic degradation were determined by HPLC-MS, and the possible degradation pathways of the target molecules were inferred. This study offered a new avenue for sulfate-based degradation of Fe-based metal organic framework.

An insight into the role of experimental parameters in advanced oxidation process applied for pharmaceutical degradation

The advanced oxidation process (AOP) is an efficient method to treat recalcitrance pollutants such as pharmaceutical compounds. The essential physicochemical factors in AOP experiments significantly influence the efficiency, speed, cost, and safety of byproducts of the treatment process. In this review, we collected recent articles that investigated the elimination of pharmaceutical compounds by various AOP systems in a water medium, and then we provide an overview of AOP systems, the formation mechanisms of active radicals or reactive oxygen species (ROS), and their detection methods. Then, we discussed the role of the main physicochemical parameters (pH, chemical interference, temperature, catalyst, pollutant concentration, and oxidant concentration) in a critical way. We gained insight into the most frequent scenarios for the proper and improper physicochemical parameters for the degradation of pharmaceutical compounds. Also, we mentioned the main factors that restrict the application of AOP systems in a commercial way. We demonstrated that a proper adjustment of AOP experimental parameters resulted in promoting the treatment performance, decreasing the treatment cost and the treatment operation time, increasing the safeness of the system products, and improving the reaction stoichiometric efficiency. The outcomes of this review will be beneficial for future AOP applicants to improve the pharmaceutical compound treatment by providing a deeper understanding of the role of the parameters. In addition, the proper application of physicochemical parameters in AOP systems acts to track the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Photocatalyzed hydrodecarboxylation of fatty acids: a prospective method to produce drop-in biofuels

A direct and practical method for photocatalyzed hydrodecarboxylation of fatty acids is reported herein. The catalytic system consists of a commercially available acridinium salt as the photocatalyst and thiophenol as the Hydrogen Atom Transfer (HAT) co-catalyst. Results evidenced that Cn-1 alkanes were obtained in yields up to 77%. Furthermore, the protocol was employed for a complex mixture of fatty acids bio-derived from a real sample of licuri oil to obtain hydrocarbons in the range of C9-C17 with high selectivity and excellent conversion (>90%). This work provides a powerful strategy for producing drop-in biofuels under mild conditions. Finally, an energetic assessment of our proposed protocol (∼22.9 kW h) reveals the benefit of a sustainable production of renewable hydrocarbons.

A Comprehensive Review on Modification of Titanium Dioxide-Based Catalysts in Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water Treatment

It has become necessary to develop effective strategies to prevent and reduce water pollution as a result of the increase in dangerous pollutants in water reservoirs. Consequently, there is a need to design new catalyst materials to promote the efficiency of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in the field of wastewater treatment plant to ensure the mineralization of trace organic contaminants. A notable approach gaining attention involves the coupling of sulfate radicals-based AOPs to photocatalysis or electrocatalysis processes, aiming to achieve the complete removal of refractory contaminants into water and carbon dioxide. Titanium dioxide as metal oxide has received great attention for its catalytic application in water purification. TiO2 catalysts offer a multitude of advantages in AOPs. They are characterized by their high photocatalytic activity under both ultraviolet and visible light, making them environmentally friendly due to the absence of toxic byproducts during oxidation. Their versatility is remarkable, finding utility in various AOPs, from photocatalysis to photo-Fenton processes. TiO2's durability ensures long-lasting catalytic activity, which is crucial for continuous treatment processes, and their cost-effectiveness is particularly advantageous. Furthermore, their chemical stability allows it to withstand varying pH conditions. However, the large band gap energy and low electrical conductivity hinder the catalytic reaction effectiveness. This review aims to examine various approaches to enhance the catalytic performance of titanium dioxide, with the objective of enabling more efficient water purification methods.

Metal-Organic Frameworks Marry Sponge: New Opportunities for Advanced Water Treatment

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered attention across various fields due to their noteworthy features like high specific surface area, substantial porosity, and adjustable performance. In the realm of water treatment, MOFs exhibit great potential for eliminating pollutants such as organics, heavy metals, and oils. Nonetheless, the inherent powder characteristics of MOFs pose challenges in terms of recycling, pipeline blockage, and even secondary pollution in practical applications. Addressing these issues, the incorporation of MOFs into sponges proves to be an effective solution. Strategies like one-pot synthesis, in situ growth, and impregnation are commonly employed for loading MOFs onto sponges. This review comprehensively explores the synthesis strategies of MOFs and sponges, along with their applications in water treatment, aiming to contribute to the ongoing advancement of MOF materials.

Bimetallic Organic Gel for Effective Methyl Orange Dye Adsorption

A bimetallic organic gel (MOG-Fe/Al) was synthesized through the solvothermal method. The gel state of the product obtained under optimized gel formation conditions is sufficient to carry 2 g of weight for a long time. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) technique, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirmed the structures and morphologies of the synthesized materials. MOG-Fe/Al, with good stability, excellent durability, and wide applicability, exhibited efficient MO adsorption capacity as high as 335.88 mg/g at 25 °C. Adsorption-influencing factors including solution pH, contact time, and temperature were investigated. The adsorption performance of the bimetallic organic gel was better than that of the monometallic organic gels (MOG-Fe and MOG-Al), and its adsorption processes were in accordance with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isothermal models. The excellent adsorption capacity of the MOG-Fe/Al is due to its surface structure, pore volume, π-π interactions, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic interactions.

