Abstract
We study a patient with the human papilloma virus (HPV)-2-driven "tree-man" phenotype and two relatives with unusually severe HPV4-driven warts. The giant horns form an HPV-2-driven multifocal benign epithelial tumor overexpressing viral oncogenes in the epidermis basal layer. The patients are unexpectedly homozygous for a private CD28 variant. They have no detectable CD28 on their T cells, with the exception of a small contingent of revertant memory CD4+ T cells. T cell development is barely affected, and T cells respond to CD3 and CD2, but not CD28, costimulation. Although the patients do not display HPV-2- and HPV-4-reactive CD4+ T cells in vitro, they make antibodies specific for both viruses in vivo. CD28-deficient mice are susceptible to cutaneous infections with the mouse papillomavirus MmuPV1. The control of HPV-2 and HPV-4 in keratinocytes is dependent on the T cell CD28 co-activation pathway. Surprisingly, human CD28-dependent T cell responses are largely redundant for protective immunity.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6 and 11 are the etiological agents of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP). We examined the prevalence and distribution of HPVs 6 and 11 genetic variants in juvenile onset (JORRP) and adult onset (AORRP) laryngeal papillomas. Cases of JORRP and AORRP were collected, retrospectively. HPV detection and genotyping were accessed by polymerase chain reaction-sequencing in 67 RRP samples. Overall, the most prevalent HPV-6 variants were from B1 (55.8%) and B3 (27.9%) sublineages, whereas among HPV-11 positive samples A2 (62.5%) variants were predominant. A higher prevalence of HPV-6 B1 was observed in JORRP (83.3% B1 and 16.7% B3), compared with AORRP cases (58.3% B1 and 41.7% B3). HPV-11 A2 variants were more prevalent both in JORRP (57.2%) and in AORRP cases (70.0%). Nevertheless, with the exception that HPV-6 B1 were significantly less likely to recur, there was a lack of association between any particular HPVs 6 or 11 variant and clinicopathological features. Our data do not support an association between HPVs 6 and 11 variability and RRP.

Abstract
Pathogen-induced cancers account for 15% of human tumors and are a growing concern for endangered wildlife. Fibropapillomatosis is an expanding virally and environmentally co-induced sea turtle tumor epizootic. Chelonid herpesvirus 5 (ChHV5) is implicated as a causative virus, but its transmission method and specific role in oncogenesis and progression is unclear. We applied environmental (e)DNA-based viral monitoring to assess viral shedding as a direct means of transmission, and the relationship between tumor burden, surgical resection and ChHV5 shedding. To elucidate the abundance and transcriptional status of ChHV5 across early, established, regrowth and internal tumors we conducted genomics and transcriptomics. We determined that ChHV5 is shed into the water column, representing a likely transmission route, and revealed novel temporal shedding dynamics and tumor burden correlations. ChHV5 was more abundant in the water column than in marine leeches. We also revealed that ChHV5 is latent in fibropapillomatosis, including early stage, regrowth and internal tumors; higher viral transcription is not indicative of poor patient outcome, and high ChHV5 loads predominantly arise from latent virus. These results expand our knowledge of the cellular and shedding dynamics of ChHV5 and can provide insights into temporal transmission dynamics and viral oncogenesis not readily investigable in tumors of terrestrial species.

Abstract
Numerous raised plaques were observed on the feet of a red-billed gull (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae scopulinus) that had been found dead. The plaques consisted of thickened epidermis with cell changes indicative of papillomavirus (PV) infection prominent within affected areas. Evidence suggesting progression to neoplasia was visible in one lesion. A DNA sequence that was most similar, but only 68.3% identical, to duck PV type 3 was amplified from the papillomas, suggesting a novel PV type. Lesions containing PV DNA have only previously been reported in three avian species. This is the first evidence that PVs could cause neoplasia in birds.

Abstract
CONTEXT The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic raised concerns about the safety of laparoscopy due to the risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) diffusion in surgical smoke. Although no case of SARS-CoV-2 contagion related to surgical smoke has been reported, several international surgical societies recommended caution or even discouraged the use of a laparoscopic approach. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the risk of virus spread due to surgical smoke during surgical procedures. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION We searched PubMed and Scopus for eligible studies, including clinical and preclinical studies assessing the presence of any virus in the surgical smoke from any surgical procedure or experimental model. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS We identified 24 studies. No study was found investigating SARS-CoV-2 or any other coronavirus. About other viruses, hepatitis B virus was identified in the surgical smoke collected during different laparoscopic surgeries (colorectal resections, gastrectomies, and hepatic wedge resections). Other clinical studies suggested a consistent risk of transmission for human papillomavirus (HPV) in the surgical treatments of HPV-related disease (mainly genital warts, laryngeal papillomas, or cutaneous lesions). Preclinical studies showed conflicting results, but HPV was shown to have a high risk of transmission. CONCLUSIONS Although all the available data come from different viruses, considering that the SARS-CoV-2 virus has been shown in blood and stools, the theoretical risk of virus diffusion through surgical smoke cannot be excluded. Specific clinical studies are needed to understand the effective presence of the virus in the surgical smoke of different surgical procedures and its concentration. Meanwhile, adoption of all the required protective strategies, including preoperative patient nasopharyngeal swab for COVID-19, seems mandatory. PATIENT SUMMARY In this systematic review, we looked at the risk of virus spread from surgical smoke exposure during surgery. Although no study was found investigating severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) or any other coronavirus, we found that the theoretical risk of virus diffusion through surgical smoke cannot be excluded.

