Raman spectroscopy of graphene-based materials and its applications in related devices

Observation of reversible and irreversible charge transfer processes in dye-monolayer graphene systems using Raman spectroscopy as a tool

Herein, we report the Raman spectroscopy of crystal violet (CV) and IR-780 Iodide molecules dispersed on the monolayer graphene film (MGF). In the CV-MGF system, the enhancement in the Raman scattering of CV molecules is observed irrespective of the location probed during the spectral measurements. This enhancement is due to the charge transfer from the MGF to CV molecules. However, in the case of the IR-780 Iodide - MGF system, the enhancement of Raman scattering of dye molecules or MGF is observed strongly depending upon the probed location. These observations indicate that the charge transfer is irreversible and reversible in the CV-MGF and IR-780 Iodide-MGF systems, respectively. Importantly, for the first time, this experimental study revealed that enhancing the Raman scattering of MGF is possible through the "chemical mechanism" with suitable dye molecules apart from the "electromagnetic mechanism" with plasmonic hot spots of the metal nanoparticles and photonic nanojets of single dielectric microparticles.

Insights in Pt-based electrocatalysts on carbon supports for electro-oxidation of carbohydrates: an EIS-DEMS analysis

In this work, the electrochemical oxidation of carbohydrates (glucose, fructose, and sucrose) was induced at the interface of Pt-nanoparticles supported on different carbon-based materials as carbon vulcan (C) and carbon black (CB). It was found that the support plays an important role during carbohydrates electro-oxidation as demonstrated by electrochemical techniques. In this context, current-concentration profiles of the redox peaks show the behavior of the pathways at carbohydrates-based solutions. Herein, the trend of current measured was glucose > sucrose > fructose, attributed to differences in the organic functional groups and chain-structure. Raman, XRD, SEM-EDS and XPS put in clear important structural, morphological, and electronic differences linked with the intrinsic nature of the obtained material. Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectroscopy (DEMS) indicated that the selectivity and the conversion of the formed reaction products during oxidation is linked with the catalyst nature (distribution, particle size) and the interaction with the carbon-based support.

Toward the Production of Super Graphene

The quality requirements of graphene depend on the applications. Some have a high tolerance for graphene quality and even require some defects, while others require graphene as perfect as possible to achieve good performance. So far, synthesis of large-area graphene films by chemical vapor deposition of carbon precursors on metal substrates, especially on Cu, remains the main way to produce high-quality graphene, which has been significantly developed in the past 15 years. However, although many prototypes are demonstrated, their performance is still more or less far from the theoretical property limit of graphene. This review focuses on how to make super graphene, namely graphene with a perfect structure and free of contaminations. More specially, this study focuses on graphene synthesis on Cu substrates. Typical defects in graphene are first discussed together with the formation mechanisms and how they are characterized normally, followed with a brief review of graphene properties and the effects of defects. Then, the synthesis progress of super graphene from the aspects of substrate, grain size, wrinkles, contamination, adlayers, and point defects are reviewed. Graphene transfer is briefly discussed as well. Finally, the challenges to make super graphene are discussed and a strategy is proposed.

Prototyping a wearable and stretchable graphene-on-PDMS sensor for strain detection on human body physiological and joint movements

In the era of wearable electronic devices, which are quite popular nowadays, our research is focused on flexible as well as stretchable strain sensors, which are gaining humongous popularity because of recent advances in nanocomposites and their microstructures. Sensors that are stretchable and flexible based on graphene can be a prospective 'gateway' over the considerable biomedical speciality. The scientific community still faces a great problem in developing versatile and user-friendly graphene-based wearable strain sensors that satisfy the prerequisites of susceptible, ample range of sensing, and recoverable structural deformations. In this paper, we report the fabrication, development, detailed experimental analysis and electronic interfacing of a robust but simple PDMS/graphene/PDMS (PGP) multilayer strain sensor by drop casting conductive graphene ink as the sensing material onto a PDMS substrate. Electrochemical exfoliation of graphite leads to the production of abundant, fast and economical graphene. The PGP sensor selective to strain has a broad strain range of ⁓60%, with a maximum gauge factor of 850, detection of human physiological motion and personalized health monitoring, and the versatility to detect stretching with great sensitivity, recovery and repeatability. Additionally, recoverable structural deformation is demonstrated by the PGP strain sensors, and the sensor response is quite rapid for various ranges of frequency disturbances. The structural designation of graphene's overlap and crack structure is responsible for the resistance variations that give rise to the remarkable strain detection properties of this sensor. The comprehensive detection of resistance change resulting from different human body joints and physiological movements demonstrates that the PGP strain sensor is an effective choice for advanced biomedical and therapeutic electronic device utility.

Hard Carbon Derived From Different Precursors for Sodium Storage

Due to the almost unlimited resource and acceptable performance, Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have been regarded as a promising alternative for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for grid-scale energy storage. As the key material of SIBs, hard carbon (HC) plays a decisive role in determining the batteries' performance. Nevertheless, the micro-structure of HCs is quite complex and the random organization of turbostratically stacked graphene layers, closed pores, and defects make the structure-performance relationship insufficiently revealed. On the other hand, the impending large-scale deployment of SIBs leads to producing HCs with low-cost and abundant precursors actively pursued. In this work, the recent progress of preparing HCs from different precursors including biomass, polymers, and fossil fuels is summarized with close attention to the influences of precursors on the structural evolution of HCs. After a brief introduction of the structural features of HCs, the recent understanding of the structure-performance relationship of HCs for sodium storage is summarized. Then, the main focus is concentrated on the progress of producing HCs from distinct precursors. After that, the pros and cons of HCs derived from different precursors are comprehensively compared to conclude the selection rules of precursors. Finally, the further directions of HCs are deeply discussed to end this review.

Enhanced Photocatalytic H2 Generation by Light-Induced Carbon Modification of TiO2 Nanotubes

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the material of choice for photocatalytic and electrochemical applications owing to its outstanding physicochemical properties. However, its wide bandgap and relatively low conductivity limit its practical application. Modifying TiO2 with carbon species is a promising route to overcome these intrinsic complexities. In this work, we propose a facile method to modify TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) based on the remnant organic electrolyte retained inside the nanotubes after the anodization process, that is, without removing it by immersion in ethanol. Carbon-modified TiO2 NTs (C-TiO2 NTs) showed enhanced H2 evolution in photocatalysis under UV illumination in aqueous solutions. When the C-TiO2 NTs were subjected to UV light illumination, the carbon underwent modification, resulting in higher measured photocurrents in the tube layers. After UV illumination, the IPCE of the C-TiO2 NTs was 4.4-fold higher than that of the carbon-free TiO2 NTs.

Small Warriors of Nature: Novel Red Emissive Chlorophyllin Carbon Dots Harnessing Fenton-Fueled Ferroptosis for In Vitro and In Vivo Cancer Treatment

The appeal of carbon dots (CDs) has grown recently, due to their established biocompatibility, adjustable photoluminescence properties, and excellent water solubility. For the first time in the literature, copper chlorophyllin-based carbon dots (Chl-D CDs) are successfully synthesized. Chl-D CDs exhibit unique spectroscopic traits and are found to induce a Fenton-like reaction, augmenting photodynamic therapy (PDT) efficacies via ferroptotic and apoptotic pathways. To bolster the therapeutic impact of Chl-D CDs, a widely used cancer drug, temozolomide, is linked to their surface, yielding a synergistic effect with PDT and chemotherapy. Chl-D CDs' biocompatibility in immune cells and in vivo models showed great clinical potential.Proteomic analysis was conducted to understand Chl-D CDs' underlying cancer treatment mechanism. The study underscores the role of reactive oxygen species formation and pointed toward various oxidative stress modulators like aldolase A (ALDOA), aldolase C (ALDOC), aldehyde dehydrogenase 1B1 (ALDH1B1), transaldolase 1 (TALDO1), and transketolase (TKT), offering a deeper understanding of the Chl-D CDs' anticancer activity. Notably, the Chl-D CDs' capacity to trigger a Fenton-like reaction leads to enhanced PDT efficiencies through ferroptotic and apoptotic pathways. Hence, it is firmly believed that the inherent attributes of Chl-CDs can lead to a secure and efficient combined cancer therapy.

