Geochemistry and origin of inorganic contaminants in soil, river sediment and surface water in a heavily urbanized river basin

Understanding the geochemistry and contamination of rivers affected by anthropogenic activities is paramount to water resources management. The Asopos river basin in central Greece is facing environmental quality deterioration threats due to industrial, urban and agricultural activities. Here, the geochemistry of river sediments and adjacent soil in terms of major and trace elements (Al, Ca, Mg, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) and the geochemical composition of surface water in terms of major ions, trace elements and nutrients along the Asopos river basin were determined. In addition, this study characterized potential nitrate sources through the analysis of stable isotope composition of NO3- (δ15Ν-ΝΟ3- and δ18Ο-ΝΟ3-). Results indicated that specific chemical constituents including nutrients (NO2-, NH4+, PO43-) and major ions (Na+, Cl-) were highest in the urban, industrialized and downstream areas. On the other hand, nitrate (NO3-) concentration in river water (median 7.9 mg/L) showed a decreasing trend from the upstream agricultural sites to the urban area and even more in the downstream of the urban area sites. Ionic ratios (NO3-/Cl-) and δ15Ν-ΝΟ3- values (range from +10.2 ‰ to +15.7 ‰), complemented with a Bayesian isotope mixing model, clearly showed the influence of organic wastes from septic systems and industries operating in the urban area on river nitrate geochemistry. The interpretation of geochemical data of soil and river sediment samples demonstrated the strong influence of local geology on Cr, Fe, Mn and Ni content, with isolated samples showing elevated concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn, mostly within the industrialized urban environment. The calculation of enrichment factors based on the national background concentrations provided limited insights into the origin of geogenic metals. Overall, this study highlighted the need for a more holistic approach to assess the impact of the geological background and anthropogenic activities on river waters and sediments.

Historical tree phenology data reveal the seasonal rhythms of the Congo Basin rainforest

Tropical forest phenology directly affects regional carbon cycles, but the relation between species-specific and whole-canopy phenology remains largely uncharacterized. We present a unique analysis of historical tropical tree phenology collected in the central Congo Basin, before large-scale impacts of human-induced climate change. Ground-based long-term (1937-1956) phenological observations of 140 tropical tree species are recovered, species-specific phenological patterns analyzed and related to historical meteorological records, and scaled to characterize stand-level canopy dynamics. High phenological variability within and across species and in climate-phenology relationships is observed. The onset of leaf phenophases in deciduous species was triggered by drought and light availability for a subset of species and showed a species-specific decoupling in time along a bi-modal seasonality. The majority of the species remain evergreen, although central African forests experience relatively low rainfall. Annually a maximum of 1.5% of the canopy is in leaf senescence or leaf turnover, with overall phenological variability dominated by a few deciduous species, while substantial variability is attributed to asynchronous events of large and/or abundant trees. Our results underscore the importance of accounting for constituent signals in canopy-wide scaling and the interpretation of remotely sensed phenology signals.

Consistent patterns of common species across tropical tree communities

Trees structure the Earth's most biodiverse ecosystem, tropical forests. The vast number of tree species presents a formidable challenge to understanding these forests, including their response to environmental change, as very little is known about most tropical tree species. A focus on the common species may circumvent this challenge. Here we investigate abundance patterns of common tree species using inventory data on 1,003,805 trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm across 1,568 locations1-6 in closed-canopy, structurally intact old-growth tropical forests in Africa, Amazonia and Southeast Asia. We estimate that 2.2%, 2.2% and 2.3% of species comprise 50% of the tropical trees in these regions, respectively. Extrapolating across all closed-canopy tropical forests, we estimate that just 1,053 species comprise half of Earth's 800 billion tropical trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm. Despite differing biogeographic, climatic and anthropogenic histories7, we find notably consistent patterns of common species and species abundance distributions across the continents. This suggests that fundamental mechanisms of tree community assembly may apply to all tropical forests. Resampling analyses show that the most common species are likely to belong to a manageable list of known species, enabling targeted efforts to understand their ecology. Although they do not detract from the importance of rare species, our results open new opportunities to understand the world's most diverse forests, including modelling their response to environmental change, by focusing on the common species that constitute the majority of their trees.

Integrated global assessment of the natural forest carbon potential

Forests are a substantial terrestrial carbon sink, but anthropogenic changes in land use and climate have considerably reduced the scale of this system1. Remote-sensing estimates to quantify carbon losses from global forests2-5 are characterized by considerable uncertainty and we lack a comprehensive ground-sourced evaluation to benchmark these estimates. Here we combine several ground-sourced6 and satellite-derived approaches2,7,8 to evaluate the scale of the global forest carbon potential outside agricultural and urban lands. Despite regional variation, the predictions demonstrated remarkable consistency at a global scale, with only a 12% difference between the ground-sourced and satellite-derived estimates. At present, global forest carbon storage is markedly under the natural potential, with a total deficit of 226 Gt (model range = 151-363 Gt) in areas with low human footprint. Most (61%, 139 Gt C) of this potential is in areas with existing forests, in which ecosystem protection can allow forests to recover to maturity. The remaining 39% (87 Gt C) of potential lies in regions in which forests have been removed or fragmented. Although forests cannot be a substitute for emissions reductions, our results support the idea2,3,9 that the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of diverse forests offer valuable contributions to meeting global climate and biodiversity targets.

Stable isotopes reveal organic nitrogen pollution and cycling from point and non-point sources in a heavily cultivated (agricultural) Mediterranean river basin

The Pinios River Basin (PRB) is the most intensively cultivated area in Greece, which hosts numerous industries and other anthropogenic activities. The analysis of water samples collected monthly for ∼1 ½ years in eight monitoring sites in the PRB revealed nitrate pollution of organic origin extending from upstream to downstream and occurring throughout the year, masking the signal from the application of synthetic fertilizers. Nitrate concentrations reached up to 3.6 mg/l as NO3--N, without exceeding the drinking water threshold of ∼11.0 mg/l (as NO3--N). However, the water quality status was "poor" or "bad" in ∼50 % of the samples based on a local index, which considers the potential impact of nitrate on aquatic biological communities. The δ15Ν-ΝΟ3- and δ18O-NO3- values ranged from +4.4 ‰ to +20.3 ‰ and from -0.5 ‰ to +14.4 ‰, respectively. The application of a Bayesian model showed that the proportional contribution of organic pollution from industries, animal breeding facilities and manure fertilizers exceeded 70 % in most river sites with an overall uncertainty of ∼0.3 (UI90 index). The δ18O-NO3- and its relationship with δ18O-H2O revealed N-cycling and mixing processes, which were difficult to identify apart from the uptake of nutrients by phytoplankton during the growing season and metabolic activities. The strong correlation of δ15Ν-ΝΟ3- values with a Land Use Index (LUI) and a Point Source Index (PSI) highlighted not only the role of non-point nitrate sources but also of point sources of nitrate pollution on water quality degradation, which are usually overlooked. The nitrification of organic wastes is the dominant nitrate source in most rivers in Europe. The systematic monitoring of rivers for nitrate isotopes will help improve the understanding of N-cycling and the impact of these pollutants on ecosystems and better inform policies for protection measures so to achieve good ecological status.

Drug discovery-based approach identifies new nitrification inhibitors

Nitrogen (N) fertilization is crucial to sustain global food security, but fertilizer N production is energy-demanding and subsequent environmental N losses contribute to biodiversity loss and climate change. N losses can be mitigated be interfering with microbial nitrification, and therefore the use of nitrification inhibitors in enhanced efficiency fertilizers (EEFs) is an important N management strategy to increase N use efficiency and reduce N pollution. However, currently applied nitrification inhibitors have limitations and do not target all nitrifying microorganisms. Here, to identify broad-spectrum nitrification inhibitors, we adopted a drug discovery-based approach and screened 45,400 small molecules on different groups of nitrifying microorganisms. Although a high number of potential nitrification inhibitors were identified, none of them targeted all nitrifier groups. Moreover, a high number of new nitrification inhibitors were shown to be highly effective in culture but did not reduce ammonia consumption in soil. One archaea-targeting inhibitor was not only effective in soil, but even reduced - when co-applied with a bacteria-targeting inhibitor - ammonium consumption and greenhouse gas emissions beyond what is achieved with currently applied nitrification inhibitors. This advocates for combining different types of nitrification inhibitors in EEFs to optimize N management practices and make agriculture more sustainable.