Abstract
Papillomaviruses (PVs) are an extremely large group of viruses that cause skin and mucosa infections in humans and various animals. In roe deer and red deer, most PVs belong to the Deltapapillomavirus genus and cause neoplastic changes that are generally described as fibropapillomas. Despite the wide distribution of roe and red deer throughout Europe and beyond, the data in the scientific literature regarding the widespread distribution of PVs and the genetic variability of PV genomes in these species are rather scarce. This study describes cutaneous fibropapillomatosis cases in roe and red deer with clinical manifestations that are typical of infections with PVs. In all cases, the presence of PV DNA was confirmed using PCR, followed by Sanger sequencing of the partial L1 gene. The complete PV genomes were determined in all the investigated samples using next-generation sequencing technology, revealing infections of roe deer with the CcaPV1-type and red deer with the CePV1v-type variant. A comparison of the complete CcaPV1-type and CePV1v-type variant genome sequences reported here with already available complete genome sequences in GenBank revealed their great genetic stability across time and space.

Abstract
Sinonasal papillomas are rare, usually benign tumors arising from the Schneiderian membrane. Human papillomaviruses (HPV) can infect differentiating skin and mucosal cells and can induce uncontrolled growth patterns. Their effect on development of sinonasal papillomas has been discussed controversially in recent years. A monocentric, retrospective study was conducted to investigate histopathologic features of sinonasal papillomas and to establish an assay for HPV detection and genotyping in papillomas. Schneiderian papillomas are divided into three groups according to histopathologic features: the largest group are inverted papillomas, followed by fungiform (exophytic) and oncocytic papillomas. HPV screening was performed with high sensitivity by PCR employing My09/11 and 125 consensus primers. Adding a third primer pair (GP5+/GP6+) d increase sensitivity. Reverse hybridization microarrays achieved HPV genotyping better than pyrosequencing in our setting. HPV infection rates were higher in papillomas (46.7%) than infection rates reported for healthy mucosa (up to 13%). P16(INK4a) was not a reliable surrogate marker for HPV infection in sinonasal papillomas. Data from our study endorses the hypothesis that HPV infection promotes formation of sinonasal papillomas. However, apart from HPV genotypes that are frequently found in e.g. anogenital lesions (such as 6, 11, or 16), tissue samples of sinonasal papillomas also displayed infection with "rare" HPV types (such as 58, 42, 83, or 91).

Abstract
Squamous papillomas (SPs) of the head and neck are generally regarded as a human papillomavirus (HPV)-driven process, but reported rates of HPV detection vary dramatically. Moreover, they are generally considered a benign condition, but the detection of high risk HPV types is commonly reported. This latter finding is particularly disturbing to clinicians and their patients given the alarming rise of HPV-associated head and neck cancer. The capriciousness of HPV detection reflects in large part differences in methodologies. The purpose of this study was to review an institutional experience using a state of the art detection method to determine the presence, type and anatomic distribution of HPV in head and neck SPs. The surgical pathology files of the Mount Sinai Hospital were reviewed for all SPs that had undergone HPV testing between 2012 and 2018. HPV screening was performed on tissue blocks with real-time PCR using primers designed to target the L1 region of low and high-risk HPV types. Genotyping was performed on HPV positive cases. HPV detection was repeated for cases that were originally reported to be positive for high risk HPV. 134 cases had undergone HPV analysis. Of the 131 with sufficient cellular material, 2 were excluded because the HPV testing yielded inconclusive results. The remaining 129 cases were the basis of this study. Thirty-eight cases (29%) were HPV positive and 91 (71%) were negative. The most common genotype was HPV 6 (n = 27, 71%), followed by HPV 11 (n = 10, 26%). One case (1%) was HPV positive but the genotype could not be determined. Of the HPV negative cases, 3 were originally reported as HPV 16 positive but found to be HPV negative on re-review and repeat testing. SPs arising in the larynx were more likely to harbor HPV than those arising in the oral cavity and oropharynx (64% vs. 10%, p < 0.00001). Similarly, recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) were much more likely to be HPV positive than solitary SPs (71% vs. 10%, p < 0.00001). Almost a third of head and neck SPs harbor HPV, but incidence is highly dependent on anatomic site. Those arising in the larynx are more prone to be HPV-driven than those arising in the oral cavity and oropharynx, particularly when occurring in the setting of RRP. High risk HPV could not be confirmed in any of the cases. Routine HPV testing as a strategy to unmask potentially malignant lesions harboring high risk HPV is not likely to be useful.

Abstract
Fibropapillomatosis is a panzootic and chronic disease among Chelonia mydas-usually associated with anthropogenic impacts. This study contributes towards understanding fibropapillomatosis implications for C. mydas populations as a reflector of environmental quality, via prevalence and histological, molecular and blood analyses at a World Heritage site in southern Brazil. Sixty-three juvenile C. mydas (31.3-54.5 cm curved carapace length-CCL) were sampled during two years. Eighteen specimens (~ 29%) had tumours (which were biopsied), while 45 had none. Degenerative changes in the epidermis and Chelonid alphaherpesvirus 5 DNA detection with three variants support a herpesvirus infection. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that variants A and B were similar to a herpesvirus lineage from the Atlantic group, but variant C was similar to a herpesvirus from the eastern Pacific lineage and represents the first published case for marine turtles off Brazil. Significantly lower levels of seven blood parameters, but greater numbers of eosinophils, were observed in tumour-afflicted animals. These observations were attributed to metabolism efficiencies and/or differences in diet associated with temporal-recruitment bias and disease development, and greater non-specific immune stimulation. While most animals had adequate body condition independent of disease, longer-term studies are required to elucidate any protracted population effects.