Unravelling the formation of carbyne nanocrystals from graphene nanoconstrictions through the hydrothermal treatment of agro-industrial waste molasses

The delicate synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanostructures from two-dimensional (2D) graphene moiré layers holds tremendous interest in materials science owing to its unique physiochemical properties exhibited during the formation of hybrid configurations with sp-sp2 hybridization. However, the controlled synthesis of such hybrid sp-sp2 configurations remains highly challenging. Therefore, we employed a simple hydrothermal technique using agro-industrial waste as the carbon source to synthesize 1D carbyne nanocrystals from the nanoconstricted zones of 2D graphene moiré layers. By employing suite of characterization techniques, we delineated the mechanism of carbyne nanocrystal formation, wherein the origin of carbyne nanochains was deciphered from graphene intermediates due to the presence of a hydrothermally cut nanoconstriction regime engendered over well-oriented graphene moiré patterns. The autogenous hydrothermal pressurization of agro-industrial waste under controlled conditions led to the generation of epoxy-rich graphene intermediates, which concomitantly gave rise to carbyne nanocrystal formation in oriented moiré layers with nanogaps. The unique growth of carbyne nanocrystals over a few layers of holey graphene exhibits excellent paramagnetic properties, the predominant localization of electrons and interfacial polarization effects. Further, we extended the application of the as-synthesized carbyne product (Cp) for real-time electrochemical-based toxic metal (As3+) sensing in groundwater samples (from riverbanks), which depicted superior sensitivity (0.22 mA μM-1) even at extremely lower concentrations (0.0001 μM), corroborating the impedance spectroscopy analysis.

Building a cm2scale CVD graphene-based gas sensor: modelling the kinetic with a three-site adsorption/desorption Langmuir model

In this article, we aim to develop and study a highly sensitive and selective cm2scale graphene-based gas sensor. We present the technology used to fabricate sensors which integrate monolayer chemical vapour deposition graphene: photolithography and transfer of layers. Characterization techniques (optical microscopy, AFM, micro-Raman spectroscopy, transport electrical measurements) ensure a diagnosis of graphene ribbons and allow good reproducibility of technological processes. We present the results of gas characterizations after a 200 ppm NO2exposure. We propose a novel approach for the modelling of the sensor response with a three-site adsorption/desorption Langmuir model. This innovative way of modelling the sensor response should provide a better understanding of the sensor's kinetic and help to overcome the long response time observed with graphene gas sensors.

Self-Powered Biomimetic Pressure Sensor Based on Mn-Ag Electrochemical Reaction for Monitoring Rehabilitation Training of Athletes

Self-powered pressure detection using smart wearable devices is the subject of intense research attention, which is intended to address the critical need for prolonged and uninterrupted operations. Current piezoelectric and triboelectric sensors well respond to dynamic stimuli while overlooking static stimuli. This study proposes a dual-response potentiometric pressure sensor that responds to both dynamic and static stimuli. The proposed sensor utilizes interdigital electrodes with MnO2/carbon/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the cathode and conductive silver paste as the anode. The electrolyte layer incorporates a mixed hydrogel of PVA and phosphoric acid. The optimized interdigital electrodes and sandpaper-like microstructured surface of the hydrogel electrolyte contribute to enhanced performance by facilitating an increased contact area between the electrolyte and electrodes. The sensor features an open-circuit voltage of 0.927 V, a short-circuit current of 6 µA, a higher sensitivity of 14 mV/kPa, and outstanding cycling performance (>5000 cycles). It can accurately recognize letter writing and enable capacitor charging and LED lighting. Additionally, a data acquisition and display system employing the proposed sensor, which facilitates the monitoring of athletes' rehabilitation training, and machine learning algorithms that effectively guide rehabilitation actions are presented. This study offers novel solutions for the future development of smart wearable devices.

Covalent functionalization of 1D and 2D sp2-carbon nanoallotropes - twelve years of progress (2011-2023)

Carbon nanoallotropes have attracted significant attention in the field of materials science due to their unique combination of physicochemical and biological properties, with numerous applications. One-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) sp2-carbon nanoallotropes, such as carbon nanohorns (CNHs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and graphene, have emerged as prominent candidates for a variety of technological advancements. To fully exploit their exceptional characteristics, the covalent functionalization of these nanostructures may alleviate the problems with the processing and final performance. This route of the carbon nanoallotrope functionalization is based on a covalent attachment of functional groups or molecules (via linkers of various strengths) to their surfaces, enabling precise control over physical, chemical, biological, and electronic properties. Such an approach opens up new avenues for tailoring the nanoallotrope characteristics, such as solubility/dispersibility, reactivity, and interactions with other materials. Over more than the last decade, significant progress has been made in the covalent functionalization of both 1D and 2D sp2-carbon nanoallotropes, paving the way for diverse applications in the nanoelectronics, energy storage, sensing, and biomedical fields. In this comprehensive review, we provide state-of-the-art advancements and achievements in the covalent functionalization of 1D and 2D sp2-carbon nanoallotropes during the past dozen years. We aim to highlight the key strategies, methodologies, and breakthroughs that have significantly contributed to this field. Eventually, we discuss the implications of those advancements and explore the opportunities for future research and applications.

A novel heterogeneous biocatalyst based on graphene oxide for synthesis of pyran derivatives

Graphene oxide modified with tryptophan (GO-Trp) has been introduced as a new heterogeneous acid-base biocatalyst for synthesis of some pyran derivatives. GO was prepared according to the Hummer's method and tryptophan as a low-cost green amino acid is covalently bonded to the surface of GO without any organic or toxic reagents in a green way. The new catalyst was characterized by different spectroscopic methods such as Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction (XRD), etc. …. The results of XRD patterns showed an increase in the distance between the GO plates in the presence of the modifying agent which specifies the presence of amino acid between the GO layers. XPS analysis also confirmed successful modification through the presence of C-N bonds in the structure of the catalyst. In addition, improvements in thermal stability and changes in the morphology of the samples were observed using thermogravimetric analysis and Field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis respectively. Evaluation of the catalyst performance in the synthesis of some benzo[b]pyran and pyrano[3,2-c] chromene derivatives showed presentable results. Seven benzo[b]pyran (4a-4g) and five pyrano[3,2-c] chromene (4h-4l) derivatives were synthesized. GO-Trp as a safe, natural and efficient catalyst, could be reused up to 5 runs for synthesis of pyran derivatives without any significant decrease in its potency. High purity of the products and desirable yields are other points that make the present work more attractive.

