Abstract
The European Green Deal aims to reduce the pesticide use, notably by developing biocontrol products to protect crops from diseases. Indeed, the use of significant amounts of chemicals negatively impact the environment such as soil microbial biodiversity or groundwater quality, and human health. Grapevine (Vitis vinifera) was selected as one of the first targeted crop due to its economic importance and its dependence on fungicides to control the main damaging diseases worldwide: grey mold, downy and powdery mildews. Chitosan, a biopolymer extracted from crustacean exoskeletons, has been used as a biocontrol agent in many plant species, including grapevine, against a variety of cryptogamic diseases such as downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola), powdery mildew (Erysiphe necator) and grey mold (Botrytis cinerea). However, the precise molecular mechanisms underlying its mode of action remain unclear: is it a direct biopesticide effect or an indirect elicitation activity, or both? In this study, we investigated six chitosans with diverse degrees of polymerization (DP) ranging from low to high DP (12, 25, 33, 44, 100, and 470). We scrutinized their biological activities by evaluating both their antifungal properties and their abilities to induce grapevine immune responses. To investigate their elicitor activity, we analyzed their ability to induce MAPKs phosphorylation, the activation of defense genes and metabolite changes in grapevine. Our results indicate that the chitosans with a low DP are more effective in inducing grapevine defenses and possess the strongest biopesticide effect against B. cinerea and P. viticola. We identified chitosan with DP12 as the most efficient resistance inducer. Then, chitosan DP12 has been tested against downy and powdery mildews in the vineyard trials performed during the last three years. Results obtained indicated that a chitosan-based biocontrol product could be sufficiently efficient when the amount of pathogen inoculum is quite low and could be combined with only two fungicide treatments during whole season programs to obtain a good protection efficiency. On the whole, a chitosan-based biocontrol product could become an interesting alternative to meet the chemicals reduction targeted in sustainable viticulture.

Abstract
Power transformers are essential apparatuses used to transfer electrical energy from one voltage-level circuit to another. For reliable systems, preventive maintenance of the transformers is required to ensure good services of all mechanical, electrical, and insulation parts. Oil-immersed paper is most often used for transformer insulation. To ensure such good insulation performance and for assessing insulation conditions, advanced transformer sensing, monitoring, and effective assessment techniques are required. This paper introduces an effective technique for assessing the insulation conditions in power transformers, which are crucial for ensuring reliable energy transfer. The method utilizes advanced transformer sensing and monitoring, focusing on oil-immersed paper insulation commonly used in transformers. The technique employs dielectric response sensing, obtained from frequency-domain spectroscopy tests, to estimate degrees of polymerization (DP) and percentages of moisture content (PMCs) in the oil-immersed paper insulation. These parameters are well-known indicators of insulation performance. The approach is based on the weighted k-nearest neighbor regression, using a database of dielectric loss factors at low frequency and oil conductivities. To overcome limited data availability, linear interpolation and extrapolation techniques are applied to enlarge the database. Experimental verification and comparison with a previously developed method demonstrate the proposed technique's superiority in accuracy and complexity. The maximum deviations of DP and PMC in the validation cases are 6.2% and 18.7%, respectively. In addition, to evaluate the validity of our proposed method in the case of a real power transformer, a comparative analysis of the DP and PMC values determined by the proposed method with those obtained through a previously developed and complicated approach was performed. The predicted results indicate that the DP and PMC values of the oil-immersed insulation fall within the ranges of 800 to 1000 and 1.5 to 2.0, respectively, which agree with the results determined by the complicated approach and closely align with real conditions. By offering a reliable and advanced means of assessing insulation conditions, this technique contributes to the preventive maintenance and overall efficiency of power transformers.

Abstract
Konjac glucomannan (KGM) is a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide that was originally extracted from the corms (underground storage organs) of Amorphophallus konjac. KGM and its oligomers have been reported as dietary fibers that exhibit an array of health benefits. The depolymerization of KGM via enzymatic hydrolysis at different conditions gives products of low viscosity and can be used for coating materials in microencapsulation. In the present study, konjac glucomannan hydrolysates (KGMHs) were produced by enzymatic hydrolysis using commercial mannanase at pH 4.5 at 70 °C for 5-120 min, then KGMHs' molecular weight (Mw), Degree of Polymerization (DP) and their bioactivities were determined. A longer hydrolysis time resulted in KGMH of a lower DP. Oligoglucomannans (Mw < 10,000) could be obtained after hydrolysis for 20 min. The DP of KGMH rapidly decreased during an early stage of the hydrolysis (first 40 min); DP reached around 7 at the end of the hydrolysis. Antioxidant activities were determined by the DPPH radical scavenging and FRAP assays of KGMHs prepared at pH 4.5 and evaluated at pH 2.0-8.0 depending on pH. KGMH having lower Mw exhibited higher antioxidant activities. KGMHs having the smallest molecular weight (Mw = 419) exhibited the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity. Mw and pH have a greater impact on KGMHs' bioactivities which can be useful information for KGMHs as functional ingredients.

Abstract
A simple and compact intensity-interrogated terahertz (THz) relative humidity (RH) sensing platform is successfully demonstrated in experiments on the basis of combining a porous polymer sensing membrane and a continuous THz electronic system. The RH-sensing membrane is fabricated by surface modification of a porous polymer substrate with hydrophilic and photosensitive copolymer brushes via a UV-induced graft-polymerization process. The intensity interrogation sensing scheme indicated that the power reduction of the 0.4 THz wave is dependent on the grafting density of the copolymer brushes and proportional to the RH percent levels in the humidity-controlled air-sealed chamber. This finding was verified by the water contact angle measurement. Based on the slope of the proportional relation, the best sensitivity of the hydrophilic surface-modified sensing membrane was demonstrated at 0.0423 mV/% RH at the copolymer brush density of 1.57 mg/mm3 grafted on the single side of the sensing membrane. The sensitivity corresponds to a detection limit of approximately 1% RH. The THz RH sensing membrane was proven to exhibit the advantages of low loss, low cost, flexibility, high sensitivity, high RH resolution, and a wide RH working range of 25-99%. Thus, it is a good candidate for novel applications of wearable electronics, water- or moisture-related industrial and bio-sensing.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that humans can taste maltooligosaccharides [MOS; degree of polymerization (DP) of 3-20] but not maltopolysaccharides (MPS; DP of >20) and that their taste detection is independent of the canonical sweet taste receptor. The objectives of this study were to determine the DP ranges of target stimuli that are tasted and further to investigate the impact of DP on taste detectability. To achieve this goal, we prepared three food-grade MOS samples with narrow DP ranges using flash chromatography: low (4-6), medium (7-12), and high (14-21) DP samples. Following sample preparation, we asked subjects to discriminate the MOS stimuli from blanks after the stimuli were swabbed on the tip of tongue. All stimuli were initially presented at 75 mM. Acarbose, an α-glucosidase inhibitor, was added to all stimuli, including blanks, to prevent oral hydrolysis of MOS. After determining that all three MOS samples were detected at a significant degree, we conducted follow-up studies to explore whether the detection of these samples differed at a range of concentrations (18-56 mM). The results showed that detection rates of medium- and high-DP MOS varied in a concentration-dependent manner (p < 0.05). In contrast, low-DP MOS showed a consistent detection rate across concentrations tested. These results demonstrate that humans can taste MOS stimuli of all chain lengths and that relative taste detection rates are generally similar across MOS with varying chain lengths.