Abstract
PURPOSE Laryngeal papillomatosis is the most common benign tumor of the larynx of children. It is characterized by the development of exophytic proliferative lesions in the mucosa of the airways. Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been recognized as a causal agent among which HPV types 6 and 11 are the most frequently implicated. This disease affects the vocal cords and other important functions of the child. The difficulty of treatment is related to the high recurrence of papilloma growth after surgical removal. The objective of this study was to describe the implication of HPV6 and HPV11 in cases of laryngeal papillomatosis histologically confirmed in Ouagadougou. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was a descriptive cross-sectional study based on histologically diagnosed archival tissue; obtained in the last ten years (2007 to 2017) in the anatomy and cyto-pathology laboratories in Burkina Faso. These fixed and paraffin-embedded tissues were deparaffinized with xylene before HPV DNA extraction; then HPV6 and HPV 11 were identified by real-time multiplex PCR. RESULTS The prevalence of low-risk HPV infection (HPV-LR) was 54.84% in histologically confirmed laryngeal papillomatosis in Ouagadougou. Among the HPV-LR positive samples, HPV6 and HPV11 genotype prevalence's were respectively 41.17% and 35.3% while the HPV6 / HPV11 co-infection was 23.53%. CONCLUSIONS The results show the implication of HPV6 and HPV11 in laryngeal papillomatosis in Burkina Faso with a high prevalence.

Abstract
Our recent Communications Biology research article revealed the genomic drivers and therapeutic vulnerabilities of sea turtle fibropapillomatosis tumors. Fibropapillomatosis is a debilitating tumorous disease afflicting populations of green sea turtles globally. While a virus is involved in the development of this disease, it is increasingly understood that the key trigger is linked to anthropogenic disturbances of the environment. The specific environmental co-trigger(s) has yet to be functionally confirmed. Here we outline the next steps required to advance our understanding of this enigmatic disease, to enable us to more effectively clinically combat it and to ultimately tackle its environmental co-trigger to halt and hopefully reverse the spread of fibropapillomatosis.

Abstract
The etiology of papilloma formation is multifactorial. There is a strong association between human papillomavirus (HPV) and the development of these conjunctival lesions. HPV is tumorigenic and commonly produces benign tumors with low malignant potential. Papillomas rarely go through malignant transformation. MATERIAL AND METHODS Retrospective study of patients with a diagnosis of conjunctival papilloma or squamous cell carcinoma. RESULTS From a collection of 125 patients with conjunctival non-pigmented tumours in the period from 2007 to 2017, in 119 (95.2%) patients histological examination confirmed papilloma and in 6 (4.8%) patients it confirmed carcinoma. Of the total number of patients, 39 were women (31.2%) and 86 men (68.8%). The mean age of patients was 68.4 years (range 20-94 years). Localization of lesions: bulbar conjunctiva - 65 (52.0%), upper eyelid tarsal conjunctiva + fornix - 6 (4.8%), lower eyelid + fornix - 27 (21.6%), caruncle - 20 (16.0%) and plica semilunaris - 7 (5.6%) patients. In the patient cohort we recorded 2 papillomas that were transformed into squamous cell carcinoma. HPV16 was positive in these patients, the carcinomas were from the area of the bulbar conjunctiva, and the surgical solution was associated with the perioperative administration of Mitomycin C. In one case, the inverted papilloma developed into orbital carcinoma within 2 years of primary excision, and the patient underwent radical surgical procedure (partial exenteration of the orbit) followed by radiotherapy. CONCLUSION Transformation of the papilloma into the carcinoma is rare, but it must always be taken into consideration in case of a recurrence of the disease. HPV can infect the conjunctiva. The ophthalmologist, in collaboration with a pathologist, may recommend appropriate laboratory tests to confirm the diagnosis. Long-term outpatient follow-up of patients after excision of the conjunctival papilloma is also necessary. Key words: epibulbar tumors, conjunctival tumors, papilloma, carcinoma.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis is characterized by wart-like lesions of the upper airway and is most frequently caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). The disease has significant impact on quality of life due to potential airway obstruction, dysphonia and the need for serial surgeries. The main objective of this study was to describe patient characteristics and long-term follow-up data in a Danish cohort with the disease. METHODS The study was a longitudinal retrospective cohort-study using data from electronic medical records and a pathology database. RESULTS A total of 61 adult and four juvenile patients were identified. The male-to-female ratio was 2.4. In the adult population, the mean age at onset was 45 years. The median number of surgeries was four (interquartile range: 2.8). The mean follow-up time was 8.7 years (range: 7 days-30 years). Three cases of malignant transformation were observed. In the juvenile population, the mean age of onset was 8.5 years (range: 3-12 years). The mean follow-up time was 11.5 years (range: 2-23 years), and the number of surgeries per year at risk was one/year. CO2-laser and microdebrider were the surgical techniques usually employed. 43% of histopathologic analyses could detect HPV infection (subtype 6 or 11). CONCLUSIONS More males than females suffer from respiratory papillomatosis; age of onset was either in childhood or in mid-life. Use of CO2-laser or microdebrider was the preferred surgical approach in this cohort. FUNDING none. TRIAL REGISTRATION not relevant.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Conflicting data exist regarding the contribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) to the development of head and neck squamous cell papillomas. METHODS Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded papillomas were tested for 28 mucosal and 79 cutaneous HPVs using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based methods. RESULTS Eighty-three papillomas (43 oropharyngeal, 31 oral, 6 laryngeal, and 3 nasopharyngeal) were analyzed. Twenty-four samples (28.9%) harbored mucosal HPVs: 3 oropharyngeal (6.9%), 15 oral (48.3%), 4 laryngeal (66.7%), and 2 nasopharyngeal papillomas (66.7%). Eighty-one cases were also tested for cutaneous HPVs, detected in 16 lesions (19.7%): 11 (13.5%) harbored only cutaneous types, and 5 (6.2%) were positive for both cutaneous and mucosal HPVs. Among these 81 cases, prevalence of mucosal and/or cutaneous HPV infection was 43.2%. CONCLUSION HPV DNA detection in a fraction of head and neck papillomas supports the role of HPV in their development. Abstract
Multifocal epithelial hyperplasia is a rare disease associated with human papilloma virus types 13 and 32. Diagnosis is based on clinical and histopathological findings, and most lesions are asymptomatic and regress spontaneously with time. The purpose of this paper is to describe a five-year-old girl who presented with multiple intraoral lesions on the buccal mucosa and tongue, which regressed spontaneously in 15 months.

