Abstract
BACKGROUND Three Komondor dogs in a small family and 3 sporadic cases exhibited a constellation of signs that included juvenile-onset of failure-to-thrive, inappetence, vomiting and/or diarrhea, and weakness. In each we documented dyshematopoiesis, increased anion gap, methylmalonic acidemia/-uria, and serum cobalamin deficiency. Urine protein electrophoresis demonstrated excretion of cubam ligands. All clinical signs and metabolic abnormalities, except proteinuria, were reversed by regular parenteral cobalamin administration. The pattern of occurrence and findings in the disorder suggested an autosomal recessive inheritance of cobalamin malabsorption with proteinuria, a condition in humans called Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome. The purpose of this study was to determine the molecular cause of this disorder in Komondors. RESULTS Whole genome sequencing of two affected Komondor dogs of unknown relatedness and one parent and a clinically-normal littermate of an affected dog revealed a pathogenic single-base change in the CUBN intron 55 splice donor consensus sequence (NM_001003148.1: c.8746 + 1G > A) that was homozygous in affected dogs and heterozygous in the unaffected parents. Alleles of the variant co-segregated with alleles of the disease locus in the entire family and all more distantly-related sporadic cases. A population study using a simple allele-specific DNA test indicated mutant allele frequencies of 8.3 and 4.5% among North American and Hungarian Komondors, respectively. CONCLUSIONS DNA testing can be used diagnostically in Komondors when clinical signs are suggestive of cobalamin deficiency or to inform Komondor breeders prospectively and prevent occurrence of future affected dogs. This represents the third cubilin variant causing inherited selective cobalamin malabsorption in a large animal ortholog of human Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome.

Abstract
Prostasin (CAP1/PRSS8) is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored serine protease that is essential for epithelial development and overall survival in mice. Prostasin is regulated primarily by the transmembrane serine protease inhibitor, hepatocyte growth factor activator inhibitor (HAI)-2, and loss of HAI-2 function leads to early embryonic lethality in mice due to an unregulated prostasin activity. We have recently reported that critical in vivo functions of prostasin can be performed by proteolytically-inactive or zymogen-locked variants of the protease. Here we show that the zymogen form of prostasin does not bind to HAI-2 and, as a result, loss of HAI-2 does not affect prenatal development and survival of mice expressing only zymogen-locked variant of prostasin (Prss8 R44Q). Indeed, HAI-2-deficient mice homozygous for R44Q mutation (Spint2-/-;Prss8R44Q/R44Q) are born in the expected numbers and do not exhibit any obvious developmental abnormality at birth. However, postnatal growth in these mice is severely impaired and they all die within 4 to 7 days after birth due to a critical failure in the development of small and large intestines, characterized by a widespread villous atrophy, tufted villi, near-complete loss of mucin-producing goblet cells, loss of colonic crypt structure, and bleeding into the intestinal lumen. Intestines of Spint2-/-;Prss8R44Q/R44Q mice showed altered expression of epithelial junctional proteins, including reduced levels of EpCAM, E-cadherin, occludin, claudin-1 and -7, as well as an increased level of claudin-4, indicating that the loss of HAI-2 compromises intestinal epithelial barrier function. Our data indicate that the loss of HAI-2 in Prss8R44Q/R44Q mice leads to development of progressive intestinal failure that at both histological and molecular level bears a striking resemblance to human congenital tufting enteropathy, and may provide important clues for understanding and treating this debilitating human disease.

Abstract
A juvenile Australian shepherd dog exhibited failure to grow, inappetence, weakness, nonregenerative anemia, neutropenia, and cobalamin deficiency. DNA testing confirmed homozygosity of an amnionless mutation (AMN c.3G > A). Clinical signs resolved with supportive care and parenteral cobalamin supplementation. Inherited selective intestinal cobalamin malabsorption requiring lifelong parenteral supplementation should be considered in Australian shepherds, giant schnauzers, border collies, and beagles that fail to thrive.

Abstract
Vomiting is a common presenting complaint in feline practice. This article differs from previous reviews in that it is an evidence-based review of the mechanisms, causes, investigation and management of vomiting in the domestic cat. Published evidence was reviewed, and then used to make recommendations for clinical assessment, diagnosis, antiemetic drug treatment, dietary management and monitoring of cats presenting with vomiting. The strength of the evidence on which recommendations are made (and areas where evidence is lacking for cats) has been highlighted throughout.

Abstract
1. Based on earlier studies it was hypothesised that there is an immunological basis for the differences in susceptibility to malabsorption syndrome (MAS). A study was conducted to investigate base-line and MAS-induced cytokine levels in the intestine of broilers that differ in MAS susceptibility. 2. The transcription of cytokine mRNA in the intestine was quantified using a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. At different time points after disease induction the intestines of broilers were investigated for expression of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-6, IL-8, IL-18 and interferon (IFN)-gamma. Age-matched non-MAS-induced chickens served as controls. 3. Control chickens from a MAS-resistant line had higher concentrations of mRNA for IL-2, IL-6, IL-18 and IFN-gamma in the small intestine while no difference between the lines was found for IL-8. After induction of MAS the relative amounts of IL-2, IL-6, IL-8 and IFN-gamma mRNA increased more in the intestines of the susceptible line than in the gut of the resistant line. 4. We suggest that differences in cytokine mRNA in the base-line situation and in MAS-induced conditions indicate a difference in immune response regulation in the two broiler lines. This difference in response could lead to the difference in susceptibility to MAS.