Abstract
This work evaluates the effect of using selected inorganic chemicals as the main components of waterborne wood preservative systems on the degradation of the cellulose constituent in wood from model samples. The polymeric properties of cellulose and the homogeneity of the degradation process primarily reflect very well the degree of cellulose deterioration. Whatman papers, as pure cellulose model samples, were impregnated with 10 different 5 wt% solutions of inorganic salts and distilled water and consequently subjected to wet-thermal accelerated aging (T = 85 °C, RH = 65%, for 30 days). The samples were then derivatized to cellulose tricarbanilates (CTCs) through two different procedures (by precipitation in a methanol-water mixture/by evaporation of pyridine from the reaction mixture) and finally analyzed using size exclusion chromatography (SEC). Chemically treated and aged cellulose samples showed different changes in the degree of polymerization (DP) and polydispersity (PD) in terms of untreated non-aged standard caused by different ongoing degradation reactions, such as dehydration, hydrolysis, oxidation, and crosslinking. In general, the lowest degradation rate after treatment by chemicals and after accelerated aging was observed in samples treated by borates, NaCl, and ZnSO4·7H2O. The greatest depolymerization after treatment and after accelerated aging was caused by sulphates containing NH4+, Cu2+, and Fe3+ cations, with aging by NH4Cl and (NH4)2HPO4-treated samples also leading to significant depolymerization. The higher DP values are linked to the precipitated method of CTC preparation, though not for chlorides and phosphates. PD is also generally higher in precipitated and aged samples and is heavily influenced by the presence of low molecular weight products. This paper brings new insights regarding the complex evaluation of the polymeric properties of degraded cellulose by considering all important factors affecting the sample and the analysis itself through the use of statistics. From the statistical point of view, the influences of all factors (solution, aging, method) and their interactions (except aging*method) on DP are statistically significant. The influence of the sample processing method used for analysis of the desired results becomes important mainly in practice. This work recommends the evaporation method for more accurate description of more degraded cellulose.

Abstract
Commercial fructans (inulin and oligofructose) are generally obtained from crops such as chicory, Jerusalem artichoke or agave. However, there are agricultural by-products, namely asparagus roots, which could be considered potential sources of fructans. In this work, the fructans extracted from asparagus roots and three commercial ones from chicory and agave were studied in order to compare their composition, physicochemical characteristics, and potential health effects. Asparagus fructans had similar chemical composition to the others, especially in moisture, simple sugars and total fructan contents. However, its contents of ash, protein and phenolic compounds were higher. FTIR analysis confirmed these differences in composition. Orafti®GR showed the highest degree of polymerization (DP) of up to 40, with asparagus fructans (up to 25) falling between Orafti®GR and the others (DP 10-11). Although asparagus fructan powder had a lower fructan content and lower DP than Orafti®GR, its viscosity was higher, probably due to the presence of proteins. The existence of phenolic compounds lent antioxidant activity to asparagus fructans. The prebiotic activity in vitro of the four samples was similar and, in preliminary assays, asparagus fructan extract presented health effects related to infertility and diabetes diseases. All these characteristics confer a great potential for asparagus fructans to be included in the prebiotics market.

Abstract
Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) and Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) have a heterogeneous collection of fructose polymers, known as inulin. This study was aimed to explore the effects of ultrasound (US) and autoclave (AC) on inulin physico-chemical properties as well as investigate structural characterizations and relationships with inulin physico-chemical properties. More specifically, Jerusalem artichoke powder (JA, 69.99% inulin in dry basis), purified inulin from Jerusalem artichoke (PJAI) and chicory inulin (CI) were studied to determine the effects of both treatments on reducing sugar contents, degree of polymerization (DP), water-holding capacity (WHC) and particle size. US (90 W, 20 KHZ) treatments had increased reducing sugar content up to 12.27% for PJAI, 10.86% for JA powder and 2.18% for CI. HPLC analysis showed that the DP of inulin decreased for PJAI after 2 min US treatment. WHC analysis showed that both treatments did not have significant effects (p > .05) on WHC for JA powder. This study suggests that US can be a preferable treatment for reducing the DP of inulin from JA for designing variety of food formulations. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Ultrasound treatments could result in more inulin breaking down into reducing sugars, and in the decrease of inulin DP. This research suggested that the DP of inulin might be a very important factor in ultrasound treatment for their affect in the absorption of energy from ultrasound. Therefore, ultrasound can be a desirable treatment for changing the degree of polymerization of inulin from JA for designing different food products. Future studies need to investigate the relationship between the viscosity of inulin solution and the de-polymerization of inulin caused by ultrasound treatment.

Abstract
Asparagus roots are by-products from asparagus cultivation and they could be considered one of the best sources of fructans. These polymers are interesting food ingredients for their prebiotic and immuno-stimulating characteristics. The aim of this work is to characterize the fructan profile from the roots of several asparagus varieties grown at different locations and pickled at three vegetative statuses in order to valorize these by-products as fructan source. Fructans were extracted with hot water and fractionated into three pools according to their molecular weight (MW). Their average MW was studied by HPSEC and their degree of polymerization by HPAEC. The fructan content was up to 12.5% on fresh weight basis, depending on variety and sampling date. The relative abundance of the three pools also depended on the picking moment as after the spear harvest period their total content and MW increased. The average MW of the three fractions was similar among varieties with 4.8, 8.4 and 9 sugar units, although fructans up to 30 units were identified by HPAEC. These characteristics make them similar to the commercialized Orafti®-GR inulin, a common additive to food products. Therefore, the concept of asparagus roots as cultivation waste must be changed to a new feedstock for sustainable agriculture and industry.

Abstract
The available research does not allow specific relationships to be established between the applied enzymatic-mechanical treatment, the degree of polymerization, and the characteristics of the cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) produced. This work aims to establish specific relationships between the intensity of enzymatic treatment, the degree of polymerization of the cellulose, the morphology of CNFs, and the tensile strength of the CNF films. It is determined that the decrease in the degree of polymerization plays an essential role in the fibrillation processes of the cell wall to produce CNFs and that there is a linear relationship between the degree of polymerization and the length of CNFs, which is independent of the type of enzyme, enzyme charge, and intensity of the applied mechanical treatment. In addition, it is determined that the percentage of the decrease in the degree of polymerization of CNFs due to mechanical treatment is irrespective of the applied enzyme charge. Finally, it is shown that the aspect ratio is a good indicator of the efficiency of the fibrillation process, and is directly related to the mechanical properties of CNF films.