Abstract
Fibropapillomatosis (FP) is characterized by multiple fibroepithelial tumors in all parts of the skin and has been reported in sea turtles worldwide. Clinically infected individuals are often emaciated and anemic. In Mexico, however, there are few records of this disease. In this study of green turtles Chelonia mydas in Laguna San Ignacio in Baja California Sur (BCS), we noted one juvenile with multifocal fibropapilloma lesions on the external upper surface of its eyes and hind flippers. Light microscopy revealed hyperkeratosis, epidermal hyperplasia, dermal papillary projections, and fibroblast proliferation. Electron microscopy revealed viral particles. Biopsies of normal skin were done to determine the origin of the turtle through genetic analysis. Its mitochondrial DNA matched that of a haplotype (CMP2) from a Hawaiian green turtle population. Finding FP in a turtle captured in BCS elucidates the need for further monitoring along the west coast of Mexico. Further investigation should include testing tumors to detect and characterize any chelonid herpesviruses and explore any association with FP and other diseases that pose a health risk to other sea turtle species. Abstract
A co-infection comprising to at least seven papillomavirus (PV) types was detected by next generation sequencing (NGS) of randomly primed rolling circle amplification (RCA) products of a bovine (Bos taurus) papilloma lesion from the Brazilian Amazon region. Six putative new PV types that could not be detected by commonly used PCR protocols were identified. Their overall L1 nucleotide identities were less than 90% compared to described PV species and types. L1 nucleotide BLAST sequence hits showed that each new type was related to Beta, Gamma, Dyokappa, Dyoeta, and Xipapillomavirus, as well as two likely new unclassified genera. Our results show that the employment of NGS is relevant to the detection and characterization of distantly related PV and is of major importance in co-infection studies. This knowledge will help us understand the biology and pathogenesis of PV, as well as contribute to disease control. Moreover, we can also conclude that there are many unknown circulating PVs.

Abstract
Squamous papillomas are common lesions occurring on skin, oral and nasal mucosa and male and female genital organs. Oral squamous cell papilloma (OSP) is a benign proliferation of the stratified squamous epithelium and is generally believed to be caused by Human Papilloma Viruses (HPV). It constitutes around 2.5% of all oral verruco-papillary lesions. We here, report a case of palatal OSP occurring in a 55-year-old male. The aetiological, clinical, diagnostic and treatment aspects of OSP are discussed here.

Abstract
Fibropapillomatosis (FP) is a multifactorial disease that affects all species of marine turtles, including green turtles Chelonia mydas (Linnaeus, 1758). It is characterised by the development of internal or external tumours that, depending on their locations and sizes, may intensely impact the health condition of sea turtles. The goal of this study was to characterise the disease in C. mydas found in a foraging area in southeastern Brazil, evaluate the prevalence in this region, and correlate presence and absence, size, body distribution, number of tumours, and disease severity with biometric variables of the captured green turtles. Between 2008 and 2014, the prevalence rate of FP was 43.09%, out of 246 green turtles. The size of the animals with FP was relatively greater than animals without tumours, and the prevalence of FP increased with animal size, peaking in the 60-80 cm size class. From 2013 to 2014, gross evaluation of fibropapillomas was performed. The number of tumours per turtle ranged from 1 to 158. The size of tumours ranged from <1 cm (Size A) to >10 cm (Size D); Size A tumours and turtles slightly affected by the disease (Score 1) predominated. Tumour progression (72.1%) and regression (32.8%) were seen in some recaptured individuals (n = 61). Moreover, 24.6% of these turtles showed both progressions and regressions of tumours.

Abstract
Objectives: A prospective study was performed to assess the intermediate and long-term efficacy of intralesional cidofovir therapy associated with surgical excision in laryngeal papillomatosis in adults. Methods: Endoscopy with intralesional injection of cidofovir 5 mg/mL was performed 3 times at 4-week intervals. The concentration was later increased to 7.5 mg/mL and the interval between injections shortened to 2 weeks. Further treatment was performed at 3 or 6 months, depending on the evolution of the papillomas. After complete remission, the treatment was stopped and the patients were reviewed every 6 months. Results: Nineteen patients completed the protocol, with a mean of 4.5 injections each. Complete remission was obtained in 17 cases (89%) after a mean of 3.8 procedures. Remission was stable after a mean follow-up of 24 months (range, 8 to 57 months). With higher cidofovir concentrations at shorter intervals, patients needed fewer injections to achieve remission (mean, 2.1 versus 4.7 injections). Conclusions: The effectiveness of intralesional cidofovir therapy in adult-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis was impressive. Once obtained, complete remission was stable on intermediate or long-term follow-up. The concentration and the interval between injections seemed to influence the number of injections necessary to achieve remission.

