Abstract
Thinlip mullet Chelon ramada is the most abundant mullet species found in the Comacchio lagoons (northern Adriatic Sea, Italy). Histological and ultrastructural sections of the intestine of C. ramada showed that over 83% of 48 mullets were infected with the intestinal parasite Myxobolus mugchelo (Myxozoa). In histological sections, plasmodia of M. mugchelo containing mature spores were situated closer to mucosal folds and were surrounded by numerous mast cells (MCs). Mature spores, generally oval in shape, were observed in the paracellular space among the enterocytes or within them. Near the infected epithelial cells, several MCs, rodlet cells and few neutrophils occurred. In intestinal epithelium, large cells resembling macrophages, some with spores of M. mugchelo inside, were observed. These macrophage-like cells were foamy and possessed elongate striated granules. The number of MCs and macrophages in the intestinal epithelium was significantly higher in parasitized fish. In some parasitized intestines, portions of epithelium were displaced by spores, or the spores were observed inside the damaged enterocytes. Immunohistochemical analysis of C. ramada infected or uninfected intestinal tissue revealed the presence of histamine, serotonin (5-HT), leu-enkephalin and inducible-nitric oxide synthase in epithelial macrophages. Several epithelial cells positive to proliferating cell-nuclear antigen were also observed in the proximity of the macrophages. The current study is the first to record the occurrence of intraepithelial macrophages which engulf myxozoan spores. A hypothesis on migration of spores from pancreas via intestinal wall to gut lumen is presented.

Abstract
Extracellular vesicles (EV) are important mediators of intercellular communication because they transfer microRNA (miRNA) that are able to repress translation of mRNA. Their presence in seminal plasma suggests a role in sperm fertility. It is known that bull seminal plasma contains fertility-associated proteins that are predictive of high and low fertility (Killian et al. 1993 Biol. Reprod. 49, 1202-1207). In addition, a difference in miRNA content between high and low spermatozoa motility has been observed in bulls, highlighting a potential role of EV on fertility (Capra et al. 2017 BMC Genom. 18, 14). We hypothesised that co-incubation of sperm of low-fertility bulls with EV isolated from the seminal plasma of high-fertility bulls could improve their fertility. Before testing this hypothesis, a preliminary study was carried out to investigate the presence and type of EV in bovine seminal plasma and their interaction with spermatozoa. Ejaculates of eight Holstein bulls collected weekly by artificial vagina were centrifuged at 1600×g for 10min to pellet spermatozoa and then centrifuged again at 2400×g for 30min to eliminate cell debris and large vesicles. After centrifugation, supernatants were collected and filtered twice (0.45 and 0.22µm) and stored at −80°C. A double ultracentrifugation at 100 000×g for 1h was performed, and pellets resuspended in a small volume of Tris buffer were kept at −80°C until used. Three ejaculates of the same bull were pooled to detect the concentration and size of EV by Nanosight Instruments. To trace the interaction with spermatozoa by fluorescence microscopy, EV were labeled with PKH26 dye and a dose-response curve in three replicates was performed. A suspension of 1×106 spermmL−1 was co-incubated with 200 or 400×106 EV labelled with pKH26 for 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180min at 38.5°C. The end point of incubation was at 24h. Internalisation of EV was assessed using confocal microscopy. Our results showed that the size of EV ranged from 145.1 to 187.7nm, with an average of 166±29nm. For all seminal plasma samples, the number of EV ranged from 3.62 to 6.08×1013 particlesmL−1, with an average of 4.37±0.61×1013. Based on size, these EV can be categorised as shedding vesicles. Confocal microscopy was set to take fluorescent images at different planes scanned every 0.12µm from top to bottom of the spermatozoa. Our results showed that no fluorescence signal was detectable after co-incubation with 200×106 EV. At the concentration of 400×106 EV, up to 60min no signal was detectable, whereas at 90min spermatozoa showed a fine granular fluorescent pattern within the intermediate portion. At 120min, the signal was within the acrosome, and at 180min the spermatozoa were stained for the whole length, supposing a distribution of incorporated EV throughout all the cell. At 24h, the fluorescence signal decreased. In conclusion, this is the first study to demonstrate that bull spermatozoa incorporate EV from bull semen. We hypothesise that a transfer of molecules, such as miRNA and other noncoding RNA molecules, from EV to spermatozoa is probably involved in sperm fertility.

Abstract
In the present paper a new concept of representability is introduced, which can be applied to not total and also to intransitive relations (semiorders in particular). This idea tries to represent the orderings in the simplest manner, avoiding any unnecessary information. For this purpose, the new concept of representability is developed by means of partial functions, so that other common definitions of representability (i.e. (Richter-Peleg) multi-utility, Scott-Suppes representability, … ) are now particular cases in which the partial functions are actually functions. The paper also presents a collection of examples and propositions showing the advantages of this kind of representations, particularly in the case of partial orders and semiorders, as well as some results showing the connections between distinct kinds of representations.

