Abstract
Aim The research project focuses on the creation and assessment of an innovative computer vision system designed to identify dental irregularities in individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment. Materials and Methods To establish the computer vision system, a comprehensive dataset of dental images was collected, encompassing various orthodontic cases. The system's algorithm was trained to recognize patterns indicative of common dental anomalies, such as malocclusions, spacing issues, and misalignments. Rigorous testing and refinement of the algorithm were conducted to enhance its accuracy and reliability. Results The validation of the system was carried out using the dental records and images of the 40 patients. The computer vision system's performance was evaluated against assessments made by experienced orthodontists. The results demonstrated a commendable level of concurrence between the system's automated detections and the orthodontists' evaluations, suggesting its potential as a valuable diagnostic tool. Conclusion In conclusion, the development and validation of this novel computer vision system exhibit promising outcomes in its ability to automatically detect dental anomalies in orthodontic patients.

Abstract
Even though China Antarctic medical care has made huge progress, dental care has always been a neglected area. Dental health is well-known to be closely related with life quality and work efficiency. Hence, knowing the dental care situation there and providing ways to improve are urgently needed. We choose doctors who worked in China Antarctic station as a window to see the whole picture by sending questionnaire. The results showed dental visits ranked second high, the ratio of doctors who got pre-departure dental knowledge education and screen is low. What is worse, none of them got any after-departure dental check. Their dental knowledge is not as good as we expect, and they were troubled by dental problems in Antarctic. Interestingly, most dental problems were treated by non-dentist with no essential equipment, but 2/3 of them were satisfied with the outcome. As for the dental-related diet and behaviour, snacks eating and alcohol drinking are the strongest predictors of dental pain and gum problem. Those findings are crucial to Antarctic dental care and research.

Abstract
Aims and Objective The development of a nation depends on well-nourished individuals. A country's economic independence also depends on adequate food supply for all sections of its population and the proper selection of the right kinds of food, called nutritional literacy. This review will show the transition of dietary selection and practices across India over the last two decades and its impact on health. Materials and Methods We conducted a literature search to review the evidence of the last two decades. The literature search was done using the PubMed search engine and the MeSH words "Nutrition Literacy, Dietary Practices, Diet Transition, Nutrition transition, India and Food pattern." Evidence from the last two decades was collectively reviewed, and observations on the transition in nutrition literacy were summated. Results The literature search revealed 18 articles, out of which 13 articles were included in this review based on inclusion-exclusion criteria. Nine were review articles, and five were cross-sectional studies. The studies done over the last two decades on nutrition culture revealed that most of the studies related to transition have been done during the second decade of the twenty-first century. Most have found that the shift has been happening more among the urban poor and rural rich people. Indian diets have diversified and shifted away from cereals towards processed food. Conclusion It was found that there is a shift in feeding preferences in diet-deprived sections in India. The findings are similar in rural and urban areas where the poor fall prey to the food fads, make poor nutrition choices, and gradually develop chronic ailments. Such a transition over the years clearly shows that a malnourished child, having faulty feeding practices, becomes prey to the triple burden of hidden hunger, lack of nutrition, and repercussions of chronic non-communicable diseases, including dental ailments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between dental problems and sublingual/buccal buprenorphine is unclear. We conducted an analysis of dental adverse drug reactions reported with sublingual/buccal buprenorphine in VigiBase®, the pharmacovigilance database of the World Health Organization. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We performed disproportionality analyses to compare the reporting rates of dental problems with sublingual/buccal buprenorphine, compared to other buprenorphine formulations and methadone. Significant signals were considered if the lower boundary of the 95% confidence interval of the Reporting Odds Ratio (ROR) was > 1; cases were ≥ 3 and p-value <0.05. We conducted sensitivity analyses by calculating the ROR according to the reporter's qualification and the reporting continent (United States of America and Europe). RESULTS We included 30,769 reports with all buprenorphine forms. We found 20 cases of dental problems with sublingual/buccal buprenorphine. Sublingual/buccal buprenorphine was associated with an overreporting of dental problems compared to other buprenorphine formulations (ROR = 15.10; 95% CI [7.50-30.39]; p < 0.005) and compared to methadone (ROR = 6.02; 95% CI [3.21-11.30]; p < 0.005). Overreporting of dental problems was consistent in sensitivity analyses, except in Europe compared with other buprenorphine formulations and with methadone. CONCLUSIONS Sublingual/buccal buprenorphine might increase the risk of reporting dental problems. However, these results do not modify the benefits of sublingual/buccal buprenorphine in the treatment of opioid use disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preventing