Abstract
A total of 150 adult quails, aged 8 wk, were divided into 5 groups to study the effect of sumac seed powder on reproductive and productive parameters, egg quality, digestive enzymes, and quail breeders' blood profiles. Dietary supplements containing sumac powder were formulated as follows: group 1 (G1) (control, only basal diet); group 2 (G2) (basal diet + 1 g sumac powder/kg diet); group 3 (G3) (basal diet + 2 g sumac powder/kg diet); group 4 (G4) (basal diet + 3 g sumac powder/kg diet); and group 5 (G5) (basal diet + 4 g sumac powder/kg diet). The feed conversion ratio was significantly higher at all levels of sumac powder (P < 0.05) compared to the control group (G1). Overall, during the study (8-16 wk), quail-fed 3 g sumac powder/kg diet (G4) showed no significant increase (P > 0.05) in the feed intake compared to the control group. Sumac powder supplementation significantly (P < 0.05) increased egg number, egg weight, egg mass, fertility, and hatchability. While supplementing with sumac powder did not impact other egg quality parameters, it did significantly (P < 0.05) increase yolk percentage, Haugh unit, and unit surface shell weight. Furthermore, when compared to the control group (G1), birds given 2, 3, or 4 g of sumac powder/kg diet showed a significant improvement (P < 0.05) in hematological parameters such as red blood cells, white blood cells, and hemoglobin, as well as a decrease in glucose levels. Feeding quail with a 3 g sumac powder/kg diet (G4) resulted in significantly (P < 0.05) higher globulin levels and improved albumin/globulin ratio compared to other treatments and control (G1). Sumac powder intake significantly (P < 0.05) reduced plasma lipid profile, liver enzymes (aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase), and kidney functions (creatinine, and urea). Furthermore, the supplementation of sumac powder resulted in a substantial increase (P < 0.05) in the levels of amylase, lipase, and protease. Sumac powder administration also significantly (P < 0.05) improves immunity by boosting IgM, IgG, IgA, and lysozyme levels in quail breeders' plasma. Supplementing with sumac powder, on the other hand, increased levels of reduced glutathione, total antioxidant capacity, catalase, and superoxide dismutase. The results of the current study indicated that the addition of 1, 2, 3, and 4 g of sumac powder to the diet of Japanese quail breeders led to improvements in egg quality, digestive enzymes, reproductive and productive performances, and most blood hematological and biochemical parameters.

Abstract
The experiment was conducted to study the effect of chicory root powder on the gut performance of broilers. For this purpose, two hundred commercial male broiler chicks were randomly divided into 5 treatment groups with 8 replications of 5 birds each and reared in battery brooders up to 42 days of age. The experimental design consisted of; T1 basal diet (BD) without antibiotic, T2: BD + antibiotic (BMD at 500 gm/ton), T3: BD + chicory root powder (0.5%), T4: BD + chicory root powder (1.0%), T5: BD + chicory root powder (1.5%). The results revealed that supplementation of 1.0% chicory root powder recorded significantly (P<0.05) higher body weight gain, feed intake and better feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to antibiotic, control and 0.5 & 1.5% chicory powder at 42 days of age. Supplementation of various levels of chicory root powder significantly (P<0.05) lowered (P<0.05) the pH in duodenum, jejunum, ileum and caecum compared to control. Supplementation of chicory root powder (0.5, 1.0 & 1.5%) significantly (P<0.05) decreased the E. coli and Salmonella counts and (P<0.05) increased the Lactobacilli counts in ileum when compared to control and antibiotic groups. Supplementation of chicory (1.0% and 1.5%) groups significantly (P<0.05) increased the villus height (VH), crypt depth (CD), VH:CD ratio and villus width (VW) in the duodenum, ileum and jejunum at 42 d of age. Supplementation of chicory 1.0% and 1.5% groups significantly (P<0.05) increased the goblet cell number in duodenum, jejunum and ileum of broilers. Therefore, chicory root powder (1.0 and 1.5%) can be used as an alternative to antibiotic for improving gut performance of broiler chicken.

Abstract
<b>Background and Objective:</b> Nowadays, Dyes is widely used to improve fingerprints identification test. Natural dyes are another interesting way that can be used instead of chemical dyes because of its non-toxicity and lower cost. In this research, the development of rust powder from <i>Plumeria</i> tree was applied for fingerprints identification due to its fluorescence property under UV. Rust and Small Particle Reagent (SPR), containing ZnCO<sub>3 </sub>were applied to detect hidden fingerprints on non-porous surfaces in both dried and wet condition. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> Yellowish Rust from <i>Plumeria</i> tree was extracted with ethanol, grinded, dried and then mixed with ZnCO<sub>3</sub>. Powder slurry was sprayed over fingerprint mark on different surfaces and monitored in both dried and wet condition. Visualization of fingerprint under UV was observed. Scanning microscope (SEM), UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-VIS), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray (EDX) were also used to characterize physical and chemical properties of rust powder. <b>Results:</b> Fingerprints identification by dust technique using <i>Plumeria</i> rust powder as ingredient, provide best quality enhancement of fingerprints under UV light due to its fluorescent property, whereas a conventional technique of Small Particle Reagent technique (SPR) doesn't show fluorescent under UV. Data from SEM and FTIR show slight adhesion between zinc carbonate particles and rust powder. <b>Conclusion:</b> Fluorescence properties of rust powder is still interesting. Further improvement in powder recipe will be further investigated.

Abstract
The goal of diabetes care is to achieve and maintain good glycemic control over time, so as to prevent or delay the development of micro- and macrovascular complications in type 1 (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, numerous barriers hinder the achievement of this goal, first of all the frequent episodes of hypoglycemia typical in patients treated with insulin as T1D patients, or sulphonylureas as T2D patients. The prevention strategy and treatment of hypoglycemia are important for the well-being of patients with diabetes. Hypoglycemia is strongly associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in diabetic patients, due probably to the release of inflammatory markers and prothrombotic effects triggered by hypoglycemia. Treatment of hypoglycemia is traditionally based on administration of carbohydrates or of glucagon via intramuscular (IM) or subcutaneous injection (SC). The injection of traditional glucagon is cumbersome, such that glucagon is an under-utilized drug. In 1983, it was shown for the first time that intranasal (IN) glucagon increases blood glucose levels in healthy volunteers, and in 1989-1992 that IN glucagon is similar to IM glucagon in resolving hypoglycemia in normal volunteers and in patients with diabetes, both adults and children. IN glucagon was developed in 2010 and continued in 2015; in 2019 IN glucagon obtained approval in the US, Canada, and Europe for severe hypoglycemia in children and adults. In the 2010s, two ready-to-use injectable formulations, a stable non-aqueous glucagon solution and the glucagon analog dasiglucagon, were developed, showing an efficacy similar to traditional glucagon, and approved in the US in 2020 and in 2021, respectively, for severe hypoglycemia in adults and in children. Fast-acting glucagon (nasal administration and injected solutions) appears to represent a major breakthrough in the treatment of severe hypoglycemia in insulin-treated patients with diabetes, both adults and children. It is anticipated that the availability of fast-acting glucagon will expand the use of glucagon, improve overall metabolic control, and prevent hypoglycemia-related complications, in particular cardiovascular complications and cognitive impairment.