Abstract
Malabsorption syndrome (MAS) in broilers is characterized by enteritis and reduced body weight gain. The pathogenesis of the intestinal lesions and the reasons for susceptibility differences between broiler lines are not clear. We studied the development of enteric lesions, epithelial apoptosis, and cell proliferation in relation to susceptibility. One-day-old chickens from two broiler lines were orally inoculated with intestinal homogenate derived from MAS-affected chickens. Vacuolar degeneration and apoptosis of the villous epithelium and infiltration of heterophils into the lamina propria occurred from day 1 post-inoculation. Following heterophil accumulation, at day 4 to 6 post-inoculation, there was severe apoptosis of the crypt epithelium and villous atrophy. The susceptible broilers had a significantly greater influx of heterophils and, subsequently, severe epithelial apoptosis and cystic damage to the crypts. There appeared to be a causal relationship between heterophil influx and the onset of apoptosis. Coincident with the epithelial apoptosis, MAS-affected chickens had crypt hyperproliferation and faster epithelial turnover. Heterophil infiltration and epithelial apoptosis appear to be critical in the pathogenesis of MAS. Heterophil recruitment may be a major factor in differences in susceptibility to MAS.

Abstract
Pathological conditions, which are the reason of indigestive and resorption in small intestine are linked with nutrition and are so-called malabsorptions. The reason of these conditions is on one hand decreasing of production abilities and on the other hand bad prosperity of farm husbandry eventually domestic animals. Malabsorptions are classified from pathological point of view to secondary and primary. To the first category belong the postsurgical state of digestive organs, malfunction of digestive organs from the various reasons such as decreasing of bile activity, decreasing of pancreas activity or for the reason of the malignant changes in the digestive organs or as the consequence of antibiotic treatment or cytostatics. The second category represents endogenous malfunction of intestine enzymes, which are linking with hypersensitivity to some kinds of feed. However the secondary malabsorptions are epiphenomenon several diseases, are in text also cure method mentioned, respectively mark of cure in some stadium diagnosed malabsorption. This present study is particulary oriented to pathogenesis and characterisation of the primary and secondary malabsorptions in the veterinary theory and praxis.

Abstract
An eight-month-old Border collie was presented with anorexia, cachexia, failure to thrive and stupor. Laboratory tests demonstrated a mild anaemia, neutropenia, proteinuria and hyperammonaemia. Serum bile acid concentrations were normal, but an ammonia tolerance test (ATT) was abnormal. The dog responded to symptomatic therapy for hepatoencephalopathy. When a low serum cobalamin (vitamin B12) concentration and methylmalonic aciduria were noted, the dog was given a supplement of parenteral cobalamin. Two weeks later, a repeat ATT was normal. Cobalamin supplementation was continued every two weeks, and all clinical signs, except for proteinuria, resolved despite withdrawing all therapy for hepatoencephalopathy. A presumptive diagnosis of hereditary selective cobalamin malabsorption was made, based on the young age, Border collie breed, low serum cobalamin concentration and methylmalonic aciduria. Although hereditary selective cobalamin malabsorption in Border collies, giant schnauzers, Australian shepherd dogs and beagles has previously been reported in North America, to the authors' knowledge this is the first report of the condition in the UK and the first to document an abnormal ATT in a cobalamin-deficient dog.

Abstract
Two cases of zinc deficiency in dairy goats from different flocks and not associated with a zinc-deficient diet are described. Hard, dry, hyperkeratotic skin, hair loss and pruritus especially prominent on the back, legs, udder, face and ears were the most common clinical signs. Skin biopsy findings revealed a mixture of orthokeratotic and parakeratotic hyperkeratosis. On initial examination, serum zinc concentrations were low in both goats (461 microg L(-1) and 521 microg L(-1), respectively). Although mild skin lesions persisted during the early stages of zinc supplementation, skin lesions completely resolved after prolonged oral zinc supplementation. Withdrawal of zinc supplementation resulted in re-appearance of lesions in both animals. Case 2 gave birth to two kids, one of which showed mild skin lesions at 8 months of age together with a low serum zinc concentration (434 microg L(-1)), suggestive of hereditary zinc malabsorption. The other kid remained free of skin lesions and had a serum zinc concentration (530 microg L(-1)) within the normal range. On the basis of historical and clinical findings, the cases presented here more closely resemble Syndrome 1 hereditary zinc deficiency as seen in Nordic dog breeds rather than other zinc deficiency conditions seen in other species. It is suggested that zinc deficiency in these goats was due to hereditary malabsorption of dietary zinc. This is the first descriptive study of this condition in goats. Life-long zinc supplementation may be necessary in such patients.

Abstract
Examination of the host gene expression response upon encounters with pathogens may provide insights into the cellular events following an infection. In addition, it may shed light on the basic mechanisms underlying differences in the susceptibility of the host. In this study gene expression in the chicken jejunum was investigated in 2 different broiler lines under control and malabsorption syndrome (MAS) affected conditions. The 2 broiler lines differ in their susceptibility for MAS. The gene expression was investigated at 6 different times postinoculation using a custom-made intestine specific cDNA microarray. More than 70 up- or downregulated genes were identified after a MAS inoculation in both broiler lines. However, the number of the up- and downregulated genes varied between the 2 lines, with more differences in expression in the most susceptible line. Marked differences were observed in expression profiles between the 2 broiler lines, in control as well as in the MAS affected birds. The microarray data were validated and confirmed by quantitative real time PCR. The differentially expressed genes included immune related genes, genes associated with food absorption, and genes that need to be characterized further before their role in MAS and MAS susceptibility can be understood.

Abstract
1. A study was conducted to investigate the effects of several vitamins and trace elements chickens and in chickens experimentally infected with malabsorption syndrome (MAS). 2. Vitamins and trace minerals in feed were varied. Breeders received either a basal amount of vitamins and trace minerals (low mix) or an increased amount (high mix). Their progeny also received either a low mix or a high mix. Effects of different breeder and broiler mix combinations on broiler performance, heamatology, spleen weight and humoral response were examined in control chickens. The effects of the different feeds and breeder, broiler combinations at the severity and recovery of MAS infection were also studied. 3. In general, the immune system can be stimulated by addition of vitamins and trace minerals, without affecting the growth potential of the controls. The number of leukocytes increased on d 1 in the broilers descended from breeders receiving high mix. The response to Newcastle disease virus boost was affected by the different amount of vitamins. 4. When breeders received a high mix the number of infiltrating polymorphonuclear leukocytes in the intestine was higher compared with breeders receiving basal amounts of minerals and vitamins. Also the recovery rate of intestinal lesions, cystic crypts of Lieberkühn and villus atrophy, as observed by histopathology, was faster in the groups where the breeders received high mix.

