Abstract
The effect of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) plasmid treatment on sow reproductive performance was examined. Forty pregnant sows (three-way crossbreed: Landrace × Yorkshire × Duroc) at 85 days of gestation were included in the study and consisted of twenty primiparous and twenty multiparous sows (third parity). Sows were randomly assigned to the control and treatment groups. The treatment group received 5 mg dose of GHRH plasmid injection via electroporation, whereas the control group received a phosphate buffer solution. Reproductive indicators, including serum insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) concentration and weaned piglet data, were assessed. In the GHRH plasmid-treated group, serum IGF-1 concentration significantly increased compared with that in the control group, a trend observed in primiparous and multiparous sows. The key indicator of reproductive performance, litter size, showed that for control primiparous sows (C-PS), it was 10.90 ± 0.99 kg, while for control multiparous sows (C-MS), it was 14.00 ± 0.67 kg. Furthermore, for primiparous sows treated with GHRH plasmid (G-PS), the litter size was 11.60 ± 0.97 kg, and for multiparous sows treated with GHRH plasmid (G-MS), it was 14.00 ± 0.82 kg. The GHRH plasmid-treated group also exhibited a higher number of total births and surviving piglet numbers, along with a decrease in stillborn piglets; however, there was no significant difference in birth weight. The results suggest that GHRH plasmid treatment can enhance the reproductive performance of sows.

Abstract
Korean Native Black Goats deliver mainly during the cold season. However, in winter, there is a high risk of stunted growth and mortality for their newborns. Therefore, we conducted this study to develop a KNBG parturition detection system that detects and provides managers with early notification of the signs of parturition. The KNBG parturition detection system consists of triaxial accelerometers, gateways, a server, and parturition detection alarm terminals. Then, two different data, the labor and non-labor data, were acquired and a Decision Tree algorithm was used to classify them. After classifying the labor and non-labor states, the sum of the labor status data was multiplied by the activity count value to enhance the classification accuracy. Finally, the Labor Pain Index (LPI) was derived. Based on the LPI, the optimal processing time window was determined to be 10 min, and the threshold value for labor classification was determined to be 14 240.92. The parturition detection rate was 82.4%, with 14 out of 17 parturitions successfully detected, and the average parturition detection time was 90.6 min before the actual parturition time of the first kid. The KNBG parturition detection system is expected to reduce the risk of stunted growth and mortality due to hypothermia in KNBG kids by detecting parturition 90.6 min before the parturition of the first kid, with a success rate of 82.4%, enabling parturition nursing.

Abstract
Avian influenza virus (AIV) is a pathogen with zoonotic and pandemic potential. Migratory birds are natural reservoirs of all known subtypes of AIVs, except for H17N10 and H18N11, and they have been implicated in previous highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks worldwide. This study identified and characterized the first isolate of the H13N6 subtype from a Vega gull (Larus vegae mongolicus) in South Korea. The amino acid sequence of hemagglutinin gene showed a low pathogenic AIV subtype and various amino acid substitutions were found in the sequence compared to the reference sequence and known H13 isolates. High sequence homology with other H13N6 isolates was found in HA, NA, PB1, and PA genes, but not for PB2, NP, M, and NS genes. Interestingly, various point amino acid mutations were found on all gene segments, and some are linked to an increased binding to human-type receptors, resistance to antivirals, and virulence. Evolutionary and phylogenetic analyses showed that all gene segments are gull-adapted, with a phylogeographic origin of mostly Eurasian, except for PB2, PA, and M. Findings from this study support the evidence that reassortment of AIVs continuously occurs in nature, and migratory birds are vital in the intercontinental spread of avian influenza viruses.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic is caused by the zoonotic SARS-CoV-2 virus. A wide range of animals that interact with humans have been investigated to identify potential infections. As the extent of infection became more apparent, extensive animal monitoring became necessary to assess their susceptibility. This study analyzed nasal swabs and blood samples collected from randomly selected Korean native cattle and Korean native black goats. The tests conducted included real-time qPCR to detect SARS-CoV-2 antigens, an ELISA to detect antibodies, and a plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) to determine the presence of neutralizing antibodies. Among the 1798 animals tested (consisting of 1174 Korean native cattle and 624 Korean native black goats), SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA was detected in one Korean native cattle and one Korean native black goat. ELISA testing revealed positive results for antibodies in 54 Korean native cattle (4.60%) and 16 Korean native black goats (2.56%), while PRNTs yielded positive results in 51 Korean native cattle (4.34%) and 14 Korean native black goats (2.24%). The presence of SARS-CoV-2 antigens and/or antibodies was identified in animals on farms where farmworkers were already infected. It is challenging to completely rule out the possibility of reverse zoonotic transmission from humans to livestock in Korea, although the transmission is not to the same extent as it is in highly susceptible animal species like minks, cats, and dogs. This is due to the limited geographical area and the dense, intensive farming practices implemented in these regions. In conclusion, continuous viral circulation between humans and animals is inevitable, necessitating ongoing animal monitoring to ensure public health and safety.

Abstract
Riemerella (R.) anatipestifer poses a significant threat to ducks, resulting in mortality rates ranging from 5-75%. This disease is highly infectious and economically consequential for domestic ducks. Although other avian species, such as chickens, also display susceptibility, the impact is comparatively less severe than in ducks. IL-17A has a pronounced correlation with R. anatipestifer infection in ducks, which is less in chickens. This study performed an in vitro transcriptome analysis using chicken splenic lymphocytes collected at 4-, 8-, and 24-hour intervals following R. anatipestifer stimulation. The primary objective was to discern the differentially expressed genes, with a specific focus on IL-17A and IL-17F expression. Moreover, an association between specific miRNAs with NOS2 and CCL5 was identified. The manifestation of riemerellosis in chickens was linked to heightened expression of Th1- and Th2-associated cells, while Th17 cells exhibited minimal involvement. This study elucidated the mechanism behind the absence of a Th17 immune response, shedding light on its role throughout disease progression. Additionally, through small RNA sequencing, we identified a connection between miRNAs, specifically miR-456-3p and miR-16-5p, and their respective target genes NOS2 and CCL5. These miRNAs are potential regulators of the inflammatory process during riemerellosis in chickens.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Patients with stable lower extremity artery diseases (LEAD) frequently present with coronary artery diseases; thus, concomitant percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) at the time of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is often performed. We investigated the influence of concomitant PTA on both cardiovascular (CV) and limb outcomes in the Korean National Health Insurance Service registry.
Methods
Among 78,185 patients undergoing PCI between 2012 and 2015, 6,563 patients (279 for the PTA+PCI group vs. 6,284 for the PCI group) suffering from stable LEAD without limb ischemia were included. Major adverse CV events (MACEs) were defined as a composite of CV death, myocardial infarction (MI) and coronary revascularization. Patients were followed for at least 3 years.
Results
After 1:5 propensity score matching was conducted, 279 patients in the PTA+PCI group and 1,385 patients in the PCI group were compared. The risk of all-cause death was higher in the PTA+PCI group than in the PCI group, whereas the risks of MACE, MI, revascularization, stroke, CV death and bleeding event were not different between the 2 groups in the matched cohort. In contrast, the risks of end-stage renal diseases and unfavorable limb outcomes were higher in the PTA+PCI group than in the PCI group (Figure 1). Mediation analyses revealed that amputation and repeat Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty after discharge significantly mediated the association between the concomitant PTA and all-cause death (Figure 2).
Conclusions
CPTA at the time of PCI is not associated with an increased risk of CV events but may increase the risk of all-cause death by increasing unfavorable renal and limb outcomes in patients with stable LEAD.