Waste Coffee Ground-Derived Porous Carbon for Neurochemical Detection

We present an optimized synthetic method for repurposing coffee waste to create controllable, uniform porous carbon frameworks for biosensor applications to enhance neurotransmitter detection with fast-scan cyclic voltammetry. Harnessing porous carbon structures from biowastes is a common practice for low-cost energy storage applications; however, repurposing biowastes for biosensing applications has not been explored. Waste coffee ground-derived porous carbon was synthesized by chemical activation to form multivoid, hierarchical porous carbon, and this synthesis was specifically optimized for porous uniformity and electrochemical detection. These materials, when modified on carbon-fiber microelectrodes, exhibited high surface roughness and pore distribution, which contributed to significant improvements in electrochemical reversibility and oxidative current for dopamine (3.5 ± 0.4-fold) and other neurochemicals. Capacitive current increases were small, showing evidence of small increases in electroactive surface area. Local trapping of dopamine within the pores led to improved electrochemical reversibility and frequency-independent behavior. Overall, we demonstrate an optimized biowaste-derived porous carbon synthesis for neurotransmitter detection for the first time and show material utility for viable neurotransmitter detection within a tissue matrix. This work supports the notion that controlled surface nanogeometries play a key role in electrochemical detection.

Hydrogen-Assisted Thermal Treatment of Electrode Materials for Electrochemical Double-Layer Capacitors

The capacitance of electrode materials used in electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) is currently limited by several factors, including inaccessible isolated micropores in high-surface area carbons, the finite density of states resulting in a quantum capacitance in series to Helmholtz double-layer capacitance, and the presence of surface impurities, such as functional groups and adsorbed species. To unlock the full potential of EDLC active materials and corresponding electrodes, several post-production treatments are commonly proposed to improve their capacitance and, thus, the energy density of the corresponding devices. In this work, we report a systematic study of the effect of a prototypical treatment, namely H2-assisted thermal treatment, on the chemical, structural, and thermal properties of activated carbon and corresponding electrodes. By combining multiple characterization techniques, we clarify the actual origins of the improvement of the performance (e.g., > +35% energy density for the investigated power densities in the 0.5-45 kW kg-1 range) of the EDLCs based on treated electrodes compared to the case based on the pristine electrodes. Contrary to previous works supporting a questionable graphitization of the activated carbon at temperatures <1000 °C, we found that a "surface graphitization" of the activated carbon, detected by spectroscopic analysis, is mainly associated with the desorption of surface contaminants. The elimination of surface impurities, including adsorbed species, improves the surface capacitance of the activated carbon (CsurfAC) by +37.1 and +36.3% at specific currents of 1 and 10 A g-1, respectively. Despite the presence of slight densification of the activated carbon upon the thermal treatment, the latter still improves the cell gravimetric capacitance normalized on the mass of the activated carbon only (CgAC), e.g., + 28% at 1 A g-1. Besides, our holistic approach identifies the change in the active material and binder contents as a concomitant cause of the increase of cell gravimetric capacitance (Cg), accounting for the mass of all of the electrode materials measured for treated electrodes compared to pristine ones. Overall, this study provides new insights into the relationship between the modifications of the electrode materials induced by H2-assisted thermal treatments and the performance of the resulting EDLCs.

Selective NO2 Gas Sensors Employing Nitrogen- and Boron-Doped and Codoped Reduced Graphene Oxide

In this paper, we develop high-performance gas sensors based on heteroatom-doped and -codoped graphene oxide as a sensing material for the detection of NO2 at trace levels. Graphene oxide (GO) was doped with nitrogen and boron by a chemical method using urea and boric acid as precursors. The prepared samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The obtained results proved the successful reduction of graphene oxide by doping effects, leading to the removal of some oxygen functional groups and restoration of an sp2 carbon structure. New bonds in honeycombs, such as pyridinic, pyrrolic, graphitic, B-C3, B-C2-O, and B-O, were created. Compared to the nondoped GO, the N/B-rGO materials exhibited enhanced responses toward low concentrations of NO2 (<1 ppm) at 100 °C. Particularly, the N-rGO-based device showed the highest sensitivity and lowest limit of detection.

Protonated C3N4 Nanosheets for Enhanced Energy Storage in Symmetric Supercapacitors through Hydrochloric Acid Treatment

Next-generation electrochemical energy storage materials are essential in delivering high power for long periods of time. Double-layer carbonaceous materials provide high power density with low energy density due to surface-controlled adsorption. This limitation can be overcome by developing a low-cost, more abundant material that delivers high energy and power density. Herein, we develop layered C3N4 as a sustainable charge storage material for supercapacitor applications. It was thermally polymerized using urea and then protonated with various acids to enhance its charge storage contribution by activating more reaction sites through the exfoliation of the C-N framework. The increased electron-rich nitrogen moieties in the C-N framework material lead to better electrolytic ion impregnation into the electrode, resulting in a 7-fold increase in charge storage compared to the pristine material and other acids. It was found that C3N4 treated with hydrochloric acid showed a very high capacitance of 761 F g-1 at a current density of 20 A g-1 and maintained 100% cyclic retention over 10,000 cycles in a three-electrode configuration, outperforming both the pristine material and other acids. A symmetric device was fabricated using a KOH/LiI gel-based electrolyte, exhibiting a maximum specific capacitance of 175 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1. Additionally, the device showed remarkable power and energy density, reaching 600 W kg-1 and 35 Wh kg-1, with an exceptional cyclic stability of 60% even after 5000 cycles. This study provides an archetype to understand the underlying mechanism of acid protonation and paves the way to a metal-carbon-free environment.

Titania/graphene nanocomposites from scalable gas-phase synthesis for high-capacity and high-stability sodium-ion battery anodes

In sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), TiO2or sodium titanates are discussed as cost-effective anode material. The use of ultrafine TiO2particles overcomes the effect of intrinsically low electronic and ionic conductivity that otherwise limits the electrochemical performance and thus its Na-ion storage capacity. Especially, TiO2nanoparticles integrated in a highly conductive, large surface-area, and stable graphene matrix can achieve an exceptional electrochemical rate performance, durability, and increase in capacity. We report the direct and scalable gas-phase synthesis of TiO2and graphene and their subsequent self-assembly to produce TiO2/graphene nanocomposites (TiO2/Gr). Transmission electron microscopy shows that the TiO2nanoparticles are uniformly distributed on the surface of the graphene nanosheets. TiO2/Gr nanocomposites with graphene loadings of 20 and 30 wt% were tested as anode in SIBs. With the outstanding electronic conductivity enhancement and a synergistic Na-ion storage effect at the interface of TiO2nanoparticles and graphene, nanocomposites with 30 wt% graphene exhibited particularly good electrochemical performance with a reversible capacity of 281 mAh g-1at 0.1 C, compared to pristine TiO2nanoparticles (155 mAh g-1). Moreover, the composite showed excellent high-rate performance of 158 mAh g-1at 20 C and a reversible capacity of 154 mAh g-1after 500 cycles at 10 C. Cyclic voltammetry showed that the Na-ion storage is dominated by surface and TiO2/Gr interface processes rather than slow, diffusion-controlled intercalation, explaining its outstanding rate performance. The synthesis route of these high-performing nanocomposites provides a highly promising strategy for the scalable production of advanced nanomaterials for SIBs.

Electrocatalytic quantification of quinol in cosmetic samples using Co-doped graphitic carbon nitride @biomolecule assisted electrochemically reduced graphene nanosheets

A bio-nanocomposite "Co-doped-g-C3N4@ biomolecule assisted electrochemically reduced graphene nanosheets (Co-g-C3N4@GNbme)" was prepared by electrochemical exfoliation of GO from graphite anode in the presence of amino acid 'l-cysteine' followed by its association with Co-g-C3N4. The preparation of material has been confirmed by characterizations with FTIR, XRD, XPS and Raman spectroscopy. The morphology was investigated with TEM and SEM. Further, Co-g-C3N4@GNbme modified GC electrode was utilized for detecting and quantifying the 'Quinol' (a skin lightning agent) in cosmetic samples electrochemically. Quinol is a fundamental constituent utilized in various industries such as pharmaceuticals, oil refineries, textiles, and dyes. In the realm of cosmetics, it is utilized as a skin-lightning agent to inhibit the production of melanin in the skin. However, prolonged use of this component often results in allergic reactions among individuals. Furthermore, the effluents discharged from its manufacturing units pose a significant threat to the environment and human health due to its slow degradation. The detection limit was calculated to be 2.4 nM (S/N = 3).