Abstract
Expressed sequenced tags (ESTs) and microarray resources have a great impact on the ability to study host response in mice and humans. Unfortunately, these resources are not yet available for domestic farm animals. The aim of this study was to provide genomic resources to study chicken intestinal health, in particular malabsorption syndrome (MAS), which affects mainly the intestine. Therefore a normalized and subtracted cDNA library containing more than 7000 clones was prepared. Randomly chosen clones were sequenced for control purposes. New ESTs were found and multiple ESTs not identified in the chicken intestine before were observed. The number of non-specific ESTs in this cDNA library was low. Based on this normalized and subtracted library a cDNA microarray was made. In a preliminary hybridization experiment with the microarray, genes were identified to be up- or downregulated in MAS infected chickens. This indicates that the generated resources are valuable tools to investigate chicken intestinal health by whole genome expression analysis approaches.

Abstract
The diagnostic and prognostic value of nuclear scintigraphy with technetium-99m-labelled hexamethyl-propyleneamine oxime-labelled leucocytes was assessed in 17 horses with weight loss due to gastrointestinal malabsorption by comparing the results with the results obtained from 13 normal control horses. Intestinal uptake of activity was detected in 12 of the 17 cases but none of the control horses. The technique was therefore specific for intestinal pathology, but failed to detect some horses that might have had intestinal pathology. No indications of the horses' specific pathology were obtained, and their prognosis or response to treatment could not be predicted.

Abstract
Proliferative enteropathy is an important enteric disease caused by Lawsonia intracellularis. A wide range of host species can be infected by the same bacterium, yet the clinico-pathologic features among these hosts remains almost identical. The disease has been recognized regularly among ratites, but not in other avian families, such as galliforms, even though these suffer uncharacterized enteric conditions. Fresh ileum-colon contents were obtained from 228, 3- to 8-week-old chickens with enteric disease, kept at 14 large commercial farms in the southern USA. DNA was extracted from each sample and subjected to polymerase chain reactions (PCR) with primers specific to eubacterial DNA, L. intracellularis, and Bilophila wadsworthia. All chicken samples were positive for eubacterial DNA, 29 chickens (13%) were positive for B. wadsworthia DNA, and none were positive for L. intracellularis DNA. Given the ubiquitous nature of L. intracellularis, we consider it likely that some avian families do not carry the necessary mechanism for L. intracellularis viability. Bilophila wadsworthia appears to be a consistent member of the colonic flora of some host animals. Neither bacterium appears to be associated with malabsorption syndromes in chickens.

Abstract
The enteropathogenicity of avian reoviruses (ARVs), isolated from chickens affected with malabsorption syndrome (MAS) from The Netherlands and Germany was studied. In the first trial seven different ARVs isolated from MAS cases were inoculated in 1-day-old specific pathogenic free (SPF) white leghorns. The pathogenicity was compared with 2 ARVs isolated from cases of tenosynovitis, namely reference strain S1133 and a Dutch strain. Although a difference in the severity of the clinical disease was observed, all reoviruses could induce vacuolar degeneration and sloughing of the epithelium of the small intestine at day 2 post inoculation (PI) till day 7 PI. Two Dutch and one German ARV derived from MAS causing the most severe intestinal lesions at day 2 PI, were further studied in the second trial using SPF broilers. These reoviruses did not cause weight gain depression in the broilers although lesions in the small intestine were present from day 1 up to day 4 PI and were more severe than in the white leghorn chickens. In one of the inoculated groups apical denuded villi were already present at day 1 PI. At day 7 PI the small intestine of the infected broilers appeared to be normal. Reovirus antigen was detected in the cytoplasm of the enterocytes at the tip and middle section of the affected villi both in layers and in broilers. To study the role of intestinal CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells and macrophages/monocytes in the pathogenesis of ARV, the numbers of these cells of the jejunal villi of one infected and the control broiler groups were compared. CD4+ T-cells were detected in low numbers and only in the infected broiler group at day 14 PI. The numbers of CD8+ T-cells and macrophages/monocytes were significantly higher in the infected broiler group than in the control broiler group at day 7 and 14 PI and at day 7 PI respectively. Our study indicates that the reovirus alone cannot induce intestinal lesions as found in MAS chickens. Moreover, CD8+ T-cells may play a major role in the pathogenesis and or reovirus clearance in the small intestine.

Abstract
Growth retardation in young broiler chicks due to poor nutrient metabolism, commonly known as malabsorption syndrome (MAS), is a widespread problem caused by enteric infections with a combination of pathogens mainly viruses. Genetic lines of broiler chickens differ in susceptibility to the syndrome. A difference in growth retardation was observed among four broiler lines (BL) after oral inoculation at 1 d of age with intestinal homogenates obtained from MAS-affected birds. Two of the lines that are more susceptible to MAS had severe weight gain depression. To uncover the factors that play a role in the susceptibility to MAS, we analyzed the growth rate of the body and vital organs and the quantity of leukocytes in the peripheral blood and intestinal mucosa. The development of the intestine, liver, bursa of Fabricius, and spleen was similar among the BL. The resistant BL had higher numbers of peripheral blood leukocytes, especially lymphocytes, at 1 d of age. A significant difference was noted in the numbers of CD4+ T cells and CD8+ T cells in the intestinal villi. At the ages of 3 and 8 d, the susceptible BL had more CD8+ T cells in the villi, whereas the ratios of CD4+:CD8+ T cells were higher in the resistant BL. This difference in the number of T-cell subpopulations in the intestinal mucosa might be an important factor in the difference in susceptibility to the enteric infections associated with MAS.