Abstract
Tobacco bacterial wilt (TBW) is seriously damages the growth of tobacco. There is an urgent need to find a safer and more effective measure to control TBW. In this study, B. amyloliquefaciens ZM9 and marigold powder were applied to the tobacco roots alone or in combination, and the potential inhibition of TBW was assessed. On the other hand, the effects of these treatments on soil physicochemical properties, rhizosphere microbial community and soil metabolites were also evaluated. The results showed that the application of B. amyloliquefaciens ZM9 or marigold powder alone significantly reduced the abundance of R. solanacearum in rhizosphere soil, while the integrated treatment showed the strongest inhibitory effect. Moreover, the integrated treatment can inhibit the secretion of chemoattractants, and affect the change of rhizosphere soil microbial composition. In conclusion, the combination of antagonistic bacteria agent B. amyloliquefaciens ZM9 with marigold powder can enhance the suppression of TBW. Furthermore, B. amyloliquefaciens ZM9 and marigold have synergistic effects on suppressing TBW by regulation soil physicochemical properties, soil metabolites and microbial structure. This study provide a promising strategy for TBW control by integrated applying of B. amyloliquefaciens ZM9 and marigold powder.

Abstract
Eight weeks feeding experiment was managed to evaluate the impacts of dietary addition of pineapple peel powder (PAPP) and Lactobacillus plantarum CR1T5 (LP) individual or mixed on growth performance, skin mucus and serum immunities, as well as disease resistance of Nile tilapia. Fish (average weight 20.91 ± 0.11 g) were fed four diets: Diet 1 (0 g kg-1 PAPP and 0 CFU g-1 L. plantarum, Diet 2 (10 g kg-1 PAPP), Diet 3 (108 CFU g-1L. plantarum), and Diet 4 (10 g kg-1 PAPP + 108 CFU g-1L. plantarum). Serum and mucus immune responses, as well as growth rate, were assessed every 4 weeks. Ten fish were chosen for the challenge test with Streptococcus agalactiae after 8 weeks post-feeding. The findings showed that PAPP and/or LP diets increased (P ≤ 0.05) growth performance, skin mucus, and serum immune responses. The best data were obtained in fish fed a mixture of PAPP and LP. Nevertheless, no variation (P > 0.05) was recorded between groups fed PAPP or LP. The relative survival percentage (RSP, %) in Diet 2, Diet 3, and Diet 4 was 46.15%, 50.0%, and 73.08%. Fish fed mixture of PAPP + LP recorded the best (P < 0.05) survival rate versus other treatments. The current findings recommended using a mixture of PAPP and LP as promising functional additives for aquaculture practice.

Abstract
Obesity is an enduring medical issue that has raised concerns around the world. Natural plant extracts have shown therapeutic potential in preventing oxidative stress and inflammation related to obesity complications. In this study, Senna alexandrina Mill. leaves were utilized to treat high-fat diet-related metabolic disorders and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases. Plasma biochemical assays were conducted to determine the lipid profiles and oxidative stress parameters, and the gene expression of antioxidant enzymes and inflammatory mediators was measured. Histological stained livers of high-fat diet-fed rats were observed. S. alexandrina leaf powder supplementation prevented the increase in cholesterol and triglyceride levels in high-fat diet-fed rats. Moreover, S. alexandrina leaves also reduced lipid peroxidation and nitric oxide production in these rats. Prevention of oxidative stress by S. alexandrina leaf supplementation in high-fat diet-fed rats is regulated by enhancing the antioxidant enzyme activity, followed by the restoration of corresponding gene expressions, such as NRF-2, HO-1, SOD, and CAT. Histological staining provides further evidence that S. alexandrina leaf supplementation prevents inflammatory cell infiltration, lipid droplet deposition, and fibrosis in the liver of high-fat diet-fed rats. Furthermore, this investigation revealed that S. alexandrina leaf supplementation controlled non-alcoholic fatty liver disease by modulating the expression of fat metabolizing enzymes in high-fat diet-fed rats. Therefore, S. alexandrina leaf supplementation inhibits fatty liver inflammation and fibrosis, suggesting its usefulness in treating non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Thus, this natural leaf extract has potential in treatment of obesity related liver dysfunction.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Poria cocos (Schw.) Wolf (Poria) is a well-known traditional medicinal fungus. It has been considered to possess spleen-invigorating (Jianpi) effects in traditional Chinese medicine, and is used clinically to treat spleen deficiency (Pixu) with symptoms of intestinal disorders such as diarrhea, indigestion, mucositis and weight loss. THE AIM OF THIS STUDY To investigate the protective effects of Poria and its three component fractions (Water-soluble polysaccharides, WP; alkali-soluble polysaccharides, AP; triterpene acids, TA) on cisplatin-induced intestinal injury and explore the underlying mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS C57BL/6 mice were treated with Poria powder (PP), WP, AP and TA by oral gavage respectively for 13 days, and intraperitoneally injected with 10 mg/kg of cisplatin on day 10 to conduct a cisplatin-induced intestinal injury model. Pathological changes of ileum and colon were examined using H&E staining. The composition of gut microbiota and the alteration of host metabolites were characterized by 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing and UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS based untargeted metabolomics analysis. RESULTS PP and WP attenuated the cisplatin-induced ileum and colon injury, and WP alleviated the weight loss and reversed the elevation of IL-2, IL-6 in serum. Both PP and WP could mitigate cisplatin-induced dysbiosis of gut microbiota, in particular PP and WP decreased the abundance of pathogenic bacteria including Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Ruminococcaceae and Helicobacteraceae, while WP promoted the abundance of probiotics, such as Erysipelotrichaceae and Prevotellaceae. Moreover, WP attenuated the cisplatin-induced alteration of metabolic profiles. The levels of potential biomarkers, including xanthine, L-tyrosine, uridine, hypoxanthine, butyrylcarnitine, lysoPC (18:0), linoleic acid, (R)-3-hydroxybutyric acid, D-ribose, thiamine monophosphate, indolelactic acid and plamitic acid, showed significant correlations with intestinal flora. CONCLUSIONS PP and WP possess protective effects against cisplatin-induced intestinal injury via potentially regulating the gut microbiota and metabolic profiles.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the mutagenicity and oral acute toxicity of winter mushroom powder (PW) treated by atmospheric non-thermal plasma (ANP). Winter mushroom powder without plasma treatment (CW) containing an equivalent amount of sodium nitrite as PW was used as a control. The Ames test revealed that the number of revertant colonies did not significantly increase compared to that in the control. Acute toxicity was assessed in rats that were fed a single dose of winter mushroom powder (5000 mg/kg body weight). Results of the acute toxicity test revealed no remarkable clinical symptoms in any of the rats. No significant difference was observed in of the serum biochemical parameters between the treatments. Regardless of the ANP treatment, mild histological changes were observed in few rats in all groups. Therefore, it is concluded that ANP treatment did not cause any mutagenicity or acute toxicity in the winter mushroom.

Abstract
Infertility has recently been a common issue for which multiple medicinal as well as surgical treatments are available. Beta vulgaris commonly referred to as garden beet is one of the most utilized vegetable especially in salad dressings. The Present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of lyophilized beet root on fertility and reproductive hormones. The study was carried out in January 2017 on two different animal models. For fertility purpose albino mice of both genders weighing 20-25gm were divided into 5 pairs for each group, First group was control given distilled water, next was treated I being given beetroot 500mg/kg and last one was given 1000mg/kg beetroot. Similarly 5 pairs were made of buck and doe's weighing 1.75gm-2.5gm and labelled as Control, Treated I and Treated II and were administered distilled water, 500mg/kg and 1000mg/kg beetroot respectively. The pups were again mated after they grew up and in this way F1 generation was also observed. The kits were observed for presence of anomaly. The estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels were evaluated at baseline, during pregnancy and post pregnancy in rabbit model. Improved fertility with no anomalies in the pups and kits were observed. The reproductive hormones were also highly significantly increased (p<0.001) as compared to baseline values. The study suggests that beetroot would be very beneficial in improving fertility and maintaining hormonal level during fertility hence it would prove to be very beneficial in maintaining pregnancy as well as treating infertility.