Electrochemical Nitrate-to-Ammonia Conversion Enabled by Carbon-Decoration of Ni─GaOOH Synthesized via Plasma-Assisted CO2 Reduction

The release of nitrates into the environment leads to contaminated soil and water that poses a health risk to humans and animals. Due to the transition to renewable energy-based technologies, an electrochemical approach is an emerging option that can selectively produce valuable ammonia from nitrate sources. However, traditional metal-based electrocatalysts often suffer from low nitrate adsorption that reduces NH3  production rates. Here, a Ni-GaOOH-C/Ga electrocatalyst for electrochemical nitrate conversion into NH3 is synthesized via a low energy atmospheric-pressure plasma process that reduces CO2  into highly dispersed activated carbon on dispersed Ni─GaOOH particles produced from a liquid metal Ga─Ni alloy precursor. Nitrate conversion rates of up to 26.3 µg h-1  mg-1 cat  are achieved with good stability of up to 20 h. Critically, the presence of carbon centers is central to improved performance where both Ni─C and NiO─C interfaces act as NO3-  adsorption and reduction centers during the reaction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the NiO─C and Ni─C reaction sites reduce the Gibbs free energy required for NO3-  reduction to NH3  compared to NiO and Ni. Importantly, catalysts without carbon centers do not produce NH3 , emphasizing the unique effects of incorporating carbon nanoparticles into the electrocatalyst.

Resonance Raman spectroscopy of twisted interfaces in turbostratic multilayer graphene

Turbostratic multilayer graphene presents a unique system with a large number of twisted interfaces with variable twist angles. In this work, we have systematically studied the laser excitation energy dependence of the Raman modes of turbostratic graphene. The combination of 4 different laser energies is shown to be important to reveal the twist angles ranging from 5∘to 30∘present at the same lateral position of the sample. Rotational or R-modes and D-like modes are observed, which directly arise from additional momentum transfer from the potential of corresponding superlattices. Trends in their dispersion and intensity are discussed. The resonant window for laser excitation indicates lowered positions of the van Hove singularities. Furthermore, an anomalous broadening factor of 0.17-0.265 eV is estimated for the resonance window when compared to the literature on isolated twisted bilayer graphene. Interestingly, a weak dependence of the R-modes on the laser wavelength is also observed. Finally, the dispersion of the 2D modes is also presented.

Graphene-All-Around Cobalt Interconnect with a Back-End-of-Line Compatible Process

The graphene-all-around (GAA) structure has been verified to grow directly at 380 °C using hot-wire chemical vapor deposition, within the thermal budget of the back end of the line (BEOL). The cobalt (Co) interconnects with the GAA structure have demonstrated a 10.8% increase in current density, a 27% reduction in resistance, and a 36 times longer electromigration lifetime. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations have revealed the presence of bonding between carbon and Co, which makes the Co atom more stable to resist external forces. The ability of graphene to act as a diffusion barrier in the GAA structure was confirmed through time-dependent dielectric breakdown measurement. The Co interconnect within the GAA structure exhibits enhanced electrical properties and reliability, which indicates compatibility applications as next-generation interconnect materials in CMOS BEOL.

Detection of Perfluorooctanoic and Perfluorodecanoic Acids on a Graphene-Based Electrochemical Sensor Aided by Computational Simulations

Perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) exhibit high chemical and thermal stability, rendering them versatile for various applications. However, their notable toxicity poses environmental and human health concerns. Detecting trace amounts of these chemicals is crucial to mitigate risks. Electrochemical sensors surpass traditional methods in sensitivity, selectivity, and cost-effectiveness. In this study, a graphene nanosheet-based sensor was developed for detecting perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA). Using the Hummer method, graphene nanosheets were synthesized and characterized in terms of morphology, structural ordering, and surface topology. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations determined the molecular interaction of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) with the sensor material. The sensor exhibited high sensitivity (50.75 μA·μM-1·cm-2 for PFOA and 29.58 μA·μM-1·cm-2 for PFDA) and low detection limits (10.4 nM for PFOA and 16.6 nM for PFDA) within the electrode dynamic linearity range of 0.05-500.0 μM (PFOA) and 0.08-500.0 μM (PFDA). Under optimal conditions, the sensor demonstrated excellent selectivity and recovery in testing for PFOA and PFDA in environmental samples, including spiked soil, water, spoiled vegetables, and fruit samples.

Pure and Sc-doped diopside (CaMgSi2O6) vibrational spectra: modelling and experiments

We investigated the structure of pure and Sc-doped synthetic diopside (a monoclinic single-chain silicate nominally CaMgSi2O6); in Sc-doped diopside, Sc3+ substitutes Mg2+ in the structure and, to achieve charge balance, vacancies form at the expense of Ca2+. We compared the structure obtained from ab initio modelling techniques at the density functional theory (DFT) level with the structure solved by employing single crystal X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, we compared IR and Raman spectroscopy experiments with vibrational density of states (VDOS) calculated from the Fourier transform of the velocity autocorrelation function obtained using ab initio (DFT) molecular dynamics simulations. In this framework, we developed a computational tool to assign the vibrational mode associated with a specific frequency. This method consists of projecting velocities along a specific set of internal coordinates such as stretching or bending, in cases involving defects or vacancies, to calculate a partial VDOS (pVDOS) that takes into account only the vibrations associated with selected internal modes, aiding the interpretation of the total VDOS and the experimental spectra in a relevant way. The computed data were validated with the experiments and we observed that doping the diopside structure with Sc produces peak broadening and the occurrence of new peaks in the Raman spectra and that site vacancies are associated with the nearby Sc site. The present work constitutes an interesting starting point to exploit the calculated VDOS/pVDOS to characterize experimental vibrational spectra of complex systems containing local vacancies, substitutions or defects as the Sc-doped diopside.

Enhancing Interfacial Capacitance by Boron Doping in Vertically Porous Carbon Toward High-Performance AC Filtering Electrochemical Capacitors

Electrochemical capacitors (ECs) show great perspective in alternate current (AC) filtering once they simultaneously reach ultra-fast response and high capacitance density. Nevertheless, the structure-design criteria of the two key properties are often mutually incompatible in electrode construction. Herein, it is proposed that combining vertically oriented porous carbon with enhanced interfacial capacitance (Ci ) can efficiently solve this issue. Theoretically, the density function theory calculation shows that the Ci of a carbon electrode can be enhanced by boron doping due to the corresponding compact induced charge layer. Experimentally, the vertical-oriented boron-doped graphene nanowalls (BGNWs) electrodes, whose Ci is enhanced from 4.20 to 10.16 µF cm-2 upon boron doping, are prepared on a large scale (480 cm2 ) using a hot-filament chemical vapor deposition technique (HFCVD). Owing to the high Ci and vertically oriented porous structure, BGNWs-based EC has a high capacitance density of 996 µF cm-2 with a phase angle of - 79.4° at 120 Hz in aqueous electrolyte and a high energy density of 1953 µFV2  cm-2 in organic electrolyte. As a result, the EC is capable of smoothing 120 Hz ripples for 60 Hz AC filtering. These results provide enlightening insights on designing high-performance ECs for high-frequency applications.