Abstract
We studied the cellular immune response against malabsorption syndrome (MAS) in two broiler chicken lines, A and B. We determined the number of pan T-lymphocytes (CD3), helper T-lymphocytes (CD4), cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CD8) and macrophages/monocytes in the small intestine in the first 2 weeks after oral inoculation of two MAS homogenates, MAS80 and MAS97-1. The immune cells were detected on cryostat tissue by immunohistochemistry and counted by villus area. In trial 1, we compared the two broiler lines for weight gain depression, intestinal lesion and number of CD3, CD4, CD8 cells and macrophages/monocytes after MAS80 inoculation. Although there was no significant difference in weight gain depression between the two broiler lines, line B had significantly higher numbers of CD8+ T-cells per villus area than had line A. To confirm part of the results of trial 1, trial 2 was done in which we compared different homogenates in broiler line B. Broiler line B was orally inoculated with either MAS97-1, intestinal homogenate obtained from healthy chickens (healthy homogenate), or phosphate buffered saline (PBS). In this trial, the MAS97-1 homogenate also induced weight gain depression and intestinal lesions, whereas the "healthy homogenate" and PBS did not induce weight gain depression or intestinal lesions. The broilers inoculated with MAS97-1 homogenate had significantly more CD8+ T-cells per villus area than had broilers inoculated with "healthy homogenate" or PBS. Increased CD8+ T-cells per villus area in the affected small intestines of broilers suggests an increase of cytotoxic T-cell activity.

Abstract
Attempts to reproduce malabsorption syndrome (MAS) by oral inoculation with several different combinations including intestinal homogenate, reovirus, and hemolytic Escherichia coli obtained from MAS-affected chickens and intestinal homogenate from healthy chickens (healthy homogenate) were performed in 1-day-old specific-pathogen-free (SPF) broilers. The MAS homogenate, serving as a positive control, induced weight gain depression and intestinal lesions such as cystic crypts of Lieberkuhn, villus atrophy, and lymphoid and/or granulocytic infiltration. The healthy homogenate, the formalin-treated MAS homogenate, the formalin-treated healthy homogenate, and phosphate-buffered saline caused neither weight gain depression nor intestinal lesions. We were able to reproduce both weight gain depression and intestinal lesions by inoculation of reovirus either combined with the formalin-treated MAS homogenate or combined with healthy homogenate. Surprisingly, when hemolytic E. coli was added to the combination of reovirus with formalin-treated MAS homogenate, this did not cause weight gain depression although this combination caused the described intestinal lesions. Identical results were obtained with the combination of formalin-treated MAS homogenate with hemolytic E coli or the combination of reovirus with hemolytic E. coli. The intestinal lesions were more severe and developed faster by combinations including reovirus and formalin-treated MAS homogenate. This study indicates that a combination of enteropathogenic reovirus with other agents or substances that are present in an intestinal homogenate from MAS-affected and healthy chickens can induce MAS in SPF broilers. Escherichia coli is not essential for induction of weight gain depression but can play a role in development of intestinal lesions. Furthermore, intestinal lesions alone will not always result in weight gain depression.

Abstract
Stunted growth of poults afflicted by enteritis mortality syndrome (PEMS) may be associated with depressed digestive capabilities. We conducted two experiments to test this hypothesis. Survivors of PEMS were obtained from a research flock that had been purposefully infected at 5 d of age with PEMS inoculum that included turkey corona virus. The PEMS survivors were assigned to Experiments 1 and 2, beginning at 40 and 35 d of age, respectively. Three groups (large, L; medium, M; and small, S) and two groups (L and S) of 20 poults each were selected to represent different degrees of stunting in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. When the body weights of each group in both experiments were plotted using initial body weight as the starting point, all of the weights fell on the normal growth curve except Group S in Experiment 1. Therefore, there was no evidence of compensatory growth over the period studied. In Experiment 1, apparent fat absorption (AFA) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) for control (85.9%) than for M (78.5%) and S (78.3%) groups, and AME, for the control group was significantly higher than all the PEMS-survivor groups. In Experiment 2, Group L had a higher AFA and AMEn than Group S. AFA and AMEn improved in both groups over time. The digestive capabilities of PEMS survivors were depressed proportionally to the degree of stunting. Impaired fat digestibility and dietary energy utilization in PEMS-afflicted birds are likely contributors to stunted growth and reduced recovery rates.

Abstract
This paper describes the isolation and identification of a novel class of reoviruses, the so-called enteric reovirus strains (ERS). The pathogenicity, dissemination, induction of malabsorption syndrome (MAS), reaction pattern with different monoclonal antibodies, and serotype properties are reported. Upon screening of reoviruses in the field, it was observed that these reovirus strains were also present in other countries and were usually isolated from birds with MAS. Based on the data presented here, it is proposed that the so-called ERS are associated with MAS.

Abstract
Five malabsorption syndrome (MAS) homogenates from The Netherlands and Germany were used to reproduce MAS in broilers. We studied the histopathology after inoculation of 1-day-old broiler chicks and the agents that might be involved. Generally, the MAS homogenates induced signs that differed in severity and pathobiology. We could distinguish and classify the inoculated groups best by histopathology: proventriculitis, lesions in the small intestines in combination with proventriculitis, or lesions of the small intestines only. Lesions in the small intestine had more impact on weight gain depression than lesions in the proventriculus. In three out of five inoculated groups, microscopic lesions of the pancreas were found. Reovirus was detected in the inoculated groups by virus isolation and seroconversion, and reoviral antigen was detected by immunohistochemistry of the small intestine. Also, enteroviruslike particles were detected in three of the five inoculated groups, although not in the most affected group. Additionally, bacteriophages and bacteria (hemolytic Escherichia coli, Pasteurella hemolytica, and Enterococcus durans) were isolated from inoculated chicks. The role these agents play in pathogenesis of MAS is still unsolved.