Abstract
Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) is known to be highly atherogenic. Thus, decreasing the blood levels of Ox-LDL through dietary means is an important approach to reduce cardiovascular events in high-risk individuals. In this randomized placebo-controlled human interventional trial, we aimed to evaluate whether Perilla frutescens leaf powder (PLP) ameliorates Ox-LDL and home blood pressure, along with its biological antioxidant potential. Healthy Japanese volunteers aged 30-60 years (n = 60) were randomized to PLP and placebo groups. The PLP group consumed PLP dried using a microwave under reduced pressure, and the placebo group consumed pectin fiber daily for 6 months. Home blood pressure, serum biochemical parameters, and fatty acid profiles of erythrocyte plasma membranes were analyzed. Plasma Ox-LDL levels significantly decreased in the PLP group but not in the placebo group. Mean changes in the biological antioxidant potential and alpha-linolenic acid levels in the erythrocyte plasma membrane were significantly increased in the PLP group than in the placebo group. In subjects with prehypertension (systolic blood pressure [SBP] ³ 120 mmHg), the mean reduction in morning or nocturnal SBP was significantly greater in the PLP group than in the placebo group. Thus, PLP intake may be an effective intervention to prevent cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
This study was proposed to examine the effects of pine needles powder (Pinus brutia) supplementation on growth performance, breast meat composition, and antioxidant status in broilers fed linseed oil-based diets. For this purpose, a total of 210, Ross-308 1-day-old male broiler chicks were allocated to 5 experimental groups each containing 42 birds. Broilers were fed a linseed oil-based basal diet supplemented with 0% (control), 0.25% (P1), 0.50% (P2), 0.75% (P3), and 1% (P4) pine needles powder. During the 42-D feeding period, no significant differences were observed between experimental groups for body weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio; however, carcass yield was increased linearly with pine needles powder supplementation. No marked changes in the breast meat chemical composition were observed among experimental groups. Supplemental pine needles powder linearly decreased the malondialdehyde concentration in breast meat and liver tissues; however, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity of breast meat samples remained unaffected. No significant variation was observed among experimental groups for superoxide dismutase enzyme activity in blood erythrocyte lysates, but blood serum total oxidation status tended to decrease with pine needles powder supplementation. In conclusion, results suggested that pine needles powder supplementation to broiler diets could be a viable option to improve the animal antioxidant status and meat oxidative stability; however, supplementation of Pinus brutia needles powder up to 1% into broiler diets was not sufficient to efficiently curb the fat-induced oxidation in meat. Further investigation is needed to determine the full antioxidant potential of pine needles powder supplementation in poultry by comparing different pine species, evaluating the bioavailability of their active compounds and determining most effective dietary concentration for broiler meat production without any adverse effects.

Abstract
Vegetables and beans are nutrient-dense foods with innate potential to mediate diabetes in a variety of cultures. The present study aims at evaluating vegetables and beans for assessing their glycemic index and response in raising glucose levels in human model. Powdered formulations of vegetables and beans were designed to modulate glycemic response of carbohydrate-rich staples. A randomized, crossover trial was conducted in healthy young adults (n = 24) who were challenged with vegetable powder-supplemented chapatti (VPSC), bean powder-supplemented chapatti (BPSC) and all-purpose wheat flour chapatti (APFC) to evaluate their postprandial glucose (PPG) and postprandial insulin (PPI) responses. In comparison with APFC, feeding VPSC and BPSC to healthy volunteers anticipated significant reduction in PPG (44% reduction in incremental area under the curve (AUC) for VPSC and 46% reduction in incremental AUC for BPSC, p = 0.005). Likewise, significant reduction in PPI levels was observed for VPSC (59%, p = 0.012) and BPSC (47%, p = 0.002) compared to APFC-treated group. The study concludes wheat flour enrichment with vegetables and beans powder as a viable approach to develop cost effective and culturally acceptable low glycemic foods bearing acceptable sensory attributes.

Abstract
The mass production of mosquitoes is becoming more wide-spread due to the increased application of the sterile insect technique (SIT) and other genetic control programmes. Due to the variable availability and high cost of the bovine liver powder (BLP) constituent of many current larval diets, there is an urgent demand for new ingredients in order to support sustainable and efficient mosquito production while reducing rearing cost, without affecting the quality of the insects produced. Two black soldier fly (BSF) powder-based diet formulations (50% tuna meal, 35% BSF powder, 15% brewer's yeast and 50% tuna meal + 50% BSF powder) were tested for their suitability to support the development of Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus mosquitoes in mass-rearing conditions. Overall, the results indicate that the use of the BSF powder did not negatively impact the development and quality of the produced insects in terms of time to pupation, adult production and male flight ability. Furthermore, depending on the species and diet formulations, there were improvements in some parameters such as female body size, egg production, egg hatch rate and male longevity. BSF powder is a valuable ingredient that can effectively replace costly BLP for the mass production of high quality Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus mosquitoes. Both diet formulations can be used for Ae. aegypti showing high plasticity to nutrition sources. However, for Ae. albopictus we recommend the combination including brewer's yeast.

Abstract
Topical vancomycin has been shown to effectively reduce infections after spinal surgery while remaining safe and cost-effective; however, there are few studies evaluating topical vancomycin in total hip arthroplasty. The authors hypothesized that the incidence of periprosthetic joint infection would decrease with the use of topical vancomycin in total hip arthroplasty and that topical vancomycin would be cost-effective. A retrospective patient chart review was performed to evaluate consecutive primary cementless total hip arthroplasties performed in the authors' hospital system between April 2015 and December 2016. Demographic data were collected. Periprosthetic joint infection was defined by Musculoskeletal Infection Society criteria. Statistical analysis included t test, Fisher's exact test, and logistic regression. The costs of vancomycin and postoperative infection were used to determine the absolute risk reduction (1/number needed to treat) threshold needed for topical vancomycin to be cost-effective. In this study, 309 patients (55.7%) undergoing total hip arthroplasty were treated with topical vancomycin, and 246 patients (44.3%) did not receive treatment. There were 2 infections in the vancomycin group (0.6% incidence), and 4 in the no vancomycin group (1.6% incidence). There was no statistical difference in infection rate between the 2 cohorts (P=.414). The absolute risk reduction was 0.98%, and the number needed to treat with topical vancomycin was 102 patients to prevent 1 periprosthetic joint infection. Topical vancomycin ($12 per vial) resulted in an expected cost savings of $904 per patient. Topical vancomycin is inexpensive and cost-effective. Although not statistically significant, the topical vancomycin group had a 60% lower incidence of infection. Further research regarding appropriate prophylactic topical and intravenous antibiotic use is needed prior to widespread adoption. [Orthopedics. 2019; 42(5):e430-e436.].