Mitigation of viruses of concern and bacteriophage surrogates via common unit processes for water reuse: A meta-analysis

Water reuse is a growing global reality. In regulating water reuse, viruses have come to the fore as key pathogens due to high shedding rates, low infectious doses, and resilience to traditional wastewater treatments. To demonstrate the high log reductions required by emerging water reuse regulations, cost and practicality necessitate surrogates for viruses for use as challenge organisms in unit process evaluation and monitoring. Bacteriophage surrogates that are mitigated to the same or lesser extent than viruses of concern are routinely used for individual unit process testing. However, the behavior of these surrogates over a multi-barrier treatment train typical of water reuse has not been well-established. Toward this aim, we performed a meta-analysis of log reductions of common bacteriophage surrogates for five treatment processes typical of water reuse treatment trains: advanced oxidation processes, chlorination, membrane filtration, ozonation, and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection. Robust linear regression was applied to identify a range of doses consistent with a given log reduction of bacteriophages and viruses of concern for each treatment process. The results were used to determine relative conservatism of surrogates. We found that no one bacteriophage was a representative or conservative surrogate for viruses of concern across all multi-barrier treatments (encompassing multiple mechanisms of virus mitigation). Rather, a suite of bacteriophage surrogates provides both a representative range of inactivation and information about the effectiveness of individual processes within a treatment train. Based on the abundance of available data and diversity of virus treatability using these five key water reuse treatment processes, bacteriophages MS2, phiX174, and Qbeta were recommended as a core suite of surrogates for virus challenge testing.

Infancy of peracetic acid activation by iron, a new Fenton-based process: A review

The exacerbated global water scarcity and stricter water directives are leading to an increment in the recycled water use, requiring the development of new cost-effective advanced water treatments to provide safe water to the population. In this sense, peracetic acid (PAA, CH3C(O)OOH) is an environmentally friendly disinfectant with the potential to challenge the dominance of chlorine in large wastewater treatment plants in the near future. PAA can be used as an alternative oxidant to H2O2 to carry out the Fenton reaction, and it has recently been proven as more effective than H2O2 towards emerging pollutants degradation at circumneutral pH values and in the presence of anions. PAA activation by homogeneous and heterogeneous iron-based materials generates - besides HO• and FeO2+ - more selective CH3C(O)O• and CH3C(O)OO• radicals, slightly scavenged by typical HO• quenchers (e.g., bicarbonates), which extends PAA use to complex water matrices. This is reflected in an exponential progress of iron-PAA publications during the last few years. Although some reviews of PAA general properties and uses in water treatment were recently published, there is no account on the research and environmental applications of PAA activation by Fe-based materials, in spite of its gratifying progress. In view of these statements, here we provide a holistic review of the types of iron-based PAA activation systems and analyse the diverse iron compounds employed to date (e.g., ferrous and ferric salts, ferrate(VI), spinel ferrites), the use of external ferric reducing/chelating agents (e.g., picolinic acid, l-cysteine, boron) and of UV-visible irradiation systems, analysing the mechanisms involved in each case. Comparison of PAA activation by iron vs. other transition metals (particularly cobalt) is also discussed. This work aims at providing a thorough understanding of the Fe/PAA-based processes, facilitating useful insights into its advantages and limitations, overlooked issues, and prospects, leading to its popularisation and know-how increment.

Revealing the synergistic effect between radical and non-radical species of sulfur-doped carbon nitride for ciprofloxacin removal: Based on density functional theory study

The distinct characteristics of active species produced during the photocatalytic reaction can result in alterations in the degradation routes of organic pollutants with diverse chemical structures. The relationship between the active species and degradation pathways of organic pollutants lacks a direct experimental or characterization method, so in-depth research is still needed to understand the details of their interactions. In this study, sulfur-doped bulk carbon nitride (SBCN) was prepared based on bulk carbon nitride (BCN), and the process of S-doping enhancing the production of O21 was revealed. Through the degradation experiment, the degradation rate of CIP by SBCN reached 91 %, which was higher than that of BCN (66 %). The increase of degradation rate was mainly attributed to the increase of O21. Through the density functional theory (DFT) calculation of CIP and its degradation intermediate, due to the preferential oxidation of CIP by O21, O21 changes the initial degradation direction of CIP, releasing more attack sites for ˙O2-, thereby achieving more efficient degradation of CIP through the synergy of O21 and ˙O2-. In this study, the attack preferences of the active species and their synergistic promotion provide important insights for the efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

Synthesis of stabilized zero-valent iron particles and role investigation of humic acid-Fex+ shell in Fenton-like reactions and surface stability control

Herein, a novel humic acid-Fex+ complex-coated ZVI (HA-Fex+@ZVI) was synthesized and used to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for phenol degradation. The HA-Fex+ shell selectively reacted with PDS rather than O2, leading to the formation of modified ZVI with excellent surface stability in storage and ultraefficient PDS activation in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). As a result, the phenol degradation and PDS activation efficiencies of HA-Fex+@ZVI/PDS were ∼14.4 and ∼1.8 times higher than those of ZVI/PDS, respectively. Mechanistic explorations revealed that the replacement of the HA-Fex+ shell relative to the original passivation layer of ZVI greatly changed the SO4•- generation pathway from a heterogeneous process to a homogeneous process, resulting from the slow exposure of Fe0 (generating dissolved Fe2+) and the depolymerized HA (enhancing the Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle). Based on experimental analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the Fe3+ in HA-Fex+ could be reduced to Fe2+ by PDS, resulting in the disintegration of the HA-Fex+ shell and exposure of Fe0 core active sites. Furthermore, compared to similar catalysts synthesized with commercial HA and traditional chemicals, HA-Fex+@ZVI synthesized with multiple waste biomasses exhibited better performance. This research provides valuable insights for designing ZVI-based catalysts with excellent storage stability and ultraefficient PDS catalytic activity for AOPs.