oral health problems can be crucial for maintaining physical independence in older adults. We aimed to examine the associations of a range of oral health problems with incidence of disability in older adults. METHODS We used prospective data from the British Regional Health Study (BRHS) (N = 2147, 71-92 years), and the Health, Aging and Body Composition (HABC) study (USA) (N = 3075, 71-80 years). Oral health measures included tooth loss, periodontal disease, self-rated oral health, and self-reported dry mouth. Participants were followed for onset of disability over a follow-up period of 3 years. Onset of disability was assessed through new cases of mobility limitations, activities of daily living (ADL), and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). Logistic regression was performed to calculate the odds of incident disability. RESULTS In the BRHS, tooth loss was associated with greater odds of mobility limitations and ADL difficulties. Periodontal disease was associated with greater incidence of mobility limitations. Self-report of ≥3 dry mouth symptoms was associated with increased odds of incident mobility limitations and ADL difficulties (OR = 2.08, 95% CI 1.27-3.42; OR = 1.73, 95% CI 1.03-2.90). Fair/poor self-rated oral health was associated with greater incidence of IADL difficulties. In the HABC study, complete tooth loss was associated with greater incidence of mobility limitations (OR = 1.86, 95% CI 1.13-3.06), and fair/poor self-rated oral health was associated with increased odds of incident ADL difficulties (OR = 1.42, 95% CI 1.04-1.94). CONCLUSIONS Oral health problems in older adults, particularly tooth loss, self-reported dry mouth and self-rated oral health were associated with greater incidence of disability. Poor oral health plays a potentially important role in the development of disability in older populations, which in turn is an essential part of quality of life and healthy aging.

Abstract
SUMMARY Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition of intermittent nocturnal upper airway obstruction. OSA increases sympathetic drive which may result in clinical and biochemical features suggestive of pheochromocytoma. We present the case of a 65-year-old male with a 2.9-cm left adrenal incidentaloma on CT, hypertension, symptoms of headache, anxiety and diaphoresis, and persistently elevated 24-h urine norepinephrine (initially 818 nmol/day (89-470)) and normetanephrine (initially 11.2 µmol/day (0.6-2.7)). He was started on prazosin and underwent left adrenalectomy. Pathology revealed an adrenal corticoadenoma with no evidence of pheochromocytoma. Over the next 2 years, urine norepinephrine and normetanephrine remained significantly elevated with no MIBG avid disease. Years later, he was diagnosed with severe OSA and treated with continuous positive airway pressure. Urine testing done once OSA was well controlled revealed complete normalization of urine norepinephrine and normetanephrine with substantial symptom improvement. It was concluded that the patient never had a pheochromocytoma but rather an adrenal adenoma with biochemistry and symptoms suggestive of pheochromocytoma due to untreated severe OSA. Pseudo-pheochromocytoma is a rare presentation of OSA and should be considered on the differential of elevated urine catecholamines and metanephrines in the right clinical setting. LEARNING POINTS Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common condition among adults. OSA may rarely present as pseudo-pheochromocytoma with symptoms of pallor, palpitations, perspiration, headache, or anxiety. OSA should be considered on the differential of elevated urine catecholamines and metanephrines, especially in patients with negative metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scan results.

Abstract
Purpose Diabetes is a big public health threat in Saudi Arabia. However, there is limited evidence about dental problems, oral hygiene practices, and dental visits among diabetic patients. The study aimed to evaluate self-perceived oral health status and patterns of dental attendance among diabetic patients in the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia. Methodology This cross-sectional study included 486 diabetic patients (mean age 50.14±13.59 years) registered with the Saudi Diabetes Society, Saudi Arabia (October–November 2020). The World Health Organization’s oral health questionnaire for adults was administered to collect information about oral health status, oral hygiene practices, and dental attendance, in addition to sociodemographic data. Descriptive and analytical statistics were performed. Results Most participants (66.3%) reported having dental pain or discomfort during the last year. Bad breath (60.50%), tooth cavities (55.10%), difficulty in biting hard food (55.10%), tooth sensitivity (53.30%), and bleeding gums (52.90%) were common oral problems among participants. More than half the sample (55.1%) reported visiting the dental office during the last year. However, pain or trouble with teeth, gums or mouth was the most common (40.5%) reason for the last dental visit. Only 7.8% of participants visited the dentist for a routine dental check-up. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that Saudi nationality (AOR 2.68, P 0.008), family history of diabetes (AOR 1.88, P 0.022), and having pain during the last year (AOR 4.01, P <0.001) were the significant factors associated with the last dental visit due to pain. Conclusion This sample of participants demonstrated a high prevalence of dental problems. Few participants performed routine dental visits and most visits were due to pain. Saudis and patients with family history of diabetes and dental pain were more likely to perform pain related dental visits. Multidisciplinary efforts are needed to develop and implement preventive educational and clinical care models for positive oral and general health outcomes.

Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the associations between self-reported ability to afford dental care and quality of life in adults aged 45 years and older. Method: We used publicly available cross-sectional data from the 2008 National Health Interview Survey and its oral health supplement for 11,760 adults aged 45+ years. The increased probabilities of reporting dental problems attributable to an inability to afford dental care were estimated from multivariate models and combined with respective dental problem disability weights from the Global Burden of Disease to measure loss in quality of life. Results: Prevalence of reported inability to afford dental care, severe tooth loss, severe periodontitis, and untreated caries were 11.9%, 8.5%, 14.3%, and 37.9%, respectively. Inability to afford dental care was associated with an increase of 0.017 disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per person per year under base case and 0.020 DALYs under generous assumptions. Conclusion: Making dental care affordable could improve adult's (age 45 and above) quality of life at a reasonable cost.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dental emergencies in isolated groups have always been difficult to treat. Especially in people or groups who cannot be evacuated and who need urgent dental assistance: long-term submarine missions, long-term spaceship trips, military or non-governmental organizations deployments in conflict areas, military maneuvers, etc. The dental and evacuation problems could put the success of the mission at risk, with relevant associated economic and strategic costs. Our study summarizes current evidence about dental problems in isolated personnel (submarines and Antarctic missions) compared to other non-isolation conditions (military deployment in conflict area, military maneuvers) with the objective to assess the need for specific dental equipment in special long-term isolation conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS We searched Medline, Cochrane Library, and Dentalgate between 1960 and 2017 for studies reporting dental disease in long-term isolation conditions (minimum 1 month) versus non-isolation conditions. We conducted the systematic review with all studies fitting the inclusion criteria. The comparison of the incidence rate was performed fitting a Poisson regression model to see the effect of the individual's condition on the incidence of dental event. RESULTS Thirty-eight studies were included in the systematic review. Antarctic missions showed a higher dental incidence rate compared to non-isolation conditions, but submarine missions showed the lowest dental incidence rate. In the sub-analysis of acute dental events, those with great impact on unit effectiveness, the incidence rates were higher. Caries and secondary decay events were the most prevalent dental problem in all conditions, followed by periodontal pathology and fractures of teeth or tooth problems not due to tooth decay in isolation conditions, and then by molar problems and endodontic problems in non-isolation conditions. The most common acute dental events were third molar problems and endodontic problems in all conditions. CONCLUSION This systematic review shows that the incidence of dental pathology in long-term isolation conditions may seem relatively infrequent but it exists and is relevant. Dental events are unpredictable, unrelated to trauma, and caused mainly by poor dental status. Preventive measures considerably reduce dental prevalence.

Abstract
Nowadays, the epidemic of obesity and metabolic syndrome can be observed not only among adults, but also amid the younger population, with more than 380 million children and adolescents worldwide being affected by these phenomena. Obesity is considered a systemic chronic metabolic disease resulting from the imbalance between energy intake and expenditure. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified obesity as the most serious chronic disease, which, if untreated, leads to dangerous health problems (hypertension, heart failure, as well as kidney, nervous system and eye diseases). Recent scientific findings indicate a close relationship between obesity/metabolic syndrome and changes in the oral environment in children and adolescents. Obesity significantly increases the incidence of dental hard tissue diseases, periodontal diseases and diseases of the stomatognathic system. It also affects the secretion activity of the salivary glands, which changes the quantitative and qualitative composition of unstimulated and stimulated saliva. It is believed that in the face of a growing epidemic of obesity in children and adolescents, dental practitioners should also participate in the systemic treatment and prevention in this group of patients.