Abstract
Background Coccidiosis is a poultry disease that occurs worldwide and is caused by Eimeria species. The infection is associated with reduced feed efficiency, body weight gain, and egg production. This study aimed to investigate the current status of coccidiosis and anticoccidial resistance to anticoccidial drugs used as part of control strategies for this disease in Korean chicken farms. Results An overall prevalence of 75% (291/388) was found. Positive farms contained several Eimeria species (mean = 4.2). Of the positive samples, E. acervulina (98.6%), E. maxima (84.8%), and E. tenella (82.8%) were the most prevalent species. Compared with cage-fed chickens, broilers and native chickens reared in free-range management were more at risk of acquiring an Eimeria infection. Sensitivities to six anticoccidial drugs (clopidol, diclazuril, maduramycin, monensin, salinomycin, and toltrazuril) were tested using nine field samples. Compared with untreated healthy control chickens, the body weight gains of infected chickens and treated/infected chickens were significantly reduced in all groups. Fecal oocyst shedding was significantly reduced in four clopidol-treated/infected groups, three diclazuril-treated/infected groups, two toltrazuril-treated/infected groups, one monensin-treated/infected group, and one salinomycin-treated/infected group, compared with the respective untreated/infected control groups. Intestinal lesion scores were also reduced in three clopidol-treated/infected groups, one monensin-treated/infected group, and one toltrazuril-treated/infected group. However, an overall assessment using the anticoccidial index, percent optimum anticoccidial activity, relative oocyst production, and reduced lesion score index found that all field samples had strong resistance to all tested anticoccidial drugs. Conclusion The results of this large-scale epidemiological investigation and anticoccidial sensitivity testing showed a high prevalence of coccidiosis and the presence of severe drug resistant Eimeria species in the field. These findings will be useful for optimizing the control of coccidiosis in the poultry industry. Abstract
“Gut health” refers to the physical state and physiological function of the gastrointestinal tract and in the livestock system; this topic is often focused on the complex interacting components of the intestinal system that influence animal growth performance and host-microbial homeostasis. Regardless, there is an increasing need to better understand the complexity of the intestinal system and the various factors that influence gut health, since the intestine is the largest immune and neuroendocrine organ that interacts with the most complex microbiome population. As we face the post-antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) era in many countries of the world, livestock need more options to deal with food security, food safety, and antibiotic resilience to maintain agricultural sustainability to feed the increasing human population. Furthermore, developing novel antibiotic alternative strategies needs a comprehensive understanding of how this complex system maintains homeostasis as we face unpredictable changes in external factors like antibiotic-resistant microbes, farming practices, climate changes, and consumers’ preferences for food. In this review, we attempt to assemble and summarize all the relevant information on chicken gut health to provide deeper insights into various aspects of gut health. Due to the broad and complex nature of the concept of “gut health”, we have highlighted the most pertinent factors related to the field performance of broiler chickens.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The optimal fluid strategy to prevent maternal hypotension during caesarean delivery remains unclear. This study aim was to compare the incidence of post-spinal anaesthesia hypotension in women receiving either colloid or crystalloid coload in the setting of prophylactic phenylephrine infusion during caesarean delivery. METHODS Healthy mothers undergoing elective caesarean delivery under spinal anaesthesia were randomised to receive a rapid intravenous coload with 6% hydroxyethyl starch 130/0.4 10 mL/kg (colloid group) or balanced crystalloid solution (Plasma Solution A) 10 mL/kg (crystalloid group) during spinal anaesthesia. All women had a prophylactic phenylephrine infusion initiated at 25 μg/min immediately after the subarachnoid block and titrated to systolic blood pressure using a standardised protocol. The primary outcome was the incidence of hypotension (systolic blood pressure <80% of baseline) until delivery. RESULTS The incidence of hypotension was 50% in the colloid group and 62% in the crystalloid group (absolute difference, -12% [95% CI -33% to 9%]; relative risk, 0.8 [95% CI 0.56 to 1.14]; P=0.314). No significant difference between groups was found in the number of hypotensive episodes (median 0.5 [IQR 0 to 1] vs 1 [0 to 2], P=0.132) or phenylephrine dose (675 [IQR 425 to 975] μg vs 750 [625 to 950] μg, P=0.109). The incidence of severe hypotension, symptomatic hypotension, bradycardia, nausea, and the neonatal outcomes were not significantly different. CONCLUSIONS This study found no benefit of colloid coload compared with crystalloid coload for preventing maternal hypotension in the presence of prophylactic phenylephrine infusion during caesarean delivery.

Abstract
Riemerella anatipestifer is one of the most devastating pathogens affecting the global duck farms. Infection is involved in secretion of proinflammatory cytokines, including interleukin- (IL-) 17A. During the immune response to infection, IL-22 and IL-17A are often produced concurrently and at high levels in inflamed tissues. Little is known about duck IL-22 (duIL-22) during R. anatipestifer infection. We describe the characterization of duIL-22 and its mRNA expression analysis in splenic lymphocytes and macrophages treated with heat-killed R. anatipestifer and in the spleens and livers of R. anatipestifer-infected ducks. Full-length cDNA of duIL-22 encoded 197 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence of duIL-22 shared a 30.4-40.5% similarity with piscine counterparts, 57.4-60.1% with mammalian homologs, and 93.4% similarity to the chicken. Duck IL-22 mRNA expression level was relatively high in the skin of normal ducks. It was increased in mitogen-stimulated splenic lymphocytes and in killed R. anatipestifer-activated splenic lymphocytes and macrophages. Compared with healthy ducks, IL-22 transcript expression was significantly upregulated in the livers and spleens on days 1 and 4 postinfection, but not on day 7. IL-17A was significantly increased in the spleens only on day 4 postinfection and in the livers at all time points. When splenic lymphocytes were stimulated with heat-killed R. anatipestifer, CD4+ cells predominantly produced IL-22 while IL-17A was expressed both by CD4+ and CD4- cells. These results suggested that IL-22 and IL-17A are likely expressed in different cell types during R. anatipestifer infection.