Impact of salinity gradient, water pollution and land use types on greenhouse gas emissions from an urbanized estuary

Estuaries have been recognized as one of the major sources of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in aquatic systems; yet we still lack insights into the impact of both anthropogenic and natural factors on the dynamics of GHG emissions. Here, we assessed the spatiotemporal dynamics and underlying drivers of the GHG emissions from the Scheldt Estuary with a focus on the effects of salinity gradient, water pollution, and land use types, together with their interaction. Overall, we found a negative impact of salinity on carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions which can be due to the decrease of both salinity and water quality when moving upstream. Stronger impact of water pollution on the GHG emissions was found at the freshwater sites upstream compared to saline sites downstream. In particular, when water quality of the sites reduced from good, mainly located in the mouth and surrounded by arable sites, to polluted, mainly located in the upstream and surrounded by urban sites, CO2 emissions from the sites doubled while N2O emissions tripled. Similarly, the effects of water pollution on methane (CH4) emissions became much stronger in the freshwater sites compared to the saline sites. These decreasing effects from upstream to the mouth were associated with the increase in urbanization as sites surrounded by urban areas released on average almost two times more CO2 and N2O than sites surrounded by nature and industry areas. Applied machine learning methods also revealed that, in addition to salinity effects, nutrient and organic enrichment stimulated the GHG emissions from the Scheldt Estuary. These findings highlight the importance of the interaction between salinity, water pollution, and land use in order to understand their influences on GHG emissions from dynamic estuarine systems.

The global biogeography of tree leaf form and habit

Understanding what controls global leaf type variation in trees is crucial for comprehending their role in terrestrial ecosystems, including carbon, water and nutrient dynamics. Yet our understanding of the factors influencing forest leaf types remains incomplete, leaving us uncertain about the global proportions of needle-leaved, broadleaved, evergreen and deciduous trees. To address these gaps, we conducted a global, ground-sourced assessment of forest leaf-type variation by integrating forest inventory data with comprehensive leaf form (broadleaf vs needle-leaf) and habit (evergreen vs deciduous) records. We found that global variation in leaf habit is primarily driven by isothermality and soil characteristics, while leaf form is predominantly driven by temperature. Given these relationships, we estimate that 38% of global tree individuals are needle-leaved evergreen, 29% are broadleaved evergreen, 27% are broadleaved deciduous and 5% are needle-leaved deciduous. The aboveground biomass distribution among these tree types is approximately 21% (126.4 Gt), 54% (335.7 Gt), 22% (136.2 Gt) and 3% (18.7 Gt), respectively. We further project that, depending on future emissions pathways, 17-34% of forested areas will experience climate conditions by the end of the century that currently support a different forest type, highlighting the intensification of climatic stress on existing forests. By quantifying the distribution of tree leaf types and their corresponding biomass, and identifying regions where climate change will exert greatest pressure on current leaf types, our results can help improve predictions of future terrestrial ecosystem functioning and carbon cycling.

Carbon isotope composition of respired CO2 in woody stems and leafy shoots of three tree species along the growing season: physiological drivers for respiratory fractionation

The carbon isotope composition of respired CO2 (δ13CR) and bulk organic matter (δ13CB) of various plant compartments informs about the isotopic fractionation and substrate of respiratory processes, which are crucial to advance the understanding of carbon allocation in plants. Nevertheless, the variation across organs, species and seasons remains poorly understood. Cavity Ring-Down Laser Spectroscopy was applied to measure δ13CR in leafy shoots and woody stems of maple (Acer platanoides L.), oak (Quercus robur L.) and cedar (Thuja occidentalis L.) trees during spring and late summer. Photosynthesis, respiration, growth and non-structural carbohydrates were measured in parallel to evaluate potential drivers for respiratory fractionation. The CO2 respired by maple and oak shoots was 13C-enriched relative to δ13CB during spring, but not late summer or in the stem. In cedar, δ13CR did not vary significantly throughout organs and seasons, with respired CO2 being 13C-depleted relative to δ13CB. Shoot δ13CR was positively related to leaf starch concentration in maple, while stem δ13CR was inversely related to stem growth. These relations were not significant for oak or cedar. The variability in δ13CR suggests (i) different contributions of respiratory pathways between organs and (ii) seasonality in the respiratory substrate and constitutive compounds for wood formation in deciduous species, less apparent in evergreen cedar, whose respiratory metabolism might be less variable.

You are what your host eats: The trophic structure and food chain length of a symbiont community are coupled with the plastic diet of the host ant

Food chain length provides key information on the flow of nutrients and energy in ecosystems. Variation in food chain length has primarily been explained by environmental drivers such as ecosystem size and productivity. Most insights are obtained from theory or aquatic systems, but the importance of these drivers remains largely untested in terrestrial systems. We exploited red wood ant nests markedly differing in size as natural experiments to quantify the drivers of trophic structure and food chain length of their symbiont arthropod communities. Using stable isotopes, we explored the variation in the trophic positions of four symbiont species with the trophic position of the top predator as a proxy for food chain length of the symbiont community. Nest size did not affect food chain length, nor trophic distance between the symbionts. Instead, food chain length and the trophic positions of the symbionts were strongly affected by the host's foraging decisions. When the host diet shifted from predominantly herbivorous to more predacious, the trophic position of the symbionts and food chain length strongly increased. We show for the first time that a food web can be structured by biotic interactions with an engineering species rather than by abiotic environmental variables.

Native diversity buffers against severity of non-native tree invasions

Determining the drivers of non-native plant invasions is critical for managing native ecosystems and limiting the spread of invasive species1,2. Tree invasions in particular have been relatively overlooked, even though they have the potential to transform ecosystems and economies3,4. Here, leveraging global tree databases5-7, we explore how the phylogenetic and functional diversity of native tree communities, human pressure and the environment influence the establishment of non-native tree species and the subsequent invasion severity. We find that anthropogenic factors are key to predicting whether a location is invaded, but that invasion severity is underpinned by native diversity, with higher diversity predicting lower invasion severity. Temperature and precipitation emerge as strong predictors of invasion strategy, with non-native species invading successfully when they are similar to the native community in cold or dry extremes. Yet, despite the influence of these ecological forces in determining invasion strategy, we find evidence that these patterns can be obscured by human activity, with lower ecological signal in areas with higher proximity to shipping ports. Our global perspective of non-native tree invasion highlights that human drivers influence non-native tree presence, and that native phylogenetic and functional diversity have a critical role in the establishment and spread of subsequent invasions.