Abstract
Objectives: We assessed the intermediate-term and long-term efficacy of intralesional injection of cidofovir used with surgical excision in juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. Methods: The protocol was revised during the study, from endoscopy at 4-week intervals with intralesional injection of cidofovir at 5 mg/mL, to a 2-week interval and a 7.5-mg/mL dosage. Partial surgical excision of hypertrophic papillomas was performed before the initiation of injection. Further injections at 4-week (or 2-week) intervals were performed until complete remission. Results: Sixteen patients received a mean 8.9 injections. Complete remission was obtained in 12 patients (75%) after a mean 7.2 endoscopic treatments. Remission was stable at a mean 33.6 months' follow-up. Five of these 12 patients received 5.2 injections and remained disease-free at a mean 39.3 months' follow-up. Seven of the 12 had 1 relapse; they needed complementary treatment to become disease-free, and remained so thereafter over a mean 27.3 months' follow-up. The other 4 of the 16 patients (25%) continued to present active disease. Conclusions: Active endoscopic treatment until complete remission led to a higher-than-expected complete remission rate on intermediate-term to long-term follow-up, with or without relapse. Transient relapse was associated with a long delay in initiating cidofovir treatment.

Abstract
Twenty-three feline cutaneous fibropapillomas with histologic features similar to equine sarcoids were diagnosed. They were characterized by dermal fibroblastic proliferation with overlying, often ulcerated hyperplastic epidermis. Electron microscopic findings supported the fibroblastic nature of the neoplastic cells. The 23 tumors came from 20 cats and were submitted from veterinary clinics in Wisconsin and Minnesota. These tumors occurred most commonly in young cats and were found primarily on the head, neck, and digits. Fifteen of the 17 cats for which breed was reported were domestic shorthair cats. In 11/20 cases, there was confirmed exposure to cattle. Local recurrence of the tumor following surgical excision was reported in 7 of the 18 cats for which follow-up information was available. Metastasis was not documented in any of the cases. Two of the 19 tumors tested by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) had no amplifiable DNA. The remaining 17 were positive for papillomavirus by PCR. No papillomavirus DNA was detected in three other feline skin tumors (cutaneous mast cell tumor, malignant lymphoma, and fibrosarcoma) that served as controls. This is the first report of detection of papillomavirus in feline tumors that have clinicopathologic features similar to equine sarcoids.

Abstract
This paper uses a short 'Christmas fairy-story for oncologists' sent by Christopher Andrewes with a 1935 letter to Peyton Rous as the centrepiece of a reflection on the state of knowledge and speculation about the viral aetiology of cancer in the 1930s. Although explicitly not intended for public circulation at the time, the fairy-story merits publication for its significance in the history of ideas about viruses, which are taken for granted today. Andrewes and Rous were prominent members of the international medical research community and yet faced strong resistance to their theory that viruses could cause such tumours as chicken sarcomas and rabbit papillomas. By looking at exchanges between these men among themselves and other proponents of their theories and with their oncologist detractors, we highlight an episode in the behind-the-scenes workings of medical science and show how informal correspondence helped keep alive a vital but then heterodox idea about the role of viruses in causing cancer.

Abstract
Human papillomaviruses are causally associated with 5% of human cancers. The recent discovery of a papillomavirus (MmuPV1) that infects laboratory mice provides unique opportunities to study the life cycle and pathogenesis of papillomaviruses in the context of a genetically manipulatable host organism. To date, MmuPV1-induced disease has been found largely to be restricted to severely immunodeficient strains of mice. In this study, we report that ultraviolet radiation (UVR), specifically UVB spectra, causes wild-type strains of mice to become highly susceptible to MmuPV1-induced disease. MmuPV1-infected mice treated with UVB develop warts that progress to squamous cell carcinoma. Our studies further indicate that UVB induces systemic immunosuppression in mice that correlates with susceptibility to MmuPV1-associated disease. These findings provide new insight into how MmuPV1 can be used to study the life cycle of papillomaviruses and their role in carcinogenesis, the role of host immunity in controlling papillomavirus-associated pathogenesis, and a basis for understanding in part the role of UVR in promoting HPV infection in humans.