Introduction
Home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) is a useful tool to identify hypertension and to decide whether a patient's blood pressure (BP) is controlled. The use of automatized oscillometric BP measurement devices has become increasingly popular with help of information technology and internet of things to the devices. However, applying HBPM to daily clinical practices is still challenging, because most patients with hypertension are in age groups not familiar to digital devices and internet and high BP criteria using average home BP values are often useless in outpatient clinics without easily accessible average BP calculation tools. Therefore, we developed a simple and straightforward method to interpret HBPM through counts of BP ≥135/85 mmHg.
Methods
We simulated 400 cases of HBPM using a random number generator function in statistical software. The simulated average home systolic BP (SBP) and its standard deviation (SD) were 125±15 mmHg and 12±5 mmHg and the number of HBP readings was 24 times. The simulated diastolic BP (DBP) was randomly selected to 50–75% of the SBP. The validation of the binary interpretation method was conducted using actual HBPM data from 386 subjects in a rural area of South Korea. Receiver operating characteristics curve analysis was conducted, and linear regression and logarithmic models were fitted between the numbers of home BP ≥135/85 mmHg and mean BP. Hypertension was defined with average home BP ≥135/85 mmHg.
Results
In the simulated cohort, hypertension was presented in 197 cases (49.3%). The C-index of the numbers of BP readings ≥135/85 mmHg was 0.994 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.990–0.998), and ≥12 of 24 BP readings ≥135/85 mmHg showed a sensitivity of 95.4%, a specificity of 95.1% and an accuracy of 95.3% for the diagnosis of hypertension. In validation cohort, the numbers of home BP measurements varied from 8 to 81 times. The validation cohort similarly showed that the C-index of the ratio between the number of high BP readings (≥135/85 mmHg) to the number of BP measurements (R-NHBP/NBP) was 0.985 (95% CI, 0.976–0.994) and the best accuracy was shown at R-NHBP/NBP of ≥0.45. R-NHBP/NBP of ≥0.5 showed a sensitivity of 0.957, a specificity of 0.907 and an accuracy of 0.927. The accuracy of the R-NHBP/NBP of ≥0.5 decreased as SD and the range of SBP increased, whereas it did not change with the number of measurements (Figure 1). R-NHBP/NBP <0.2 predicted normotension and R-NHBP/NBP >0.8 predicted hypertension in 95% confidence. Mean widths of the 95 prediction intervals for the average SBP and DBP were 18.2 mmHg and 12.6 mmHg, respectively (Figure 2).
Conclusion
Counting the number of BP ≥135/85 mmHg can provide accurate assessments for the BP levels. R-NHBP/NBP of ≥0.5 is a simple and accurate marker of high BP in HBPM, and R-NHBP/NBP could be a useful tool to assess BP levels in patients practicing HBPM.

Abstract
Chicken NK-lysin peptide 2 (cNK-2) is a natural lytic peptide with direct cytotoxicity against many apicomplexan parasites including Eimeria. Developing an effective oral delivery strategy to express cNK-2 in the intestine, where Eimeria parasites interact with the host's gut epithelial cells, may effectively reduce the fecundity of parasites and minimize intestinal damage. Furthermore, cNK-2 modulates gut immune responses to decrease local inflammation elicited by Eimeria infection in the intestine. Therefore, we developed a stable strain of Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) that carries cNK-2 to the gut to determine its effectiveness in ameliorating the negative impacts of coccidiosis and to replace the use of antibiotics in controlling coccidiosis in commercial broiler chicken production. Chickens were randomly allocated into eight treatment groups: two control groups (NC: E. acervulina infected non-B. subtilis control; CON: non-infected control); three B. subtilis-empty vector (EV) groups (EV6: 106 cfu/day/bird; EV8: 108 cfu/day/bird; EV10: 1010 cfu/day/bird), and three B. subtilis-cNK-2 groups (NK6: 106 cfu/day/bird; NK8: 108 cfu/day/bird; NK10: 1010 cfu/day/bird). All chickens, except those in the CON group, were challenged with 5,000 freshly sporulated E. acervulina oocysts through oral gavage on day 15. Chickens were given an oral dose of B. subtilis on days 14, 15, and 16. Body weight, weight gains, and fecal oocyst shedding were measured. To investigate the efficacy of oral B. subtilis-cNK-2 against coccidiosis, gene expression of gut health-related biomarkers was measured using RT-PCR. Markers included SOD1, CAT, and HMOX1 for oxidative stress in the spleen and intestinal mucosa, OCLN, ZO-1, and JAM2 for tight junction proteins, and MUC2 for mucin gene expression in the gut. The results showed that oral treatment of young chickens with B. subtilis-cNK-2 improved growth performance, enhanced gut integrity, and reduced fecal oocyst shedding. Altogether, these results confirm B. subtilis-cNK-2 treatment as a promising and effective alternative strategy to replace antibiotics against coccidiosis based on its ability to reduce parasite survival, to reduce coccidiosis-induced body weight loss, and to decrease gut damage based on the enhanced expression of proteins associated with gut integrity and intestinal health.

Abstract
CCL5 (formerly RANTES) belongs to the CC (or β) chemokine family and is associated with a plethora of inflammatory disorders and pathologic states. CCL5 is mainly produced and secreted by T cells, macrophages, epithelial cells, and fibroblasts and acts as a chemoattractant to recruit effector cells to the inflammation sites. Chicken CCL5 (chCCL5) protein is closely related to avian CCL5 orthologs but distinct from mammalian orthologs, and its modulatory roles in the immune response are largely unknown. The present work was undertaken to characterize the immunological properties of chCCL5 using the new sets of anti-chCCL5 mouse monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). Eight different mAbs (6E11, 6H1, 8H11, 11G1, 11G11, 12H1, 13D1, and 13G3) were characterized for their specificity and binding ability toward chCCL5. Two (13G3 and 6E11) of them were selected to detect native chCCL5 in chCCL5-specific antigen-capture ELISA. Using 13G3 and 6E11 as capture and detection antibodies, respectively, the ELISA system detected serum chCCL5 secretions in Clostridium perfringens- and Eimeria-infected chickens. The intracellular expressions of chCCL5 in primary cells or cell lines derived from chickens were validated in immunocytochemistry and flow cytometry assays using both 13G3 and 6E11 mAbs. Furthermore, 6E11, but not 13G3, neutralized chCCL5-induced chemotaxis in vitro using chicken PBMCs. These molecular characteristics of chCCL5 demonstrate the potential application of anti-chCCL5 mAbs and CCL5-specific antigen-capture detection ELISA for detecting native chCCL5 in biological samples. The availability of these new immunological tools will be valuable for fundamental and applied studies in avian species.