Assessment of natural and anthropogenic contamination sources in a Mediterranean aquifer by combining hydrochemical and stable isotope techniques

The Atalanti basin is an intensively cultivated area in central Greece, facing groundwater quality deterioration threats due to natural and anthropogenic-related contamination sources. A combination of statistical and hydrogeochemical techniques, and stable isotope compositions (δ²H-H₂O and δ¹⁸Ο-Η₂Ο, δ¹⁵Ν-ΝΟ₃^- and δ¹⁸Ο-ΝΟ₃^-, δ³⁴S-SO₄^2- and δ¹⁸O-SO₄^2-) were applied to elucidate the origin of salinity and nitrate contamination, and shed light on the potential associations between geogenic Cr(VI) and NO₃^- sources and transformations. Nitrate and Cr(VI) concentrations reached up to 337 mg L^-1 and 76.1 μg L^-1, respectively, exceeding WHO threshold values in places. The cluster of samples with the high salinity was mostly influenced by irrigation return flow and marine aerosols, and less by seawater intrusion, as evidenced by the ionic ratios (e.g., Na⁺/Cl^-) and the stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen in water, and sulphur and oxygen in sulphates. The δ¹⁵Ν-ΝΟ₃^- and δ¹⁸O-NO₃^- values ranged from +2.0 ‰ to +14.5 ‰ and + 0.3 ‰ to +11.0 ‰, respectively. We found that the dominant sources of NO₃^- in groundwater were fertilizers in the central part of the area and sewage waste in the northern part around the residential area of Livanates. The occurrence of denitrification was evident in the northern part of the basin, where the DO levels were lowest (≤ 2.2 mg L^-1), whereas nitrification of NH₄⁺-fertilizers prevailed in the central part. Elevated Cr(VI) values (≥ 20 μg/l) were associated with the lowest deviation of the measured from the theoretical nitrification δ¹⁸Ο-NO₃^- values, whereas the lowest Cr(VI) values were observed in the denitrified water samples. Our isotope findings revealed the strong influence of redox conditions on the biogeochemical transformations of N species and the mobilization of Cr(VI) that will help improve the understanding of the fate of these contaminants from the unsaturated zone to the groundwater in areas of agricultural and urban land use.

Organic matter processing in a [simulated] offshore wind farm ecosystem in current and future climate and aquaculture scenarios

The rapid development of blue economy and human use of offshore space triggered the concept of co-location of marine activities and is causing diverse local pressures on the environment. These pressures add to, and interact with, global challenges such as ocean acidification and warming. This study investigates the combined pressures of climate change and the planned co-location of offshore wind farm (OWF) and aquaculture zones on the carbon flow through epifaunal communities inhabiting wind turbines in the North Sea. A ¹³C-labelled phytoplankton pulse-chase experiment was performed in mesocosms (4 m³) holding undisturbed hard-substrate (HS) communities, natural sediment with infauna, and mobile invertebrate predators. Carbon assimilation was quantified under current and predicted future-climate conditions (+3 °C and -0.3 pH units), as well as a future-climate co-use scenario with blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) aquaculture. Climate change induced an increase in macrofaunal carbon assimilation as well as an organic enrichment of underlying sediments. Dynamic (non-)trophic links between M. edulis and other HS epifauna resulted in shifts among the species contributing most to the phytoplankton-derived carbon flow across climate scenarios. Increased inter- and intraspecific resource competition in the presence of M. edulis aquaculture prevented a large increase in the total assimilation of phytoplankton by HS fauna. Lower individual carbon assimilation rates by both mussels and other epifauna suggest that if filter capacity by HS epifauna would approach renewal by advection/mixing, M. edulis individuals would likely grow to a smaller-than-desired commercial size. In the same scenario, benthic organic carbon mineralisation was significantly boosted due to increased organic matter deposition by the aquaculture set-up. Combining these results with in situ OWF abundance data confirmed M. edulis as the most impactful OWF AHS species in terms of (total) carbon assimilation as well as the described stress responses due to climate change and the addition of bivalve aquaculture.

Soil geochemistry - and not topography - as a major driver of carbon allocation, stocks, and dynamics in forests and soils of African tropical montane ecosystems

The lack of field-based data in the tropics limits our mechanistic understanding of the drivers of net primary productivity (NPP) and allocation. Specifically, the role of local edaphic factors - such as soil parent material and topography controlling soil fertility as well as water and nutrient fluxes - remains unclear and introduces substantial uncertainty in understanding net ecosystem productivity and carbon (C) stocks. Using a combination of vegetation growth monitoring and soil geochemical properties, we found that soil fertility parameters reflecting the local parent material are the main drivers of NPP and C allocation patterns in tropical montane forests, resulting in significant differences in below- to aboveground biomass components across geochemical (soil) regions. Topography did not constrain the variability in C allocation and NPP. Soil organic C stocks showed no relation to C input in tropical forests. Instead, plant C input seemingly exceeded the maximum potential of these soils to stabilize C. We conclude that, even after many millennia of weathering and the presence of deeply developed soils, above- and belowground C allocation in tropical forests, as well as soil C stocks, vary substantially due to the geochemical properties that soils inherit from parent material.

Challenges in measuring nitrogen isotope signatures in inorganic nitrogen forms: An interlaboratory comparison of three common measurement approaches

RATIONALE

Stable isotope approaches are increasingly applied to better understand the cycling of inorganic nitrogen (N_i ) forms, key limiting nutrients in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. A systematic comparison of the accuracy and precision of the most commonly used methods to analyze δ¹⁵ N in NO₃ ^- and NH₄ ⁺ and interlaboratory comparison tests to evaluate the comparability of isotope results between laboratories are, however, still lacking.

METHODS

Here, we conducted an interlaboratory comparison involving 10 European laboratories to compare different methods and laboratory performance to measure δ¹⁵ N in NO₃ ^- and NH₄ ⁺ . The approaches tested were (a) microdiffusion (MD), (b) chemical conversion (CM), which transforms N_i to either N₂ O (CM-N₂ O) or N₂ (CM-N₂ ), and (c) the denitrifier (DN) methods.

RESULTS

The study showed that standards in their single forms were reasonably replicated by the different methods and laboratories, with laboratories applying CM-N₂ O performing superior for both NO₃ ^- and NH₄ ⁺ , followed by DN. Laboratories using MD significantly underestimated the "true" values due to incomplete recovery and also those using CM-N₂ showed issues with isotope fractionation. Most methods and laboratories underestimated the at%¹⁵ N of N_i of labeled standards in their single forms, but relative errors were within maximal 6% deviation from the real value and therefore acceptable. The results showed further that MD is strongly biased by nonspecificity. The results of the environmental samples were generally highly variable, with standard deviations (SD) of up to ± 8.4‰ for NO₃ ^- and ± 32.9‰ for NH₄ ⁺ ; SDs within laboratories were found to be considerably lower (on average 3.1‰). The variability could not be connected to any single factor but next to errors due to blank contamination, isotope normalization, and fractionation, and also matrix effects and analytical errors have to be considered.

CONCLUSIONS

The inconsistency among all methods and laboratories raises concern about reported δ¹⁵ N values particularly from environmental samples.

How can we possibly resolve the planet's nitrogen dilemma?

Nitrogen is the most crucial element in the production of nutritious feeds and foods. The production of reactive nitrogen by means of fossil fuel has thus far been able to guarantee the protein supply for the world population. Yet, the production and massive use of fertilizer nitrogen constitute a major threat in terms of environmental health and sustainability. It is crucial to promote consumer acceptance and awareness towards proteins produced by highly effective microorganisms, and their potential to replace proteins obtained with poor nitrogen efficiencies from plants and animals. The fact that reactive fertilizer nitrogen, produced by the Haber Bosch process, consumes a significant amount of fossil fuel worldwide is of concern. Moreover, recently, the prices of fossil fuels have increased the cost of reactive nitrogen by a factor of 3 to 5 times, while international policies are fostering the transition towards a more sustainable agro-ecology by reducing mineral fertilizers inputs and increasing organic farming. The combination of these pressures and challenges opens opportunities to use the reactive nitrogen nutrient more carefully. Time has come to effectively recover used nitrogen from secondary resources and to upgrade it to a legal status of fertilizer. Organic nitrogen is a slow-release fertilizer, it has a factor of 2.5 or higher economic value per unit nitrogen as fertilizer and thus adequate technologies to produce it, for instance by implementing photobiological processes, are promising. Finally, it appears wise to start the integration in our overall feed and food supply chains of the exceptional potential of biological nitrogen fixation. Nitrogen produced by the nitrogenase enzyme, either in the soil or in novel biotechnology reactor systems, deserves to have a 'renaissance' in the context of planetary governance in general and the increasing number of people who desire to be fed in a sustainable way in particular.