Abstract
Severe wasting of body tissues, diarrhea, high morbidity and mortality, and stunting are all characteristics of poult enteritis and mortality syndrome (PEMS). The wasting of musculature and loss of nearly all adipose tissue suggested that even though the PEMS-infected poults were eating some feed, nutrient intake was not sufficient to meet body requirements for maintenance and growth. Because epithelial cells in the gastrointestinal tract appeared to be a target of the undefined etiological agent (or agents) that causes PEMS, a study was conducted in which PEMS-infected poults were evaluated for malabsorption through 3 wk of age. D-Xylose, a poorly metabolized pentose, was given per os as a bolus, and blood samples were obtained from the ulnar vein in the wing of control and PEMS-infected poults over a 3-h period to estimate intestinal absorption. D-Xylose absorption in control poults peaked 30 to 60 min after the oral treatment, similar to results reported earlier. The PEMS-infected poults did not show a peak in absorption. The PEMS-infected poults showed significant delays in D-xylose absorption at 4, 7, and 11 d after PEMS challenge. The severe malabsorption and metabolic deficiency problem associated with PEMS was postulated to be a direct effect of the undefined infectious agent or agents that cause the disease.

Abstract
The present study deals with the symptomatology, diagnosis (by means of gastroduodenoscopy and biopsy) and response to a combined dietary/immunosuppressive pharmacological treatment of 17 dogs with malabsorption syndrome. Clinical signs, body weight and serum protein levels evolved favourably in all individuals included in this study during the 150 days following initiation of treatment.

Abstract
The paper presents two cases of malabsorption syndrome in broiler chickens. The results indicate that the etiological factor appears to be the virus agent which causes necrosis in extra-excretional parts of the pancreas. During the course of the disease disorders in the enzymatic activity of gammaglutamyltransferase, leucylaminopeptidase and alanylaminopeptidase were observed. It consequently leads to the deterioration of intestines digestion and resorption of feed components. Application of Selcewet-Polfa to the diseased birds improved the health of the birds, morphological picture of peripheral blood and mineralisation of thigh bones. No radical improvement in the compensation of the final body weight was recorded.

Abstract
From 1992 to mid-1996, a national survey of poultry diseases in Lebanon was conducted. This surveillance included meat breeder, layer breeder, commercial layer and chicken broiler flocks. The history, signs, lesions and laboratory tests of poultry were used in the diagnosis of prevalent poultry diseases. Culture techniques were used to screen for bacterial diseases; serological techniques and, to a lesser extent, culture techniques were used to diagnose viral diseases; and both serological and culture techniques were used to diagnose Mycoplasma infections. The outbreaks of diseases detected in broiler breeder flocks and the number of such flocks experiencing these diseases were as follows: femoral head necrosis (6), egg-drop syndrome (3), reovirus-associated malabsorption syndrome (3), synovitis (Mycoplasma synoviae infection) (7), swollen head syndrome (SHS) (3), tenosynovitis (viral arthritis) (1), lymphoid leukosis (3), avian encephalomyelitis (1), fowl pox (1) and aortic rupture (1). The disease outbreaks detected in layer breeders were as follows: SHS (2), bumble foot (2), egg-drop syndrome (3) and avian infectious bronchitis (IB) (1). The disease outbreaks detected in commercial layer flocks were as follows: egg-drop syndrome (5), avian infectious laryngotracheitis (2), avian IB (nephrogenic strain) (1), malabsorption (1), avian tuberculosis (Mycobacterium avium) (1), Marek's disease (1), fowl pox (1), Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica Enteritidis infection (1), salpingitis (1) and Heterakis gallinae infestation (1). The disease outbreaks detected in broiler flocks were as follows: colibacillosis (40), infectious bursal disease (Gumboro disease) (15), malabsorption syndrome (8), avian infectious laryngotracheitis (8), paratyphoids (salmonellosis) (7), femoral head necrosis (8), SHS (6), avian mycoplasmosis (Mycoplasma gallisepticum infection) (6), synovitis (7), avian IB (6), botulism (1), avian encephalomyelitis (1) and gangrenous dermatitis (1). Diseases which occurred and which were reported for the first time in Lebanon were as follows: bumble foot, femoral head necrosis, avian IB (nephrogenic strain), malabsorption syndrome and SHS. This surveillance helped to establish baseline data concerning the predominant poultry diseases in Lebanon. Such information is a prerequisite for future regional and international collaboration to identify the source of the aetiological agents and to control their spread to neighbouring countries.

Abstract
Two horses, presented for investigation of chronic weight loss despite normal to increased feed intake, had flat oral glucose absorption curves, suggesting malabsorption. The cause of the apparent malabsorption was not evident grossly or on light microscopic examination of the intestinal tract. Both horses survived long term and at follow-up examination had regained weight and their capacity to absorb glucose. These cases illustrate that flat glucose absorption curves may occur in horses with no obvious intestinal lesions, that they may revert to normal and that the results of these tests should be interpreted with caution.

Abstract
Plasma chemistry and haematological studies were conducted on chickens with coccidiosis. Male White Leghorn chickens, of two weeks old, were inoculated with 5 x 10(4) Eimeria tenella sporulated oocysts or with 1 x 10(6) E acervulina sporulated oocysts. Blood samples were taken four, seven and 11 days after inoculation. A wet chemistry system was applied to measure the plasma activities of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, gamma glutamyltransferase, creatine kinase, amylase and lactate dehydrogenase and the concentrations of creatine, total bilirubin, urate, total cholesterol, total protein, albumin, glucose and triglycerides. A dry chemistry system was applied to measure sodium, potassium, chloride and calcium. The number of red blood cells and packed cell volume were determined by a micro cell counter and blood pH was measured with a blood gas analyser. The erythrocyte count, packed cell volume, sodium and chloride levels in the chickens infected with E tenella were significantly (P < 0.05) lower than those of the uninfected controls. The significant decrease in blood pH of the chickens infected with E acervulina suggests malabsorption associated with duodenal lesions induced by the infection.