Abstract
IL7 is a hematopoietic growth factor required for development and maintenance of lymphocytes including T cells, B cells, and natural killer cells. Recently, chicken IL7 (chIL7) has been cloned and studied in viral and parasite infection models. However, no monoclonal antibodies (mAb) that specifically detect chIL7 have been developed so far. In this study, recombinant chIL7 that expressed for immunization and mAb against chIL7 were developed and characterized to assess their immunologic properties. Five mAb exhibiting specific binding to chIL7 were generated and investigated for their applicability by Western blot, ELISA, and neutralization assays. A sandwich ELISA mAb pair that enables the measurement of chIL7 protein levels in biological samples from Eimeria-infected chickens was identified and several mAb neutralized chicken primary thymocyte proliferation mediated by chIL7. The mAb developed in this study will be valuable reagents for fundamental and applied immunological studies in poultry.

Abstract
3,3’-Diindolylmethane (DIM) is found in cruciferous vegetables and is used to treat various inflammatory diseases because of its potential anti-inflammatory effects. To investigate effects of DIM in Riemerella anatipestifer-infected ducks which induce upregulation of inflammatory cytokines, ducks were treated orally with DIM at dose of 200 mg/kg/day and infected the following day with R. anatipestifer. Infected and DIM-treated ducks exhibited 14% increased survival rate and significantly decreased bacterial burden compared to infected untreated ducks. Next, the effect on the expression level of inflammatory cytokines (interleukin [IL]-17A, IL-17F, IL-6, IL-1β) of both in vitro and in vivo DIM-treated groups was monitored by quantitative reverse-transcription PCR (qRT-PCR). Generally, the expression levels of the cytokines were significantly reduced in DIM-treated splenic lymphocytes stimulated with killed R. anatipestifer compared to stimulated untreated splenic lymphocytes. Similarly, the expression levels of the cytokines were significantly reduced in the spleens and livers of DIM-treated R. anatipestifer–infected ducks compared to infected untreated ducks. This study demonstrated the ameliorative effects of DIM in ducks infected with R. anatipestifer. Thus, DIM can potentially be used to prevent and/or treat R. anatipestifer infection via inhibition of inflammatory cytokine expression.

Abstract
Chemokine (C-C motif) ligand (CCL) 4 is a CC chemokine subfamily member defined by the sequential positioning of conserved cysteine residues. Upon the binding of G-protein-coupled receptors on the cell surface, CCL4 mediates a diverse set of biological processes including chemotaxis, tumorigenesis, homeostasis and thymopoiesis. Although the physiological roles of mammalian CCL4s were elucidated >20 years ago, there is limited information on the biological activities of chicken CCL4 (chCCL4). In the present study, we developed and characterized mouse monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against chCCL4 to characterize better the immunological properties of chCCL4. Out of initial screening of >400 clones, two mAbs detecting chCCL4, 1A12 and 15D9, were identified and characterized using western blotting and chCCL4-specific antigen-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and their neutralizing activity was validated by chCCL4-induced peripheral blood mononuclear cell chemotaxis assay. Furthermore, the intracellular expression of chCCL4 in various chicken cells by immunocytochemistry and flow cytometry was confirmed using 1A12 and 15D9 mAbs. These results collectively indicate that 1A12 and 15D9 mAbs specifically detect chicken CCL4 and they will be valuable immune reagents for basic and applied studies in avian immunology.

Abstract
Riemerella anatipestifer causes infectious disease and considerable economic loss in the duck industry worldwide. Our previous studies demonstrated an association between proinflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-17A and R. anatipestifer infection. Here, we provide evidence for IL-17A involvement in R. anatipestifer infection using a mouse model. Mice showed higher resistance to R. anatipestifer infection than ducks, with median lethal doses (LD50) of 3.5 × 1010 and 5 × 107 colony-forming units (CFU), respectively. Twenty-four hours after infection, mice with a sub-lethal dose (3.5 × 109 CFU) exhibited levels of IL-17A and IL-23 expression similar to uninfected mice. Thus, we hypothesized that exogenous IL-17A or IL-23 administration affects susceptibility of mice to R. anatipestifer. Mice pretreated with IL-17A or IL-23 prior to sub-lethal dose infection of R. anatipestifer exhibited increased bacterial burden and spleen weights compared to untreated infected mice, confirming the involvement of IL-17A in susceptibility to R. anatipestifer infection in vivo.

Abstract
Abstract
A 56-year-old male was referred in order to identify Fabry disease after his older brother was confirmed as Fabry disease of cardiac variant type. He had been treated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCMP) five years ago. He didn’t have a history of hypertension. Blood pressure was 118/65 mmHg and pulse rate was 75 beats per minute. Serum creatinine was 1.07 mg/dl and estimated glomerular filtration rate was 75.2 ml/min. Cardiac enzymes including CK-MB and troponin-T were normal. There was no proteinuria on urinalysis. A 12-leads electrocardiogram revealed normal sinus rhythm with severe left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and strain pattern. Transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) showed diffuse severe concentric hypertrophy of the left ventricle (LV) of an average ventricular wall thickness of 17 mm with normal systolic function (left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), 56%). TTE also revealed left ventricular outflow tract obstruction with systolic anterior motion of mitral valve. Right ventricle (RV) was also hypertrophied (RV free wall thickness, 7mm). Also, echocardiography revealed findings of diastolic dysfunction; left atrial enlargement, mitral inflow of a pseudo-normal pattern on pulsed wave Doppler image and an increased left ventricular filling pressure on tissue Doppler image (E/e’=20). Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed diffuse LV and RV hypertrophy and preserved LV systolic function with hypokinesia of mid-septal LV wall. Delayed hyper-enhancement (DHE) was not found within entire myocardium. A coronary CT angiography was performed because of regional wall motion abnormality but did not show any significant stenoses. He was confirmed as Fabry disease with the same genetic mutation as his brother. He did not present symptoms and signs of any other organs besides only myocardial hypertrophy. He received enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with intravenous agalsidase-beta every other week via outpatient department for 3 years. Recently, TTE was performed and showed diffuse severe concentric LVH of an average ventricular wall thickness increased to 19 mm despite regularly ERT. Focal intramural and subepicardial DHE was newly developed at LV basal lateral and septal wall on cardiac MRI. Neutralizing antibody against agalsidase -beta was not found in serum.
Fabry disease of cardiac variant type can be delayed in diagnostic aspect because of absence of typical symptoms and signs. Despite the absence of neutralizing antibody, ERT did not prevent both further myocardial hypertrophy and myocardial fibrosis in patient with advanced myocardial hypertrophy caused by delayed diagnosis of Fabry disease. Suspicion of Fabry disease through detailed history taking including family history in patients with diffuse ventricular hypertrophy on an echocardiography can lead to early diagnosis and treatment and can result in improvement in a clinical outcome.