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the predictive power of computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based dispersion parameters in the development of a new inline DPI that is actuated with low volumes of air. METHODS Four new versions of a dose aerosolization and containment (DAC)-unit DPI were created with varying inlet and outlet orifice sizes and analyzed with results from five previous designs. A concurrent in vitro and CFD analysis was conducted to predict the emitted dose (ED; as a % of loaded dose) and aerosol mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) produced by each device when actuated with 10 ml air bursts. CFD simulations of device operation were used to predict flow field and particle-based dispersion parameters. RESULTS Comparisons of experimental and CFD results indicated that multiple flow field and particle-based dispersion parameters could be used to predict ED (minimum RMS Error = 4.9%) and MMAD (minimum RMS Error = 0.04 μm) to a high degree of accuracy. Based on experiments, the best overall device produced mean (standard deviation; SD) ED = 82.9(4.3)% and mean MMAD (SD) = 1.73(0.07)μm, which were in close agreement with the CFD predictions. CONCLUSIONS A unique relationship was identified in the DAC-unit DPI in which reducing turbulence also reduced the MMAD.

Abstract
We determined the serum uric acid-lowering effects of combined daily supplementation of glycine and tryptophan in patients with mild hyperuricemia using a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover clinical trial design. Japanese healthy adult males and females with mild hyperuricemia (fasting serum uric acid of 6.6–7.9 mg/dL) ingested a powder mixture containing 3.0 g of glycine and 0.2 g of tryptophan or a placebo powder once daily at bedtime for 6 weeks. Combined supplementation with glycine and tryptophan significantly decreased serum uric acid levels (from 7.1 mg/dL to 6.7 mg/dL, p = 0.004) before and after the trial. Serum uric acid concentrations significantly decreased in the subjects supplemented with the amino acid mixture compared with those in placebo-treated subjects (p = 0.028). In addition, the combination treatment with glycine and tryptophan decreased serum triglyceride levels (from 119 mg/dL to 86 mg/dL, p = 0.002). Increased solubility of uric acid caused by urinary pH were likely contributors to the serum uric acid-lowering effects of the amino acid mixture.

Abstract
PURPOSE Dissolution behavior of dry powder inhaler (DPI) antibiotic formulations in the airways may affect their efficacy especially for poorly-soluble antibiotics such as azithromycin. The main objective of this study was to understand the effects of surface composition on the dissolution of spray dried azithromycin powders by itself and in combination with colistin. METHODS Composite formulations of azithromycin (a poorly water-soluble molecule) and colistin (a water-soluble molecule) were produced by spray drying. The resultant formulations were characterized for particle size, morphology, surface composition, solid-state properties, solubility and dissolution. RESULTS The results demonstrate that surfaces composition has critical impacts on the dissolution of composite formulations. Colistin was shown to increase the solubility of azithromycin. For composite formulations with no surface colistin, azithromycin released at a similar dissolution rate as the spray-dried azithromycin alone. An increase in surface colistin concentration was shown to accelerate the dissolution of azithromycin. The dissolution of colistin from the composite formulations was significantly slower than the spray-dried pure colistin. In addition, FTIR spectrum showed intermolecular interactions between azithromycin and colistin in the composite formulations, which could contribute to the enhanced solubility and dissolution of azithromycin. CONCLUSIONS Our study provides fundamental understanding of the effects of surface concentration of colistin on azithromycin dissolution of co-spray-dried composite powder formulations.

Abstract
(1) Background: The red seaweed Palmaria mollis (PM), which has a bacon-like taste, is increasingly being included in Western diets. In this study, we evaluate anti-obesity effects of PM using diet-induced obese (DIO) zebrafish and mice models. (2) Methods: We fed PM-containing feed to DIO-zebrafish and mice, and evaluated the anti-obesity effects We also analyzed gene expression changes in their liver and visceral adipose tissues (VAT). (3) Results: PM ameliorated several anti-obesity traits in both animals, including dyslipidaemia, hepatic steatosis, and visceral adiposity. In liver tissues of DIO-zebrafish and mice, PM upregulated gene expressions involved in peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARA) pathways, and downregulated peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG) pathways, suggesting that the lipid-lowering effect of PM might be caused by activation of beta-oxidation and inhibition of lipogenesis. In VAT, PM downregulated genes involved in early and late adipocyte differentiation in zebrafish, but not in mice. (4) Conclusions: We have demonstrated that PM can prevent hepatic steatosis and visceral adiposity for the first time. Dietary supplementation of PM as a functional food may be suitable for obesity prevention and reduction in the prevalence of obesity-related diseases.

Abstract
The present study investigated the potential of potato peel powders, high in bioactive phenolic compounds and glycoalkaloids, to reduce weight gain in mice consuming a high-fat diet. Potato peel powders were prepared from the following fresh commercial potato varieties by hand-peeling and then freeze-drying and grinding the peels into powder: non-organic (conventionally grown) gold, red, and Russet and organically grown Russet. Mice diets (25% fat by weight) were supplemented with either 10 or 20% potato peel powders for 3 weeks. In comparison to the control diet, the isocaloric and isonitrogenous peel-containing diets induced a reduction in weight gain that ranged from 17-45% (10% peel diets) to 46-73% (20% peel diets), suggesting that differences in weight gain are associated with the potato peel source and peel concentration of the diet. Weight reductions were accompanied by reduced epididymal white adipose tissue ranging from 22 to 80% as well as changes in the microbiota analyzed using next-generation sequencing and in obesity-associated genetic biomarkers determined by the quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Safety aspects and possible mechanisms of the antiobesity effects are discussed in terms of the composition of the bioactive potato peel compounds, which were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography. The results suggest that potato peels, a major peeling byproduct of potato processing used to prepare fries, chips, and potato flour, that showed exceptionally high antiobesity properties in fat mice, have the potential to serve as an antiobesity functional food.

Abstract
This study firstly investigated the feasibility effect and safety of Ganoderma Lucidum Spore Powder (GLSP) for treating patients with epilepsy.Eighteen eligible patients with epilepsy were included. They all received GLSP treatment for a total of 8 weeks. The primary outcome included weekly seizure frequency. The secondary outcomes consisted of each seizure episode, and quality of life, measured by the Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory-31 (QOLIE-31), as well as the adverse events (AEs).After treatment, GLSP can significant reduce the weekly seizure frequency, compared with it before the treatment (P = .04). However, GLSP did not exert promising effect in each seizure episode (P = .13), and quality of life, measured by the QOLIE-31 scale (P = .11). Additionally, only minor AEs occurred during the treatment period.The results of this study showed that GLSP may be effective for reducing the weekly seizure frequency. Further studies are still needed to warrant this result.

Abstract
Frail older adults often experience swallowing disorders, prompting nursing staff to crush tablets, open capsules, and mix drugs into their meals or gelled water. However, crushing drugs can lead to pharmacological and gustatory problems. As crushed drugs can stay in prolonged contact with oral microbial biofilm, the current study aimed to investigate their antimicrobial properties. Crushed drugs were diluted in 1 mL of isotonic water and assayed in vitro for: (a) growth inhibition of five bacterial strains and Candida albicans by the diffusion method; (b) inhibition of Streptococcus salivarius and C. albicans biofilm formation; and (c) elimination of a preformed biofilm of S. salivarius and C. albicans after 5-minute contact. Eight of 29 crushed drugs inhibited bacterial and/or fungal growth on agar plates. Twenty-eight of 29 crushed drugs reduced the total biomass when incubated with S. salivarius, and 28 of 29 crushed drugs inhibited C. albicans biofilm formation. Preformed biomass was reduced by ≥25% by seven of 29 drugs. Crushed drugs may unbalance oral ecosystems and contribute to oral inflammation. [Res Gerontol Nurs. 2018; 11(2):82-90.].