Co-limitation towards lower latitudes shapes global forest diversity gradients

The latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG) is one of the most recognized global patterns of species richness exhibited across a wide range of taxa. Numerous hypotheses have been proposed in the past two centuries to explain LDG, but rigorous tests of the drivers of LDGs have been limited by a lack of high-quality global species richness data. Here we produce a high-resolution (0.025° × 0.025°) map of local tree species richness using a global forest inventory database with individual tree information and local biophysical characteristics from ~1.3 million sample plots. We then quantify drivers of local tree species richness patterns across latitudes. Generally, annual mean temperature was a dominant predictor of tree species richness, which is most consistent with the metabolic theory of biodiversity (MTB). However, MTB underestimated LDG in the tropics, where high species richness was also moderated by topographic, soil and anthropogenic factors operating at local scales. Given that local landscape variables operate synergistically with bioclimatic factors in shaping the global LDG pattern, we suggest that MTB be extended to account for co-limitation by subordinate drivers.

Identification of sources and transformations of nitrate in Cr(VI)-impacted alluvial aquifers by a hydrogeochemical and δ15N-NO3- and δ18O-NO3 - isotopes approach

A coupled methodology of nitrogen isotopes, hydrogeochemical characterization, multivariate statistical analysis, and SIAR Bayesian modeling has been employed to identify the sources of NO₃^- and N transformation processes in three alluvial aquifers (Schinos, Thiva, and Central Evia) located in central Greece where geogenic Cr(VI) co-occurs with agricultural activity and rural development. Hexavalent chromium concentrations exceed 50 μg/L in many sampling stations of the studied groundwater bodies, while nitrate contamination is evident in all three study areas with concentrations well over 50 mg/L. The mean δ¹⁵N-NO₃^- and δ¹⁸Ο-NO₃^- values are 6.67 ± 1.77‰ and 2.68 ± 1.77‰ in C. Evia, 8.72 ± 4.74‰ and 3.96 ± 4.57‰ in Schinos and 4.44 ± 1.71‰ and 2.91 ± 1.02‰ in Thiva, respectively. Domestic sewage and N-bearing fertilizers are contributing in various degrees to the observed nitrification which is the dominant transformation process of N in the studied aquifers. Multivariate statistics indicated that the main processes identified in the study areas are salinization, silicate dissolution, and groundwater contamination due to fertilizer use. It is suggested that ultramafic rock-related alluvial aquifers must be closely monitored in terms of nutrient inputs as an effective measure for controlling Cr(VI) release in groundwater.

Warming and redistribution of nitrogen inputs drive an increase in terrestrial nitrous oxide emission factor

Anthropogenic nitrogen inputs cause major negative environmental impacts, including emissions of the important greenhouse gas N2O. Despite their importance, shifts in terrestrial N loss pathways driven by global change are highly uncertain. Here we present a coupled soil-atmosphere isotope model (IsoTONE) to quantify terrestrial N losses and N2O emission factors from 1850-2020. We find that N inputs from atmospheric deposition caused 51% of anthropogenic N2O emissions from soils in 2020. The mean effective global emission factor for N2O was 4.3 ± 0.3% in 2020 (weighted by N inputs), much higher than the surface area-weighted mean (1.1 ± 0.1%). Climate change and spatial redistribution of fertilisation N inputs have driven an increase in global emission factor over the past century, which accounts for 18% of the anthropogenic soil flux in 2020. Predicted increases in fertilisation in emerging economies will accelerate N2O-driven climate warming in coming decades, unless targeted mitigation measures are introduced.

Isotopically characterised N2 O reference materials for use as community standards

RATIONALE

Information on the isotopic composition of nitrous oxide (N₂ O) at natural abundance supports the identification of its source and sink processes. In recent years, a number of mass spectrometric and laser spectroscopic techniques have been developed and are increasingly used by the research community. Advances in this active research area, however, critically depend on the availability of suitable N₂ O isotope Reference Materials (RMs).

METHODS

Within the project Metrology for Stable Isotope Reference Standards (SIRS), seven pure N₂ O isotope RMs have been developed and their ¹⁵ N/¹⁴ N, ¹⁸ O/¹⁶ O, ¹⁷ O/¹⁶ O ratios and ¹⁵ N site preference (SP) have been analysed by specialised laboratories against isotope reference materials. A particular focus was on the ¹⁵ N site-specific isotopic composition, as this measurand is both highly diagnostic for source appointment and challenging to analyse and link to existing scales.

RESULTS

The established N₂ O isotope RMs offer a wide spread in delta (δ) values: δ¹⁵ N: 0 to +104‰, δ¹⁸ O: +39 to +155‰, and δ¹⁵ N^SP : -4 to +20‰. Conversion and uncertainty propagation of δ¹⁵ N and δ¹⁸ O to the Air-N₂ and VSMOW scales, respectively, provides robust estimates for δ¹⁵ N(N₂ O) and δ¹⁸ O(N₂ O), with overall uncertainties of about 0.05‰ and 0.15‰, respectively. For δ¹⁵ N^SP , an offset of >1.5‰ compared with earlier calibration approaches was detected, which should be revisited in the future.

CONCLUSIONS

A set of seven N₂ O isotope RMs anchored to the international isotope-ratio scales was developed that will promote the implementation of the recommended two-point calibration approach. Particularly, the availability of δ¹⁷ O data for N₂ O RMs is expected to improve data quality/correction algorithms with respect to δ¹⁵ N^SP and δ¹⁵ N analysis by mass spectrometry. We anticipate that the N₂ O isotope RMs will enhance compatibility between laboratories and accelerate research progress in this emerging field.

Patterns of free amino acids in tundra soils reflect mycorrhizal type, shrubification, and warming

The soil nitrogen (N) cycle in cold terrestrial ecosystems is slow and organically bound N is an important source of N for plants in these ecosystems. Many plant species can take up free amino acids from these infertile soils, either directly or indirectly via their mycorrhizal fungi. We hypothesized that plant community changes and local plant community differences will alter the soil free amino acid pool and composition; and that long-term warming could enhance this effect. To test this, we studied the composition of extractable free amino acids at five separate heath, meadow, and bog locations in subarctic and alpine Scandinavia, with long-term (13 to 24 years) warming manipulations. The plant communities all included a mixture of ecto-, ericoid-, and arbuscular mycorrhizal plant species. Vegetation dominated by grasses and forbs with arbuscular and non-mycorrhizal associations showed highest soil free amino acid content, distinguishing them from the sites dominated by shrubs with ecto- and ericoid-mycorrhizal associations. Warming increased shrub and decreased moss cover at two sites, and by using redundancy analysis, we found that altered soil free amino acid composition was related to this plant cover change. From this, we conclude that the mycorrhizal type is important in controlling soil N cycling and that expansion of shrubs with ectomycorrhiza (and to some extent ericoid mycorrhiza) can help retain N within the ecosystems by tightening the N cycle.