Abstract
Day-old male, meat-type chicks raised in brooder batteries were infected by orally administering an inoculum prepared from intestines of broiler chicks infected with stunting syndrome (SS). Naive controls were kept in a parallel room. The chicks were fed a commercial starter diet supplemented with two levels of enzyme preparations to 14 d of age. The experiment was continued to the age of 6 wk in order to estimate compensatory feed intake and growth. In a parallel study, digestibility of the feed was determined from 1 to 3 wk of age with control or inoculated chicks. The enzymes amylase and proteases were produced by Bacillus subtilis and Penicillium emersonii. Enzyme supplementation had no effect on feed intake, growth, or feed utilization, or on digestibility of fat, starch, protein, or energy. Because enzyme supplementation did not consistently affect performance of chicks and no interactions were observed between enzyme supplementation and infection status, data are presented for effects of infection only. Inoculation of SS-infective material reduced performance to 4 wk. Compensatory growth and feed intake were observed from the age of 4 wk onward. At the age of 6 wk the slight retardation of the inoculated chicks was not significant. On Week 1, retention of fat, starch, protein, and energy was significantly depressed in the inoculated chicks. At the age of 2 wk, retention of starch was not depressed, and at the age of 3 wk, the only consistent depression was that observed for fat. The proventriculus weight and content were consistently higher in inoculated chicks, as were the small intestine and intestinal content. The pH of the gizzard content was higher, and that of the small intestine content was lower, in the inoculated birds than in their control counterparts. Stunting syndrome infection was accompanied by a significant depression of trypsin activity in the pancreas at the age of 1 and 2 wk. At these periods, amylase and chymotrypsin were not affected. At 6 wk of age, the activities of amylase, trypsin, and chymotrypsin in the pancreas were higher in the inoculated than in the control birds. In the intestinal chime, amylase, trypsin, and chymotrypsin activities were lower in the inoculated birds on Week 1 and 2 (NS for amylase on Week 1). On Week 6, the activity of all enzymes assayed was higher in the inoculated birds (NS for amylase). It is suggested that the main factors depressing feed intake and growth in SS-infected birds are most probably beyond those of digestion.

Abstract
Magnesium is absorbed mainly from the reticulo-rumen and there are a number of factors reducing its absorption. The chief of these is the increased potential difference across the rumen epithelium caused by increased intraruminal potassium concentration. A significant amount of magnesium leaves the extracellular fluid each day as saliva. As only a portion of it is reabsorbed the rest is lost through the endogenous faecal excretion of magnesium. Thus, during impaired magnesium absorption, saliva could play an important role in the aetiology of hypomagnesaemia especially during dietary sodium depletion and the resultant increase in the potassium content of the saliva.

Abstract
In preliminary studies feeding the poorly absorbed carbohydrate sorbitol at 2.3 g/kg body weight as an indication of maximal fermentative capacity failed to produce the expected large increase in breath hydrogen excretion but did produce a transient diarrhea in five out of six control calves. Twelve healthy control and eighteen diarrheic calves were fed lactose or D-xylose on consecutive days at 1.15 g/kg body weight and a concentration of 46 g/L. Breath and blood samples were collected at 1 h intervals from 0 to 7 h. After administration of lactose, there was a significant increase in breath hydrogen excretion in diarrheic versus control calves. The increase in plasma glucose concentrations was delayed in diarrheic calves but the area under the absorption curve was similar in control and diarrheic calves. After administration of D-xylose, breath hydrogen excretion did not increase significantly but plasma D-xylose concentrations were significantly reduced in diarrheic calves. The pathogens commonly isolated from the feces were Cryptosporidium species, rotavirus and coronavirus. The number of pathogens and the severity of the calves' acid-base deficit were not related to the severity of carbohydrate malabsorption. Decreased absorption of lactose and D-xylose may be the result of intestinal villous atrophy caused by viral or parasite infection. It was concluded that carbohydrate malabsorption rather than a specific lactose maldigestion is a significant problem in diarrheic calves. Diarrheic calves appear to digest and absorb lactose when fed in small amounts.

Abstract
Serum retinol, retinyl palmitate, and total vitamin A concentrations, and jejunoileal morphology were examined in neonatal calves infected with Cryptosporidium parvum. Group-1 calves served as noninfected controls and, after an adjustment period, were given 50 ml of saline solution i.v. every 12 hours for 6 days. Group-2 calves were inoculated with 10(7) C parvum oocysts and, after the onset of diarrhea, were given 50 ml of saline solution i.v. every 12 hours for 6 days. Group-3 calves were inoculated with 10(7) C parvum oocysts and, after the onset of diarrhea, were treated with difluoromethylornithine (DFMO, 200 mg/kg of body weight i.v., q 12 h) for 6 days. Group-4 calves were naturally infected with C parvum. Jejunoileal biopsy specimens were excised from calves of groups 1-3 at 3 and again at 15 to 16 days of age. During the course of diarrhea and 3 days after saline or DFMO administration, water-miscible retinyl palmitate was administered orally (2,750 micrograms/kg) to each calf in each group. Cryptosporidium parvum infection was associated with significant (P < or = 0.05) reduction in postadministration serum retinol, retinyl palmitate, and total vitamin A concentrations in calves of groups 2, 3, and 4. Cryptosporidium parvum infection caused significant (P < or = 0.05) reduction in villus height. Decreased villus height, villus blunting and fusion, and attenuation of the intestinal mucosa were associated with reduced absorption of vitamin A, as indicated by lower peak postadministration retinyl palmitate concentration in C parvum-infected calves. Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of removing bacteria, including long segmented filamentous organisms (LSFO), from inoculum known to induce stunting syndrome (SS) in poults. Experiment 1 consisted of two identically designed trials. In each trial, each of four treatments was assigned to an isolator. Three treatments consisted of dosing, by crop intubation, groups of 1-day-old poults with unfiltered SS inoculum or filtrate of inoculum passed through .45- or .20-micron microfilters. Uninoculated poults were dosed with inoculum carrier, saline. Experiment 2 was done in battery facilities. Three rooms were used and each room housed one of three treatment groups. Triplicate pens of 10 poults each within each room were dosed by crop intubation with saline (uninoculated), unfiltered inoculum, or filtrate from .20-micron filtration. As compared with uninoculated poults, weight gain through 7 days was reduced 20% (P less than .05) by unfiltered and filtered inocula in both experiments. Jejunal maltase activity also was decreased (P less than .01) by unfiltered and filtered inocula. Feed efficiency (FE) was not determined in Experiment 1, but in Experiment 2, FE from 1 to 14 days of age was impaired by inoculum, irrespective of filtration. This effect was not evident during the 14- to 20-day period. The observation that the adverse effects of giving filtered inoculum to poults were the same as those caused by unfiltered inoculum indicated that bacteria, including LSFO, were not primary causative agents of the SS experimentally induced in poults.