Abstract
The frequency and volume of Asian sand dust (ASD) (Kosa) are increasing in Japan, and it has been reported that ASD may cause adverse respiratory effects. The pulmonary toxicity of ASD has been previously analyzed in mice exposed to ASD particles by intratracheal instillation. To study the pulmonary toxicity induced by inhalation of ASD, ICR mice were exposed by inhalation to 50 or 200 mg/m3 Kanto loam powder, which resembles ASD in elemental composition and particle size, for 6 h a day over 1, 3, 6, 9, or 15 consecutive days. Histological examination revealed that Kanto loam powder induced acute inflammation in the whole lung at all the time points examined. The lesions were characterized by infiltration of neutrophils and macrophages. The intensity of the inflammatory changes in the lung and number of neutrophils in both histological lesions and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) appeared to increase over time. Immunohistochemical staining showed interleukin (IL)-6- and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α-positive macrophages and a decrease in laminin positivity in the inflammatory lesions of the lung tissues. Electron microscopy revealed vacuolar degeneration in the alveolar epithelial cells close to the Kanto loam particles. The nitric oxide level in the BALF increased over time. These results suggest that inhaled Kanto loam powder may induce diffuse and acute pulmonary inflammation, which is associated with increased expression of inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To prove the clinical efficacy of umbilicus application of Huobi Powder for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) with the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome of kidney deficiency dampness by related clinical indexes. METHODS This randomized controlled double-blind clinical study included 72 ED patients with the TCM syndrome of kidney deficiency dampness treated by 12-hour application of Huobi Powder (the trial group, n = 36) or placebo (the control group, n = 36) to the umbilicus qd for 28 consecutive days. We recorded the IIEF-5 and Erection Quality Scale (EQS) scores, TCM syndrome indexes, radial rigidity of the erectile penis, and the angle of penile erection before and after treatment. We established a database with the collected data and performed statistical analysis with the SPSS21.0 software. RESULTS Statistically significant differences were observed after treatment between the trial and control groups in the TCM syndrome-based efficacy (69.44% vs 36.11%, P <0.01) and Western medicine-based clinical effectiveness (77.78% vs 36.11%, P <0.01). The trial group, as compared with the control, showed remarkably decreased TCM syndrome indexes (18.19 ± 9.12 vs 12.97 ± 11.92, P <0.05), increased IIEF-5 score (13.83 ± 4.91 vs 18.67 ± 3.09, P <0.01), radial rigidity of the erectile penis ([53.43 ± 11.05]% vs [71.96 ± 12.92]%, P <0.01) and the angle of penile erection ([42.15 ± 11.77]% vs [66.96 ± 12.34]%, P <0.01), but no significant difference in the EQS score (37.11 ± 16.70 vs 35.33 ± 14.11, P >0.05). CONCLUSIONS Umbilicus application of Huobi Powder has a definite clinical effect on ED with the TCM syndrome of kidney deficiency dampness.

Abstract
We aimed to obtain fundamental information for potential pulmonary delivery of powder aerosols using a clinically-approved nasal high-flow system (AIRVO), with spray-dried mannitol (SD-Man) being a model powder. Compressed air exiting the AIRVO at set 'dispersion' air flow rates dispersed SD-Man loaded in an Osmohaler® into a human nasal airway replica (NAR) coupled downstream to a Next Generation Impactor (NGI) running at specific 'inspiratory' flow rates. Increasing the dispersion flow rate from 30 to 60L/min increased powder deposition in the NAR from 50 to 70% of the emitted dose, while decreased the NGI deposition from 50 to 30% of the emitted dose. The inspiratory flow rate did not affect powder deposition in the NAR and NGI. In contrast, as the inspiratory flow rate was increased from 15 to 40L/min, powder recovery, emitted fraction, and fine particle fraction below 5μm (as aerosol performance indices) were increased from 90, 30 and 5% to 97, 45 and 8% of the loaded dose, respectively. The dispersion flow rate did not change the performance indices. Importantly, heating and humidification of dispersion airflow, loaded doses, and nasal cannula sizes did not greatly affect the aerosol characteristics.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate immunomodulatory effects of Agaricus bisporus, white bottom mushroom powder (WBMP) on common carp (Cyprinus carpio) fingerlings. Carps were fed on different levels of WBMP (0, 0.5, 1 and 2%) for 8 weeks and at the end of feeding trial, skin mucus immune parameters (total Ig, lysozyme and protease activity), cytokines gene expression (TNF-alpha, IL1b, IL8) in intestine as well as serum non-specific immune parameters (total Ig, lysozyme and ACH50) were measured. The results showed significant dose dependent increase of skin mucus immune parameters in carps fed WBMP (P < 0.05). While, no significant difference was observed between 0.5% WBMP and control group (P > 0.05). In case of serum non-specific immune parameters, except lysozyme activity, other parameters (Ig total and ACH50) were significantly affected by dietary inclusion of WBMP (P < 0.05). Also, evaluation of cytokines gene expression in the intestine of carps revealed remarkable up-regulation of TNF-alpha in fish fed 2% WBMP supplemented diet compared other treatment (P < 0.05). Likewise, IL1b gene expression was significantly increased in 1 and 2% WBMP treatments compared to the 0.5% WBMP and control groups (P < 0.05). IL8 gene expression was not affected by inclusion of WBMP in carp diet (P > 0.05). Furthermore, feeding on WBMP supplemented diet significantly improved growth performance (P < 0.05). These results indicated that WBMP can be considered as a promising immunostimulants in early stage of common carp culture.

Abstract
The nasal absorption of macromolecules from powder formulations and the effect of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) as a pharmaceutical excipient on their absorption were studied. Model macromolecules were fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled dextran (average molecular weight of 4.4kDa, FD4) and insulin. The plasma concentration of FD4 after application of the powder containing 50% starch (control) was higher than that after application of the solution, and the absorption from 50% starch powder was enhanced by the substitution of starch with CMC-Na. The fractional absorption of FD4 after administration of the CMC-Na powder formulation was 30% and 40% higher than that after administration from the solution and the starch powder, respectively. The nasal absorption of insulin from the powder and the effect of CMC-Na were similar with those of FD4. The effective absorption of FD4 and insulin after application of powder with CMC-Na could be due to the increase in the nasal residence of FD4 and insulin. No damage in the nasal mucosa or dysfunction of the mucociliary clearance was observed after application of the drug powder and CMC-Na. The present findings indicate that nasal delivery of powder formulations with the addition of CMC-Na as an excipient is a promising approach for improving the nasal absorption of macromolecules.

Abstract
Vibrio anguillarum is one of the most harmful pathogens associated with hemorrhage septicemia syndrome in the half-smooth tongue sole (C. semilaevis) due to its high virulence. In this study, we attempted to treat half-smooth tongue sole with anti-V. anguillarum egg yolk powder to elicit a passive immunity directly against V. anguillarum infection. Anti-V. anguillarum IgY was β-cyclodextrin encapsulated in egg yolk powders as feed, which could avoid antibody inactivation in the gastrointestinal tract of half-smooth tongue sole. The IgY had an inhibiting effect on the infection of V. anguillarum in vitro. The survival rate of half-smooth tongue sole fed with basal diet containing 15% anti-V. anguillarum egg yolk powder was 70% after 7 days post-V. anguillarum challenge (10(7) CFU), which was significantly higher than those fed without anti-V. anguillarum egg yolk powder. As well, the bacterial burden in blood, liver, spleen and kidney was significantly lower in half-smooth tongue sole fed with specific IgY than those fed with non-specific IgY. These results suggested that pathogen-specific IgY may provide a valuable treatment for vibriosis infection and can be a promising food additive.