Abstract
Infection by mouse papillomavirus (PV), MmuPV1, of T cell-deficient, B6.Cg-Foxn1(nu)/J nude mice revealed that four, distinct squamous papilloma phenotypes developed simultaneously after infection of experimental mice. Papillomas appeared on the muzzle, vagina, and tail at or about day 42days post-inoculation. The dorsal skin developed papillomas and hair follicle tumors (trichoblastomas) as early as 26days after infection. Passive transfer of hyperimmune sera from normal congenic mice immunized with MmuPV1 virus-like particles (VLPs) to T cell-deficient strains of mice prevented infection by virions of experimental mice. This study provides further evidence that T cell deficiency is critical for tumor formation by MmuPV1 infection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the efficacy of submucosal resection by CO2 laser in the treatment of recurrent laryngeal papilloma and the effect on prognosis. METHOD A total of 11 patients diagnosed as recurrent laryngeal papilloma were included in this review. Papilloma was marked before operation and checked under fibro-laryngoscope. Papilloma was resected completely including the submucosal tissure with CO2 laser or microequipment. In widespread papilloma, false membrane in raw surface were cleared 7-10 days after operation. Surgical specimens (including membrane) were detected by routine pathology, HPV typing and immunohistochemical pathologic examination. The patients were checked once a month in the first 3 months after operation, and then once for every 3 months. Once the hoarseness and other symptoms aggravated or the disease was recurrent, the patients were treated immediately. RESULT HPV viral DNA was found in 10/11 cases, with HPV11 (7/11 cases) and HPV6 (3/11 cases). Cases with regards to follow-up, from 6 months to 1 year, 3 cases were followed up 1 year after operation, without recurrence. Five patients including 2 children were followed up 6 to 12 months after operation, without recurrence. Two children underwent 2 or 3 operations, were followed-up more than 6 months withouting recurrence. CONCLUSION Papilloma submucosal resection could decrease postoperative recurrence and is worth to be further investigated.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the correlation of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) and precancerous lesion with HPV infection subtypes and possible clinical relationship. METHOD Eighty-three cases in paraffin embedded tissues were detected with thirty seven HPV subtypes by flow-through hybridization and gene chip (HybriMax), including 31 cases of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, 52 cases of precancerous lesions (29 cases of vocal cord leukoplakia and 23 cases of laryngeal papilloma), and 36 cases of vocal cord polyp as normal vocal mucosa were used as control. RESULT The total positive rate of HPV was 19.4% in the group of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (6/31), 0 in vocal cord leukoplakia, 65.2% in laryngeal papilloma (15/23), and the control group were all negative, HPV virus subtype of HPV-positive laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma were all high-risk HPV16; and there were 6 HPV virus subtypes in laryngeal papilloma (8: HPV6,4: HPV52, 1: HPV11, 1: HPV18, 2: HPV45, 3: HPV16), individual mixing two or more subtypes infection. HPV infection of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and precancerous lesions has no statistically significant difference according to gender, high low-risk subtypes. CONCLUSION HPV infection related to laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and precancerous lesions, but no significant correlation with the subtype distribution of high and low risk; HPV detection is making positive sense to clinical diagnosis of laryngeal carcinoma and precancerous lesions as well as the development of specific HPV subtype vaccine.

Abstract
Authors present a case report of a 2-year-old boy with recurrent laryngeal papillomatosis with oesophageal involvement due to human papilloma virus types 6 and 11, who needed surgical treatment every 4-6 weeks, altogether 11 times. After detailed immunological evaluation of basic immunological parameters, and in vitro detection of good responses to routine childhood immunization, a therapeutic vaccination has been decided with a 4-valent HPV vaccine. Following the third vaccine dose both laryngeal and oesophageal lesions disappeared completely, and for 2 years follow-up no papillomas could be detected. Vaccination could be a promising method in the treatment of RRP in children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to analyze the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features of oral papillomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS Biopsies of oral papillomas analyzed in the laboratory between 1996-2012 were extracted from the database and used to conduct this retrospective review. The following clinical data were extracted: sex, age, location, clinical appearance, time of evolution, recurrence and first clinical diagnosis. Immunohistochemical analysis for Human Papillomavirus (HPV)and histological evaluation of the lesions were performed. RESULTS A total of 205 papillomas were identified in 197 patients (♂=110, ♀ = 87; mean age = 48.4 ± 17.9 years).The majority of the lesions (n = 47) occurred on the soft palate (23%). The border of the tongue was the second most common site (n = 20, 9.8%). Lesions were more common in males than in females (ratio = 1.26:1). Statistical analysis did not show any correlation between the assessed variables. Clinically, papillomas were predominantly described by the practitioners as small nodules, with a papillary surface (98.1%) and pedunculated attachment(83.1%). Data supported a low recurrence (2.0%) and multiplicity (2.0%). Evolution time varied from a few weeks to several years. Most frequent misdiagnosis was condyloma. Immunohistochemistry rarely showed HPV presence (9.3%). Microscopically, lesions were very often keratinized (93.2%) and showed chronic inflammatory cells (68.8%). CONCLUSIONS In this series papillomas showed a slight male predilection and occurred mostly in the sixth decade of life. Histologically, they were usually keratotic and exhibited variable inflammation. HPV virus was rarely detected by immunohistochemistry. No statistical correlation could be established between clinicopathological features.

Abstract
Fibropapillomatosis (FP) is a benign neoplasia that affects physiological functions of sea turtles and may lead to death. High prevalence of FP in sea turtle populations has prompted several research groups to study the disease and the associated herpesvirus, chelonid herpesvirus 5 (ChHV5). The present study detected and quantified ChHV5 in 153 fibropapilloma samples collected from green turtles Chelonia mydas on the Brazilian coast between 2009 and 2010 to characterize the relationship between viral load and tumor characteristics. Of the tumor samples collected, 73 and 87% were positive for ChHV5 in conventional PCR and real-time PCR, respectively, and viral loads ranged between 1 and 118.62 copies cell⁻¹. Thirty-three percent of turtles were mildly, 28% were moderately and 39% were severely affected with FP. Skin samples were used as negative control. High viral loads correlated positively with increasing FP severity in turtles sampled on the Brazilian coast and with samples from turtles found dead in the states of São Paulo and Bahia. Six viral variants were detected in tumor samples, 4 of which were similar to the Atlantic phylogenetic group. Two variants were similar to the western Atlantic/eastern Caribbean phylogenetic group. Co-infection in turtles with more than one variant was observed in the states of São Paulo and Bahia.