Abstract
This investigation aims to fill gaps in our understanding of the intestinal immune cells of elasmobranchs. Whole digestive tracts of fifteen thornback ray Raja clavata were provided by a trawl fleet from the Gulf of Asinara (Sardinia, western Mediterranean Sea). Histochemical, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural observations were conducted on the spiral intestine. Three types of granular cells were identified; type I in epithelium, types II and III in lamina propria-submucosa, with each of them containing cytoplasmic granules with different ultrastructural characteristics. Data on size and density of each granular cell type are provided. Immunostaining of intestinal sections showed the reactivity of the granular cells: type I cells were positive for lysozyme, mast cell tryptase and tumor necrosis factor-ɑ based on antibody staining; type III cells were immune-reactive to anti-interleukin 6 antibody, whilst type II cells were negative to all the antibodies used. Comparison of each granular cell type with immune cells of teleosts or mammals and an hypothesis on their nature and function are reported. A potential role for granular cells in intestinal cellular immunity is also discussed with respect to type I and type III cells having similarities to Paneth cells and neutrophils, respectively.

Abstract
Rodlet cells (RC) are characterized by a distinctive cell cortex and conspicuous inclusions named "rodlets." These cells are particularly abundant and large in size in intestine of eels. Histochemical, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural investigations were carried out on European eel Anguilla anguilla and Common carp Cyprinus carpio from Northern Italy. Eight biotinylated lectins were used to probe for specific carbohydrate residues in deparaffinized, hydrated intestinal sections of eel and carp. Five antibodies were tested on intestinal sections of both fish species: inducible nitric oxide synthase (i-NOS), leu-enkephalin, lysozyme, serotonin and tumour necrosis factor-α. Lectin histochemistry revealed rodlet cells (RCs) of the eel intestine to react with two of the eight lectins tested, specifically Concanavalin A (ConA) and Sambucus Nigra Agglutinin (SNA). This contrasted to lectin staining of RCs in the intestine of common carp, where four of the eight lectins showed a positive reaction; Dolichos Biflorus Agglutinin (DBA), Wheat Germ Agglutinin (WGA), SNA and ConA. RCs in eel and carp intestine were immunoreactive with antibodies to lysozyme and i-NOS. The occurrence of the inflammatory peptides lysozyme and i-NOS in RCs of the eel and common carp poses in favour that these cells are involved in the mechanism of defence against pathogens.

Abstract
Histopathological, immunofluorescence and ultrastructural studies were conducted on the intestines of four fish species infected with different taxa of enteric helminths. Brown trout (Salmo trutta trutta), eel (Anguilla anguilla) and tench (Tinca tinca) obtained from Lake Piediluco (central Italy) were examined. Brown trout and eel were infected with two species of acanthocephalans, and tench was parasitized with a tapeworm species. In addition to the above site, specimens of chub (Squalius cephalus) and brown trout infected with an acanthocephalan were examined from the River Brenta (north Italy). Moreover, eels were examined from a brackish water, Comacchio lagoons (north Italy), where one digenean species was the predominant enteric worm. All the helminths species induced a similar response, the hyperplasia of the intestinal mucous cells, particularly of those secreting acid mucins. Local endocrine signals seemed to affect the production and secretion of mucus in the parasitized fish, as worms often were surrounded by an adherent mucus layer or blanket. This is the first quantitative report of enteric worm effects on the density of various mucous cell types and on the mucus composition in intestine of infected/uninfected conspecifics. We provide a global comparison between the several fish-helminth systems examined.

Abstract
Immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence and ultrastructural studies were conducted on a sub-population of 20 wels catfish Silurus glanis from a tributary of the River Po (Northern Italy). Fish were examined for the presence of ecto- and endo-parasites; in the intestine of 5 fish, 11 specimens of cestode Glanitaenia osculata were noted and was the only helminth species encountered. The architecture of intestine and its cellular features were nearly identical in either the uninfected S. glanis or in those harboring G. osculata. Near the site of worm's attachment, mucous cells, several mast cells (MCs), few neutrophils and some endocrine cells (ECs) were found to co-occur within the intestinal epithelium. MCs and neutrophils were abundant also in the submucosa. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that enteric ECs were immunoreactive to met-enkephalin, galanin and serotonin anti-bodies. The numbers of ECs, mucous cells and MCs were significantly higher in infected wels catfish (Mann-Whitney U test, p < 0.05). Dual immunofluorescence staining with the biotinylated lectin Sambucus nigra Agglutinin and the rabbit polyclonal anti-met-enkephalin or anti-serotonin, with parallel transmission electron microscopy, showed that ECs often made intimate contact with the mucous cells and epithelial MCs. The presence of numerous MCs in intestinal epithelium shows S. glanis to be an interesting model fish to study processes underlying intestinal inflammation elicited by an enteric worm. Immune cells, ECs and mucous cells of the intestinal epithelium have been described at the ultrastructural level and their possible functions and interactions together will be discussed.