Abstract
AIM To examine the evidence on the influence of oral health status on school performance and school attendance in children and adolescents. DESIGN A systematic review was performed in accordance with PRISMA included epidemiological studies that assessed concomitantly oral health measures, participants' school performance and/or school attendance. Electronic search was conducted on MEDLINE, SCOPUS, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and LILACS. Studies published up to May 2018 in any language were eligible. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Meta-analysis was used to obtain pooled estimates between oral health measures and school performance and school attendance. RESULTS Eighteen studies were included. Of them, fifteen studies were used for the meta-analyses. Most studies were assessed as moderate quality. Children with one or more decayed teeth had higher probability of poor school performance (OR = 1.44 95%CI: 1.24-1.64) and poor school attendance (OR = 1.57 95%CI: 1.08-2.05) than caries-free children. Poor parent's perception of child's oral health increased the odds of worse school performance (OR = 1.51 95%CI: 1.10-1.92) and poor school attendance (OR = 1.35 95%CI: 1.14-1.57). CONCLUSIONS Children and adolescents with dental caries and those reporting worse oral health experience poor school performance and poor school attendance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Dental trauma represents a significant cause for concern in emergency department (ED). The aim of this study was to report on the prevalence of ED visits for dental problems associated with trauma (DPAT) in Alberta, Canada. The specific objectives were to provide up-to-date information regarding ED utilization for dental trauma concerning the demographics of users and distribution of ED visits across the Province of Alberta, allowing for an assessment of possible trends over the period of time observed. METHODS Data for ED visits in Alberta between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2017, were extracted from the National Ambulatory Care Reporting System (NACRS). Data elements pertinent to this analysis include patient demographics, administrative information, and diagnosis. Only the main or primary diagnosis of each ED visit was included in this analysis using the International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-CA). RESULTS There were 71 118 total ED visits for DPAT in this time period, with an average of 10 159 visits per year across Alberta. Children aged 1-4 years old represented the age-group in both genders with the largest number of ED visits, 22.1% of the total number of visits. The number of ED visits for DPAT by males 21 years or younger (22 384) was higher than the total number of ED visits among females in all age-groups (21 099). The ICD-10-CA code S01.5 referring to open wound of lip and oral cavity was by far the most prevalent diagnosis, representing 57.6% of the total visits during the period investigated. CONCLUSIONS This population-based report quantifies the rates and frequency of ED utilization for DPAT in the province of Alberta, Canada. The information gathered is important to support injury prevention initiatives using a population-based approach targeting the high-risk groups of the population identified by this study.

Abstract
Self-medication is a widespread behavior worldwide. It is defined as the practice of self-diagnosis and drug prescription without proper professional consultation. Aim: To determine the prevalence and predictors of self-medication for oral health problems among adults living in Riyadh city. Methods: A cross-sectional study based on a structured close-ended questionnaire was distributed among adults visiting shopping malls in all different five regions of Riyadh. A two-stage sampling technique was used: cluster and simple random sampling. The questionnaire was composed of two main sections: demographic characteristics and questions assessing the behavior of self-medication. Results: The prevalence of self-medication was found to be 63.25%, with a higher prevalence among females than males. Gender and nationality were significantly associated with self-medication. Salt in hot water locally (52.57%) and acetaminophen (47.43%), a type of an analgesic, were, systemically, the most frequently used. Pharmacy shops were the main source of these medicaments (66.01%). Similarly, the advice for using them was mainly given by pharmacists (53.36%). Lack of time was claimed to be the main reason for practicing self-medication (54.55%) with abscess, toothache, and gingival bleeding being the main predictors. Conclusions: Self-medication was found to be a common practice among the population of Riyadh city.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this report was to describe the frequency of emergency department (ED) visits for dental problems not associated with trauma (DPNAT) in Alberta, Canada, over a 5-year period. METHODS In Alberta, ED visits for DPNAT between 1 January 2011 and 30 April 2016 were identified using the codes from the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision, Canada (ICD-10-CA). The codes for DPNAT range from K00 to K14, described as diseases of the oral cavity, salivary glands and jaws. The data were gathered from the National Ambulatory Care Reporting System (NACRS) database and from the Alberta Real Time Syndromic Surveillance Net (ARTSSN). The information gathered on ED visits for DPNAT was related to the primary diagnosis of the discharge disposition of the visits. RESULTS During the study period, there were a total of 147,357 ED visits for DPNAT in Alberta. The visits were made by 111,362 individuals, representing 1.3 visits per person. Among all ED visits, a prevalence of 1.2% of ED visits for DPNAT was observed. The most prevalent primary diagnosis of ED visits for DPNAT was for diseases of pulp and periapical tissues (K04), such as periapical abscess, representing 45.0% of all visits, followed by disorders of teeth and supporting structures (K08), such as toothache, representing 18.8% of all visits. The majority of the visits were made by patients from 20 to 44 years of age (52.2%). North and Calgary Alberta Health Service (AHS) Zones were those with the highest occurrence of ED visits (31.9% and 24.5%, respectively). ED visits for dental problems were more common than visits for other general health conditions, such as diabetes and asthma. CONCLUSION The frequency of ED visits for