Abstract
Combining the advantage of higher efficacy due to local pulmonary administration of pyrazinoic acid (POA) and potent effect of pyrazinoic acid ester (PAE) delivered as an aerosol would aid in tuberculosis therapy. A combination spray dried dry powder, composed of POA, PAE (n-propyl POA), maltodextrin and leucine, was prepared for aerosol delivery to animals. Solid-state characteristics of morphology (scanning electron microscopy) crystallinity (X-ray powder diffraction), thermal properties (thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry) and moisture content (Karl Fisher) were evaluated. Particle size distributions, by volume (laser diffraction) for the dispersed powder and by mass (inertial impaction) were determined. Efficient delivery of the powder to a nose only animal exposure chamber employed a novel rotating brush/micro-fan apparatus. Spherical, crystalline particles were prepared. The volume median diameter, ∼1.5μm, was smaller than the mass median aerodynamic diameter, ∼3.0μm, indicating modest aggregation. Drug content variations were observed across the particle size distribution and may be explained by PAE evaporative losses. Delivery to the nose-only exposure chamber indicated that boluses could be administered at approximately 3min intervals to avoid aerosol accumulation and effect uniform dose delivery with successive doses suitable for future pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies.

Abstract
This article focused on a comparative analysis on the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics of berberine (BER) and jateorhizine(JAT) in Coptidis Rhizoma powder (HL-P) and their monomeric compounds (BER + JAT, BJ) in type 2 diabetic (T2D) rats to explore the beneficial. effect of HL-P in the treatment of T2D. The T2D rats were treated with HL-P, BER, JAT and BJ, respectively for 63 d. The pharmacokinetic parameters, dynamic changes in blood glucose level and blood lipid values were measured. The results showed that, compared with other corresponding group, t(max), T(½ka) of BER and JAT in HL-P group were reduced, while C(max), AUC(inf), AUC(last), V(L)/F were significantly increased; compared with model group, blood glucose levels were decreased significantly in HL-P group since the 18th day, while those in BER or BJ group were reduced since the 36th day, however, blood glucose levels showed no obvious changes in JAT group; compared with model group, FFA values in all treatment group were decreased significantly. Moreover, TG, HDL and LDL value in HL-P group, LDL value in BER group and HDL value in BJ group were improved significantly. The above results showed that Coptidis Rhizoma powder showed excellent pharmacokinetic characteristics and excellent activity of lowering blood glucose and lipid. It provided a scientific basis for oral application of Coptidis Rhizoma powder in the treatment of T2D.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Glucagon nasal powder (GNP), a novel intranasal formulation of glucagon being developed to treat insulin-induced severe hypoglycemia, contains synthetic glucagon (10% w/w), beta-cyclodextrin, and dodecylphosphocholine. The safety of this formulation was evaluated in four studies in animal models. METHODS The first study evaluated 28-day sub-chronic toxicology in rats treated intranasally with 1 and 2 mg of GNP/day (0.1 and 0.2 mg glucagon/rat/day). The second study evaluated 28-day sub-chronic toxicology in dogs administered 20 and 40 mg of formulation/dog/day (2 and 4 mg glucagon/dog/day) intranasally. A pulmonary insufflation study assessed acute toxicology following intra-tracheal administration of 0.5 mg of GNP (0.05 mg glucagon) to rats. Local tolerance to 30 mg of GNP (equivalent to 3 mg glucagon, the final dose for humans) was tested through direct administration into the eyes of rabbits. RESULTS There were no test article-related adverse effects on body weight and/or food consumption, ophthalmology, electrocardiography, hematology, coagulation parameters, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, or organ weights, and no macroscopic findings at necropsy in any study. In rats, direct intra-tracheal insufflation at a dose of 0.5 mg of GNP/rat (0.05 mg glucagon/rat) did not result in adverse clinical, macroscopic, or microscopic effects. In dogs, the only adverse findings following sub-chronic use were transient (<30 s) salivation and sneezing immediately post-treatment and mild to moderate reversible histological changes to the nasal mucosa. Daily dosing over 28 days in rats resulted in mild to moderate, unilateral or bilateral erosion/ulceration of the olfactory epithelium, frequently with minimal to mild, acute to sub-acute inflammation of the lamina propria at the dorsal turbinates of the nasal cavity in 2/10 males and 3/10 females in the high-dose group (0.2 mg glucagon/day). These lesions resolved completely over 14 days. Histological examination of tissues from both sub-chronic studies in dogs and rats revealed no microscopic findings. In rabbits, clinical observations noted in the GNP-treated eye and/or surrounding areas included ≥1 of the following: clear discharge, red conjunctiva, partial closure, and swelling of the peri-orbital area, which correlated with erythema and edema noted during ocular observations and grading. DISCUSSION The studies reported here revealed no safety concerns associated with GNP in animal models. Studies published earlier have highlighted the local safety profile of intranasally administered cyclodextrins (a component of GNP). The choline group, the phosphate group, and the saturated 12-carbon aliphatic chain that are present in the dodecylphosphocholine excipient used in GNP are all present in the phospholipids and lecithins seen ubiquitously in mammalian cell membranes and are unlikely to pose safety concerns; this notion is supported by several studies conducted by the authors that revealed no safety concerns. Taken together, these results suggest that intranasal delivery of GNP holds promise as a future rescue medication for use by caregivers to treat insulin-induced hypoglycemic episodes in patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. CONCLUSION This novel drug product is well tolerated in animal models.

Abstract
To provide theoretical and practical basis for the successful formulation design of physically-mixed inhalation dry powder of proteins and peptides, related references were collected, analyzed and summarized. In this review drug micronization technology and commonly used carriers for inhalation dry powder preparation were introduced. For proteins and peptides, supercritical fluid technology and spray-drying are more suitable because of their capabilities of keeping drug activity. Being approved by U. S. Food and Drug Administration, lactose has been extensively used as carriers in many inhalation products. Formulation and process factors influencing drug deposition in the lung, including carrier properties, drug-carrier ratio, blending order, mixing methods, mixing time and the interaction between drug and carrier, were elucidated. The size, shape and surface properties of carries all influence the interaction between drug and carrier. Besides, influence of micromeritic properties of the dry powder, such as particle size, shape, density, flowability, charge, dispersibility and hygroscopicity, on drug deposition in the lung was elaborated. Among these particle size plays the most crucial role in particle deposition in the lung. Moreover, based on the mechanisms of powder dispersity, some strategies to improve drug lung deposition were put forward, such as adding carrier fines, adding adhesive-controlling materials and reprocessing micronized drug. In order to design physically-mixed inhalation dry powder for proteins and peptides with high lung deposition, it is essential to study drug-carriers interactions systematically and illustrate the potential influence of formulation, process parameters and micromeritic properties of the powder.

Abstract
Dry powder inhalers (DPIs) are an important and increasingly investigated method of modern therapy for a growing number of respiratory diseases. DPIs are a promising option for certain patient populations, and may help to overcome several limitations that are associated with other types of inhalation delivery systems (e.g., accuracy and reproducibility of the dose delivered, compliance and adherence issues, or environmental aspects). Today, more than 20 different dry powder inhalers are on the market to deliver active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for local and/or systemic therapy. Depending on the mechanism of deagglomeration, aerosolization, dose metering accuracy, and the interpatient variability, dry powder inhalers demonstrate varying performance levels. During development, manufacturers focus on improving aspects characteristic of their specific DPI devices, depending on the intended type of application and any particular requirements associated with it. With the wide variety of applications related to specific APIs, there exists a range of different devices with distinct features. In addition to the routinely used multi-use DPIs, several single-use disposable devices are under development or already approved. The recent introduction of disposable devices will expand the range of possible applications for use by including agents such as vaccines, analgesics, or even rescue medications. This review article discusses the performance and advantages of recently approved dry powder inhalers as well as disposable single-use inhalers that are currently under development.