Greenhouse gas dynamics in an urbanized river system: influence of water quality and land use

Rivers act as a natural source of greenhouse gases (GHGs). However, anthropogenic activities can largely alter the chemical composition and microbial communities of rivers, consequently affecting their GHG production. To investigate these impacts, we assessed the accumulation of CO₂, CH₄, and N₂O in an urban river system (Cuenca, Ecuador). High variation of dissolved GHG concentrations was found among river tributaries that mainly depended on water quality and land use. By using Prati and Oregon water quality indices, we observed a clear pattern between water quality and the dissolved GHG concentration: the more polluted the sites were, the higher were their dissolved GHG concentrations. When river water quality deteriorated from acceptable to very heavily polluted, the mean value of pCO₂ and dissolved CH₄ increased by up to ten times while N₂O concentrations boosted by 15 times. Furthermore, surrounding land-use types, i.e., urban, roads, and agriculture, could considerably affect the GHG production in the rivers. Particularly, the average pCO₂ and dissolved N₂O of the sites close to urban areas were almost four times higher than those of the natural sites while this ratio was 25 times in case of CH₄, reflecting the finding that urban areas had the worst water quality with almost 70% of their sites being polluted while this proportion of nature areas was only 12.5%. Lastly, we identified dissolved oxygen, ammonium, and flow characteristics as the main important factors to the GHG production by applying statistical analysis and random forests. These results highlighted the impacts of land-use types on the production of GHGs in rivers contaminated by sewage discharges and surface runoff.

Global maps of soil temperature

Research in global change ecology relies heavily on global climatic grids derived from estimates of air temperature in open areas at around 2 m above the ground. These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km2 resolution for 0-5 and 5-15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km2 pixels (summarized from 8519 unique temperature sensors) across all the world's major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (-0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Nevertheless, we highlight the need to fill remaining geographic gaps by collecting more in situ measurements of microclimate conditions to further enhance the spatiotemporal resolution of global soil temperature products for ecological applications.

Effect of growing conditions and postharvest processing on arabica coffee bean physical quality features and defects

The individual and interaction effects of elevation, production system (PS), shade and postharvest processing (PHP) on the ratio of dry beans to red cherries and the green bean physical quality features and defects of arabica coffee in southwestern Ethiopia were evaluated. The results showed that, with increasing elevation, the proportions of the total defected beans and large beans decreased while that of medium beans increased. Moreover, the proportion of secondary defects, 1000 seed weight and bean volume were higher for lowland and midland coffees than for highland coffee, but bean density was higher for highland than for lowland and midland coffees. The proportion of the total defected beans was also higher for modern plantation coffee in lowland than for modern plantation and semi-plantation coffees in midland and highland, but the 1000 seed weight was lower for semi-plantation coffee in highland than for modern plantation coffee in lowland and midland. The ratio of primary and secondary defects respectively was higher for dry- and wet-processed coffee in lowland than for dry- and wet-processed coffees in midland and highland. But, the ratio of small beans was lower for wet-processed coffee in lowland than for dry-processed coffee across elevations. The ratio of dry beans to red cherries and the 100 beans volume were higher for wet-processed modern plantation and semi-plantation coffees in midland than for dry-processed coffees of both production systems across elevations. However, the ratio of large beans was higher (1) for wet-processed modern plantation coffee in lowland than for dry- and wet-processed coffees of both production systems across elevations, and (2) for coffee that was grown without shade and wet-processed in lowland than for other coffees. Bean density was higher for dry-processed modern plantation and semi-plantation coffee in midland and highland, respectively than for other coffees across elevations. Overall, these results underlined the primary effects of elevation and PS, and the complex interaction effects between PHP and PS or shade on the ratio of dry beans to red cherries and the physical features and defects of green arabica coffee beans.

Observing the water handling in humans to resolve the role of the interstitium: preliminary results of the usability of deuterium oxide and bio-impedance analysis - a pilot analysis

The aim of this research was to evaluate the relevance of using deuterium oxide (²H₂O) and bio-impedance analysis (BIA) to assess size and function of the interstitium for urological research. Nineteen volunteers were recruited to this prospective trial combining ingestion of ²H₂O and BIA. Blood samples were obtained every 10 min after ingestion of ²H₂O. Urine was collected before and after the experiment. BIA was performed every 5 min. Body position was alternated to study the effect on fluid distribution. First order kinetics were assumed for the uptake of ²H₂O from the gastrointestinal tract to the blood. Sex seemed to have an influence with a significantly slower exchange for women (p = 0.041, men: 0.052 min^-1, women: 0.038 min^-1). Impedance measured in legs (men: p = 0.012, women: p = 0.008) and trunk (both p < 0.001) decreased significantly with posture change. These changes probably reflect the orthostatic redistribution of fluid with an increase of fluid in both trunk and legs. Both methods were tested and found to be useful for further urological research. Significant gender differences in ²H₂O uptake dynamics from the gastrointestinal pool were observed. An impact of posture changes on the electrical impedance measured was observed.

Efflux and assimilation of xylem-transported CO2 in stems and leaves of tree species with different wood anatomy

Determining the fate of CO₂ respired in woody tissues is necessary to understand plant respiratory physiology and to evaluate CO₂ recycling mechanisms. An aqueous ¹³ C-enriched CO₂ solution was infused into the stem of 3-4 m tall trees to estimate efflux and assimilation of xylem-transported CO₂ via cavity ring-down laser spectroscopy and isotope ratio mass spectrometry, respectively. Different tree locations (lower stem, upper stem and leafy shoots) and tissues (xylem, bark and leaves) were monitored in species with tracheid, diffuse- and ring-porous wood anatomy (cedar, maple and oak, respectively). Radial xylem CO₂ diffusivity and xylem [CO₂ ] were lower in cedar relative to maple and oak trees, thereby limiting label diffusion. Part of the labeled ¹³ CO₂ was assimilated in cedar (8.7%) and oak (20.6%) trees, mostly in xylem and bark tissues of the stem, while limited solution uptake in maple trees hindered the detection of label assimilation. Little label reached foliar tissues, suggesting substantial label loss along the stem-branch transition following reductions in the radial diffusive pathway. Differences in respiration rates and radial xylem CO₂ diffusivity (lower in conifer relative to angiosperm species) might reconcile discrepancies in efflux and assimilation of xylem-transported CO₂ so far observed between taxonomic clades.

In-depth analysis of N2O fluxes in tropical forest soils of the Congo Basin combining isotope and functional gene analysis

Primary tropical forests generally exhibit large gaseous nitrogen (N) losses, occurring as nitric oxide (NO), nitrous oxide (N₂O) or elemental nitrogen (N₂). The release of N₂O is of particular concern due to its high global warming potential and destruction of stratospheric ozone. Tropical forest soils are predicted to be among the largest natural sources of N₂O; however, despite being the world's second-largest rainforest, measurements of gaseous N-losses from forest soils of the Congo Basin are scarce. In addition, long-term studies investigating N₂O fluxes from different forest ecosystem types (lowland and montane forests) are scarce. In this study we show that fluxes measured in the Congo Basin were lower than fluxes measured in the Neotropics, and in the tropical forests of Australia and South East Asia. In addition, we show that despite different climatic conditions, average annual N₂O fluxes in the Congo Basin's lowland forests (0.97 ± 0.53 kg N ha^-1 year^-1) were comparable to those in its montane forest (0.88 ± 0.97 kg N ha^-1 year^-1). Measurements of soil pore air N₂O isotope data at multiple depths suggests that a microbial reduction of N₂O to N₂ within the soil may account for the observed low surface N₂O fluxes and low soil pore N₂O concentrations. The potential for microbial reduction is corroborated by a significant abundance and expression of the gene nosZ in soil samples from both study sites. Although isotopic and functional gene analyses indicate an enzymatic potential for complete denitrification, combined gaseous N-losses (N₂O, N₂) are unlikely to account for the missing N-sink in these forests. Other N-losses such as NO, N₂ via Feammox or hydrological particulate organic nitrogen export could play an important role in soils of the Congo Basin and should be the focus of future research.