Abstract
The European eel, Anguilla anguilla, is a major warm-water fish species cultured in North and South Europe. Seventy-one A. anguilla collected between 2010 and 2015 from the Comacchio lagoons were examined. Fish were infected and damaged by larvae (L3) of the nematode Contracaecum rudolphii A, which were encapsulated within the thickness of the intestinal wall and within the external visceral peritoneum (serosa). Conspicuous granulomas, visible at sites of infection, were arranged in a trilayer, formed by a series of concentric whorls. The cells involved in the immune response and their distribution in the granuloma layers were assessed by immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence, and ultrastructural techniques. The outer part of the granuloma contained macrophages, macrophage aggregates, and mast cells (MCs) scattered among fibroblasts. This layer was vascularized, with degranulation of MCs occurring in close proximity to the capillaries. The middle layer was rich in MCs and fibroblasts. The inner layer, closest to the parasite larva, consisted mainly of dark epithelioid cells, some of which were necrotic. Non-necrotic epithelioid cells formed desmosomes between themselves or with fibroblasts. Within the granulomas, numerous cells of different types were positive to proliferative cell nuclear antigen antibody, indicating a high degree of cellular proliferation around the larvae.

The expression of six different aquaporins (AQP1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 9), integral membrane water channels that facilitate bi-directional passive movement of water, was investigated by immunohistochemistry in the uterine tube of pre-pubertal and adult Saanen goats (Capra hircus), comparing the different phases of the oestrous cycle. Regional morphology and secretory processes were markedly different during the goat oestrous cycle. The tested AQP molecules showed different expression patterns in comparison with already studied species. AQP1-immunoreactivity was evidenced at the endothelium of blood vessels and in nerve fibres, regardless of the tubal tract and cycle period. AQP4-immunoreactivity was shown on the lateral plasmalemma in the basal third of the epithelial cells at infundibulum and ampulla level in the cycling goats, more evidently during follicular than during luteal phase. No AQP4-immunoreactivity was noticed at the level of the isthmus region, regardless of the cycle phase. AQP5-immunoreactivity, localized at the apical surface of epithelial cells, increased from pre-puberty to adulthood. Thereafter, AQP5-immunoreactivity was prominent during the follicular phase, when it strongly decorated the apical plasmalemma of all epithelial cells at ampullary level. During luteal phase, immunoreactivity was discontinuous, being weak to strong at the apex of the secretory cells protruding into the lumen. In the isthmus region, the strongest AQP5-immunoreactivity was seen during follicular phase, with a clear localization in the apical plasmalemma of all the epithelial cells and also on the lateral plasmalemma. AQP2, 3 and 9 were undetectable all along the goat uterine tube. Likely, a collaboration of different AQP molecules sustains the fluid production in the goat uterine tube. AQP1-mediated transudation from the blood capillaries, together with permeation of the epithelium by AQP4 in the basal rim of the epithelial cells and final intervening of apical AQP5, could be involved in fluid production as well as in secretory processes.

Abstract
Most individual fish in farmed and wild populations are infected with parasites. Upon dissection of fish, helminths from gut are often easily visible. Enteric helminths include several species of digeneans, cestodes, acanthocephalans and nematodes. Some insights into biology, morphology and histopathological effects of the main fish enteric helminths taxa will be described here. The immune system of fish, as that of other vertebrates, can be subdivided into specific and aspecific types, which in vivo act in concert with each other and indeed are interdependent in many ways. Beyond the small number of well-described models that exist, research focusing on innate immunity in fish against parasitic infections is lacking. Enteric helminths frequently cause inflammation of the digestive tract, resulting in a series of chemical and morphological changes in the affected tissues and inducing leukocyte migration to the site of infection. This review provides an overview on the aspecific defence mechanisms of fish intestine against helminths. Emphasis will be placed on the immune cellular response involving mast cells, neutrophils, macrophages, rodlet cells and mucous cells against enteric helminths. Given the relative importance of innate immunity in fish, and the magnitude of economic loss in aquaculture as a consequence of disease, this area deserves considerable attention and support.

Abstract
In this paper, we go further on the problem of the continuous numerical representability of interval orders defined on topological spaces. A new condition of compatibility between the given topology and the indifference associated to the main trace of an interval order is introduced. Provided that this condition is fulfilled, a semiorder has a continuous interval order representation through a pair of continuous real-valued functions. Other necessary and sufficient conditions for the continuous representability of interval orders are also discussed, and, in particular, a characterization is achieved for the particular case of interval orders defined on a topological space of finite support.