Abstract
Three alkaline mixtures (NaOH/thiourea, NaOH/urea/thiourea, NaOH/urea/ZnO) and sulfuric acid were used at low temperatures as cellulose solvents, and their cellulose solubility and films’ physical properties for bleached chemical wood pulps and cotton linter were compared. Their degree of polymerization (DP) was controlled to 600–800 before dissolution. Among the alkaline solvents, NaOH/urea/ZnO gave the film the highest tensile strength and stretch. When compared to sulfuric acid, NaOH/urea/ZnO gave lower strength properties but higher crystallinity indices in the films. While alkaline solvents could not dissolve the high DP cellulose (DP ~ 2000), sulfuric acid could dissolve the high DP cellulose at below zero Celsius temperature, and the strength properties of the films were not much different from that of the low DP one. It appeared that the low-temperature sulfuric acid treatment did away with the cellulose’s DP controlling stage; it decreased cellulose DP very quickly for the high-DP cellulose at the initial stage, and as soon as the cellulose DP reached a DP low enough for dissolution, it began to dissolve the cellulose to result in stable cellulose solution.

Abstract
Flavanols, a subgroup of polyphenols, are secondary metabolites with antioxidant properties naturally produced in various plants (e.g., green tea, cocoa, grapes, and apples); they are a major polyphenol class in human foods and beverages, and have recognized effect on maintaining human health. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate their changes (i.e., oxidation, polymerization, degradation, and epimerization) during various physical processing (i.e., heating, drying, mechanical shearing, high-pressure, ultrasound, and radiation) to improve the nutritional value of food products. However, the roles of flavanols, in particular for their polymerized forms, are often underestimated, for a large part because of analytical challenges: they are difficult to extract quantitatively, and their quantification demands chemical reactions. This review examines the existing data on the effects of different physical processing techniques on the content of flavanols and highlights the changes in epimerization and degree of polymerization, as well as some of the latest acidolysis methods for proanthocyanidin characterization and quantification. More and more evidence show that physical processing can affect content but also modify the structure of flavanols by promoting a series of internal reactions. The most important reactivity of flavanols in processing includes oxidative coupling and rearrangements, chain cleavage, structural rearrangements (e.g., polymerization, degradation, and epimerization), and addition to other macromolecules, that is, proteins and polysaccharides. Some acidolysis methods for the analysis of polymeric proanthocyanidins have been updated, which has contributed to complete analysis of proanthocyanidin structures in particular regarding their proportion of A-type proanthocyanidins and their degree of polymerization in various plants. However, future research is also needed to better extract and characterize high-polymer proanthocyanidins, whether in their native or modified forms.

Abstract
The effects of three types of polymeric proanthocyanidins (PPC) with different degrees of polymerization (DP), namely PPC1 (DP = 6.39 ± 0.13), PPC2 (DP = 8.21 ± 0.76), and PPC3 (DP = 9.92 ± 0.21), on the physicochemical characteristics and in vitro starch digestibility of potato starch were studied. PPC addition (5%, w/w) increased the gelatinization temperature and decreased some viscosity indices of potato starch, including the peak, trough, breakdown, and setback viscosities. Starch-PPC pastes showed reduced thixotropy and improved stability and gelling properties compared to starch paste. The three types of proanthocyanidins all showed evident inhibitory effects on the digestion and retrogradation of potato starch, including short-term and long-term retrogradation. Among the three, PPC with a lower DP had stronger effects on the starch short-term retrogradation and gelling performance, whereas larger PPC molecules exhibited a greater impact on starch recrystallization and digestive characteristics. The research consequences were conducive to explore the application of functional PPC in starch-based food processing.

Abstract
Euterpe oleracea Mart. (Arecaceae) is an endogenous palm tree from the Amazon region. Its seeds correspond to 85% of the fruit’s weight, a primary solid residue generated from pulp production, the accumulation of which represents a potential source of pollution and environmental problems. As such, this work aimed to quantify and determine the phytochemical composition of E. oleracea Mart. seeds from purple, white, and BRS-Pará açaí varieties using established analytical methods and also to evaluate it as an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor. The proanthocyanidin quantification (n-butanol/hydrochloric acid assay) between varieties was 6.4–22.4 (w/w)/dry matter. Extract characterization showed that all varieties are composed of B-type procyanidin with a high mean degree of polymerization (mDP ≥ 10) by different analytical methodologies to ensure the results. The purple açaí extract, which presented 22.4% (w/w) proanthocyanidins/dry matter, was tested against corrosion of carbon steel AISI 1020 in neutral pH. The crude extract (1.0 g/L) was effective in controlling corrosion on the metal surface for 24 h. Our results demonstrated that the extracts rich in polymeric procyanidins obtained from industrial açaí waste could be used to inhibit carbon steel AISI 1020 in neutral pH as an abundant, inexpensive, and green source of corrosion inhibitor.

Abstract
Cellulases are a group of enzymes responsible for the degradation of cellulose, which is one of the most abundant polymers on Earth. The three main groups of cellulases are endoglucosidases, exoglucosidases, and β-glucosidases; however, the mechanism of induction of these enzymes remains poorly characterized. Cellooligosaccharides are among the main inducers of these enzymes in filamentous fungi, yet it is not clear how their degree of polymerization may affect the strength of induction. In the present study, we investigated the effect of different carbohydrate-based inducers, such as lactose, sophorose, cellooligosaccharides, and xylooligosacharides, characterized by different concentrations and degree of polymerization, on cellulases production by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici, which is one of the most studied lignocellulose degrading fungi with the ability to consume both cellulose and hemicellulose. Moreover, the effect of carbon source on cellulase induction was assessed by growing the biomass on sucrose or glycerol. Results showed a correlation between induction efficiency and the cellooligosaccharides' concentration and size, as well as the carbon source available. Specifically, cellotetraose was a better inducer when sucrose was the carbon source, while cellobiose yielded a better result on glycerol. These findings can help optimize industrial cellulase production.

Abstract
In this study, an analysis of the influence of polymer modification on the mechanical behavior, porosity, and microstructure of mortar is carried out. Epoxy latexes contents of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% of cement were employed in the preparation of cement mortars based on the same workability. The specimens were subjected to dry, wet, and wet–dry curing regimes. Compressive strength, flexural strength, Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), and scanning electronic microscope (SEM) tests were conducted to analyze the effect of epoxy latexes on the mechanical property and porosity of modified mortars. Based on the compressive strength test results, a quantitative method was established to calculated the degree of hydration and polymerization. The results show that the mechanical behavior and porosity property of epoxy latexes modified mortar are influenced by the degree of hydration, the degree of polymerization, and the volume changing effect of mortar. The polymerization of epoxy latexes could improve the flexural strength of the mortar. The macropores of specimens tended to decrease with the increase of the degree of epoxy latexes polymerization and cement hydration. In practical engineering, it is necessary to ensure the degree of hydration and increase the polymerization rate. Thus, the wet–dry curing regime is recommended.