Thermoelectrically Driven Dual-Mechanism Regulation on SERS and Application Potential for Rapid Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Viruses and Microplastics

Electric-induced surface-enhanced Raman scattering (E-SERS) has been widely studied for its flexible regulation of SERS after the substrate is prepared. However, the enhancement effect is not sufficiently high in the E-SERS technology reported thus far, and no suitable field of application exists. In this study, a highly sensitive thermoelectrically induced SERS substrate, Ag/graphene/ZnO (AGZ), was fabricated using ZnO nanoarrays (NRs), graphene, and Ag nanoparticles (NPs). Applying a temperature gradient to the ZnO NRs enhanced the SERS signals of the probe molecules by a factor of approximately 20. Theoretical and experimental results showed that the thermoelectric potential enables the simultaneous modulation of the Fermi energy level of graphene and the plasma resonance peak of Ag NPs, resulting in a double enhancement in terms of physical and chemical mechanisms. The AGZ substrate was then combined with a mask to create a wearable thermoelectrically enhanced SERS mask for collecting SARS-CoV-2 viruses and microplastics. Its SERS signal can be enhanced by the temperature gradient created between a body heat source (∼37 °C) and a cold environment. The suitability of this method for virus detection was also examined using a reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and SARS-CoV-2 virus antigen detection. This work offers new horizons for research of E-SERS, and its application potential for rapid detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and microplastics was also studied.

Automated statistical analysis of raman spectra of nanomaterials

Both at the academic and the industrial level, material scientists are exploring routes for mass production and functionalization of graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNT), carbon dots, 2D materials, and heterostructures of these. Proper application of the novel materials requires fast and thorough characterization of the samples. Raman spectroscopy stands out as a standard non-invasive technique capable of giving key information on the structure and electronic properties of nanomaterials, including the presence of defects, degree of functionalization, diameter (in the case of CNT), different polytypes, doping, etc. Here, we present a computational tool to automatically analyze the Raman spectral features of nanomaterials, which we illustrate with the example of CNT and graphene. The algorithm manages hundreds of spectra simultaneously and provides statistical information (distribution of Raman shifts, average values of shifts and relative intensities, standard deviations, correlation between different peaks, etc.) of the main spectral features defining the structure and electronic properties of the samples, as well as publication-ready graphical material.

N-Doped Carbon Nanonecklaces with Encapsulated BiOCl Nanoparticles as High-Rate Anodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries

The unique two-dimensional layered structure of BiOCl makes it highly promising for energy storage applications. In this study, we successfully synthesized BiOCl nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon nanonecklaces (BiOCl NPs/N-CNNs) using well-established electrospinning and solvothermal substitution. As an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, BiOCl NPs/N-CNNs exhibited enhanced rate performance, delivering a capacity of 220.2 mA h g-1 at 8 A g-1. Furthermore, it demonstrated remarkable long cycle stability, retaining a capacity of 200.5 mA h g-1 after 9000 cycles with a discharge rate of 8.0 A g-1. The superior electrochemical performance can be attributed to the stacked layered structure of BiOCl, facilitated by van der Waals force, as well as the ingenious nanonecklace structures. These structures not only provide fast ion diffusion pathways but also enhance electrolyte penetration and offer more active sites for Li+ insertion and extraction. Additionally, the nanonecklace structure prevents the aggregation of nanopolyhedra, promoting the complete reaction of BiOCl with Li+. Moreover, the unique nanopolyhedron structure alleviates the stress caused by the volume expansion of Bi nanoparticles during cycling and reduces the internal resistance of the electrode.

Multifunctional carbon dots originated from waste garlic peel for rapid sensing of heavy metals and fluorescent imaging of 2D and 3D spheroids cultured fibroblast cells

Here, we prepared sulfur and nitrogen self-doped carbon dots derived from garlic peel extract (GPSNCDs) using a hydrothermal method. The as-synthesized GPSNCDs were confirmed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The analytical techniques indicate that the resulting GPSNCDs exhibit distinct emissive carbon-core with functionalities (owing to various ligands in the GPSNCDs). These functionalities are responsible for excellent hydrophilic and optical properties, including excitation-dependent emission and anti-photobleaching. Fluorescence intensities of GPSNCDs were quenched in the existence of Mn2+ and Fe3+ ions. This indicates that the GPSNCDs were sensitive to Fe3+ and Mn2+ ions with a limited range from 5 to 50 µM and showed lower recognition at ∼0.75 and 0.95 µM, respectively. In addition, the sensing results were generated in a short time (20 s). The cytotoxicity of GPSNCDs was tested to demonstrate that they are sufficiently safe to use for cellular imaging. The novel fluorescent GPSNCDs-based sensor can be used as a high-performance sensor for environmental monitoring. Further, GPSNCDs showed greater biocompatibility with normal fibroblast cells, and In Vitro fluorescent imaging of GPSNCDs revealed strong fluorescence signals in the two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) spheroids cultured fibroblast cells. The properties mentioned above demonstrate that the GPSNCDs can be applied to imaging normal cells without further modifications.

Activating two-dimensional semiconductors for photocatalysis: a cross-dimensional strategy

The emerging two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors substantially extend materials bases for versatile applications such as semiconductor photocatalysis demanding semiconductive matrices and large surface areas. The dimensionality, while endowing 2D semiconductors the unique properties to host photocatalytic functionality of pollutant removal and hydrogen evolution, hurdles the activation paths to form heterogenous photocatalysts where the photochemical processes are normally superior over these on the mono-compositional counterparts. In this perspective, we present a cross-dimensional strategy to employ thenD (n= 0-2) clusters or nanomaterials as activation partners to boost the photocatalytic activities of the 2D semiconductors. The formation principles of heterogenous photocatalysts are illustrated specifically for the 2D matrices, followed by selection criteria of them among the vast 2D database. The computer investigations are illustrated in the density functional theory route and machine learning benefitted from the vast samples in the 2D library. Synthetic realizations and characterizations of the 2D heterogenous systems are introduced with an emphasis on chemical methods and advanced techniques to understand materials and mechanistic studies. The perspective outlooks cross-dimensional activation strategies of the 2D materials for other applications such as CO2removal, and materials matrices in other dimensions which may inspire incoming research within these fields.

Towards routine organic structure determination using Raman microscopy

Raman microscopy can reveal a compound-specific vibrational "fingerprint" from micrograms of material with no sample preparation. We expect this increasingly available instrumentation to routinely assist synthetic chemists in structure determination; however, interpreting the information-dense spectra can be challenging for unreported compounds. Appropriate theoretical calculations using the highly efficient r2SCAN-3c method can accurately predict peak positions but are less precise in matching peak heights. To limit incorrect biases while comparing experimental and theoretical spectra, we introduce a user-friendly software that gives a match score to assist with structure determination. The capabilities and limitations of this approach are demonstrated for several proof-of-concept examples including the characterization of intermediates in the total synthesis of deoxyaspidodispermine.