Abstract
The ability to recognize specific events happening in the ovaries during periovulatory time allows optimal management of canine reproduction. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of vaginal cytology and blood progesterone (P4) assay to identify accurately the changes occurring at the ovarian structures, mainly during the fertile period. Tertiary follicles, corpora hemorrhagica (CHs) and corpora lutea (CLs) from forty healthy bitches undergoing ovariohysterectomy were evaluated by histo-morphometry based on their aspect, number and size. The tertiary follicles distribution (small, medium and large) was statistically different (P<0.002) among all the stages of the reproductive cycle, except for small follicles (<2mm), which were always observed from proestrus to anestrus. Very large follicles (>4mm) were predominant (P=0.008) around ovulation when P4 mean level was 6.1±1.7ng/mL. The early postovulatory estrous period was characterized by CHs (P<0.002) and P4 level of 16.7±5.9ng/mL. The end of the fertile period - start of diestrus - coincided with the development of CLs (P=0.001) associated with a P4 mean level of 73.9±9.9ng/mL. The small (P<0.001) and medium (P<0.05) follicle diameters were positively correlated with the bitch size. The number of follicles larger than 4mm was significantly lower in bitches younger than 4 years (P<0.02). This study provides insight into some critical steps in the canine reproductive processes in the periovulatory phase and the end of the fertile period, essential to plan breeding programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The enteric nervous system (ENS) contains chemically coded populations of neurons that serve specific functions for the control of the gastrointestinal tract. The ability of neurons to modify their chemical code in response to luminal changes has recently been discovered. It is possible that enteric neuronal plasticity may sustain the adaptability of the gut to changes in intestinal activity or injury, and that gut neurons may respond to an altered intestinal environment by changing their neuropeptide expression. METHODS We used immunohistochemical methods to investigate the presence and localization of several neuronal populations and enteric glia in both the small (ileum) and large (cecum) intestine of piglets. We assessed their abundance in submucosal and myenteric plexus from animals treated with the probiotic Pediococcus acidilactici compared with untreated controls. KEY RESULTS The treated piglets had a larger number of galanin- and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-immunoreactive neurons than controls, but this was limited to the submucosal plexus ganglia of the ileum. Moreover, immunohistochemistry revealed that glial fibrillary acidic protein-positive enteric glial cells were significantly higher in the inner and outer submucosal plexuses of treated animals. CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES The neuronal and glial changes described here illustrate plasticity of the ENS in response to an altered luminal environment in the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract
Insulin-like 3 (INSL3) plays a prominent role in male development and is supposed to induce the growth of the gubernaculum testis (g.t.), thus being directly involved in testicular descent in humans and rodents. This happens through activation of the RXFP2 receptor (GREAT or LGR8). The INSL3–RXFP2 complex is reputed to play an additional paracrine role in the testis, possibly acting as part of an autocrine feedback loop. The present work provides evidence of the immunolocalisation of INSL3 in the Leydig cells of canine fetuses and of the expression of RXFP2 receptor in different tissues of the g.t. of the same specimens. RXFP2 was localised at the cell membrane of g.t. muscle and connective cells, as well as in the epithelial cells of the developing excurrent ducts. Notably, RXFP2 immunoreactivity of the g.t. was limited to fetuses at ~35–45 days of gestation, which is also the fetal period when the endocrine compartment of the dog testis is active endocrinologically, as confirmed by the anti-P450c17 and anti-INSL3 immunoreactivities of the fetal Leydig cells, and by anti-Müllerian hormone immunoreactivity of the Sertoli cells. The same immunoreactivities were also evaluated in the testes of cryptorchid dogs of different ages. RXFP2 immunoreactivity was absent from genital tracts of cryptorchid testes and g.t. remnants.

Abstract
Weaning piglets were fed an L-glutamine-supplemented diet with the aim of monitoring the effects on gut mucosal turnover and barrier function, to elucidate the potential preventive or therapeutic roles of glutamine as a nutraceutical or 'functional food'. Sixteen female weaning piglets were divided into two groups, which were fed a control diet (Ctr group: n = 8) or a Ctr + 0.5% L-glutamine diet (G group: n = 8) for 28 days. In the ileum of group G piglets the villus height (V) and crypt depth (C) were increased, and the V:C ratio was decreased (p < 0.01). The PCNA and TUNEL immunoreactivities were also tested. The number of mitotic mucosal cells (M) was increased, and that of mucosal cells with apoptotic nuclei (A) decreased in such a way that the A:M index diminished (p < 0.01). The A:M index also decreased at the level of some components of the gut-associated lymphatic tissue (GALT), thus indicating a positive effect on the gut barrier function. This trial showed that L: -glutamine supplementation influenced some morphofunctional characteristics of piglet ileal mucosa. These data corroborate the nutraceutical role of glutamine as a trophic agent for mucosal repair, improvement of barrier function and gut adaptation in the swine per se and as an animal model.