Abstract
The Chelonid fibropapilloma-associated herpesvirus (CFPHV) is hypothesized to be the causative agent of fibropapillomatosis, a neoplastic disease in sea turtles, given its consistent detection by PCR in fibropapilloma tumours. CFPHV has also been detected recently by PCR in tissue samples from clinically healthy (non exhibiting fibropapilloma tumours) turtles, thus representing presumably latent infections of the pathogen. Given that template copy numbers of viruses in latent infections can be very low, extremely sensitive PCR assays are needed to optimize detection efficiency. In this study, efficiency of several PCR assays designed for CFPHV detection is explored and compared to a method published previously. The results show that adoption of a triplet set of singleplex PCR assays outperforms other methods, with an approximately 3-fold increase in detection success in comparison to the standard assay. Thus, a new assay for the detection of CFPHV DNA markers is presented, and adoption of its methodology is recommended in future CFPHV screens among sea turtles.

Abstract
Congo African Grey Parrots (GP; Psittacus erithacus erithacus) from four different avicultures, presented in the Clinic for Exotic Pets, Reptiles and Birds, University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Foundation, showed choanal papillomas or hyperemia of the cloacal mucosa. Histologically, the mucosal choanal proliferations were diagnosed as exophytic papillomas and a mild hyperplasia of the cloacal mucosa with lympho-histiocytic inflammation with no visible inclusion bodies was found. Herpesvirus genome was detected by nested PCR in pooled choanal and cloacal swabs from clinically diseased parrots and healthy contact animals. Sequencing of parts of the herpesvirus DNA-polymerase gene indicated 98-100% homology of the detected herpesviruses with the Psittacid Herpesvirus 2 (PsHV-2). In one aviculture with cloacal inflammation papillomavirus-DNA was concurrently found to a PsHV-2 infection. In addition to the four avicultures with clinical symptoms 25 more flocks of grey parrots, in total 57 Congo-GP and 13 Timneh-GP, were examined for a herpesvirus infection. A total of six out of 29 studied parrot avicultures were tested positive for PsHV-2. The detection of this virus also in flocks of GP, which were bred in Europe, shows the establishment of this infection in the GP population in captivity. As indicated in the literature as well as in our study PsHV-2 could be only detected in Congo-GP, independently if they were kept either alone or in mixed avicultures with amazon and macaw species. These findings suggest that PsHV-2 is adapted to this Psittacus species.

Abstract
A wide range of human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes have been detected in oral mucosa. Clinical infections with low-risk genotypes manifest as squamous papilloma, condyloma acuminatum, verruca vulgaris, or multifocal epithelial hyperplasia. Clinical infections with high-risk genotypes have been associated with malignant lesions. The most common genotype isolated from subclinical infection is HPV-16. A causal role for HPV in carcinogenesis of oral squamous carcinoma is minimal. Ongoing vaccination against HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18 is expected to decrease the spread of infection and decrease the carcinogenic potential of HPV-16 in the oropharynx and oral cavity.

Abstract
Papillomatosis of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar has been reported for decades in Russia, Scandinavia and Scotland. The disease is typically benign although heavy losses have occasionally been reported. A herpesviral etiology has been suggested based on ultrastructural evidence; however, the virus has not been isolated or genetically characterized. In this study, we provide the first viral sequences detected in the papillomas from diseased Russian Atlantic salmon. Phylogenetic analyses, based on the partial sequences of the herpesviral polymerase and terminase genes, supported the virus as a novel member of the genus Salmonivirus within the family Alloherpesviridae. The sequences of the Atlantic salmon papillomatosis virus differ markedly from those of the 3 known salmoniviruses; therefore, the authors propose the species designation Salmonid herpesvirus 4 to be considered for approval by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses.

Abstract
sophageal squamous papilloma is an uncommon, usually asymptomatic, benign tumor of the squamous epithelium consisting of a raised, sessile, small and round (smooth or rough) lesion. The prevalence is between 0.01 and 0.45% of cases, with a male/female ratio of 3:1. The etiology and pathogenesis appear to be a mechanical or chemical irritation of the mucosa in addition to the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV), important agent in the evolution to a squamous carcinoma, especially HPV types 16 and 18. In this paper, we describe a case of esophageal papilloma whose diagnosis involved endoscopic images, pathological studies and detection of viral DNA by polymerase chain reaction. By using molecular techniques (PCR-RFLP) a profile consistent with HPV type 16 has been obtained. The patient underwent polypectomy and currently, after 3 years of diagnosis, he remains asymptomatic. This work is one of the first national reports of a patient with esophageal papilloma in which one of the most frequently HPV genotypes associated with esophageal carcinoma (HPV 16) has been detected.