Abstract
Methodology combining mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) with ion mobility separation (IMS) has emerged as a biological imaging technique due to its versatility, sensitivity and label-free approach. This technique has been shown to separate isomeric compounds such as lipids, amino acids, carboxylic acids and carbohydrates. This report describes mass spectrometry imaging in combination with traveling-wave ion mobility separation and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI). Positive ionization mode was used to locate fructans on tissue printed sections of Agave rhizome and stem tissue and distinguished fructan isoforms. Here we show the location of fructans ranging from DP3 to DP17 to be differentially abundant across the stem tissue and for the first time, experimental collision cross sections of endogenous fructan structures have been collected, revealing at least two isoforms for fructans of DP4, DP5, DP6, DP7, DP8, DP10, and DP11. This demonstrates that complex fructans such as agavins can be located and their isoforms resolved using a combination of MALDI, IMS, and MSI, without the need for extraction or derivatization. Use of this methodology uncovered patterns of fructan localization consistent with functional differences where higher DP fructans are found toward the central section of the stem supporting a role in long term carbohydrate storage whereas lower DP fructans are concentrated in the highly vascularized central core of rhizomes supporting a role in mobilization of carbohydrates from the mother plant to developing offsets. Tissue specific patterns of expression of genes encoding enzymes involved in fructan metabolism are consistent with fructan structures and localization.

Abstract
Currently available proanthocyanidins extraction methods rely on dedicated crops and have low specificity and yield which limits their industrial application. Consequently, the development of novel methodologies and the use of sustainable sources is of great importance. Eutectic solvents have been proposed has good alternatives for conventional solvents due to their low price, easiness of preparation, biocompatibility and ability of being custom made to a specific application. Herein the effective extraction of proanthocyanidins from grape pomace and the possibility of tuning the extract's characteristics such as mean degree of polymerization and galloylation percentage is explored by means of varying the composition of a quaternary eutectic solvent composed by choline chloride, glycerol, ethanol and water. It was found that mean degree of polymerization values can vary from 6.0 to 7.37 and galloylation percentage can vary from 32.5% to 47.1% while maintaining extraction yield above 72.2 mg of proanthocyanidins per g of biomass. Furthermore, the increase of temperature up to 100 °C has showed a significant effect on the extraction yield being possible to increase it by 238% when compared to the conventional extraction method.

Abstract
Quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) approach has been widely used in predicting physicochemical properties of compounds. However, its application in the estimation of formulation properties based on the polymer used in it to achieve desired formulation characteristics is an extremely challenging process. In the present research, predictive QSPR models were developed by correlating the physicochemical properties of varying grades of cellulose ethers (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, HPMC) with those of nateglinide (NTG) containing tablets (in vitro and in vivo properties). Sustained release tablets of NTG were prepared by using different grades and concentrations of HPMC and subsequently characterized for in vitro as well as in vivo parameters. Further, QSPR models for individual formulation property were developed by correlating the polymeric physicochemical properties with the formulation characteristics. Subsequently, a true external validation method was used to validate the predictability of developed models. The dissolution study indicated Korsmeyer-Peppas as the best fit model following non-Fickian as drug transport mechanism extending the drug release up to 12 h. In vivo studies showed limited absorption of the NTG. Developed QSPR models showed promising validated predictability for formulation characteristics. The applicability of present work in formulation development could significantly reduce the time and cost expenditure on design trials without actually formulating a delivery system.

Abstract
Oligosaccharide, a typical danger-associated molecular pattern (DAMP), has been studied and applied as plant defence elicitor for several years. Here, we report a novel oligosaccharide, mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) with a degree of polymerization of 2-6, which was hydrolysed from locust bean gum by a newly reported enzyme, BpMan5. The MOS treatment can significantly enhance the generation of signalling molecules such as intracellular Ca2+ and reactive oxygen species. Subsequent defence events like stomata closure and cell death were also caused by MOS, eventually leading to the prevention of pathogen invasion or expansion. Transcriptional expression assay indicated that MOS activated mitogen-activated protein kinase cascades in tobacco and rice via different cascading pathways. The expression levels of the defence-related genes PR-1a and LOX were both up-regulated after MOS treatment, suggesting that MOS may simultaneously activate salicylic acid and jasmonic acid-dependent signalling pathways. Furthermore, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed that MOS led to the accumulation of four phytoalexins (momilactone A, phytocassane A, phytocassane D, and phytocassane E) in rice seedling leaves within 12-24 h. Finally, MOS conferred resistance in rice and tobacco against Xanthomonas oryzae and Phytophthora nicotianae, respectively. Taken together, our results indicated that MOS, a novel DAMP, could trigger multiple defence responses to prime plant resistance and has a great potential as plant defence elicitor for the management of plant disease.

Abstract
Polyurethane (PU) di-block copolymers are one of the most versatile polymeric materials, comprised of hard and soft segments that contribute to PU's broad range of applications. Polybutylene adipate (PBA) is a commonly used soft segment in PU systems. Characterizing the structure of PBA polymers is essential to understanding complex heterogeneity within a PU sample. In this study, ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) are used to structurally characterize a PBA standard (Mn = 2250) adducted with a combination of monovalent alkali cations (Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs). IM-MS profiles show unique trends associated with each cation-adducted PBA sample. Charge state trends: +1, +2, and +3 were extracted for cation-adducted PBA oligomers, and investigated to study gas-phase transitional folding. To quantitatively assess the gas-phase structural similarities and differences, a statistical test (ANOVA) was used to compare PBA oligomer-cation collisional cross sections (CCS). Fragmentation studies (MS/MS) identified the unique behavior of Li and Na for promoting 1,5 H-shift and 1,3 H-shift fragmentation, whereas the PBA precursor preferentially loses the larger K, Rb, and Cs cations as the ion activation energy is increased. The combination of adducted alkali cations, IM-MS, and MS/MS allow for unique structural characterization of this important PBA system.

Abstract
Due to the importance of proanthocyanidin bioactivity and its relationship with chemical structure, ultrasound-assisted extraction and purification schemes were proposed to evaluate the proanthocyanidin content and analyze the structural composition and potential bioactivities of different proanthocyanidin fractions from Chinese wild rice (Zizanialatifolia). Following an optimized extraction procedure, the crude wild rice proanthocyanidins (WRPs) were purified using n-butanol extraction, chromatography on macroporous resins, and further fractionation on Sephadex LH-20 to yield six specific fractions (WRPs-1–WRPs-6) containing proanthocyanidin levels exceeding 524.19 ± 3.56 mg/g extract. Structurally, (+)-catechin, (−)-epicatechin, and (−)-epigallocatechin were present as both terminal and extension units, and (−)-epicatechin was the major extension unit, in each fraction. This is the first preparation of WRP fractions with a different mean degree of polymerization (mDP), ranging from 2.66 ± 0.04 to 10.30 ± 0.46. A comparison of the bioactivities of these fractions revealed that fractions WRPs-1−WRPs-5 had significant DPPH radical scavenging activities, whereas fraction WRPs-6 with a high mDP showed better α-glucosidase and pancreatic lipase inhibitory effects. These findings should help define possible applications of WRPs to functional foods or nutraceuticals.

Abstract
Five oligochitosans with increasing degrees of polymerization (DPs), i.e., from chitotriose to chitoheptaose, were examined to clarify the structure-bioactivity relationship between the DPs of oligochitosans and their effects on the isoflavone metabolites, total phenolic and flavonoid contents (TPC and TFC, respectively), and antioxidant activity of soybean ( Glycine max) seeds during germination. Oligochitosans of different DPs exhibited varying influences on the TPC, TFC, and antioxidant activities of soybean seeds. Chitohexaose exerted a strong effect and significantly increased the aforementioned parameters in soybean seeds 72 h after germination. Genistin, malonylgenistin, and genistein were the main isoflavones found, and the genistin and genistein contents were significantly enhanced by 67.32% and 131.38%, respectively, after chitohexaose treatment. Several critical genes involved in the isoflavone biosynthesis (i.e., PAL, CHS, CHI, IFS) of soybeans treated with and without chitohexaose were analyzed, and results suggested that chitohexaose application could dramatically stimulate the transcription of these genes.