Abstract
Immunohistochemical studies were performed on male and female bladder and urethra collected from 4 adults dogs and 10 foetal specimens with crown-rump length from 53 to 155 mm (medium-sized breeds, presumptive 38 days of gestation to term). A panel of antisera was tested, including PGP 9.5 to describe the general intramural innervation, ChAT and TH to depict the cholinergic and nor-adrenergic components and NOS1, CGRP, SP, NPY, VIP, SOM, GAL, 5-HT to investigate the possible nitrergic, peptidergic and aminergic ones. A rich cholinergic innervation was present in adult bladder and urethra, along with a lesser number of adrenergic nerves and a small number of nitrergic ones. Either bladder or urethra received numerous CGRP-, SP-, NPY-, VIP-containing nerve fibres which were distributed throughout the muscle layers. All over the lower urinary tract strong to weak ChAT-, CGRP-, SP- and NPY-immunoreactivity was detected in intramural ganglia, in peripheral nerve bundles and around blood vessels. 5-HT-immunoreactive endocrine cells were present in the urethral epithelium. Early foetal organs were supplied only by cholinergic nerve fibres. Few NOS-, CGRP- and SP-ergic components appeared at the end of pregnancy. It can be guessed that sensory mediators such as CGRP and SP increase in postnatal ages while other neuropeptides, such as NPY and VIP, appear only after birth, as the urinary reflex consolidates.

Abstract
The ovaries and uterus were collected after ovariohysterectomy from a 16-month-old Labrador bitch in diestrus that never mated. Discrete swellings were found in the uterine horns, with the macroscopic appearance of normal early pregnancy. At histologic examination, the endometrium, devoid of any conceptus and chorion, showed a marked proliferation, on the basis of which a diagnosis of deciduoma was made. A remarkable population of stromal eosinophilic granular lymphocytes was present, especially in the axis of the endometrial folds. Periodic acid-Schiff and Dolichos biflorus-lectin histochemical reaction and a panel of 10 immunohistochemical markers were used to characterize eosinophilic granular cells. Our findings allowed us to compare these granular cells with the granulated decidual cells, whose presence was until now described only in primates, rodents, or a few other epitheliochorial species. On the basis of our results, the importance of eosinophilic granular cells in a decidualization process is hypothesized to occur also in the bitch.

Abstract
The galaninergic enteric nervous system of three flatfishes was studied using immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence methods. Galanin-like immunoreactivity was mainly detected within the enteric intramural neurons of the stomachs and the proximal intestines. The sole, Solea solea L. and the flounder, Platichthys flesus L. showed a similar occurrence and relative distribution of galaninergic intramural neurons. Rare nervous fibre immunoreactive to the anti-galanin serum were observed in the muscular layers of the oesophagus of the turbot, Psetta maxima L. The presence and relative abundance of galanin-like immunoreactive neurons in the remaining organs of the alimentary canal of the turbot showed a different pattern in comparison to those observed in the sole and the flounder. A galanin-like peptide was detected in nerve fibres running through the exocrine parenchyma of the pancreas of all three species. It is conceivable that the galaninergic system in these species plays a role in regulating gut muscle activity, and in controlling pancreatic secretion. Galanin and choline acetyltransferase were co-localized within the same neurons of the stomach and intestine. The result confirms the hypothesis that galanin in the gut of fish functions as a cholinergic modulator. Differently from other fish species, immunoreactive endocrine cells were not detected in the studied pleuronectiformes.

Abstract
In recent years a new parasite, causing severe losses, has been detected in farmed turbot, Scophthalmus maximus (L.), in Northwestern Spain. Dead fish showed emaciation and cachexia caused by severe necrotizing enteritis, which affected all areas of the digestive tract. The parasite was classified as a myxosporean and named Enteromyxum scophthalmi. This study was designed to assess the response of the turbot neuroendocrine system against E. scophthalmi infection. Immunohistochemical tests were applied to sections of the gastrointestinal tract of uninfected and E. scophthalmi-infected turbot, and the presence of cholecystokinin (CCK-8), serotonin (5-HT), substance P (SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) were documented. A higher abundance of both endocrine epithelial cells (ECs) and nerve cell bodies and fibres for CCK-8, 5-HT and SP were recorded in the gastrointestinal tract of infected turbot, whereas VIP-like substance decreased. The results indicate that E. scophthalmi infection in turbot induced changes in the neuroendocrine system, which may cause alterations in gut motility, electrolyte and fluid secretion, and vascular and immune functions.