Experimental approach to assess fertilizer nitrogen use, distribution, and loss in pear fruit trees

Enhanced use efficiency of fertilizer nitrogen (N) is paramount for sustainable pear fruit production. Sufficient fruit N content is a major factor for pear fruit storage potential, but fertilizer N use efficiency in pear fruit trees is generally low. The objective of this work was to test a methodology to quantify N uptake, partitioning and leaching loss as influenced by different calcium nitrate (Ca(NO₃)₂) fertilizer timings. To this end, 10-year-old 'Conference' pear trees (Pyrus communis L.) were transplanted and grown in soil-filled pallet boxes subjected to different timing of fertilizer addition. A fraction of the calcium nitrate was labelled with ¹⁵N and applied one month before full bloom, during summer and post-harvest. By sampling newly formed biomass (i.e., leaves, fruit and flower buds), temporal dynamics in the N fraction derived from calcium nitrate fertilization were determined. Simultaneously NO₃^- leaching derived from calcium nitrate fertilization was quantified. Our data suggest that spring application of N was most efficiently partitioned to leaves, fruits and buds at the time of harvest with a mean percentage of calcium nitrate derived N (Ndff) of 9.2%, 20.4% and 18.6%, respectively. Summer application of calcium nitrate was far less efficient at the time of harvest with Ndff of 0.56%, 0.89% and 1.4%, respectively, and substantially higher NO₃^- leaching was observed compared to spring fertilization. Post-harvest application showed even higher levels of leaching. Applying a split fertilization scheme with 60 kg N ha^-1 evenly spread over spring, summer, and post-harvest, about 9, 15 and 30%, respectively, of the fertilizer N had leached out as NO₃^- at the end of the growing season. This experimental approach may offer potential for detailed N budget studies for various fruit tree studies.

A novel instrument for the prevention of condylar torque in bilateral sagittal ramus osteotomy when using bicortical screw fixation

When using the bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) technique, rigid internal fixation (RIF) remains the standard method to accurately fix the distal and proximal osteotomy fragments. A concern with the use of RIF, especially with bicortical screws, is the increased risk of condylar torque and its functional consequences. This technical note introduces a new method for preventing torque of the mandibular condyles after BSSO, using a sagittal split space maintainer.

Legacy of historic land cover changes on sediment provenance tracked with isotopic tracers in a Mediterranean agroforestry catchment

A Compound Specific Stable Isotope (CSSI) sediment tracing approach is applied for the first time in a Mediterranean mountain agroforestry catchment subjected to intense land use changes in the past decades. Many Mediterranean mountain environments underwent conversion of rangelands into croplands during the previous centuries to increase agricultural production. Converted land has increased the risk of erosion and in some cases has led to loss of the entire fertile topsoil. After land abandonment the process was gradually reversed during the middle of the 20th century, allowing the recovery of natural land cover and reduction of soil erosion rates. The ¹³C abundance of long chain fatty acids was used as tracer to assess the contribution of soil under different vegetation covers in complex landscapes subjected to land use changes after land abandonment in a medium-sized Mediterranean catchment. A Bayesian mixing model (MixSIAR) was used for estimating the contribution of different land use types to suspended sediments. To this purpose, composite samples were collected over the four main land covers existing in the study area: cropland, Mediterranean forest, pine forest, scrubland, and two main geomorphic elements: highly disturbed areas such as exposed subsoil and channel banks. Suspended sediment traps were installed at three locations in the catchment to assess the variability of source contributions from the headwaters to the outlet of the catchment. At every sampling point three replicating traps integrated the suspended sediment per climatologic season during a one hydrological year. The fatty acids (FAs) content was significantly higher at the catchment outlet than at the headwaters. The δ¹³C signatures of the FAs were successful in discriminating between Mediterranean forest, scrubland, pine forest and both geomorphic elements. Overall, the model identified agricultural land as the largest contributing source for most of the sampled seasons. The inclusion of prior information with different informativeness produced variations in the model outputs and could represent an advantage as much as a disadvantage if priors are not used with caution and supported by robust evidence. The results of this study suggest that CSSI tracers are needed to correctly assess land use related sediment sources, while channel bank and subsoil contributions require geochemical tracers. The high agricultural apportionment despite its small coverage (16%) point out to the impact of human activities and the agriculture cycle on soil loss in these mountain agroforestry systems.

Resistance of African tropical forests to an extreme climate anomaly

The responses of tropical forests to environmental change are critical uncertainties in predicting the future impacts of climate change. The positive phase of the 2015-2016 El Niño Southern Oscillation resulted in unprecedented heat and low precipitation in the tropics with substantial impacts on the global carbon cycle. The role of African tropical forests is uncertain as their responses to short-term drought and temperature anomalies have yet to be determined using on-the-ground measurements. African tropical forests may be particularly sensitive because they exist in relatively dry conditions compared with Amazonian or Asian forests, or they may be more resistant because of an abundance of drought-adapted species. Here, we report responses of structurally intact old-growth lowland tropical forests inventoried within the African Tropical Rainforest Observatory Network (AfriTRON). We use 100 long-term inventory plots from six countries each measured at least twice prior to and once following the 2015-2016 El Niño event. These plots experienced the highest temperatures and driest conditions on record. The record temperature did not significantly reduce carbon gains from tree growth or significantly increase carbon losses from tree mortality, but the record drought did significantly decrease net carbon uptake. Overall, the long-term biomass increase of these forests was reduced due to the El Niño event, but these plots remained a live biomass carbon sink (0.51 ± 0.40 Mg C ha-1 y-1) despite extreme environmental conditions. Our analyses, while limited to African tropical forests, suggest they may be more resistant to climatic extremes than Amazonian and Asian forests.

Spatial and temporal variations of greenhouse gas emissions from a waste stabilization pond: Effects of sludge distribution and accumulation

Due to regular influx of organic matter and nutrients, waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) can release considerable quantities of greenhouse gases (GHGs). To investigate the spatiotemporal variations of GHG emissions from WSPs with a focus on the effects of sludge accumulation and distribution, we conducted a bathymetry survey and two sampling campaigns in Ucubamba WSP (Cuenca, Ecuador). The results indicated that spatial variation of GHG emissions was strongly dependent on sludge distribution. Thick sludge layers in aerated ponds and facultative ponds caused substantial CO₂ and CH₄ emissions which accounted for 21.3% and 78.7% of the total emissions from the plant. Conversely, the prevalence of anoxic conditions stimulated the N₂O consumption via complete denitrification leading to a net uptake from the atmosphere, i.e. up to 1.4±0.2 mg-N m^-2 d^-1. Double emission rates of CO₂ were found in the facultative and maturation ponds during the day compared to night-time emissions, indicating the important role of algal respiration, while no diel variation of the CH₄ and N₂O emissions was found. Despite the uptake of N₂O, the total GHG emissions of the WSP was higher than constructed wetlands and conventional centralized wastewater treatment facilities. Hence, it is recommended that sludge management with proper desludging regulation should be included as an important mitigation measure to reduce the carbon footprint of pond treatment facilities.

Identifying the sources of nitrate contamination using a combined dual isotope, chemical and Bayesian model approach in a tropical agricultural river: Case study in the Mun River, Thailand

Environmental issues triggered by increasing nitrate in agricultural river has become global concern. Identifying nitrate sources and transformation are crucial for water sources protection and eliminating nitrate contamination in an agricultural watershed. In this study, chemical and dual isotopic compositions of nitrate were employed to trace the nitrate sources and transformation processes, and proportional contribution of NO₃^- source were estimated by SIAR based on Bayesian model. NH₄⁺ concentrations in middle Mun and lower Mun in wet season were significantly higher than NO₃^-, suggesting enhanced runoff processes by flood promote agricultural fertilized NH₄⁺ leaching into the river. Higher Cl^- concentration and NO₃^-/Cl^- indicated that manure and sewage was the dominate nitrate source in the Lam Takhong River and the upper Mun. The overall values of δ¹⁵N-NO₃^- and δ¹⁸O-NO₃^- ranged from -3.9‰ to +16.6‰ and from -5.2‰ to +40.0‰, respectively. The results of nitrate isotopes indicated that NO₃^- mainly originated from soil N nitrogen, chemical fertilizer, and manure and sewage wastes. Spatially, soil N and chemical fertilizer contributed the most nitrate in the mainstream of lower Mun, middle Mun, and the Lam Takhong River; whereas over 60% of nitrate was derived from manure and sewage in the upper Mun. The spatial variation of water discharge and rainfall, together with the nitrate concentration and isotopes inferred that the nitrate sources and transformations in rain-fed river in tropical zone were distinguished from other rivers. High water discharge driven by rainfall events accelerated the nitrate export and the contribution of atmospheric deposition in wet season, and enlarged the contribution of manure and sewage in dry season. This study provided an example for further researches and approaches to assess the effects of tropical climate and agriculture on nitrate accumulation in watershed.