Abstract
This study presents an analytical method for the quantification of fermentable oligo-, di-, and monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs) in cereals and cereal-based products, considering diverse ingredients, such as different cereals in addition to wheat, pulses, or pseudocereals. All carbohydrates have been separated, identified, and quantified with a high-performance anion-exchange chromatographic system coupled with a pulsed amperometric detection (HPAEC-PAD). The total fructan content and the average degree of polymerization (DPav) have been determined after enzymatic hydrolysis to the monomers glucose and fructose, on the basis of the principle of the official method for fructan quantification in food products, AOAC 997.08. The methods for extraction, separation, and detection as well as fructan determination are based on several other studies and were modified in order to minimize interferences in the analysis. The method has been validated with regard to the limits of detection and quantification, the linearity, the repeatability, and the accuracy as well as the DPav of the fructans.

Abstract
The proanthocyanidins from ethanol extracts (80%, v/v) of Acacia mearnsii (A. mearnsii) bark on chemical-based and cellular antioxidant activity assays as well as carbolytic enzyme inhibitory activities were studied. About 77% of oligomeric proanthocyanidins in ethanol extracts of A. mearnsii bark were found by using normal-phase HPLC. In addition, HPLC-ESI-TOF/MS and MALDI-TOF/TOF MS analyses indicated that proanthocyanidins from A. mearnsii bark exhibited with a degree of polymerization ranging from 1 to 11. These results of combined antioxidant activity assays, as well as carbolytic enzyme inhibitory activities of proanthocyanidins from A. mearnsii bark, indicated an encouraging antioxidant capacity for the high polyphenol content and a potential for use as alternative drugs for lowering the glycemic response.

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the dentin bond strength and degree of polymerization of bulk-fill and methacrylate-based flowable composites. Materials and Methods: Dentin bond strength of composites was evaluated using the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) test. Five different composites were applied on flat dentin surfaces with self-etch and etch-and-rinse adhesives. Twenty microspecimens with a 1 mm2 cross-sectional area were prepared for each group (n = 20). The μTBS test was then applied. To measure the degree of polymerization of composites, eight cylindrical blocks were prepared (n = 8) from each composite. The surface microhardness of each composite was measured on the bottom and top surfaces, and a hardness ratio (HR) was calculated. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and the Tukey's honestly significant difference test (α = 0.05). Results: According to the μTBS test results, the SDR Etch-and-Rinse group exhibited the highest dentin bonding strength and the Aelita self-etch group exhibited the lowest (P < 0.05). HR measurement showed that all composite groups had a sufficient degree of polymerization at a 2-mm thickness, while only the SDR and Xtra-Base groups had sufficient polymerization at a 4-mm thickness. Conclusions: Bulk-fill composite demonstrates an even higher degree of polymerization of methacrylate-based flowable composite when applied in a 4-mm thickness.

Abstract
Biopolymers have become increasingly popular as biostimulators of plant growth. One of them, oligo-alginate, is a molecule that regulates plant biological processes and may be used in horticultural practice as a plant growth regulator. Biostimulators are mainly used to improve plant tolerance to abiotic stresses, including salinity. The aim of the study was to assess the effects of salinity and oligo-alginate of various molecular masses on the growth and physiological activity of Eucomis autumnalis. The species is an ornamental and medicinal plant that has been used for a long time in the traditional medicine of South Africa. The bulbs of E. autumnalis were coated using depolymerized sodium alginate of molecular mass 32,000; 42,000, and 64,000 g mol-1. All of these oligo-alginates fractions stimulated plant growth, and the effect was the strongest for the fraction of 32,000 g mol-1. This fraction was then selected for the second stage of the study, when plants were exposed to salt stress evoked by the presence of 100 mM NaCl. We found that the oligo-alginate coating mitigated the negative effects of salinity. Plants treated with the oligomer and watered with NaCl showed smaller reduction in the weight of the above-ground parts and bulbs, pigment content and antioxidant activity as compared with those not treated with the oligo-alginate. The study demonstrated for the first time that low molecular mass oligo-alginate may be used as plant biostimulator that limits negative effects of salinity in E. autumnalis.

Abstract
Pectins are the most complex polysaccharides of the plant cell wall. Based on the number of methylations, acetylations and glycosidic linkages present in their structures, it is estimated that up to 67 transferase activities are involved in pectin biosynthesis. Pectic galactans constitute a major part of pectin in the form of side-chains of rhamnogalacturonan-I. In Arabidopsis, galactan synthase 1 (GALS1) catalyzes the addition of galactose units from UDP-Gal to growing β-1,4-galactan chains. However, the mechanisms for obtaining varying degrees of polymerization remain poorly understood. In this study, we show that AtGALS1 is bifunctional, catalyzing both the transfer of galactose from UDP-α-d-Gal and the transfer of an arabinopyranose from UDP-β-l-Arap to galactan chains. The two substrates share a similar structure, but UDP-α-d-Gal is the preferred substrate, with a 10-fold higher affinity. Transfer of Arap to galactan prevents further addition of galactose residues, resulting in a lower degree of polymerization. We show that this dual activity occurs both in vitro and in vivo. The herein described bifunctionality of AtGALS1 may suggest that plants can produce the incredible structural diversity of polysaccharides without a dedicated glycosyltransferase for each glycosidic linkage.

Abstract
Apart from alkaloids, bioactive properties of Uncaria tomentosa L. have been attributed to its phenolic constituents. Although there are some reports concerning low-molecular-weight polyphenols in U. tomentosa, its polymeric phenolic composition has been scarcely studied. In this study, phenolic-rich extracts from leaves, stems, bark and wood (n = 14) of Uncaria tomentosa plants from several regions of Costa Rica were obtained and analysed in respect to their proanthocyanidin profile determined by a quadrupole-time-of-flight analyser (ESI-QTOF MS). Main structural characteristics found for U. tomentosa proanthocyanidins were: (a) monomer composition, including pure procyanidins (only composed of (epi)catechin units) and propelargonidins (only composed of (epi)afzelechin units) as well as mixed proanthocyanidins; and (b) degree of polymerization, from 3 up to 11 units. In addition, U. tomentosa phenolic extracts were found to exhibit reasonable antioxidant capacity (ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) values between 1.5 and 18.8 mmol TE/g) and antimicrobial activity against potential respiratory pathogens (minimum IC50 of 133 µg/mL). There were also found to be particularly cytotoxic to gastric adenocarcinoma AGS and colon adenocarcinoma SW620 cell lines. The results state the particularities of U. tomentosa proanthocyanidins and suggest the potential value of these extracts with prospective use as functional ingredients.