Abstract
The correct functional development of the gastrointestinal tract is of special importance during the neonatal and weaning phases of reared piglets. Nutrition is obviously a critical determinant in the growth of the gut in the young swine. The mucosal epithelium of the small intestine is reputed anatomically and functionally immature in neonatal pigs, a feature that appears to be exacerbated at weaning, when a colonization of the gut occurs by "new" microorganisms entering the alimentary canal with the solid feed. This frequently exposes piglets to diarrhoeic syndromes and other intestinal disturbances. Functional feed additives, also called nutraceuticals, appear as promising alternative substances to the use of chemotherapeutics as growth promoters in the rearing farm, above all considering the near banning of them by the European Parliament in the view of reducing antibiotic resistance phenomena in human therapies. Several feed additives are available that may play a role in the pig nutritional plan because of their trophic and cyto-protective effects on the gastrointestinal apparatus. Paying special attention to the quantitative consequences (histometry) upon the gut of the examined dietary supplements, this review, even if not fully exhaustive, will focus on the function (and possibly the mechanism/s of action) of certain gut-trophic nutrient substrates. This in turn will sustain the potential use of these substances in human therapy, especially the one directed at resolving intestinal diseases, both in adult and infant ages. In nutritional studies as well as in other biomedical research fields, the swine is an excellent animal model.

Abstract
A histopathological and immunohistochemical study on the intestines of 45 specimens of farmed rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), from Loch Awe, Scotland, revealed a number of cellular deviations in individuals naturally infected with the pseudophyllidean cestode Eubothrium crassum (Bloch, 1779). Twenty-five individuals (55.5%) were infected with an average worm burden of 18.84 +/- 4.06 (mean +/- SE) cestodes per host (range, 2-80 worms; total 471 worms). The cestodes, measuring an average 8.23 +/- 1.10 cm (mean +/- SE; range, 5.3-13.0 cm) in length, were found attached by their scolices to the mucosal lining of the distal portion of the pyloric caeca. Within the caeca, the strobila evoked a mild catarrhal enteritis, namely an enhanced mucus production with epithelial cellular desquamation, a leucocytic infiltration of the lamina propria-submucosa and vacuolization of the intestinal epithelial cells. Eosinophilic granular cells of the stratum granulosum exhibited granular depletion, while within the catarrh, the presence of a high number of rodlet cells was noticed. Immunohistochemically, the occurrence of E. crassum caused a significant reduction in the number of bombesin-, gastrin-releasing peptide and glucagon-like immunoreactive endocrine cells, but an increase in the relative densities of endocrine cells containing cholecystokinin-8- and gastrin-like substances. There were, however, no significant differences in the number of endocrine cells that were immunoreactive to secretin, neuropeptide Y and peptide histidine-isoleucine antisera in the digestive tracts of either the infected or non-infected O. mykiss.

Abstract
Mucus secreted onto the surface of the intestine forms a physical barrier to invading parasites so that a possible attachment of helminths to the surface is prevented and their expulsion by peristalsis facilitated. In mammals, intestinal parasites induce hyperplasia and hypertrophy of intestine goblet cells and provoke changes in the mucus composition. In fish, this topic has received less attention. In the present investigation, histochemical methods were employed to compose intestinal mucous cell numbers and their glycoconjugate composition were compared by uninfected brown trout Salmo trutta and in S. trutta parasitized with Cyathocephalus truncatus or Pomphorhynchus laevis. When P. laevis was present in the intestine of the brown trout, the total mucous cell number, and the number of mucous cells containing acid or mixed glycoconjugates were significantly enhanced. No significant change in the total mucous cell number was detected in the intestine of fish parasitized with C. truncatus in comparison with uninfected brown trout. A significant increase was observed in the number of both acid (especially sulphated) and mixed glycoconjugates containing mucous cells as well as a significant decrease in the number of neutral glycoconjugates containing mucous cells. When intestinal helminths were present, the thickness of the adherent mucous gel increased. In a limited number of other fish species, the occurrence of gill and intestinal parasites has been reported to increase the mucosal glycoconjugate secretions. Our study is the first quantitative report on the effects of intestinal helminths on the density of mucous cells and mucus composition in a fish species.

Abstract
Immunohistochemical tests were applied to sections of intestine of uninfected and Pomphorhynchus laevis Muller-infected chub, Leuciscus cephalus (L.) using 15 different antisera. Nerve cell bodies and fibres immunoreactive (IR) to the anti-bombesin, -Cholecystokinin-8 (CCK-8), -galanin, -Gastrin-Releasing Peptide (-GRP), -Nitric Oxide Synthase (-NOS), -Substance P (-SP), and -Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (-VIP) sera were observed in the myenteric plexus of uninfected chub. The density of nerve components immunoreactive to these antisera was high in the intestine of the infected fish, especially near the site of attachment. Moreover, numerous nerve fibres, immunoreactive to anti-bombesin, -GRP, -galanin, -SP, and -VIP sera, were encountered in the connective tissue capsule surrounding the bulb and proboscis of P. laevis. The occurrence of P. laevis in the chub gut significantly increased the number of endocrine cells per intestinal fold immunoreactive to galanin, met-enkephalin and leu-enkephalin antisera. CCK-8, Neuropeptide Y and glucagon-like immunoreactive cells were less numerous in the intestine of infected chub. A large number of cells in the tunica propria-submucosa of L. cephalus infected with P. laevis were immunoreactive to anti-serotonin and -leu-enkephalin sera.