Visualizing Ribbon-to-Ribbon Heterogeneity of Chemically Unzipped Wide Graphene Nanoribbons by Silver Nanowire-Based Tip-Enhanced Raman Scattering Microscopy

Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), a quasi-one-dimensional form of graphene, have gained tremendous attention due to their potential for next-generation nanoelectronic devices. The chemical unzipping of carbon nanotubes is one of the attractive fabrication methods to obtain single-layered GNRs (sGNRs) with simple and large-scale production.  The authors recently found that unzipping from double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs), rather than single- or multi-walled, results in high-yield production of crystalline sGNRs. However, details of the resultant GNR structure, as well as the reaction mechanism, are not fully understood due to the necessity of nanoscale spectroscopy. In this regard, silver nanowire-based tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) is applied for single GNR analysis and investigated ribbon-to-ribbon heterogeneity in terms of defect density and edge structure generated through the unzipping process.  The authors found that sGNRs originated from the inner walls of DWNTs showed lower defect densities than those from the outer walls. Furthermore, TERS spectra of sGNRs exhibit a large variety in graphitic Raman parameters, indicating a large variation in edge structures. This work at the single GNR level reveals, for the first time, ribbon-to-ribbon heterogeneity that can never be observed by diffraction-limited techniques and provides deeper insights into unzipped GNR structure as well as the DWNT unzipping reaction mechanism.

Single-atom Fe nanozymes with excellent oxidase-like and laccase-like activity for colorimetric detection of ascorbic acid and hydroquinone

Although traditional Fe-based nanozymes have shown great potential, generally only a small proportion of the Fe atoms on the catalyst's surface are used. Herein, we synthesized single-atom Fe on N-doped graphene nanosheets (Fe-CNG) with high atom utilization efficiency and a unique coordination structure. Active oxygen species including superoxide radicals (O2•-) and singlet oxygen (1O2) were efficiently generated from the interaction of the Fe-CNG with dissolved oxygen in acidic conditions. The Fe-CNG nanozymes were found to display enhanced oxidase-like and laccase-like activity, with Vmax of 2.07 × 10-7 M∙S-1 and 4.54 × 10-8 M∙S-1 and Km of 0.324 mM and 0.082 mM, respectively, which is mainly due to Fe active centers coordinating with O and N atoms simultaneously. The oxidase-like performance of the Fe-CNG can be effectively inhibited by ascorbic acid (AA) or hydroquinone (HQ), which can directly obstruct the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). Therefore, a direct and sensitive colorimetric method for the detection of AA and HQ activity was established, which exhibited good linear detection and limit of detection (LOD) of 0.048 μM and 0.025 μM, respectively. Moreover, a colorimetric method based on the Fe-CNG catalyst was fabricated for detecting the concentration of AA in vitamin C. Therefore, this work offers a new method for preparing a single-atom catalyst (SAC) nanozyme and a promising strategy for detecting AA and HQ.

Reduced Graphene Oxide/Organic Dye Composites for Bioelectroconversion of Saccharides: Application for Detection of Saccharides and α-Amylase Assessments

In this study, PQQ-dependent glucose dehydrogenase (PQQ-GDH) was immobilized onto reduced graphene oxide (rGO) modified with organic dyes from three different classes (acridine, arylmethane, and diazo); namely, neutral red (NR), malachite green (MG), and congo red (CR) formed three types of biosensors. All three rGO/organic dye composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The impact of three rGO/organic dye modifications employed in bioelectrocatalytic systems on changes in enzyme activity and substrate selectivity was investigated. The highest sensitivity of 39 µA/cm2 was obtained for 1 mM of glucose when a rGO_MG/PQQ-GDH biosensor was used. A significant improvement in the electrochemical response of biosensors was attributed to the higher amount of pyrrolic nitrogen groups on the surface of the rGO/organic dye composites. Modifications of rGO by NR and MG not only improved the surfaces for efficient direct electron transfer (DET) but also influenced the enzyme selectivity through proper binding and orientation of the enzyme. The accuracy of the biosensor's action was confirmed by the spectrophotometric analysis. Perspectives for using the proposed bioelectrocatalytic systems operating on DET principles for total or single monosaccharide and/or disaccharide determination/bioconversion systems or for diagnoses have been presented through examples of bioconversion of D-glucose, D-xylose, and maltose.

Facile synthesis of S, N-co-doped carbon dots for bio-imaging, Fe3+ detection and DFT calculation

Turning waste into wealth, herein, two highly fluorescent N and S co-doped carbon dots (N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B) were synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction of contaminant reactive red 2 (RR2) and L-cysteine or L-methionine, respectively. The detailed morphology and structure of N, S-CDs were characterized by XRD, Raman spectrum, FTIR spectra, TEM, HRTEM, AFM and XPS. The maximum fluorescent of N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B are 565 and 615 nm under different excitation wavelengths with moderate fluorescence intensity of 14.0 % and 6.3 %, respectively. The microstructure models of N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B, which were induced by FT-IR, XPS and element analysis, had been applied in DFT calculation. The result indicated that the doping of S and N is beneficial to obtain the red-shift of fluorescent spectra. Both N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B showed highly sensitive and selective to Fe3+. N, S-CDs-A can also detect Al3+ ion with high sensitivity and selectivity. Finally, N, S-CDs-B was successfully applied in cell imaging.

Ternary Heterostructure Membranes with Two-Dimensional Tunable Channels for Highly Selective Ion Separation

Selective ion separation from brines is pivotal for attaining high-purity lithium, a critical nonrenewable resource. Conventional methods encounter substantial challenges, driving the quest for streamlined, efficient, and swift approaches. Here, we present a graphene oxide (GO)-based ternary heterostructure membrane with a unique design. By utilizing Zn2+-induced confinement synthesis in a two-dimensional (2D) space, we incorporated two-dimensional zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and zinc alginate (ZA) polymers precisely within layers of the GO membrane, creating tunable interlayer channels with a ternary heterostructure. The pivotal design lies in ion insertion into the two-dimensional (2D) membrane layers, achieving meticulous modulation of layer spacing based on ion hydration radius. Notably, the ensuing layer spacing within the hybrid ionic intercalation membrane occupies an intermediary realm, positioned astutely between small-sized hydrated ionic intercalation membrane spacing and their more extensive counterparts. This deliberate configuration accelerates the swift passage of diminutive hydrated ions while simultaneously impeding the movement of bulkier ions within the brine medium. The outcome is remarkable selectivity, demonstrated by the partitioning of K+/Li+ = 20.9, Na+/K+ = 31.2, and Li+/Mg2+ = 9.5 ion pairs. The ZIF-8/GO heterostructure significantly contributes to the selectivity, while the mechanical robustness and stability, improved by the ZA/GO heterostructure, further support its practical applicability. This report reports an advanced membrane design, offering promising prospects for lithium extraction and various ion separation processes.

Tunable Optical Display of Multilayer Graphene through Lithium Intercalation

The tunable optical display is vital for many application fields in telecommunications, sensors, and military devices. However, most optical materials have a strong wavelength dependence, which limits their spectral operation range. In this work, we develop an electrically reconfigurable optical medium based on graphene, demonstrating a cycle-controlled display covering the electromagnetic spectrum from the visible to the infrared wavelength. Through an electro-intercalation method, the graphene-based surface enables rich colors from gray to dark blue to dark red to yellow, and the response time is about 1 min from the start gray color to the final yellow color. Simultaneously, it exhibits a remarkable change in infrared emissivity (from 0.63 to 0.80 reduction to 0.20) with a response time of 1 s. This modification of optical properties of lithiated multilayer graphene (MLG) is the increase of Fermi energy (Ef) due to the charge transfer from lithium (Li) to graphene layers, which causes changes in interband and intraband electronic transitions. Our findings imply potential value in fabricating multispectral optical materials with high tunability.