Abstract
The impact between particles or agglomerates and a device wall is considered as an important mechanism controlling the dispersion of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) particles in dry powder inhalers (DPIs). In order to characterise the influencing factors and better understand the impact induced dispersion process for carrier-based DPIs, the impact behaviour between an agglomerate and a wall is systematically investigated using the discrete element method. In this study, a carrier-based agglomerate is initially formed and then allowed to impact with a target wall. The effects of impact velocity, impact angle and work of adhesion on the dispersion performance are analysed. It is shown that API particles in the near-wall regions are more likely to be dispersed due to the deceleration of the carrier particle resulted from the impact with the wall. It is also revealed that the dispersion ratio increases with increasing impact velocity and impact angle, indicating that the normal component of the impact velocity plays a dominant role on the dispersion. Furthermore, the impact induced dispersion performance for carrier-based DPI formulations can be well approximated using a cumulative Weibull distribution function that is governed by the ratio of overall impact energy and adhesion energy.

Abstract
Postoperative infection and the presence of osteosynthetic material in human body pose a major problem for patients and operators. Previously, it was considered that osteosynthetic material must be removed, and only then the expected full infection recovery could occur. However, removal of osteosynthetic material in unhealed fractures complicates bone fracture healing, as well as infection recovery. Nowadays, it is indicated to place an external bone fixator and in case of soft tissue recovery access to reosteosynthesis. The negative pressure wound therapy has brought new opportunities for treatment of this type of infections without the need of osteosynthetic material removal. Direct and indirect effects of negative pressure wound therapy create optimal healing conditions. Local use of new materials, transforming powder (Altrazeal) and topical hemoglobin spray (Granulox), provide and improve physiological conditions for appropriate and safe healing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the improvements in wound healing through the use of intravenous prophylactic antibiotics and technical refinements, postoperative elbow infections have become less common but still occur in certain elective elbow surgeries. The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of prophylactic application of vancomycin into the operative site to reduce the incidence of infection after the open release of post-traumatic stiff elbows. METHODS A retrospective review of 272 such patients during a 4-year period was performed. In the control group (93 patients), simple prophylaxis with standard intravenous antibiotics was performed; in the vancomycin group (179 patients), vancomycin powder was applied directly into the wound before closure along with standard intravenous prophylaxis. RESULTS After a follow-up of at least 6 months, the control group was found to have 6 infections (6.45%; confidence interval: 2.40%-13.52%) compared with none (0%; confidence interval: 0-2%.04%) in the vancomycin group, which was a statistically significant difference (P = .0027). No adverse effects were documented from the direct use of the vancomycin powder. CONCLUSIONS The local application of vancomycin powder may be a promising means of preventing postoperative elbow infections after elbow release in patients with post-traumatic elbow stiffness.

Abstract
Fruits and seeds of melinjo (Gnetum gnemon L.) are resveratrol derivative-rich materials. Pharmacokinetics of resveratrol derivatives in healthy volunteers after oral administration of 1000 mg of melinjo seed extract (MSE) powder were assessed and compared with those after oral dosing of trans-resveratrol (tRV) powder containing 4.8 mg of tRV only, equivalent to the content in 1000 mg MSE powder. Plasma tRV concentrations with enzymatic hydrolysis were maintained over 24 h, with a tmax of 12 h and a mean residence time (MRT) of 14 h, 5 and 2 times higher than those for tRV powder intake, respectively. Gnetin C, a resveratrol dimer, with hydrolysis was maintained in plasma for >96 h with a 36 h MRT. With repeated doses once daily for 28 days, plasma tRV and gnetin C concentrations with hydrolysis were in good agreement with the theoretical curves. MSE powder was well tolerated up to the oral dosing of 5000 mg with no serious adverse events.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of Zige lyophilized powder for injection in improving the acute cerebral microcirculation disturbance in rats. METHOD Window craniotomy was performed for rats after the drug administration for 14 days. The experimental microcirculation disturbance model was duplicated with high molecule dextran. After the drug administration, the micro-vein diameters of cerebral pla mater of various groups were observed and recorded under the biological microscope. The blood flow volume was monitored by laser Doppler flow-meter. HCT was measured by the electric resistance method. The hemorheological indexes were detected by the auto-hemorheological instrument. RESULT Zige lyophilized powder for injection (16.40, 32.70, 65.40 mg x kg(-1)) could significantly expand the micro-vein diameter of cerebral pla mater, improve the downward trend of the blood flow volume, and reduce the various hemorheological indexes. CONCLUSION Zige lyophilized powder for injection shows the effect in improving the cerebral microcirculation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND External cephalic version (ECV) is offered to reduce the number of Caesarean delivery indicated by breech presentation which occurs in 3-4% of term pregnancies. ECV is commonly performed aided by the application of aqueous gel or talcum powder to the maternal abdomen. We sought to compare gel with powder during ECV on achieving successful version and increasing tolerability. METHOD We enrolled 95 women (≥ 36 weeks gestation) on their attendance for planned ECV. All participants received terbutaline tocolysis. Regional anaesthesia was not used. ECV was performed in the standard fashion after the application of the allocated aid. If the first round (maximum of 2 attempts) of ECV failed, crossover to the opposing aid was permitted. RESULTS 48 women were randomised to powder and 47 to gel. Self-reported procedure related median [interquartile range] pain scores (using a 10-point visual numerical rating scale VNRS; low score more pain) were 6 [5-9] vs. 8 [7-9] P = 0.03 in favor of gel. ECV was successful in 21/48 (43.8%) vs. 26/47 (55.3%) RR 0.6 95% CI 0.3-1.4 P = 0.3 for powder and gel arms respectively. Crossover to the opposing aid and a second round of ECV was performed in 13/27 (48.1%) following initial failure with powder and 4/21 (19%) after failure with gel (RR 3.9 95% CI 1.0-15 P = 0.07). ECV success rate was 5/13 (38.5%) vs. 1/4 (25%) P = 0.99 after crossover use of gel or powder respectively. Operators reported higher satisfaction score with the use of gel (high score, greater satisfaction) VNRS scores 6 [4.25-8] vs 8 [7-9] P = 0.01. CONCLUSION Women find gel use to be associated with less pain. The ECV success rate is not significantly different. TRIAL REGISTRATION The trial is registered with ISRCTN (identifier ISRCTN87231556).

Abstract
Utilization of curcumin has been limited due to its poor oral bioavailability. Oral bioavailability of hydrophobic compounds might be elevated via encapsulation in artificial seed oil bodies. This study aimed to improve oral bioavailability of curcumin via this encapsulation. Unfortunately, curcumin was indissoluble in various seed oils. A mixed dissolvent formula was used to dissolve curcumin, and the admixture was successfully encapsulated in artificial oil bodies stabilized by recombinant sesame caleosin. The artificial oil bodies of relatively small sizes (150 nm) were stably solidified in the forms of powder and tablet. Oral bioavailability of curcumin with or without encapsulation in artificial oil bodies was assessed in Sprague-Dawley male rats. The results showed that encapsulation of curcumin significantly elevated its bioavailability and provided the highest maximum whole blood concentration (Cmax), 37 ± 28 ng/mL, in the experimental animals 45 ± 17 min (t(max)) after oral administration. Relative bioavailability calculated on the basis of the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) was increased by 47.7 times when curcumin was encapsulated in the artificial oil bodies. This novel formulation of artificial oil bodies seems to possess great potential to encapsulate hydrophobic drugs for oral administration.