Abstract
A D-xylose absorption test was performed on 40 horses with chronic weight loss which could not be explained on history, physical findings, dietary evaluation, or initial laboratory data, i.e. unexplained weight loss. Six of the horses had D-xylose malabsorption and at post-mortem examination small intestinal lesions which accounted for the malabsorption were found in five. Five of the horses with normal absorption were examined post mortem and no lesions in any organs were found to account for the weight loss. The other 29 cases were still unexplained, and lost to follow-up.

Abstract
Because pale-bird syndrome (PBS), defined as the failure of birds to realize the color potential of their diet, has been demonstrated to be caused by malabsorption or by hyperexcretion of carotenoids, a method for measuring malabsorption of carotenoids would be useful. The absorption of dietary canthaxanthin, a red diketocarotenoid, into serum during aflatoxicosis was measured in an experiment with a 2 x 9 factorial arrangement of treatments (0 and 5 micrograms of aflatoxin/g of diet; serum collected at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 24 h after a standard meal fed to four groups of 10 3-wk-old birds). Serum canthaxanthin levels determined by HPLC attained plateau values between 8 and 14 h after the meal. The absorption of canthaxanthin was depressed significantly (P less than .05) in birds with aflatoxicosis from 4 to 24 h after feeding the standard meal. Four field flocks diagnosed as having PBS were tested for malabsorption by intubating 10 birds with a standard amount of canthaxanthin and measuring serum canthaxanthin 12 h later. One flock had about 85% normally pigmented birds and 15% extremely pale birds, the second flock had a coccidiosis history, the third had a Newcastle disease history, and the fourth had a history of both coccidiosis and Newcastle disease. The flocks were 5- to 6-wk-old, received feed of the same manufacture, and their disease outbreaks had occurred 2 wk earlier.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
One-day-old poults were placed on litter on which poults had previously developed diarrhea, increased mortality, stunting, and malabsorption. Gross, microscopic, and morphometric evaluations of the proximal tibiotarsal growth plate, along with analysis of plasma calcium, phosphorus, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 concentrations, were conducted for 3 weeks to determine the development and character of skeletal lesions. Poults developed enteritis with diarrhea and dehydration. Body weights and shank lengths were significantly decreased. Plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 concentrations were significantly decreased. Plasma calcium was significantly decreased on day 8. Plasma phosphorus concentrations were significantly increased on day 8 and were significantly decreased on days 15, 18, and 22. Growth plates narrowed on days 8 and 11 and expanded on days 15, 18, and 22. The proliferating-prehypertrophy zone significantly decreased in length on days 11, 18, and 22, and significantly increased in length on day 15. The unmineralized hypertrophy zone was significantly increased in length on days 15, 18, and 22. The mineralized hypertrophy zone was significantly decreased in length on all days. Skeletal lesions during the poult malabsorption syndrome evolved from an early osteoporotic lesion associated with hypocalcemia to a rachitic lesion associated with depleted vitamin D and hypophosphatemia.

Abstract
Skeletal deformities, a major contributing factor to economic losses in market-age turkeys, may be associated with the poult malabsorption syndrome. A study was performed to determine whether the naturally occurring malabsorption syndrome produces skeletal lesions in turkeys at market age. Poults were placed on litter on which poults had previously developed malabsorption. Exposed poults developed enteric disease with 21% mortality during the first 3 weeks. Controls had no enteric disease and no mortality. At the end of the study, 20-week-old exposed turkeys weighed 0.621 kg (5%) less than controls and had a higher incidence of angular limb deformities with significantly higher angulation scores. Exposed turkeys also had a greater incidence of rotated tibias and bowed tibias. The mechanical property of tibial shear strength was significantly lower in turkeys that had survived the earlier poult malabsorption syndrome.

One-day-old poults were placed on littler on which poults had previously developed diarrhea, increased mortality, and stunting. Small intestines, pancreas, and liver were evaluated histologically. Morphometric evaluations were conducted to determine villous length and crypt depth. Poults were evaluated for malabsorption utilizing D-xylose and lipid absorption tests. Compared with controls, the gastrointestinal tract of affected birds was grossly distended, was fluid-filled, and had thin, flaccid walls on days 5 and 8. Ceca were distended with brown watery fluid and gas on days 5, 8, and 12. No histologic lesions were present in the liver, pancreas, or pancreatic ducts, and only mild inflammatory changes were present in the small intestine. Villous atrophy and crypt hypertrophy were present in the small intestine on days 5, 8, 12, 16, and 21. Morphometry revealed significant decreases in villous lengths and increases in crypt depth throughout the trial. D-Xylose and lipid absorption were significantly decreased on days 8 and 11. Intestinal epithelial damage by infectious agents with subsequent villous atrophy is postulated to have produced malabsorptive diarrhea.