Orange-peel derived carbon-loaded low content ruthenium nanoparticles as ultra-high performance alkaline water HER electrocatalysts

Carbon materials have a very wide range of applications in the field of electrocatalysis, both as catalyst bodies and as excellent supports for catalysts. In this work, we obtained a graphitic-like orange-peel derived carbon (OPC) material through pre-carbonization and KOH activation strategies using discarded orange-peel as a raw material. OPC has good graphitization characteristics and a few-layer structure, making it very suitable as a support for nanoparticle catalysts. In order to compare the performance of OPC, we used commercial graphene as the benchmark, made two carbon materials uniformly loaded with ruthenium nanoparticles under the same conditions, and obtained two HER catalysts (Ru/OPC and Ru/rGO). The results indicate that Ru/OPC has excellent HER catalytic performance under alkaline conditions, not only superior to Ru/rGO, but also surpassing commercial Pt/C. In 1 M KOH; the overpotential of Ru/OPC is only 3 mV at -10 mA cm-2, greatly exceeding those of Ru/rGO (100 mV) and Pt/C (31 mV). Under high current density (j), the performance of Ru/OPC is even better; the overpotential is 79 mV and 136 mV at -100 mA cm-2 and -200 mA cm-2, respectively. More importantly, Ru/OPC also has a very high TOF and long-term stability, with a TOF of up to 10.62 H2 s-1 at an overpotential of 100 mV and almost no attenuation after 72 h of operation at -50 mA cm-2. Ru/OPC also exhibits good catalytic performance under acidic conditions, significantly superior to that of Ru/rGO. For Ru/OPC, the overpotential is 86 mV, 167 mV and 214 mV at -10 mA cm-2, -100 mA cm-2 and -200 mA cm-2, respectively. Under the same conditions, the overpotential of Ru/rGO is 143 mV, 253 mV and 306 mV at -10 mA cm-2, -100 mA cm-2 and -200 mA cm-2, respectively.

The Green Synthesis of Carbon Quantum Dots through One-step Hydrothermal Approach by Orange Juice for Rapid, and Accurate Detection of Dopamine

In the current study, the fluorescent Carbon quantum dots (CDs) were synthesized through one-step hydrothermal approach by orange juice without any additional agents. The as-prepared green-CDs (GCDs) were quasi-spherical shape ranged from 2 to 8 nm with an average diameter of 5 nm, and emitted bright blue fluorescent (FL) under ultraviolet light irradiation (Uv). Different detailed analyses proved that the as-prepared GCDs had good morphologies, various functional groups, high water solubility, great optical features, and excellent stability towards diverse environmental conditions. The results indicated that the as-prepared GCDs can detect different concentrations of dopamine from 1 to 100 µM based on the quenching of their native fluorescent. Furthermore, the good linear relationship was obtained for dopamine in the broad range of concentrations from 1 to 100 µM with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.81 µM. In addition, the as-prepared GCDs can be applied as a fluorescent probe for detection of dopamine in the different real samples.

Exploring the Potential of Heteroatom-Doped Graphene Nanoribbons as a Catalyst for Oxygen Reduction

In this study, we created a series of N, S, and P-doped and co-doped carbon catalysts using a single graphene nanoribbon (GNR) matrix and thoroughly evaluated the impact of doping on ORR activity and selectivity in acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions. The results obtained showed no significant changes in the GNR structure after the doping process, though changes were observed in the surface chemistry in view of the heteroatom insertion and oxygen depletion. Of all the dopants investigated, nitrogen (mainly in the form of pyrrolic-N and graphitic-N) was the most easily inserted and detected in the carbon matrix. The electrochemical analyses conducted showed that doping impacted the performance of the catalyst in ORR through changes in the chemical composition of the catalyst, as well as in the double-layer capacitance and electrochemically accessible surface area. In terms of selectivity, GNR doped with phosphorus and sulfur favored the 2e- ORR pathway, while nitrogen favored the 4e- ORR pathway. These findings can provide useful insights into the design of more efficient and versatile catalytic materials for ORR in different electrolyte solutions, based on functionalized carbon.

Integration of Carbon Nanotubes in an HFCVD Diamond Synthesis Process in a Methane-Rich H2/CH4 Gas Mixture

In this work, we present experimental data on carbon nanotubes integration during diamond synthesis. Carbon nanotubes layers were preliminarily deposited on silicon and diamond substrates, after which the substrates were loaded into the HFCVD reactor for further growth of the diamond phase. The CVD process was held in an argon-free H2/CH4 working gas mixture without the use of a catalyst for carbon nanotubes growth. It is shown that in a wide range of studied working gas composition (CH4 concentration up to 28.6 vol.%) nanotubes etched from the substrate surface before the diamond growth process began.

Photoluminescence Properties of Graphene Oxide in Non-Aqueous Solvents

Detailed attention to the interaction between graphene oxide (GO) and various organic fluorophores has been documented in literature as a result of which the impact of GO on the photophysical properties of the fluorophores is well known to the scientific community. However, the photoluminescence (PL) properties of GO in polar aprotic solvents are yet to be established. In this article, the PL properties of GO in polar aprotic solvents using various spectroscopic techniques have been reported. n-π* transition due to the C=O bonds in the sp3 hybrid regions and π-π* transition due to C=C bonds in the sp2 hybrid are prominent in GO. The presence of quasi-molecules within sp2 -sp3 domains acts as PL centers located in the sp3 matrixes of GO are responsible for the PL properties. This study showcases the presence of multiple emissive states of GO in polar aprotic solvents and conveys the fact that the PL properties of GO are very much wavelength-dependent.

Assessing the evolution of oxygenated functional groups on the graphene oxide surface upon mild thermal annealing in water

Graphene oxide (GO) is known to be a 2D metastable nanomaterial that can be reconstructed under thermal annealing into distinct oxidized and graphitic phases. Up to now, such phase transformation, mainly related to epoxide and hydroxyl functional groups, has been usually achieved by thermally treating layers of GO in the solid state. Here, we present the mild annealing of GO dispersed in an aqueous medium, performed at two temperatures, 50 °C and 80 °C, for different intervals of time. We show experimental evidences of the epoxide instability in the presence of water by means of XPS, cyclic voltammetry and Raman spectroscopy, demonstrating the reorganization of epoxide and hydroxyl moieties initiated by water molecules. In fact, at 50 °C an increase in oxygen content is detected in all annealed samples compared to untreated GO, with a transformation of epoxide groups into vicinal diols. On the other hand, at 80 °C the oxygen content decreases towards the initial value since the vicinal diols, previously formed, transform into single hydroxyls and C[double bond, length as m-dash]C bonds. Moreover, the higher temperature annealing likely favours oxygenated functional groups rearrangements and clustering, in accordance with the literature, leading to a higher electron affinity and conductivity of the graphenic network.

Achieving All-Plateau and High-Capacity Sodium Insertion in Topological Graphitized Carbon

Hard carbon anodes with all-plateau capacities below 0.1 V are prerequisites to achieve high-energy-density sodium-ion storage, which holds promise for future sustainable energy technologies. However, challenges in removing defects and improving the insertion of sodium ions head off the development of hard carbon to achieve this goal. Herein, a highly cross-linked topological graphitized carbon using biomass corn cobs through a two-step rapid thermal-annealing strategy is reported. The topological graphitized carbon constructed with long-range graphene nanoribbons and cavities/tunnels provides a multidirectional insertion of sodium ions whilst eliminating defects to absorb sodium ions at the high voltage region. Evidence from advanced techniques including in situ XRD, in situ Raman, and in situ/ex situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicates that the sodium ions' insertion and Na cluster formation occurred between curved topological graphite layers and in the topological cavity of adjacent graphite band entanglements. The reported topological insertion mechanism enables outstanding battery performance with a single full low-voltage plateau capacity of 290 mAh g-1 , which is almost 97% of the total capacity.