Abstract
Cutaneous viral dermatoses are often underdiagnosed in dogs and cats because they are rare, and because it is difficult to identify an exact causative agent. Even so, practitioners in primary care may encounter some characteristic clinical features. This article reviews commonly encountered dermatoses, particularly papillomavirus-associated dermatoses in dogs and cats. It also provides a brief overview of several other dermatoses associated with feline herpesvirus, feline calicivirus, FeLV, and feline poxvirus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This is an update of a Cochrane Review originally published in Issue 4, 2005 of The Cochrane Library and previously updated in 2010.Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis is a condition characterised by benign papillomatous (wart-like) growths in the upper airway. It can affect both adults and children causing airway obstruction and voice change. Treatment usually involves repeated surgical debulking of the papillomata. Several agents have been proposed as adjuvants to surgical debulking, including antivirals, administered systemically or injected into the lesions. OBJECTIVES To assess the effectiveness of antiviral agents as adjuvant therapy in the management of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis in children and adults. SEARCH METHODS We searched the Cochrane Ear, Nose and Throat Disorders Group Trials Register; the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL); PubMed; EMBASE; CINAHL; Web of Science; BIOSIS Previews; Cambridge Scientific Abstracts; ICTRP and additional sources for published and unpublished trials. The date of the most recent search was 24 February 2012. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised controlled trials. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS We identified 143 references from the searches. Forty-three were appropriate for retrieval and assessed for eligibility by the authors. One randomised controlled trial met the inclusion criteria, involving 19 participants. We contacted the authors to obtain additional data to facilitate the review. MAIN RESULTS The included study was a single-institution, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of intralesional cidofovir administered at the time of surgical debulking. Adults (n = 15) and children (n = 4) were included. We judged the study to have a reasonably low risk of bias. After a 12-month trial period, no difference was found between the cidofovir and placebo groups. Both groups showed a significant reduction in disease extent (as assessed at the time of surgery using the Derkay Scoring System), but no significant change in health-related quality of life. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS There is insufficient evidence to support the efficacy of antiviral agents as adjuvant therapy in the management of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis in children or adults. The included randomised controlled trial showed no advantage of intralesional cidofovir over placebo at 12 months. The study was limited by a small sample size and a change in the cidofovir concentration midway through the trial, from 0.3 mg/ml in children and 0.75 mg/ml in adults, to 5 mg/ml in both adults and children. An adequately powered randomised controlled trial of intra-lesional cidofovir, consistently using higher concentrations of cidofovir in comparison with injected placebo, would be required to determine effectiveness convincingly. Future studies must include health-related quality of life and symptom-based outcome measures.

Abstract
Several studies have suggested a possible role for HPV in the pathogenesis of the breast cancer. We investigated the presence of the HPV DNA in breast cancers and non malignant disease breast tissues by the use of a standard HPV detection method (INNO-Lipa HPV), in order to detect HPV DNA in metastatic nodes, to investigate a possible cervical HPV co-infection, and to evaluate the E6/E7 mRNA expression in HPV DNA positive breast cancer tissues. The rate of HPV infection was significantly higher in the cancer group than in controls (9/31 vs. 0/12, p = 0.04). One out of eight metastatic axillary nodes was positive for HPV infection; 2/3 of the positive HPV breast cancer patients were co-infected at the cervical site. The role of the virus in breast oncogenesis is still unclear, since our analysis failed in demonstrating the expression of viral E6 and E7 in positive HPV positive breast tumor tissues.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION HLA-G and HLA-E are two nonclassical class I molecules, which have been well recognized as modulators of innate and adaptive immune responses, and the expression of these molecules in virus infected cells has been associated with subversion of the immune response. OBJECTIVE In this study we performed a cross-sectional study, systematically comparing the expression of HLA-G and HLA-E in benign, pre-malignant and malignant laryngeal lesions, correlating with demographic and clinical variables and with the presence of high-risk and low-risk HPV types. MATERIALS AND METHODS Laryngeal lesions were collected from 109 patients and stratified into 27 laryngeal papillomas, 17 dysplasias, 10 in situ laryngeal carcinomas, 27 laryngeal carcinomas without metastases, 28 laryngeal carcinomas with metastasis along with their respective draining cervical lymph nodes, and 10 normal larynx specimens. The expression of HLA-G and HLA-E molecules was determined by immunohistochemistry. HPV DNA detection and typing was performed using generic and specific primers. RESULTS HLA nonclassical molecules showed a distinct distribution pattern, according to the larynx lesion grade. HLA-G expression increased in benign and premalignant lesions, and gradually decreased in invasive carcinomas and in respective draining cervical lymph nodes. Conversely, HLA-E expression increased as far as lesion grade increased, including increased molecule expression in the draining lymph nodes of malignant lesions. Only 17 (15.6%) patients were HPV DNA positive. CONCLUSIONS Overexpression of HLA-E and underexpression of HLA-G appear to be good markers for malignant larynx lesion.

Abstract
Camel papillomatosis has been described previously, but the genome of the suspected papillomavirus (PV) has not been identified. An outbreak of papillomatosis occurred in a dromedary farm of 55 animals in Sudan during August 2009. The disease was only present in young animals aged about 3-7 months, of which 44 % (11/25) were affected with lesions, mainly on the lips and lower jaw. This study reports for the first time the complete genomes of Camelus dromedarius papillomavirus types 1 (CdPV1) and 2 (CdPV2), isolated from a cauliflower-like nodule and a round oval raised nodule, respectively. Pairwise comparisons of their L1 nucleotide sequences revealed 69.2 % identity, and phylogenetic analyses suggested that these two PV types are grouped within the genus Deltapapillomavirus. Both viruses were isolated from fibropapillomas, although no putative E5 proteins homologous to that of bovine papillomavirus type 1 were identified. The genetic information will be useful for evolutionary studies of the family Papillomaviridae, as well as for the development of diagnostic methods for surveillance of the disease in dromedaries.

Abstract
The polymerase chain reaction technique was applied in "real time" format to evaluate the occurrence rate and infection ratio of various genotypes of human papilloma of high carcinogenic risk in virus-positive women and contact persons. The examination sampling consisted of 738 women aged of 17-50 years. The examination results permitted to establish high percentage of infection of 546 patients (74%) by carcinogenic papilloma viruses. The analysis of detection rate of various genotypes of human papilloma of high carcinogenic risk established that the 56th and 16th types of high carcinogenic risk are revealed more often than others--in 33% and 15.4% correspondingly. In males, first place in occurrence rate is for those types of virus of human papilloma: the 56th n = 10 (33.3%), 16th n = 3 (10%), 45th n = 3 (10%), 51th n = 3 (10%). The rest of genotypes are detected in 3-7% cases.