Abstract
In an effort to better understand the biomass recalcitrance, six natural poplar variants were selected as feedstocks based on previous sugar release analysis. Compositional analysis and physicochemical characterizations of these poplars were performed and the correlations between these physicochemical properties and enzymatic hydrolysis yield were investigated. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and 13 C solid state NMR were used to determine the degree of polymerization (DP) and crystallinity index (CrI) of cellulose, and the results along with the sugar release study indicated that cellulose DP likely played a more important role in enzymatic hydrolysis. Simons' stain revealed that the accessible surface area of substrate significantly varied among these variants from 17.3 to 33.2 mg g-1biomass as reflected by dye adsorption, and cellulose accessibility was shown as one of the major factors governing substrates digestibility. HSQC and 31 P NMR analysis detailed the structural features of poplar lignin variants. Overall, cellulose relevant factors appeared to have a stronger correlation with glucose release, if any, than lignin structural features. Lignin structural features, such as a phenolic hydroxyl group and the ratio of syringyl and guaiacyl (S/G), were found to have a more convincing impact on xylose release. Low lignin content, low cellulose DP, and high cellulose accessibility generally favor enzymatic hydrolysis; however, recalcitrance cannot be simply judged on any single substrate factor.

Abstract
Acetobacter xylinum produces both cellulase and bacterial cellulose, but some report believed that this cellulase activity does not decrease the degree of polymerization (DP) of bacterial cellulose during cultivation. A. xylinum subsp. sucrofermentans BPR2001 produces two enzymes that hydrolyze CM-cellulose and cellotriose, respectively. We examined the effect of the two cellulase activities on the DP of bacterial cellulose when bacterial cells were cultured with agitation at pH 4, where little cellulase is produced, and at pH 5, where much cellulase is produced. The weight-average degree of polymerization (DPw) of bacterial cellulose remained in the range of 14,000 of 16,000 during cultivation at pH 4, but at pH 5, the DPw decreased from 16,800 to 11,000. The mechanical strength of a sheet prepared from the bacterial cellulose produced at pH 4 was higher than those of BC produced at pH 5. These results suggest that the two cellulase activities cause the decrease in DP and deterioration of physical properties of bacterial cellulose seen during cultivation.

Abstract
Maltodextrin (MX) is an ingredient in high demand in the food industry, mainly for its useful physical properties which depend on the dextrose equivalent (DE). The DE has however been shown to be an inaccurate parameter for predicting the performance of the MXs in technological applications, hence commercial MXs were characterized by mass spectrometry (MS) to determine their molecular weight distribution (MWD) and degree of polymerization (DP). Samples were subjected to different water activities (aw). Water adsorption was similar at low aw, but radically increased with the DP at higher aw. The decomposition temperature (Td) showed some variations attributed to the thermal hydrolysis induced by the large amount of adsorbed water and the supplied heat. The glass transition temperature (Tg) linearly decreased with both, aw and DP. The microstructural analysis by X-ray diffraction showed that MXs did not crystallize with the adsorption of water, preserving their amorphous structure. The optical micrographs showed radical changes in the overall appearance of the MXs, indicating a transition from a glassy to a rubbery state. Based on these characterizations, different technological applications for the MXs were suggested.

Abstract
Control of the fine structure of transitory starch synthesized during the day in leaves is required for its normal degradation during the subsequent night. In this study, the molecular structure of transitory starch from Sorghum leaves over the diurnal cycle was characterized using size-exclusion chromatography. This is the first study of diurnal changes in the chain-length distribution (CLD) of amylopectin and amylose over the entire range of chain lengths, and in the size distribution of whole starch molecules. It was found that the outer layers of leaf starch granules, which were synthesized during the daytime and degraded during the night, contained more large molecules, including amylopectin with more short chains and more branching, than those in the inner layers. The outer layers also had lower amylose content. Starch molecular sizes in leaves are much smaller than in grain starch. The starch structures observed are likely to give optimal energy control during plant growth. Lack of this control may contribute to poor plant growth.

Abstract
Fructans are important vacuolar reserve carbohydrates with drought, cold, ROS and general abiotic stress mediating properties. They occur in 15% of all flowering plants and are believed to display health benefits as a prebiotic and dietary fiber. Fructans are synthesized by specific fructosyltransferases and classified based on the linkage type between fructosyl units. Inulins, one of these fructan types with β(2-1) linkages, are elongated by fructan:fructan 1-fructosyltransferases (1-FFT) using a fructosyl unit from a donor inulin to elongate the acceptor inulin molecule. The sequence identity of the 1-FFT of Viguiera discolor (Vd) and Helianthus tuberosus (Ht) is 91% although these enzymes produce distinct fructans. The Vd 1-FFT produces high degree of polymerization (DP) inulins by preferring the elongation of long chain inulins, in contrast to the Ht 1-FFT which prefers small molecules (DP3 or 4) as acceptor. Since higher DP inulins have interesting properties for industrial, food and medical applications, we report here on the influence of two amino acids on the high DP inulin production capacity of the Vd 1-FFT. Introducing the M19F and H308T mutations in the active site of the Vd 1-FFT greatly reduces its capacity to produce high DP inulin molecules. Both amino acids can be considered important to this capacity, although the double mutation had a much higher impact than the single mutations.

Abstract
Wood pulps with certain amounts of lignin were successfully dissolved in aqueous NaOH/urea solution by subjecting them to the dilute acid pretreatment. After the acid hydrolysis, viscosity-average degree of polymerization (DPv) of the pulps decreased. The results revealed that both the DPv and lignin contents influenced the dissolved proportions of wood pulps. When they were not so high, the wood pulps could almost completely dissolve with dissolved proportions >90%. In particular, the acid-pretreated unbleached kraft pulp with DPv of about 500 and lignin content of 6.9% could dissolve in NaOH/urea solvent and achieve a maximum pulp concentration of 4 wt % in the obtained lignocellulose solution. Moreover, the acid-pretreated bleached thermomechanical pulp with a high lignin content of 14.2% also almost completely dissolved. The lignocellulose films prepared from these wood pulp/NaOH/urea solutions exhibited good transparency and bendability, thus maybe promising as new biobased materials.

Abstract
Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) produces high levels of fructans as a mixture of oligosaccharides and polysaccharides with different degrees of polymerization (DP). The present study describes the analysis of the compositional changes in the full spectrum of fructans, fructan distribution between above ground biomass (top) and the roots, and the transcription of candidate genes involved in fructan metabolism during cold acclimation in perennial ryegrass variety "Veyo" and ecotype "Falster" from distinct geographical origins. We observed changes in fructan composition and induction of low-DP fructans, especially DP = 4, in both the top and the roots of "Veyo" and "Falster" in response to low-temperature stress. The accumulation of DP > 50 fructans was only apparent in the top tissues where the Lp1-FFT expression is higher compared to the roots in both "Veyo" and "Falster." Our results also show the accumulation and depolymerization of fructans with different DP, together with the induction of genes encoding fructosyltransferases and fructan exohydrolases in both "Veyo" and "Falster" during cold acclimation, supporting the hypothesis that fructan synthesis and depolymerization occurring simultaneously. The ecotype "Falster," adapted to cold climates, increased total fructan content and produced more DP > 7 fructans in the roots than the variety "Veyo," adapted to warmer climates. This indicates that high-DP fructan accumulation in roots may be an adaptive trait for plant recovery after abiotic stresses.