Abstract
To date, several strategies have been developed to provide local antibiotic therapy in the treatment of osteomyelitis, such as antibiotic-loaded bone cement, antibiotic-impregnated collagen sponges, polymethylmethacrylate beads, antibiotic-loaded bone graft, antibiotic-loaded synthetic bone substitutes, and antibiotic-coated implants. The optimum carrier for local antibiotic therapy has not been identified. Tibial osteomyelitis using methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus was created in a rat model. Rats were assigned to 3 treatment groups: group A, systemic antibiotics only; group B, systemic antibiotics plus surgical debridement; and group C, systemic antibiotics, surgical debridement, and application of cefazolin. Infection was assessed using gross tissue analysis, radiographs, quantitative bacteriology, and histopathology. One-half of the rat tibias were randomly chosen for histological evaluation and the other half were used for microbiological analysis. Radiographs were reviewed and graded by 4 blinded board-certified radiologists. Histology slides were reviewed and graded by a blinded board-certified pathologist. Gross tissue analysis of treatment groups B and C demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in soft tissue infection clearance compared with group A (P<.05). No difference was found between treatment groups B and C. No significant difference existed in gross tissue, radiographic, microbiologic, or histopathologic analyses among the 3 groups for osteomyelitis. The results of this study demonstrated that the local application of free antibiotic powder is as effective as local debridement alone in treating soft tissue infection associated with tibial osteomyelitis in a rat model.

Abstract
We present a new method for needle-free powdered drug injection via a bench-top gas-powered device. This injector provides an alternative method of vaccine delivery to address the cold chain problem--the cost and risk of transporting temperature sensitive vaccines to developing countries. The device houses interchangeable nozzle inserts to vary orifice geometries and is capable of delivering polymer beads (1-5 µm diameter) into the dermal layer of porcine tissue. Results for injection shape and injection depth versus nozzle orifice diameter demonstrate the device's controllability.

Abstract
To explore the effect of Xiaoer Fuxie Waifu powder on gastrointestinal dynamics. In the study, the charcoal powder propelling test was used to observe the effect Xiaoer Fuxie Waifu powder on the intestinal motility of normal mice and deficient diarrheal mice. The results showed that Xiaoer Fuxie Waifu powder had no obvious inhibitory effect on the powder propelling in normal mice, but a remarkable inhibitory effect on deficient diarrheal mice. Afterwards, diarrhea index was used to observe the effect on deficient diarrheal mice. The results showed a good anti-diarrhea effect in deficient diarrheal mice induced by folium sennae. According to the subsequent isolated intestines smooth muscle test, Xiaoer Fuxie Waifu powder showed a competitive antagonism on muscular tension caused by acetyl choline and barium chloride, as well as a certain synergistic action with atropine. Finally, the method of radio-immunity was used to determine the contents of SP and VIP in small intestine of mice, showing that SP and VIP in small intestine of mice were decreased and the motility of intestine was inhibited. In conclusion, both in vitro and in vivo experiments indicate that Xiaoer Fuxie Waifu powder is a good traditional Chinese gastrointestinal dynamic medicine for external application, with an anti-diarrhea effect on diarrhea mice induced by spleen deficiency and diarrhea.

Abstract
We reported three patients with an abnormal elevation of serum CA72-4 levels when taking GLSP, which is commonly used as a dietary supplement for cancer patients across the globe. Furthermore, the results were not due to the apparent analytical interference. In case 1 and case 2, excessive examinations were carried out because of a lack of timely communication with patients when the abnormal elevation of CA724 was found. In contrast, the lesson from these two cases made us communicate with the patient in a timely manner in Case 3, avoiding unnecessary examinations when the same situation happened. Therefore, it is necessary to communicate with patients in a timely manner once an abnormal elevation of serum CA72-4 is found.

Abstract
The antidiabetic activities of bitter melon powders produced with lyophilization/superfine grinding and hot air drying/normal grinding were investigated in vivo for selecting a suitable bitter melon processing procedure. After a five-week treatment, bitter melon lyophilized superfine grinding powder (BLSP) had a higher antidiabetic activity with reducing fasting blood glucose levels from 21.40 to 12.54 mmol/L, the serum insulin levels from 40.93 to 30.74 mIU/L, and restoring activities of SOD compared with those in the bitter melon hot air drying powder (BAP) treated group. Furthermore, BLSP protected pancreatic tissues including islet beta cells and reduced the loss of islet cells. Combined with the difference of compositions in BLSP and BAP, it could be concluded that superfine grinding and lyophilization processes were beneficial for presenting the antidiabetic activity, which will provide a reference for direct utilization of bitter melon as a suitable functional food to relieve symptoms of diabetes.

Abstract
Galenic science is interested in the art and the way of formulating an active principle with an excipient in order for it to be administered to the patient. The pharmaceutical forms envisage different administration routes, including by mouth. Nurses need to handle and sometimes modify the pharmaceutical form of a drug to make it easier for the patient to take. This requires vigilance.

Abstract
There is a current biodefense interest in protection against anthrax. Here, we developed a new generation of stable and effective anthrax vaccine. We studied the immune response elicited by recombinant protective antigen (rPA) delivered intranasally with a novel mucosal adjuvant, a mast cell activator compound 48/80 (C48/80). The vaccine formulation was prepared in a powder form by spray-freeze-drying (SFD) under optimized conditions to produce particles with a target size of D(50) = 25 μm, suitable for delivery to the rabbit nasal cavity. Physicochemical properties of the powder vaccines were characterized to assess their delivery and storage potential. Structural stability of rPA was confirmed by circular dichroism and attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, whereas functional stability of rPA and C48/80 was monitored by cell-based assays. Animal study was performed using a unit-dose powder device for direct nasal application. Results showed that C48/80 provided effective mucosal adjuvant activity in rabbits. Freshly prepared SFD powder vaccine formulations or powders stored for over 2 years at room temperature elicited significantly elevated serum PA-specific and lethal toxin neutralization antibody titers that were comparable to that induced by intramuscular immunization with rPA. Nasal delivery of this vaccine formulation may be a viable alternative to the currently licensed vaccine or an attractive vaccine platform for other mucosally transmitted diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A nasally applied cellulose powder is increasingly used in many countries as a remedy for allergic rhinitis. The absence of side effects makes the treatment particularly attractive in children. The efficacy in pollen allergic children, however, is not studied, nor is the relation to various pollen exposures. METHODS During the birch pollen season in 2009, a double blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted in 53 subjects, aged 8-18 yr, with allergic rhinitis attributed to birch pollen. All children were on daily oral antihistamine. Reminders and reporting of symptom scores were made by SMS on mobile phones. Pollen was collected in a volumetric trap from which figures of pollen concentrations from 1979 to 2009 were available. RESULTS There was a significant reduction in total symptom scores from the nose (Placebo 7.29, Active 6.07, p = 0.033) and specifically for running nose (Placebo 2.56, Active 2.03, p = 0.017). All symptoms from the nose, eyes and lower airways were lower in the active group but reached significance only as earlier. The best effect was seen after days with low or moderate pollen counts (≤100/m(3)), the predominating pollen load over 31 yr in the area. No clinically significant adverse effects were seen. CONCLUSIONS The product reduces symptoms of SAR in children and adolescents. Original data on pollen concentrations over 31 yr are presented with levels mainly in the low range favouring the observed efficacy profile. SMS communication on mobile phone for reminders and recording symptom scores was an excellent logistics tool.