A novel electrochemical aptasensor based on eco-friendly synthesized titanium dioxide nanosheets and polyethyleneimine grafted reduced graphene oxide for ultrasensitive and selective detection of ciprofloxacin

Developing a rapid, sensitive, and efficient analytical method for the trace-level determination of highly concerning antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) is desirable to guarantee the safety of human health and ecosystems. In this work, a novel electrochemical aptasensor based on polyethyleneimine grafted reduced graphene oxide and titanium dioxide (rGO/PEI/TiO2) nanocomposite was constructed for ultrasensitive and selective detection of CIP. Through the in-situ electrochemical oxidation of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets, TiO2 nanosheets with good electrochemical response were prepared in a more convenient and eco-friendly method. The prepared TiO2 nanosheets promote charge transferring on electrode interface, and [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- as electrochemical active substance can be electrostatically attracted by rGO/PEI. Thus, electrochemical detection signal of the aptasensor variates a lot after specific binding with CIP, achieving working dynamic range of 0.003-10.0 μmol L-1, low detection limit down to 0.7 nmol L-1 (S/N = 3) and selectivity towards other antibiotics. Additionally, the aptasensor exhibited good agreement with HPLC method at 95% confidence level, and achieved good recoveries (96.8-106.3%) in real water samples, demonstrating its suitable applicability of trace detection of CIP in aquatic environment.

Constructing Oxygen-Related Defects in Carbon Nanodots with Janus Optical Properties: Noninvasive NIR Fluorescent Imaging and Effective Photocatalytic Therapy

Noninvasive fluorescence (FL) imaging and high-performance photocatalytic therapy (PCT) are opposing optical properties that are difficult to combine in a single material system. Herein, a facile approach to introducing oxygen-related defects in carbon dots (CDs) via post-oxidation with 2-iodoxybenzoic acid is reported, in which some nitrogen atoms are substituted by oxygen atoms. Unpaired electrons in these oxygen-related defects rearrange the electronic structure of the oxidized CDs (ox-CDs), resulting in an emerging near-infrared (NIR) absorption band. These defects not only contribute to enhanced NIR bandgap emission but also act as trappers for photoexcited electrons to promote efficient charge separation on the surface, leading to abundant photo-generated holes on the ox-CDs surface under visible-light irradiation. Under white LED torch irradiation, the photo-generated holes oxidize hydroxide to hydroxyl radicals in the acidification of the aqueous solution. In contrast, no hydroxyl radicals are detected in the ox-CDs aqueous solution under 730 nm laser irradiation, indicating noninvasive NIR FL imaging potential. Utilizing the Janus optical properties of the ox-CDs, the in vivo NIR FL imaging of sentinel lymph nodes around tumors and efficient photothermal enhanced tumor PCT are demonstrated.

Fracture Toughness Characteristics of Stacked Bilayer Graphene via Far-Field Displacement Measurements

Mechanical properties of graphene, e.g., strength, modulus, and fracture toughness are extremely sensitive to flaws. Here the fracture properties of stacked bilayer graphene sheets (SBLG) are reported, obtained via stacking two individually grown graphene sheets. The SBLG is presented here as a building block for flaw-resilient nanomaterials. The fracture properties of freestanding SBLG sheets, suspended on transmission electron microscope (TEM) grids, are characterized by stretching the TEM grid inside an scanning electron microscope (SEM) chamber and monitoring the local displacements in real-time. The fracture toughness is measured and expressed as a function of the critical displacement required to propagate existing cracks in the experiment via computational models. This approach decouples force and displacements measurements, and utilizes the known elastic modulus along with the known displacement boundary conditions at the onset of crack growth to estimate the far field force and stress. This strategy represents a breakthrough in nanoscale fracture mechanics for statistical analysis and high throughput experimens on multiple samples at a time. Results demonstrate that the SBLG is markedly tougher than as-grown single or multilayer graphene, with a mode I fracture toughness of ≈28.06 ± 7.5 MPam $\sqrt m $ . The mechanisms leading to a higher toughness of SBLG are also analyzed and discussed.

Thermally Conductive Molten Salt for Thermal Energy Storage: Synergistic Effect of a Hybrid Graphite-Graphene Nanoplatelet Filler

Renewable energy technologies depend, to a large extent, on the efficiency of thermal energy storage (TES) devices. In such storage applications, molten salts constitute an attractive platform due to their thermal and environmentally friendly properties. However, the low thermal conductivity (TC) of these salts (<1 W m-1 K-1) downgrades the storage kinetics. A commonly used method to enhance TC is the addition of highly conductive carbon-based fillers that form a composite material with molten salt. However, even that enhancement is rather limited (<9 W m-1 K-1). In this study, the partial exfoliation of graphite to graphene nanoplatelets (GnP) in a molten salt matrix is explored as a means to address this problem. A novel approach of hybrid filler formation directly in the molten salt is used to produce graphite-GnP-salt hybrid composite material. The good dispersion quality of the fillers in the salt matrix facilitates bridging between large graphite particles by the smaller GnP particles, resulting in the formation of a thermally conductive network. The thermal conductivity of the hybrid composite (up to 44 W m-1 K-1) is thus enhanced by two orders of magnitude versus that of the pristine salt (0.64 W m-1 K-1).

Structure-Controlled Carbon Hosts for Dendrite-Free Aqueous Zinc Batteries

The surging demand for environmental-friendly and safe electrochemical energy storage systems has driven the development of aqueous zinc (Zn)-ion batteries (ZIBs). However, metallic Zn anodes suffer from severe dendrite growth and large volume change, resulting in a limited lifetime for aqueous ZIB applications. Here, it is shown that 3D mesoporous carbon (MC) with controlled carbon and defect configurations can function as a highly reversible and dendrite-free Zn host, enabling the stable operation of aqueous ZIBs. The MC host has a structure-controlled architecture that contains optimal sp2 -carbon and defect sites, which results in an improved initial nucleation energy barrier and promotes uniform Zn deposition. As a consequence, the MC host shows outstanding Zn plating/stripping performance over 1000 cycles at 2 mA cm-2 and over 250 cycles at 6 mA cm-2 in asymmetric cells. Density functional theory calculations further reveal the role of the defective sp2 -carbon surface in Zn adsorption energy. Moreover, a full cell based on Zn@MC900 anode and V2 O5 cathode exhibits remarkable rate performance and cycling stability over 3500 cycles. These results establish a structure-mechanism-performance relationship of the carbon host as a highly reversible Zn anode for the reliable operation of ZIBs.

Boosting the ultraviolet shielding and thermal retardancy properties of unsaturated polyester resin by employing electrochemically exfoliated e-GO nanosheets

In this work, a series of unsaturated polyester resin (UPRs)/electrochemically exfoliated graphene oxide (e-GO) polymer nanocomposites with different ratios of e-GO (0.05, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2 wt%) were prepared via an in situ polymerization method. The surface morphology and structural and chemical properties of the original UPR and UPR/e-GO nanocomposites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The positive influence of e-GO nanosheets on the mechanical properties, thermal stability, and anti-UV aging performance of UPR/e-GO nanocomposites was demonstrated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The obtained results showed that the incorporation of e-GO nanosheets within the UPR matrix, despite the addition of e-GO at as low as 0.2 wt% comprehensively improves the advanced functional properties of UPR/e-GO nanocomposites as compared to the original UPR. In addition, artificial weathering testing of quartz-based artificial stone using UPR/e-GO 0.2 wt% showed excellent UV-resistant efficiency, supporting the use of e-GO nanosheets as an additive in manufacturing the industrial-scale UPRs-based artificial quartz stone samples for real outdoor applications.