Spatiotemporal hydro-chemical and isotopic dataset of the tropical Nyando river basin in Kenya

This article presents hydro-chemical and isotopic (δ¹⁵N-, δ¹⁸O‒NO₃⁻, δ¹¹B) data of water samples and potential nitrate sources from the Nyando river basin, a tributary of the Lake Victoria in Kenya. The data collection involved field sampling of water samples in 23 sampling stations spatially distributed in the basin during nine seasons from July/2016 to May/2018. The hydro-chemical data was generated from the Laboratory analysis of the water samples using the ion chromatogram. Samples for nitrate isotope (δ¹⁵N-, δ¹⁸O‒NO₃⁻) analysis were prepared via the bacterial denitrification method and analysed using Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer. The data, which is categorised in different land use zones and seasons, is important for understanding the spatiotemporal variation in nitrate and solute concentrations and the role of land use on the river water quality. In addition, the δ¹⁵N-, δ¹⁸O‒NO₃⁻ and δ¹¹B values are key for elucidating nitrate pollution sources and potential biogeochemical processes for the management and control of nutrient pollution and eutrophication of the Lake Victoria. Furthermore, the dataset can be of great use in water quality models for understanding non-point pollution dynamics in tropical basins. This article is related to [1].

High photosynthetic capacity of Sahelian C3 and C4 plants

The semi-arid ecosystems of the African Sahel play an important role in the global carbon cycle and are among the most sensitive ecosystems to future environmental pressures. Still, basic data of photosynthetic characteristics of Sahelian vegetation are very limited, preventing us to properly understand these ecosystems and to project their response to future global changes. Here, we aim to study and quantify key leaf traits, including photosynthetic parameters and leaf nutrients (N_leaf and P_leaf), of common C₃ and C₄ Sahelian plants (trees, lianas, and grasses) at the Dahra field site (Senegal). Dahra is a reference site for grazed semi-arid Sahelian savannah ecosystems in carbon cycle studies. Within the studied species, we found that photosynthetic parameters varied considerably between functional types. We also found significant relationships between and within photosynthetic parameters and leaf traits which mostly differed in their slopes from C₃ to C₄ plants. In agreement with the leaf economic spectrum, strong relationships (R² = 0.71) were found between SLA and N_leaf whereby C₃ and C₄ plants showed very similar relationships. By comparing our data to a global dataset of plant traits, we show that measured Sahelian plants exhibit higher photosynthetic capacity (A_sat) compared to the non-Sahelian vegetation, with values that are on average a fourfold of the global average. Moreover, Sahelian C₃ plants showed photosynthetic nutrient use efficiencies that were on average roughly twice as high as global averages. We interpreted these results as the potential adaptation of Sahelian plants to short growing season lengths via an efficient nutrient allocation to optimize photosynthesis during this period. Our study provides robust estimates of key functional traits, but also traits relationships that will help to calibrate and validate vegetation models over this data-poor region.

Nitrogen transformation and pathways in the shallow groundwater-soil system within agricultural landscapes

The present study considers the behavior of nitrogen compounds in the shallow groundwater-soil system as necessary for the functioning of the nitrogen cycle within agricultural landscapes and one of the first steps of the formation of groundwater chemical composition. Data were collected in 2011-2018 within the Poyang Lake area (Jiangxi Province, China), where agricultural landscapes prevail. The soil and groundwater samples were taken in different periods of an agricultural season at the beginning of the agricultural season (spring) and after harvesting (autumn). The combined geochemical data on the chemical and microbiological composition of the soils and shallow groundwater and isotopic data on dissolved nitrate allowed researchers to resolve that nitrogen enters the system in the form of organic compounds, particularly, due to the soil fertilization at the beginning of the agricultural season. Organic nitrogen compounds transform into nitrate under the influence of nitrifiers in the soil before getting the shallow aquifer, where the occurrence of denitrification is suggested. Within the Ganjiang and Xiushui interfluve, reducing conditions, together with the formation of clay minerals from the aqueous solution, may serve a geochemical barrier for the accumulation of nitrogen compounds preventing the transformation of ammonium to nitrate and providing its sorption. It also should be noted that bacterial diversity in the shallow groundwater has a strong relation with the amount of nitrate in the system, whereas in the soil, it is connected with sampling depth.

SoilTemp: A global database of near-surface temperature

Current analyses and predictions of spatially explicit patterns and processes in ecology most often rely on climate data interpolated from standardized weather stations. This interpolated climate data represents long-term average thermal conditions at coarse spatial resolutions only. Hence, many climate-forcing factors that operate at fine spatiotemporal resolutions are overlooked. This is particularly important in relation to effects of observation height (e.g. vegetation, snow and soil characteristics) and in habitats varying in their exposure to radiation, moisture and wind (e.g. topography, radiative forcing or cold-air pooling). Since organisms living close to the ground relate more strongly to these microclimatic conditions than to free-air temperatures, microclimatic ground and near-surface data are needed to provide realistic forecasts of the fate of such organisms under anthropogenic climate change, as well as of the functioning of the ecosystems they live in. To fill this critical gap, we highlight a call for temperature time series submissions to SoilTemp, a geospatial database initiative compiling soil and near-surface temperature data from all over the world. Currently, this database contains time series from 7,538 temperature sensors from 51 countries across all key biomes. The database will pave the way toward an improved global understanding of microclimate and bridge the gap between the available climate data and the climate at fine spatiotemporal resolutions relevant to most organisms and ecosystem processes.

Century-long apparent decrease in intrinsic water-use efficiency with no evidence of progressive nutrient limitation in African tropical forests

Forests exhibit leaf- and ecosystem-level responses to environmental changes. Specifically, rising carbon dioxide (CO₂ ) levels over the past century are expected to have increased the intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) of tropical trees while the ecosystem is gradually pushed into progressive nutrient limitation. Due to the long-term character of these changes, however, observational datasets to validate both paradigms are limited in space and time. In this study, we used a unique herbarium record to go back nearly a century and show that despite the rise in CO₂ concentrations, iWUE has decreased in central African tropical trees in the Congo Basin. Although we find evidence that points to leaf-level adaptation to increasing CO₂ -that is, increasing photosynthesis-related nutrients and decreasing maximum stomatal conductance, a decrease in leaf δ¹³ C clearly indicates a decreasing iWUE over time. Additionally, the stoichiometric carbon to nitrogen and nitrogen to phosphorus ratios in the leaves show no sign of progressive nutrient limitation as they have remained constant since 1938, which suggests that nutrients have not increasingly limited productivity in this biome. Altogether, the data suggest that other environmental factors, such as increasing temperature, might have negatively affected net photosynthesis and consequently downregulated the iWUE. Results from this study reveal that the second largest tropical forest on Earth has responded differently to recent environmental changes than expected, highlighting the need for further on-ground monitoring in the Congo Basin.