Abstract
Metabolism of flavanols (catechins, procyanidins) by gut microbiota has been extensively characterized. Comparatively little is known about accumulation of flavanols and their metabolites in the colon tissues, particularly during chronic exposure to low doses. Mice were fed low doses of cocoa flavanols for 12 weeks. Supplementation of the control diet with flavanols did not increase colonic tissue accumulation of flavanols nor microbial metabolites versus control. The type of cocoa flavanols did not affect colonic tissue accumulation of native flavanols or metabolites. Total phenolic content of the diets indicated that these results are not explained by background levels of undetected phenolics in the control diet. This is the longest known chronic flavanol feeding study to examine colonic tissue accumulation. Vast differences appear to exist between acute high doses and chronic low doses, to which gut microbiota and epithelium adapt. These results indicate that the fate of flavanols in the colon during chronic exposure is not fully understood.

Abstract
Eumelanin is a brown-black pigment comprising 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI) and its 2-carboxy derivative (DHICA), but the detailed structure of eumelanin is unclear. Chemical degradation is a powerful tool for analyzing melanin. H2 O2 oxidation degradation of eumelanin affords pyrrole-2,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (PTCA) and pyrrole-2,3-dicarboxylic acid (PDCA). The ratio of PDCA to PTCA provides information about the eumelanin structure. In this article, we propose simple equations on the basis of previous experimental results on dimer yields for evaluating the yields of PTCA and PDCA from any DHI oligomers. Assuming the chemical disorder model of DHI-melanin, we solve an equation where a theoretical expression for the ratio of PDCA to PTCA is set to the corresponding experimental value to obtain a plausible Poisson distribution of DHI oligomers. The results demonstrate that the main contributors to DHI-melanin are tetramers and pentamers as shown by the mass spectrometry.

Abstract
We earlier identified a developmental series of seven isoforms/polymorphs of microparticulate inulin by comparing non-covalent bonding strengths. Their pharmaceutical utility lies in the modulation of cellular immunity, exploited as vaccine adjuvants (Advax™) especially for delta inulin (DI). As such particles cannot be sterilized by filtration we explore the effect of (60)Co gamma radiation (GR) on inulin isoforms, particularly DI. Its adjuvant activity and overt physical properties were unaffected by normal GR sterilizing doses (up to 25kGy). Heating irradiated isoform suspensions near their critical dissolution temperature revealed increased solubility deduced to reflect a single lethal event in one component of a multi-component structure. Local oxidative effects of GR on DI were not found. The observed DI loss was almost halved by re-annealing at the critical temperature: surviving inulin chains apparently reassemble into smaller amounts of the original type of structure. Colorimetric tetrazolium assay revealed increases in reducing activity after GR of raw inulin powder, which yielded DI with normal physical properties but only 25% normal recovery yet 4× normal reducing ability, implying final retention of some GR-changed inulin chains. These findings suggest minimal inulin chain cleavage and confirm that GR may be a viable strategy for terminal sterilization of microparticulate inulin adjuvants.

Abstract
Roundabout 1 (Robo1) is the cognate receptor for secreted axon guidance molecule, Slits, which function to direct cellular migration during neuronal development and angiogenesis. The Slit2-Robo1 signaling is modulated by heparan sulfate, a sulfated linear polysaccharide that is abundantly expressed on the cell surface and in the extracellular matrix. Biochemical studies have further shown that heparan sulfate binds to both Slit2 and Robo1 facilitating the ligand-receptor interaction. The structural requirements for heparan sulfate interaction with Robo1 remain unknown. In this report, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy was used to examine the interaction between Robo1 and heparin and other GAGs and determined that heparin binds to Robo1 with an affinity of ~650 nM. SPR solution competition studies with chemically modified heparins further determined that although all sulfo groups on heparin are important for the Robo1-heparin interaction, the N-sulfo and 6-O-sulfo groups are essential for the Robo1-heparin binding. Examination of differently sized heparin oligosaccharides and different GAGs also demonstrated that Robo1 prefers to bind full-length heparin chains and that GAGs with higher sulfation levels show increased Robo1 binding affinities.

Abstract
Hydroxyapatite (HAP), a highly specific component of bone tissue, is the main target in order to impart osteotropicity. Bone targeted nanoparticles can increase the strength of the interaction with HAP through multivalency and thus constitute a valuable strategy in the therapeutics of skeletal diseases. PBLG10k-b-PEG6k-alendronate nanoparticles (~ 75 nm) were prepared by a simple nanoprecipitation method. The calcium affinity (KCa(+2)=1.8 × 10(4)M(-1)) of these nanoparticles was evaluated using isothermal titration calorimetry. The multivalent interaction with HAP surfaces (KHAP) was studied by fluorescence and was estimated to be 1.1 × 10(10)M(-1), which is more than 4000 times stronger than the reported monovalent interaction between alendronate and HAP surfaces. Molecular modeling suggests that the number of binding sites available at the HAP surface is in large excess than what is required for the whole surface coverage by alendronate decorated nanoparticles. The lower calcium affinity of these nanoparticles than for HAP allows calcium bound nanoparticles to interact with HAP, which yields a deeper understanding of bone targeted carriers and could potentially improve their bone targeting properties.

Abstract
Enzymatic depolymerization of heparin by heparinases is promising for production of low molecular weight heparins (LMWHs) as anticoagulants, due to its mild reaction conditions and high selectivity. Here, different heparinase combinations were used to depolymerize heparin. Heparinase I and heparinase II can depolymerize heparin more efficiently than heparinase III, respectively, but heparinase III was the best able to protect the anticoagulant activities of LMWHs. Heparinase III and heparinase I/II combinations were able to efficiently depolymerize heparin to LMWHs with higher anticoagulant activity than the LMWHs produced by the respective heparinase I and heparinase II. HepIII and HepI is the best combination for maintaining high anti-IIa activity (75.7 ± 4.21 IU/mg) at the same Mw value. Furthermore, considering both the changes in molecular weight and anticoagulant activity, the action patterns of heparinase I and heparinase II were found not to follow the exolytic and processive depolymerizing mechanism from the reducing end of heparin.

Abstract
Changes of plant cell wall carbohydrate structures occurring during the process to make suitable compost for growth of Agaricus bisporus are unknown. In this paper, composition and carbohydrate structures in compost samples collected during composting and mycelium growth were analyzed. Furthermore, different extracts of compost samples were prepared with water, 1M and 4M alkali and analyzed. At the beginning of composting, 34% and after 16 days of mycelium growth 27% of dry matter was carbohydrates. Carbohydrate composition analysis showed that mainly cellulose and poorly substituted xylan chains with similar amounts and ratios of xylan building blocks were present in all phases studied. Nevertheless, xylan solubility increased 20% over the period of mycelium growth indicating partial degradation of xylan backbone. Apparently, degradation of carbohydrates occurred over the process studied by both bacteria and fungi, mainly having an effect on xylan-chain length and solubility.