Abstract
Specimens of testis, excurrent duct including the male accessory glands and urethra, were studied in boars, bulls, horses and donkeys, in order to localize endocrine/paracrine cells. Silver impregnation methods were used to test the argentaffinity and/or argyrophilia of cells. Immunoreactivities to chromogranin A, 5-hydroxytryptamine, somatostatin, [met]- and [leu]- enkephalins, gastrin-releasing peptide, calcitonin gene-related peptide, neuropeptide Y, substance P, vasoactive intestinal peptide, beta-endorphin antisera were tested by a streptavidin-biotin method. In the testis, epididymis, ductus deferens and vesicular gland no endocrine cells were found in any of the animals studied. Chromogranin-A, serotonin, somatostatin and enkephalins were present in endocrine/paracrine cells in the surface or glandular epithelia, whereas all other antisera gave negative results. In the prostatic complex and the urethral epithelium, the most consistent number of endocrine cells was serotonin-immunoreactive. Few cells were also argentaffin and a very limited number of them showed argyrophily and chromogranin-A immunoreactivity. Somatostatin-and enkephalin-immunoreactive cells were rare in the bull and boar, absent in stallions. This comparative study carried out on different species of domestic ungulates has shown deeply different immunophenotypes, even comparing species that are in a very close zoological relationship with one another, such as the horse and the donkey.

Abstract
The small and large intestine of adult horses were histochemically and immunohistochemically investigated in order to evidence components of the intramural nervous system. The general structural organization of the intramural nervous system was examined by using Nissl-thionin staining as well as the anti-neurofilament 200 (NF200) immunoreaction, which demonstrated the presence of neurons in the submucous as well as myenteric plexuses. The additional presence of subserosal ganglia was shown in the large intestine. Acetylcholinesterase (AChEase) activity was observed in both the submucous and myenteric plexuses. Localization of acetylcholine-utilizing neurons was also evidenced by immunohistochemical reactions for choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) and vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT). With both histochemistry and immunohistochemistry possible cholinergic nerve fibres were detected in the inner musculature. The two possible cholinergic co-mediators Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide (CGRP) and Substance P (SP) have been investigated by an immunohistochemical approach. CGRP immunoreactivity was detected in roundish nerve cell bodies as well as in nerve fibres of the submucous plexus, whereas SP immunoreactivity was evidenced in nerve fibres of the tunica mucosa, in nerve cell bodies and fibres of the submucous plexus and in nerve fibres of the myenteric plexus. NADPH-diaphorase reactivity, which is linked to the synthesis and release of nitric oxide, was detected in nerve cell bodies and nerve fibres of both the submucous and myenteric plexuses as well as in a subserosal localization of the large intestine. The nitrergic components were confirmed by the anti-NOS (nitric oxide synthase) immunoreaction. Results are compared with those of other mammals and related to the complex intestinal horse physiology and pathophysiology.

Abstract
Galanin is a brain-gut neuropeptide present in the central and peripheral nervous systems of vertebrates. In the present survey, the galaninergic and the diffuse endocrine systems of the alimentary canal of the river lamprey, Lampetra fluviatilis, and the white sturgeon, Acipenser transmontanus, were studied by immunohistochemistry. The results show the presence of galanin-like immunoreactive endocrine cells in the gut of L. fluviatilis. In addition, a galanin-like immunoreactivity was detected in enteric intramural neurons of both species. It is conceivable that the galaninergic system plays in both species a role in the regulation of the gut muscle contractility and in the modulation of mucosal secretive/absorptive processes. In A. transmontanus, the presence of galanin-like immunoreactive nerve fibres associated with components of the gut associated-lymphoid tissue is possibly correlated with a control of the defensive events at this site. The presence of a galanin-like immunoreactivity in the neuroendocrine system of these two ancient fishes confirms the hypothesis on the early occurrence of this regulative molecule in the gastro-enteric system of vertebrates.