Abstract
Compared with mammals, the functionality of chicken cytokines is not well understood because of the unavailability of immune reagents. Mammalian interleukin (IL)-13 is an important Th2 type cytokine with well-known biological functions through its 2 receptors, IL-13 receptor (IL-13R)-α1 and IL-13Rα2. In the present study, we developed mouse monoclonal antibodies (mAb) against chIL-13 and further investigated their specificity in detecting endogenously produced chIL-13. Upon characterization of mAb using indirect ELISA and Western blot, the capture ELISA was developed for detecting chIL-13. Neutralizing effects were tested by measuring nitric oxide (NO) production and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression in primary chicken monocytes stimulated with chIL-13, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), chIL-13+LPS, or chIL-13+LPS+mAb. In addition, gene expression of chIL-13Rα1, chIL-13Rα2, and TGF-β1 was tested in chicken monocytes treated with chIL-13 or chIL-13+mAb. Based on indirect ELISA, 5 mAb that detected recombinant chIL-13 were identified, and all of them specifically detected recombinant chIL-13 protein by Western blotting. An optimal signal was obtained with 2 mAb (#9B11 and #10A2) in a pairing assay, and these 2 mAb were used in a capture assay. A neutralization assay further revealed that chIL-13 reduced LPS-stimulated NO production and iNOS expression in monocytes and macrophage cells, and the 2 mAb (#9B11 and #10A2) abrogated these effects. In addition, chIL-13-induced expressions of chIL-13Rα2 and TGF-β1 were neutralized by the 2 mAb. In summary, the present study showed that chIL-13 may be involved in the alternative activation of primary monocytes in chickens and that chIL-13 signaling may be regulated through chIL-13Rα2 binding and TGF-β1 secretion. Importantly, the newly developed anti-chIL-13 mAb will serve as valuable immune reagents for future studies on the biological activity of chIL-13 and its receptors.

Abstract
Avian coccidiosis is caused by Eimeria, which is an intracellular apicomplexan parasite that invades through the intestinal tract to cause devastating disease. Upon invasion through the intestinal epithelial cells, a strong inflammatory response is induced that results in complete villous destruction, diarrhea, hemorrhage, and in severe cases, death. Since the life cycle of Eimeria parasites is complex and comprises several intra- and extracellular developmental stages, the host immune responses are diverse and complex. Interferon-γ-mediated T helper (Th)1 response was originally considered to be the predominant immune response in avian coccidiosis. However, recent studies on other avian T cell lineages such as Th17 and T regulatory cells have implicated their significant involvement in maintaining gut homeostasis in normal and disease states including coccidiosis. Therefore, there is a need to understand better their role in coccidiosis. This review focuses on research findings concerning the host immune response induced by avian coccidiosis in the context of T cell immunity, including expression of T-cell-related cytokines and surface molecules that determine the phenotype of T lymphocytes.

Abstract
R. anatipestifer (RA) is one of the most harmful bacterial pathogens affecting the duck industry, and infection is associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines, including IL-17A. Another proinflammatory cytokine, IL-23, is critical for the development of Th17 cells, which produce IL-17. However, IL-23 roles have not been studied in this infection. Here, we describe the identification and mRNA expression analysis of duck IL-23p19 (duIL-23p19) in splenic lymphocytes and macrophages stimulated with killed RA and in spleens of RA-infected ducks. Expression of duIL-23p19 transcript identified in this study was relatively high in livers of healthy ducks and was upregulated in mitogen-activated splenic lymphocytes as well as in splenic lymphocytes and macrophages stimulated with killed RA. In spleens of RA-infected ducks, expression levels of duIL-23p19 transcript were unchanged at all time points except on days 4 and 7 post-infection; however, duIL-17A and IL-17F expression levels were upregulated in both spleens of RA-infected ducks and splenic lymphocytes and macrophages stimulated with killed RA. In sera collected at 24 h after this infection, duIL-23p19 expression levels were unchanged, whereas IL-17A significantly upregulated. These results suggest that IL-23p19 does not play a critical role in the IL-17A response in early stages of RA-infected ducks.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To measure serum leptin concentration in dogs with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism and varying degrees of cholestatic disease and determine whether serum levels differed between dogs with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism and those with gall bladder mucocoele. MATERIALS AND METHODS Client-owned healthy dogs (n=20), dogs diagnosed with gall bladder mucocoele (n=20) and dogs diagnosed with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (n=60) were enrolled. Only dogs of normal body condition score were included. Dogs with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism were divided into three groups according to the severity of cholestatic disease: normal gall bladder (n=20), cholestasis (n=20) and gall bladder mucocoele (n=20). Serum leptin levels were measured using sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS Serum concentrations of leptin were similar between dogs with gall bladder mucocoele and those with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism accompanied by gall bladder mucocoele; these concentrations were significantly higher than those in healthy control dogs. In dogs with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism, circulating leptin concentration significantly increased with the severity of cholestasis: higher in the cholestasis group than the normal gall bladder group and higher in the gall bladder mucocoele group than the cholestasis group. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Elevated circulating leptin concentration was associated with canine pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism and gall bladder mucocoele. Homeostatic imbalance of leptin concentration might be associated with severity of cholestatic disease in pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism.

Abstract
Indoles, as the ligands of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), have been shown to possess immune-modulating property in terms of the balancing between regulatory T cells (Treg) and T helper 17 cells (Th17) activities. In the present study, we examined the effects of dietary indoles, 3,3′-diindolylmethane (DIM) and indole-3-carbinol (I3C), on CD4+T cell population and functions in chickens. Furthermore, the effects of dietary DIM treatment on chicken coccidiosis caused by an apicomplexan parasite were investigated. Dietary treatment of healthy chickens with DIM and I3C induced increased CD4+CD25+ (Treg) cells and the mRNA expression of IL-10, while decreasing number of CD4+IL-17A+ (Th17) cells and Th17-related cytokines transcripts expression in the intestine. In addition, we explored the role of AhR in indole-treated splenic lymphocytes by using AhR antagonist and our results suggested that DIM is a ligand for chicken AhR. In chicken coccidiosis, treatment of DIM increased the ratio of Treg/Th17 cells and significantly reduced intestinal lesion although no significant changes in body weight and fecal oocyst production were noted compared to non-treated control group. These results indicate that DIM is likely to affect the ratios of Treg/Th17 reducing the level of local inflammatory response induced by Eimeria or facilitate repairing process of inflamed gut following Eimeria infection. The results described herein are thus consistent with the concept that AhR ligand modulates the T cell immunity through the alteration of Treg/Th17 cells with Treg dominance. To our knowledge, present study is the first scientific report showing the effects of dietary indole on T cell immunity in poultry species.