Abstract
An non-GPI-anchored AGP cluster (Y2) was isolated from the seeds of Jatropha curcas L. (Euphorbiaceae) composed of 4.8% polypeptides (mainly Ala, Ser, Gly, Hyp, Glu) and a carbohydrate moiety composed of Gal, Ara, GlcA, Rha, Man and GlcN. Besides the typical structural features of arabinogalactan proteins, typical N-glycan linker of the complex type (GlcNAc4Man3Gal2Fuc1Xyl1) were identified. O-glycosylation occurred mainly via Hyp and to a lesser extent via Thr and Ser. N-glycans from the complex type, carrying at the innermost GlcNAc at position O-3 one α-Fuc-residue, were also present. MS analysis of the tryptic digest assigned peptides of three major protein groups: fasciclin-like arabinogalactan proteins, xylogen-like proteins and LysM domain-containing proteins. They could not be separated further and it is indicated that various homologous protein forms co-exist. Histological investigation of J. curcas seeds revealed the presence of AGPs in the vessels of cotyledons and in the procambium ring of the embryo.

Abstract
Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) is currently used as an anticoagulant agent and constitutes an alternative to unfractionated heparin, which is the cause of serious adverse drug reaction such as heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). Commercially available LMWH is produced by enzymatic depolymerization that is costly or by chemical methods that are generally carried out under conditions that could imply side reactions that reduce final product efficiency and yields. In this work, we present the use of a physicochemical method for the production of LMWH. This method consists in the use of hydrogen peroxide-catalyzed radical hydrolysis assisted by ultrasonic waves. LMWH that are produced using this physicochemical method have an average molecular weight and anticoagulant properties (Anti-Xa and Anti-IIa) that are comparable to some of commercial LMWH that are currently used. Ultrasonic-assisted radical depolymerization of heparin leads to products with a remarkably low polydispersity index. Moreover, in comparison to other LMWH such as those produced by enzymatic β-elimination, this physicochemical depolymerization of heparin induces fewer oligosaccharides with less than five monosaccharide units. This contributes to the better preservation of the ATIII pentasaccharide binding sequence, which results in a high Anti-Xa/Anti-IIa ratio (1.86). However, LMWH obtained using this physicochemical method have a lower degree of sulfation than other LMWH, which seems to be the cause of a lower Anti-Xa and Anti-IIa activity (143.62±5.42 and 77.07±4.4, respectively).

Abstract
Polysaccharides from Ganoderma spp. and their adulterants were firstly investigated and compared using saccharide mapping, enzymatic (endo-1,3-β-D-glucanase and pectinase) digestion followed by polysaccharide analysis using carbohydrate gel electrophoresis analysis. The results showed that both 1,3-β-D-glucosidic and 1,4-α-D-galactosiduronic linkages were existed in Lingzhi (Ganoderma lucidum and Ganoderma sinense), and the similarity of polysaccharides from G. lucidum and G. sinense was high, which may contribute to rational use of Lingzhi. Different species of Ganoderma and their adulterants can be differentiated based on the saccharide mapping, which is helpful to well understand the structural characters of polysaccharides from different species of Ganoderma and to improve the quality control of polysaccharides in Lingzhi.

Abstract
Aim: To measure the light transmission through different esthetic posts and to evaluate the degree of polymerization of dual cure resin cement cured through these posts. Materials and Methods: The posts were divided into two experimental groups i.e. Group A (D.T. Light post); Group B (D.T. White post) and control i.e. Group C (metal post), each group having 10 samples. Posts of each group were illuminated with curing light and photographs were taken keeping the parameters standardized to evaluate the intensity of light transmission at different levels. The degree of polymerization of dual cure resin cement was evaluated using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. The data obtained was subjected to statistical analysis. Results: D.T. Light post showed highest light transmission and degree of polymerization. The light intensity decreased from cervical to apical for both esthetic post but the decrease from middle to apical third was insignificant for D.T. White post group. No light transmission was detected in metal post but the degree of polymerization decreased significantly from cervical to middle third. Conclusion: Cementation of fibre post with superior light transmitting ability using dual cured resin cement resulted in increased degree of polymerization.

Abstract
The main water-soluble carbohydrates in temperate forage grasses are polymeric fructans. Fructans consist of fructose chains of various chain lengths attached to sucrose as a core molecule. In grasses, fructans are a complex mixture of a large number of isomeric oligomers with a degree of polymerisation ranging from 3 to >100. Accurate monitoring and unambiguous peak identification requires chromatographic separation coupled to mass spectrometry. The mass range of ion trap mass spectrometers is limited, and we show here how monitoring selected multiply charged ions can be used for the detection and quantification of individual isomers and oligomers of high mass, particularly those of high degree of polymerization (DP > 20) in complex plant extracts. Previously reported methods using linear ion traps with low mass resolution have been shown to be useful for the detection of fructans with a DP up to 49. Here, we report a method using high-resolution mass spectrometry (MS) using an Exactive Orbitrap MS which greatly improves the signal-to-noise ratio and allows the detection of fructans up to DP = 100. High-sugar (HS) Lolium perenne cultivars with high concentrations of these fructans have been shown to be of benefit to the pastoral agricultural industry because they improve rumen nitrogen use efficiency and reduce nitrous oxide emissions from pastures. We demonstrate with our method that these HS grasses not only contain increased amounts of fructans in leaf blades but also accumulate fructans with much higher DP compared to cultivars with normal sugar levels.

Abstract
A definition for dietary fiber was adopted in June 2009 by the Codex Alimentarius Commission based on the recommendation for endorsement of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) in November 2008. The definition listed three categories of carbohydrate polymers that are not hydrolyzed by the endogenous enzymes in the small intestine of humans. However, the definition left the inclusion of carbohydrates with degrees of polymerization (DP) in the range of 3 and 9 to the discretion of national authorities and left the ‘physiological effect(s) of benefit to health’ as undefined. The ILSI Europe and ILSI North America's committees on dietary carbohydrates organized a forum at the Ninth Vahouny Fiber Symposium in 2010 to discuss these implementation issues with the objective of building scientific consensus on how to resolve them. The results of this session are encouraging and indicated that the scientific community agrees on maintaining a worldwide consensus regarding the inclusion of non-digestible carbohydrates with ≥DP3 as dietary fiber and on a core, non-exhaustive list of beneficial physiological effects that dietary fibers have. These results are consistent with previous worldwide agreements.

Abstract
This study investigated the influence of the degree of polymerization (DP) of cellulose materials (microcrystalline cellulose [MCC]) on some powder properties and the compression behavior of these materials. The DP was determined by measurements of viscosity (H). The weight average of molecular weight and the weight average of the different DPs were investigated after MCC was modified to cellulose tricarbanilate by light scattering measurements. The DP showed a remarkable influence on the physicochemical properties of the cellulose materials and, consequently, on the behavior of these materials during compression. MCC types with a high DP value showed greater water absorption than the types with a low DP value. No relevant relationship between the crystallinity index and the DP could be observed. DP 190 showed lower compactibility and compressibility parameters than DP 244 and 299. No significant differences could be observed between DP 244 and 299 when the same particle size fraction was compressed. Furthermore, the compressibility was increased by increasing the DP.