Abstract
The progression of changes in carotenoid metabolism during pale-bird syndrome caused by a coccidial infection was investigated. Male broiler chickens 15 days of age on a yellow corn and soybean meal-based diet were infected with Eimeria acervulina oocysts and their serum, liver, and toe webs were sampled at 0, 4, 6, and 10 days postinfection for HPLC analysis of carotenoids. At 4 days postinfection a drastic reduction (71%) in serum lutein, the main body carotenoid, and smaller reductions in liver (58%) and toe webs (38%) occurred. Derivative forms of lutein, mainly esters, continued to be lost from tissues for 10 days postinfection. These carotenoids were apparently lost via the intestinal tract because birds placed on a white corn and soybean meal-based diet at time of infection had lutein in their jejunal contents even at 7 days postinfection. The loss of carotenoids from the body was accompanied by a decreasing ability to absorb canthaxanthin, a red carotenoid, from the intestinal contents. The absorption of canthaxanthin measured at 0, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 days reached its low point of 1% of preinfection ability on Day 5 before a slow recovery commenced. Thus, the pale-bird syndrome caused by E. acervulina appeared to be the result of a loss of previously absorbed carotenoids coupled with drastic malabsorption of dietary carotenoids.

Abstract
Specificity of the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) for the diagnosis of small intestinal malabsorption in the horse was assessed by comparing the results of OGTT with the results of a histopathological examination of the small intestine in 42 adult horses affected by chronic weight loss. The horses were assigned to three groups on the basis of the results of the test. Five horses were considered to have a normal OGTT absorption result (Group 1); all the horses had a histologically normal small intestine. Twenty-five horses had a partial malabsorption result (Group 2) seven of which had normal small intestinal morphology, whereas the remaining 18 had a variety of pathological lesions including lymphosarcoma, villous atrophy, granulomatous enteritis and eosinophilic gastroenteritis. Twelve of the 42 horses had a total malabsorption result (Group 3), and all had a severe infiltrative lesion in the small intestinal wall (either lymphosarcoma or granulomatous enteritis).

Abstract
Techniques for the measurement of breath hydrogen excretion have been evaluated in dogs and the breath hydrogen test has been shown to be useful for clinical diagnosis and as a research tool. A simple method was developed for collection of expired air and measurement of breath hydrogen concentrations in cats, which enabled demonstration of carbohydrate malassimilation. Breath hydrogen concentrations were measured in healthy cats after food was withheld and after xylose and lactulose administration. Breath samples were collected by use of an open flow system with the cat confined in an acrylic plastic chamber. Breath hydrogen excretion did not exceed 0.53 ml of hydrogen/h in cats not fed. Breath hydrogen concentrations after the ingestion of xylose, a pentose sugar given orally at 0.75 g/kg of body weight, were not significantly higher from those of cats not fed. After ingestion of 3.35 g of lactulose, a nonabsorbable disaccharide, breath hydrogen excretion increased and breath hydrogen concentrations were significantly higher by 45 minutes (P less than 0.05) and 60 minutes (P less than 0.01) from breath hydrogen concentrations measured in cats not fed and after xylose administration. Administration of lactulose at an increased dosage resulted in further significant (P less than 0.01) increases in breath hydrogen excretion. In this study, mouth-to-cecum transit times were variable. A mean +/- SEM mouth-to-cecum transit time of 86 +/- 6 minutes was calculated from measurement of breath hydrogen excretion after oral administration of 3.35 g of lactulose.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Inherited selective intestinal malabsorption of cobalamin (Cbl) was observed in a family of giant schnauzer dogs. Family studies and breeding experiments demonstrated simple autosomal recessive inheritance of this disease. Affected puppies exhibited chronic inappetence and failure to thrive beginning between 6 and 12 wk of age. Neutropenia with hypersegmentation, anemia with anisocytosis and poikilocytosis, and megaloblastic changes of the bone marrow were present. Serum Cbl concentrations were low, and methylmalonic aciduria and homocysteinemia were present. Parenteral, but not oral, cyanocobalamin administration rapidly eliminated all signs of Cbl deficiency except for low serum Cbl concentrations. Cbl malabsorption in affected dogs was documented by oral administration of [57Co]cyanocobalamin with or without simultaneous oral administration of intrinsic factor or normal dog gastric juice. Quantitation and function studies of intrinsic factor and transcobalamin-II from affected dogs revealed no abnormality. Other gastrointestinal functions and ileal morphology were normal, indicating a selective defect of Cbl absorption at the level of the ileal enterocyte. Immunoelectron microscopy of ileal biopsies showed that the receptor for intrinsic factor-Cbl complex was absent from the apical brush border microvillus pits of affected dogs. This canine disorder resembles inherited selective intestinal Cbl malabsorption (Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome) in humans, and is a spontaneously occurring animal model of early onset Cbl deficiency.

Abstract
Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of an induced enteric disorder, stunting syndrome (SS), on young turkeys. One-day-old poults were dosed per os with tryptose-phosphate broth (control) or inoculum (inoc) prepared from intestines of SS-affected poults. Inoculation depressed gain (P less than .001) and feed consumption (P less than .001) and impaired (P less than .001) the utilization of feed for gain up to 9 days of age (utilization was 2.02, 2.62 in inoc and 1.27, 1.61 in control poults at 5 and 9 days of age, respectively). Inoculation impaired (P less than .05) retention of nutrients at 8 days of age (dry matter, fat, protein, and ash retentions were 82.5, 88.8, 81.3, and 77.8% in controls and 79.3, 85.6, 74.5, and 74.1% in inoc poults, respectively). Small intestinal weight per 100 g of body weight was greater (P less than .001) in inoc poults, but empty weights per length of jejunum and ileum were less (P less than .05). The jejunal mucosa in inoc poults was thinner, exhibited extensive erosion of villi tips, and had microvilli that seemed to be fused when observed by using scanning electron microscopy. Activities of disaccharidases in the jejunum and ileum of inoc poults were less (P less than .05) than in control poults. In a second experiment, two additional treatments were included, a pair-fed control and a negative control. Control poults pair-fed with the inoc poults grew more rapidly (P less than .01) than inoc poults. The depression in feed consumption due to inoculation accounted for only 54% of the growth depression. Poults inoculated with a suspension prepared from intestines obtained from healthy poults (negative control) performed similarly to controls. Thus, the adverse effects of the SS-inoculum were due to an agent(s) that was present int he intestines of SS-affected poults but not in intestines of healthy poults.