Abstract
We identified low-molecular weight compounds derived from the antimicrobial peptide human neutrophil peptide-1 that bind to Lipid II, an essential precursor of bacterial cell wall biosynthesis. These compounds act as antibacterials on multiple biosynthesis pathways with specificity against gram-positive organisms. Here, we have tested a small subset of our most promising leads against the bacterium Clostridium perfringens and sporozoites of Eimeria tenella, an intracellular protozoan parasite that causes intestinal disease in poultry. We found one compound, 1611-0203 (2-{2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-[2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-(2-hydroxyphenoxy)phenyl]phenoxy}phenol), specifically to inhibit growth of both agents out of all compounds tested. Additionally, compound 1611-0203 inhibits Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus spp. Mechanism-of-action studies further reveal that 1611-0203 affects cell wall biosynthesis and inhibits additional biosynthetic pathways. Combined, our results indicate that compounds such as 1611-0203 have therapeutic potential to act as anti-infectives against various organisms simultaneously.

Abstract
Th17-cell-mediated inflammation is affected by the soluble form of common cytokine receptor γ chain (γc). We previously suggested that inflammatory cytokines including interleukin (IL)-17A are associated with Riemerella anatipestifer infection, which a harmful bacterial pathogen in ducks. Here, the expression profiles of membrane-associated γc (duγc-a) and soluble γc (duγc-b) in R. anatipestifer-stimulated splenic lymphocytes and macrophages, and in the spleens and livers of R. anatipestifer-infected ducks, were investigated. In vitro and in vivo results indicated that the expression levels of both forms of γc were increased, showing that marked increases were detected in the expression of the duγc-b form rather than the duγc-a form. Treatment with γc-specific siRNA downregulated mRNA expression of Th17-related cytokines, including IL-17A and IL-17F, in duck splenic macrophages stimulated with R. anatipestifer, whereas the expressions of interferon (IFN)-γ and IL-2 were enhanced. The results showed that the upregulation of γc, especially the duγc-b form, was associated with expression of Th17-related cytokines during R. anatipestifer infection.

Abstract
Riemerella anatipestifer, an important infectious bacterium affecting the duck industry, has 5-75% mortality, depending on strain virulence. We previously demonstrated that proinflammatory cytokines are involved in inflammation during, and regulating susceptibility to, R. anatipestifer infection. We investigated the effects of the anti-inflammatory compound berberine in duck splenic lymphocytes stimulated with killed R. anatipestifer, and in R. anatipestifer-infected ducks. IL-17A, IL-17F, and IL-1β transcripts were downregulated, and IFN-γ and IL-10 transcripts enhanced, in berberine-treated stimulated splenic lymphocytes, compared to stimulated untreated splenic lymphocytes. Similarly, IL-17A, IL-17F, IL-6, and IL-1β expressions were significantly reduced, and IFN-γ and IL-10 expressions significantly upregulated, in spleens and livers of R. anatipestifer-infected berberine-treated ducks, compared to infected untreated birds. Moreover, infected and treated birds showed increased survival rates and significantly decreased bacterial burdens compared to infected untreated birds, confirming that inflammatory cytokines are strongly associated with R. anatipestifer infection in ducks.

Abstract
Interleukin-8(IL-8)/CXCL8 is a CXC-family chemokine that attracts lymphocytes to sites of tissue damage and plays a role in the inflammatory response and wound healing. Chicken chemotactic and angiogenic factor was referred to as chCXCLi2 and has been studied as one of human CXCL8 homologue for more than 20 years. However, no monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that specifically detect chCXCLi2 have been developed. Here, we developed and characterized mouse mAbs against chCXCLi2 to define its immunological properties. Two mouse mAbs against chCXCLi2 were generated and confirmed to display specific binding with not only recombinants, but endogenous chCXCLi2 by Western blot analysis, ELISA, and immunocytochemistry. Inhibition of chCXCLi2-induced chemotactic activity on peripheral blood lymphocytes, proliferation of chicken macrophage cells and expression of alpha smooth-muscle actin in chicken embryonic fibroblast cells by antibodies indicate that these antibodies are capable of blocking chCXCLi2 bioactivity. These chCXCLi2 mAbs will be useful reagents for future investigations of inflammation in poultry.

Abstract
Background A wide range of response rates have been reported in HER2-positive gastric cancer (GC) patients treated with trastuzumab. Other HER2-targeted therapies for GC have yet to show efficacy in clinical trials. These findings raise question about the ability of standard HER2 diagnostics to accurately distinguish between GC patients who would and would not benefit from anti-HER2 therapies. Patients and methods GC patients (n = 237), including a subset from the Trastuzumab in GC (ToGA) trial were divided into three groups based on HER2 status and history of treatment with standard chemotherapy or chemotherapy plus trastuzumab. We applied mass spectrometry-based proteomic analysis to quantify HER2 protein expression in formalin-fixed tumor samples. Using HER2 expression as a continuous variable, we defined a predictive protein level cutoff to identify which patients would benefit from trastuzumab. We compared quantitated protein level with clinical outcome and HER2 status as determined by conventional HER2 diagnostics. Results Quantitative proteomics detected a 115-fold range of HER2 protein expression among patients diagnosed as HER2 positive by standard methods. A protein level of 1825 amol/µg was predicted to determine benefit from the addition of trastuzumab to chemotherapy. Trastuzumab treated patients with HER2 protein levels above this cutoff had twice the median overall survival (OS) of their counterparts below the cutoff (35.0 versus 17.5 months, P = 0.011). Conversely, trastuzumab-treated patients with HER2 levels below the cutoff had outcomes similar to HER2-positive patients treated with chemotherapy. (Progression-free survival = 7.0 versus 6.5 months: P = 0.504; OS = 17.5 versus 12.6 months: P = 0.520). HER2 levels were not prognostic for response to chemotherapy. Conclusions Proteomic analysis of HER2 expression demonstrated a quantitative cutoff that improves selection of GC patients for trastuzumab as compared with current diagnostic methods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Leptin and its receptor play a role in several disease processes such as pancreatitis and heart disease. However, their association with gallbladder mucocele (GBM) in dogs has not been reported. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES To evaluate differences in the expression of leptin and leptin receptor between dogs with and without GBM. ANIMALS Twenty-five healthy dogs, including 9 laboratory beagle dogs, and 22 client-owned dogs with GBM. METHODS Serum leptin concentration was determined in blood samples of all dogs by ELISA. Canine gallbladder samples were collected from 9 dogs with GBM that underwent surgery for therapeutic purposes and from 9 healthy laboratory beagle dogs as a normal control group. Samples were analyzed for leptin and leptin receptor mRNA by real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS Serum leptin concentration was significantly higher in dogs with GBM than in healthy dogs (medians of 7.03 and 2.18 ng/mL, respectively; P < .001). Patients with GBM that had undergone surgery had significantly higher serum leptin concentrations than those that had not (medians of 12.2 and 4.09 ng/mL, respectively; P = .001). However, no difference in serum leptin concentration was found between dogs with GBM with or without endocrinopathies. The mRNA expression levels of leptin and its receptor were significantly increased in the gallbladder tissues of dogs with GBM. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Dysregulation of leptin might be involved in the pathophysiology of GBM, and leptin concentrations might be associated with GBM severity.