Determining tributary sources of increased sedimentation in East-African Rift Lakes

Temporal and spatial sediment dynamics in an East-African Rift Lake (Lake Manyara, Tanzania), and its river inputs, have been evaluated via a combination of sediment tracing and radioactive dating. Changes in sedimentation rates were assessed using radioactive dating of sediment cores in combination with geochemical profile analysis of allogenic and autogenic elements. Geochemical fingerprinting of riverine and lake sediment was integrated within a Bayesian mixing model framework, including spatial factors, to establish which tributary sources were the main contributors to recent lake sedimentation. The novel application of Bayesian source attribution on sediment cores and subsequent integration with sedimentation data permitted the coupling of changes in the rate of lake sedimentation with variations in sediment delivery from the tributaries. These complimentary evidence bases demonstrated that Lake Manyara has experienced an overall upward trajectory in sedimentation rates over the last 120 years with distinct maxima between 0.80 and 0.85 g cm^-2 yr^-1 in the 1960s and between 0.84 and 1.81 g cm^-2 yr^-1 in 2010. Increased sedimentation rates are largely a result of a complex interaction between increased upstream sediment delivery following changes in land cover and natural rainfall fluctuations. Modelling results identified two specific tributaries as responsible for elevated sedimentation rates, contributing 58% and 38% of the recently deposited lake sediment. However, the effects of sedimentation were shown to be spatially distinct given the domination of different tributaries in various areas of Lake Manyara. The application of source-tracing techniques constrained sedimentation problems in Lake Manyara to specific tributary sources and established a link between upstream land degradation and downstream ecosystem health. This novel application provides a solid foundation for targeted land and water management strategies to safeguard water security and environmental health in Lake Manyara and has potential application to fill knowledge gaps on sediment dynamics in other East-African Rift Lakes.

Land use controls Kenyan riverine nitrate discharge into Lake Victoria - evidence from Nyando, Nzoia and Sondu Miriu river catchments

Nitrate (NO₃^-) sources and discharge were investigated using isotope and hydrochemical analyses in three river catchments draining Lake Victoria basin, Kenya. Hierarchical cluster analysis grouped Nyando, Nzoia and Sondu Miriu River stations into clusters corresponding to major land use classes of the catchments. Mixed agriculture (MA) in Nyando showed higher NO₃^- compared to the other land uses. Nitrate levels obtained (0.1-11.6 mg L^-1) are higher than those reported in previous studies. Hydrochemistry support isotope data indicating that ammonium-based fertilizers and soil N were the major NO₃^- sources in tea dominated areas with average δ¹⁵N (6.5 ± 1.3 ‰), δ¹⁸O (6.7 ± 2.3 ‰) values. Manure/sewage were the main source in MA areas with average δ¹⁵N (8.4 ± 2.4 ‰), δ¹⁸O (7.8 ± 5.4 ‰) values. Sewage was the likely source in urban, residential & industrial areas recording average δ¹⁵N (10.0 ± 2.4 ‰), δ¹⁸O (6.9 ± 3.7 ‰) values. δ¹⁵N between land uses were significantly different (p < 0.0001) while δ¹⁸O were similar (p = 0.4). Seasonally, inorganic/organic fertilizers influenced river NO₃^- mostly in the wet cropping season. Lower NO₃^- concentrations observed in Nyando and Sondu Miriu during dry or start-wet season could be a result of in situ denitrification.

Sensitivity of source apportionment predicted by a Bayesian tracer mixing model to the inclusion of a sediment connectivity index as an informative prior: Illustration using the Kharka catchment (Nepal)

Long-chain saturated fatty acid (LCSFA) isotopic composition in tandem with Bayesian isotope mixing models (BIMM) can provide insight into land use-based sediment sources in catchment systems. Apportioning sediment sources robustly, however, requires careful consideration of how additional factors including topography, surface cover and land use practices interact to influence contributions from individual sources. Prior knowledge can be used in BIMM; however, the full capacity of this functionality has not been thoroughly exploited yet in conjunction with sediment fingerprinting. In response, we propose an approach for applying a state-of-the-art BIMM incorporating a sediment connectivity index (SCI) as an informative prior for sediment source apportionment in a highly hydrodynamic catchment in Nepal. A library of LCSFA carbon isotopic composition was constructed for surface soils collected from mixed forest, upland and lowland terraces in the Kharka micro-catchment. δ¹³C values of LCSFA of time-integrated suspended bulk (<2 mm) sediment were depleted by 4‰ compared to the fine (<0.063 mm) sediment fraction. Conventional source apportionment for fine sediment samples without the SCI informative prior suggested that 66% of the sediment is derived from forest soils followed by lowland (19%) and upland (15%) terraces. Incorporation of the SCI as an informative prior in BIMM, however, modified the original source apportionment estimates to 90%, 9% and 1% respectively. The lower contributions from agricultural terraces are explained by landscape complexity comprising small levelled terraces that reduce hillslope-to-channel sediment connectivity. This study demonstrates the sensitivity of BIMM posterior distributions to incorporation of an informative prior based on a SCI. Inclusion of SCI linked to land use and management can provide a more physically-grounded approach to estimating sediment source contributions from biogeochemical tracers, and critically one which generates results better reflecting what makes good environmental sense in the context of land management and visual evidence of sediment mobilisation and delivery.

Microbial Protein out of Thin Air: Fixation of Nitrogen Gas by an Autotrophic Hydrogen-Oxidizing Bacterial Enrichment

For the production of edible microbial protein (MP), ammonia generated by the Haber-Bosch process or reclaimed ammonia from waste streams is typically considered as the nitrogen source. These processes for ammonia production are highly energy intensive. In this study, the potential for using nitrogen gas (N₂) as a direct nitrogen source for MP production by hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria (HOB) was evaluated. The use of N₂ versus ammonium as nitrogen source during the enrichment process resulted in differentiation of the bacterial community composition of the enrichments. A few previously unknown potential N₂-fixing HOB taxa (i.e., representatives of the genus Azonexus and the family Comamonadaceae) dominated the enrichments. The biomass yield of a N₂-fixing HOB enrichment was 30-50% lower than that of the ammonium-based HOB enrichment from the same inoculum source. The dried biomass of N₂-fixing HOB had a high protein content (62.0 ± 6.3%) and an essential amino acid profile comparable to MP from ammonium-based HOB. MP from N₂-fixing HOB could potentially be produced in situ without entailing the emissions caused by ammonia production and transportation by conventional means. It could be a promising substitute for N₂-fixing protein-rich soybean because it has 70% higher protein content and double energy conversion efficiency from solar energy to biomass.

Sediment source fingerprinting: benchmarking recent outputs, remaining challenges and emerging themes

PURPOSE

This review of sediment source fingerprinting assesses the current state-of-the-art, remaining challenges and emerging themes. It combines inputs from international scientists either with track records in the approach or with expertise relevant to progressing the science.

METHODS

Web of Science and Google Scholar were used to review published papers spanning the period 2013-2019, inclusive, to confirm publication trends in quantities of papers by study area country and the types of tracers used. The most recent (2018-2019, inclusive) papers were also benchmarked using a methodological decision-tree published in 2017.

SCOPE

Areas requiring further research and international consensus on methodological detail are reviewed, and these comprise spatial variability in tracers and corresponding sampling implications for end-members, temporal variability in tracers and sampling implications for end-members and target sediment, tracer conservation and knowledge-based pre-selection, the physico-chemical basis for source discrimination and dissemination of fingerprinting results to stakeholders. Emerging themes are also discussed: novel tracers, concentration-dependence for biomarkers, combining sediment fingerprinting and age-dating, applications to sediment-bound pollutants, incorporation of supportive spatial information to augment discrimination and modelling, aeolian sediment source fingerprinting, integration with process-based models and development of open-access software tools for data processing.

CONCLUSIONS

The popularity of sediment source fingerprinting continues on an upward trend globally, but with this growth comes issues surrounding lack of standardisation and procedural diversity. Nonetheless, the last 2 years have also evidenced growing uptake of critical requirements for robust applications and this review is intended to signpost investigators, both old and new, towards these benchmarks and remaining research challenges for, and emerging options for different applications of, the fingerprinting approach.