DPNAT suggests barriers faced by the population in accessing dental care resources, especially for urgent dental needs. Policy efforts and political will are needed to provide alternative options for seeking emergency dental care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate emergency department (ED) visits for dental problems among Toronto's homeless population (Ontario, Canada). METHODS A random sample of 1,189 homeless was recruited from shelters and meal programs. Emergency department visits for non-traumatic dental problems (ICD-10-CA codes K00-K14) were identified using participants' health insurance number, during 2005-2009. Age- and sex-matched controls were selected from low-income neighborhoods. RESULTS Homeless and matched controls had 182 and 10 ED visits for dental problems, respectively. Homeless people were more significantly more likely (OR=2.27, p=.007) to make ED visit for dental problems compared with controls. Over 80% of the ED visits by homeless people were for odontogenic infections, and 46% of homeless people had more than one such visit. CONCLUSION The high rate of ED visits for dental problems by people who are homeless suggests that access to dental care is inadequate. The large number of repeat visits indicates that ED settings are ineffective for treatment of dental problems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Emergency department (ED) visits for nontraumatic dental conditions (NTDCs) may be a sign of unmet need for dental care. The objective of this study was to determine the accuracy of the International Classification of Diseases codes (ICD-10-CA) for ED visits for NTDC. METHODS ED visits in 2008-2099 at one hospital in Toronto were identified if the discharge diagnosis in the administrative database system was an ICD-10-CA code for a NTDC (K00-K14). A random sample of 100 visits was selected, and the medical records for these visits were reviewed by a dentist. The description of the clinical signs and symptoms were evaluated, and a diagnosis was assigned. This diagnosis was compared with the diagnosis assigned by the physician and the code assigned to the visit. RESULTS The 100 ED visits reviewed were associated with 16 different ICD-10-CA codes for NTDC. Only 2 percent of these visits were clearly caused by trauma. The code K0887 (toothache) was the most frequent diagnostic code (31 percent). We found 43.3 percent disagreement on the discharge diagnosis reported by the physician, and 58.0 percent disagreement on the code in the administrative database assigned by the abstractor, compared with what it was suggested by the dentist reviewing the chart. CONCLUSION There are substantial discrepancies between the ICD-10-CA diagnosis assigned in administrative databases and the diagnosis assigned by a dentist reviewing the chart retrospectively. However, ICD-10-CA codes can be used to accurately identify ED visits for NTDC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the oral health of psychiatric patients on psychotropic medication, and compare this to Queensland and national data. METHODS We interviewed and examined 50 patients on medication at two outpatient clinics in South-east Queensland, in 2010. These areas had unfluoridated water till 2009. RESULTS One-third of the sample had not visited a dentist in the previous 2 years. One-half reported brushing their teeth once a day; 11% stated they never brushed. The mean of decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) was 17.7 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 16.9 - 18.5), significantly higher than the state (13.1) and national (12.8) averages. Almost one-half of dental decay was untreated, compared to the state and national average of one-quarter. CONCLUSIONS The oral health of this subgroup within the community is substantially worse than the general population and there are substantially greater treatment needs. Achieving equity in oral health care for these individuals has substantial resource and management implications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Individuals lacking access to dentists may use hospital emergency departments (EDs) or physicians (MDs) for the management of their dental problems. This study examined visits by minority and low-income individuals to physicians and hospital emergency departments for the treatment of dental problems with the goal of exploring the nature of treatment provided and patient satisfaction with the care received. METHODS Eight focus group sessions were conducted with 53 participants drawn from low-income White, Black, and Hispanic adults who had experienced a dental problem and who had sought MD/ED care at least once during the previous 12 months. RESULTS Toothache pain or more generalized jaw/face pain was the most frequent oral problem resulting in MD/ED visits. Pain severity was the principle reason for seeking care from MDs/EDs, with financial barriers most often mentioned as the reason for not seeking care from dentists. Expectations of MD/ED visits were generally consistent with care received; most participants limited their expectations to the provision of antibiotics or pain medication. Nearly all of the participants thought they would eventually need to see a dentist for resolution of their dental problem. CONCLUSIONS Poor/minority individuals seek relief from oral pain through MDs/ EDs while recognizing that such care is not definitive.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The detection of dental pain in persons suffering from dementia has not yet been investigated. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Twenty-one nursing home residents with a mean age of 88 participated in this study. Nine rotating volunteer dentists came to the nursing home to conduct dental evaluations. Two outside geriatricians performed a second assessment, and additional information concerning dental status was obtained from the minimum data set (MDS). RESULTS Over 60 percent of assessed participants were considered to have a pain-causing condition. Less than half of these were rated by the geriatricians as having dental related pain. Only one participant was rated to have dental or mouth pain on the MDS. Only one of the 18 persons with either a full or partial evaluation had no dental problems. CONCLUSIONS Dental problems are underdetected and undertreated in the nursing home. Better training for non-dentists in detection of such problems and better reimbursement for dental care are needed to improve care of residents.