Abstract
Although IL-17 cytokines play critical roles in host defense immunity, dysregulated expression of these cytokines is associated with inflammation and autoimmune diseases. Riemerella anatipestifer is the most important infectious bacterium in the duck industry. Interestingly, not all avian species are equally susceptible to R. anatipestifer infection. This paper reports the first description of mortality rate, bacterial burden, and expression profiles of immune-related genes between ducks and chickens infected with R. anatipestifer. Ducks exhibited increased susceptibility to R. anatipestifer infection compared to chickens, as determined by mortality rate and bacterial burden. Comparative expression analyses of immune-related genes in R. anatipestifer-infected tissues obtained from both species revealed that TLR3, TLR7, IL-2, IL-4, and IFN-γ transcript levels were higher in chickens, whereas TLR4 and IL-17A transcript levels were higher in ducks. Marked increases in expression of IL-17A and IL-6, but not TGF-β, were associated with Th17 cell differentiation in duck splenic lymphocytes, but not in chicken splenic lymphocytes, stimulated with R. anatipestifer. Moreover, upregulation of IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-17A mRNA expressions, but not TGF-β, was confirmed in the liver and spleen of ducks infected with R. anatipestifer, indicating that IL-17A is strongly associated with Riemerella infection in ducks.

Abstract
There is a critical need in animal agriculture to develop novel antimicrobials and alternative strategies that will help to reduce the use of antibiotics and address the challenges of antimicrobial resistance. High-throughput gene expression analysis is providing new tools that are enabling the discovery of host-derived antimicrobial peptides. Examples of gene-encoded natural antibiotics that have gained attention include antimicrobial peptides such as human granulysin and its multi-species homolog, namely NK-lysin, which provide a protective response against a broad range of microbes and are a principal component of innate immunity in vertebrates. Both granulysin and NK-lysin are localised in cytolytic granules in natural killer and cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Host-derived NK-lysins that were first described in mammals are also found in avian species, and they have been shown to have antimicrobial activities that could potentially be used to control important poultry pathogens. Morphological alterations observed following chicken NK-lysin binding to Eimeria sporozoites and Escherichia coli membranes indicate damage and disruption of cell membranes, suggesting that NK-lysin kills pathogenic protozoans and bacteria by direct interaction. Genotype analysis revealed that chicken NK-lysin peptides derived from certain alleles were more effective at killing pathogens than those derived from others, which could potentially affect susceptibility to diseases. Although the host-derived antimicrobial peptides described in this paper may not, by themselves, be able to replace the antibiotics currently used in animal production, their use as specific treatments based on their known mechanisms of action is showing promising results.

Abstract
Interleukin (IL)-17D is a proinflammatory cytokine with currently largely unknown biological functions. Here we provide the description of the sequence, bioactivity, and mRNA expression profile of duck IL-17D homologue. A full-length duck IL-17D (duIL-17D) cDNA with a 624-bp coding region was identified from the large intestine. duIL-17D shares approximately 94.7% identity with its chicken counterpart, which is also identified in this work. duIL-17D exhibits 62.6-68.4% and 52.1-53.1% identity with mammalian and piscine homologues. Recombinant duIL-17D promoted the expression of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, IL-8, and IL-1β in duck embryo fibroblast cells. Very low levels of duIL-17D transcript were observed in healthy lymphoid tissues, including bursa, thymus, and spleen, while duIL-17D expression was relatively high in the heart. The duIL-17D expression profiles were examined in mitogen-stimulated splenic lymphocytes, as well as tissues affected by Riemerella anatipestifer infection. The levels of duIL-17D were mostly upregulated in mitogen-activated splenic lymphocytes but downregulated in the liver and spleen of R. anatipestifer-infected ducks. These results provide new insights into the roles of IL-17D in host protective immune responses to Riemerella infection, which can therefore lead to further studies of its biological functions in different disease models of ducks and other avian species.

Abstract
AIM Many perianal fistulae in Crohn's disease do not respond to conventional surgical and medical management and recurrence rates are high. The study evaluated the safety and feasibility of allogeneic adipose-derived stem cells for the treatment of perianal fistula in Crohn's disease. METHOD A multicentre, open-label, dose escalation pilot study was performed. The first three patients (group 1) were administered 1 × 10(7) cells/ml based on the size of the fistula tract. Four weeks later, after which time this dose had been confirmed to be safe, the next three patients (group 2) were administered 3 × 10(7) cells/ml. The end-point was complete closure at 8 weeks after the injection. Patients who attended for the 8 week assessment were followed for an additional 6 months. RESULTS There were no adverse events of Grade 3 or 4 severity and no adverse events related to the treatment with allogeneic adipose-derived stem cells. Two patients in group 1 achieved complete closure of the fistula at month 4 and month 6, and one patient in group 2 achieved complete closure at 8 weeks. The closure was sustained up to month 8 in all three of those patients. CONCLUSION These data suggest that allogeneic adipose-derived stem cells may be a feasible treatment option for perianal fistula in Crohn's disease.

Abstract
The common cytokine receptor γ chain (γc) plays an essential role in regulating lymphoid homeostasis. In fact, alteration of this gene causes severe immunodeficiency in humans and animals. Although soluble γc (sγc) was identified in the late 1990s, much remains unknown about its production. This study describes various mechanisms underlying the generation of sγc isoforms in different species. Our data demonstrate that mouse γc and the avian ortholog γc-a did not generate sγc. Moreover, two mouse isoforms, CRA-a and mγc-b, encoded by transcripts lacking a transmembrane region by alternative splicing, did not yield sγc. However, in ducks, sγc was produced from a γc-b transcript lacking a transmembrane region by alternative splicing. In chickens, sγc was produced in normal cells and cell lines by proteolytic shedding of the γc-b isoform containing intron 5, which displayed a relatively high probability of proteolytic cleavage of the ectodomain. This shedding was suppressed by leupeptin, serine and cysteine protease inhibitor. Compared to the chicken ortholog γc-a, expression of γc-b mRNA was differentially regulated according to tissue type, developmental stage, and antigen stimulation. These data demonstrate several mechanisms for producing sγc and suggest a potential role for sγc in avian lymphoid homeostatic responses to environmental antigens.

Abstract
Plant homeodomain finger 2 (PHF2) has a role in epigenetic regulation of gene expression by demethylating H3K9-Me2. Several genome-wide studies have demonstrated that the chromosomal region including the PHF2 gene is often deleted in some cancers including colorectal cancer, and this finding encouraged us to investigate the tumor suppressive role of PHF2. As p53 is a critical tumor suppressor in colon cancer, we tested the possibility that PHF2 is an epigenetic regulator of p53. PHF2 was associated with p53, and thereby, promoted p53-driven gene expression in cancer cells under genotoxic stress. PHF2 converted the chromatin that is favorable for transcription by demethylating the repressive H3K9-Me2 mark. In an HCT116 xenograft model, PHF2 was found to be required for the anticancer effects of oxaliplatin and doxorubicin. In PHF2-deficient xenografts, p53 expression was profoundly induced by both drugs, but its downstream product p21 was not, suggesting that p53 cannot be activated in the absence of PHF2. To find clinical evidence about the role of PHF2, we analyzed the expressions of PHF2, p53 and p21 in human colon cancer tissues and adjacent normal tissues from patients. PHF2 was downregulated in cancer tissues and PHF2 correlated with p21 in cancers expressing functional p53. Colon and stomach cancer tissue arrays showed a positive correlation between PHF2 and p21 expressions. Informatics analyses using the Oncomine database also supported our notion that PHF2 is downregulated in colon and stomach cancers. On the basis of these findings, we propose that PHF2 acts as a tumor suppressor in association with p53 in cancer development and ensures p53-mediated cell death in response to chemotherapy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The requirements of nondepolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent during liver transplantation show conflicting results. We sought to evaluate the requirements according to the operative phase and find extrahepatic factors that influence neuromuscular blocking agent requirements. METHODS We enrolled 35 patients undergoing living donor liver transplantation. Continuous infusion of vecuronium was adjusted every 15 minutes for consistent neuromuscular blockade aimed at T1/Tc of 0.10 monitored with a neuromuscular transmission module. We compared the mean infusion dose in each phase, and investigated whether it is correlated with preoperative Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score, Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) score, graft-recipient weight ratio (GRWR), or time to recovery of first twitch response to train-of-four (TOF) stimulation. RESULTS There was a significant difference between vecuronium doses during each phase (P < .001): 0.48 ± 0.16 μg/kg/min, preanhepatic; 0.38 ± 0.14 μg/kg/min, anhepatic and 0.26 ± 0.07 μg/kg/min, neohepatic phase. There was a significant positive correlation between vecuronium infusion dose in the preanhepatic phase and CTP scores (P = .006, correlation coefficient = 0.465). There was also a significant negative correlation between the time to recovery of first twitch response of TOF stimulation and vecuronium infusion dose in the preanhepatic phase (P = .001, correlation coefficient = -0.546). The infusion dose during the preanhepatic phase was not associated with the MELD score, and that of neohapatic phase not with GRWR. CONCLUSIONS The vecuronium infusion dose requirement during the anhepatic decreased compared with that in the preanhepatic phase. It further decreased during the neohepatic phase compared with the previous phases. Vecuronium infusion dose reduction is suggested especially during the neohepatic phase for early extubation. The dose during the preanhepatic phase is suggested to be determined considering the CTP score and the time to recovery of the TOF response.

Abstract
The molecular and cellular mechanisms leading to immune protection against coccidiosis are complex and include multiple aspects of innate and adaptive immunities. Innate immunity is mediated by various subpopulations of immune cells that recognize pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) through their pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) leading to the secretion of soluble factors with diverse functions. Adaptive immunity, which is important in conferring protection against subsequent reinfections, involves subtypes of T and B lymphocytes that mediate antigen-specific immune responses. Recently, global gene expression microarray analysis has been used in an attempt to dissect this complex network of immune cells and molecules during avian coccidiosis. These new studies emphasized the uniqueness of the innate immune response to Eimeria infection, and directly led to the discovery of previously uncharacterized host genes and proteins whose expression levels were modulated following parasite infection. Among these is the IL-17 family of cytokines. This review highlights recent progress in IL-17 research in the context of host immunity to avian coccidiosis.

Abstract
We evaluated the effects of a prolonged inspiratory time on gas exchange in subjects undergoing one-lung ventilation for thoracic surgery. One hundred patients were randomly assigned to Group I:E = 1:2 or Group I:E = 1:1. Arterial blood gas analysis and respiratory mechanics measurements were performed 10 min after anaesthesia induction, 30 and 60 min after initiation of one-lung ventilation, and 15 min after restoration of conventional two-lung ventilation. The mean (SD) ratio of the partial pressure of arterial oxygen to fraction of inspired oxygen after 60 min of one-lung ventilation was significantly lower in Group I:E = 1:2 compared with Group I:E = 1:1 (27.7 (13.2) kPa vs 35.2 (22.1) kPa, respectively, p = 0.043). Mean (SD) physiological dead space-to-tidal volume ratio after 60 min of one-lung ventilation was significantly higher in Group I:E = 1:2 compared with Group I:E = 1:1 (0.46 (0.04) vs 0.43 (0.04), respectively, p = 0.008). Median (IQR [range]) peak inspiratory pressure was higher in Group I:E = 1:2 compared with Group I:E = 1:1 after 60 min of one-lung ventilation (23 (22-25 [18-29]) cmH2O vs 20 (18-21 [16-27]) cmH2O, respectively, p < 0.001) and median (IQR [range]) mean airway pressure was lower in Group I:E = 1:2 compared with Group I:E = 1:1 (10 (8-11 [5-15]) cmH2O vs 11 (10-13 [5-16]) cmH2O, respectively, p < 0.001). We conclude that, compared with an I:E ratio of 1:2, an I:E ratio of 1:1 resulted in a modest improvement in oxygenation and decreased shunt fraction during one-lung ventilation.

Abstract
We report a very rare case of isolated multiple pulmonary arterial calcification with severe bilateral peripheral pulmonary arterial stenosis diagnosed in utero. Despite treatment with bisphosphonate for 6 months, systolic right ventricular pressure increased persistently and surpassed left ventricular pressure. After successful bilateral pulmonary arterioplasty at 13 months of age, the patient showed decreased systolic right ventricular pressure with normal interventricular septal configuration. This is the first case report for an isolated pulmonary artery calcification without other arterial calcification proven by non-contrast computed tomography of a living patient.