Abstract
Immunohistochemical and histopathological studies were conducted on a population of 3-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus (L.) from Loch Airthrey (Stirling, Scotland) naturally infected with the microsporean Glugea anomala (Moniez 1887). Of the 55 host specimens that were examined, 16 (29.09%) were infected, the intensity of infection ranging from 1 to 4 xenomas per fish, which were principally located within the central portion of the body lateral flank musculature. All 32 G. anomala xenomas examined were mature, their diameter ranging from 936 to 2232 Pum, and their walls of presented a laminar structure. Subcutaneously situated xenomas protruded from the fish body surface, whilst xenomas encountered within the intestine were seen to cause distortion. Light and electron microscopical observations confirmed a host cellular reaction around the xenoma, seen by the presence of eosinophile granule cells (EGCs), and some neutrophils. The occurrences of rodlet cells among the intestinal epithelial cells, and in close proximity to the xenoma wall, were observed in certain specimens. Outside the xenoma wall, macrophage aggregates (MAs) were commonly encountered. Within the xenoma wall, the presence of eosinophile granular cells immunoreactive to the anti-serotonin serum was also recorded. Further immunohistochemical tests revealed that a high number of nerve fibres running along the white lateral muscle fibres were immunoreactive to bombesin-, galanin-, and leu-enkephalin-antisera. Nerve fibres containing bombesin- and leu-enkephalin-like substances were also observed in the connective inflammatory tissue around the protozoan cyst, while neurons in the spinal ganglia were immunoreactive to met-enkephalin, and serotonin antisera. The control for the specificity of immunohistochemical reactions was performed using preabsorption tests of each antiserum with the corresponding antigen, and no immunoreactivity was noticed. The data presented are discussed in relation to the occurrence of G. anomala, which alters the pattern of nerve fibres present in the host. Specifically, the protozoan induces a response in the stickleback nervous system, the reaction of which is revealed through the application of immunohistochemical techniques.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Collection and assessment of data from the Emilia-Romagna Region on the occurrence of congenital heart defects in order to identify an homogeneous group of patients for further aetiologic and genetic studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS The present study is based on 1549 stillborn and live born babies affected by congenital heart defect out of 330,017 consecutive births (4.7 per 1000). RESULTS The frequency and type of congenital heart defects have been identified together with the sex ratio, associated extracardiac anomalies, chromosomal anomalies and the risk of precurrence in relatives. The impact of prenatal diagnosis on prevalence was low during the study period. CONCLUSIONS The study has provided epidemiological data for public health surveillance of congenital heart defects in the Emilia-Romagna region. The creation of a system for the nationwide recording of congenital heart defects designed with regard to the sources of ascertainment, the diagnostic criteria, and the system of classification is emphasised.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate left ventricular morphology and function in a large population of patients with beta thalassaemia. DESIGN Echo Doppler assessment of left ventricular function and correlation of cardiovascular data with haematological data. SETTING Thalassaemia unit in a tertiary referral centre. PATIENTS 197 young adults with beta thalassaemia, following an adequate transfusional and chelation treatment regimen, without clinical signs of cardiopulmonary involvement. The control group consisted of 213 healthy subjects. RESULTS Left ventricular volumes, mass index, and mass/volume ratio were increased. Diastolic and systolic shapes were different, the left ventricle maintaining an ellipsoidal shape. The ejection fraction was reduced, and was < 50% in 33 patients. Stroke volume and cardiac index were increased, and systemic vascular resistance was decreased. Fractional shortening and mean velocity of circumferential shortening were decreased. Meridional end systolic and peak systolic stress were increased, as was circumferential end systolic stress. The contractile state was reduced while the functional preload index did not differ. Left ventricular diastolic function, evaluated from the mitral inflow, showed a slightly prolonged isovolumic relaxation time, increased flow velocity integrals, and an increased E/A ratio. Among the haematological data, only serum ferritin showed a weak negative correlation with left ventricular ejection fraction. The patients with the highest serum ferritin (> 2500 ng/ml) had the lowest ejection fraction. CONCLUSIONS Patients with beta thalassaemia on an adequate transfusion and chelation treatment regimen show abnormal left ventricular remodelling with increased volumes, mass, and mass/volume ratio. Systolic chamber function and contractile state are reduced, with a slightly increased afterload. These findings seem mainly to be related to the increased cardiac output caused by chronic anaemia. Left ventricular performance is better preserved when chelation treatment is adjusted to maintain the serum ferritin concentration at < 1000 ng/ml.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine whether the administration of four different solid feeds would influence selected morphological and morpho-functional aspects of the rumen mucosa in veal calves. The fibrous supplementation of the liquid diet of veal calves has been provided by recent EU formulation (EC Council Directive 91/629/1991; EC Council Directive 97/2/1997). Twenty-five Holstein calves were assigned to either exclusively liquid diet (milk replacer, control), or pelleted feed, corn silage, extruded feed, dried corn silage. The morpho-functional effects of the fibre-containing diets were examined evaluating histological and histometrical characteristics of ruminal mucosa after the slaughter of calves. There were slight to severe histological abnormalities in the rumens of all animals examined. The severe histological abnormalities were present in calves given pelleted feed, corn silage, and extruded feed. Dried corn silage caused less ruminal damage. We found that the length and epithelial thickness of ruminal papillae were higher in control veal calves than in dietary fibre-supplemented animals. The results of the present study, even if partially, support the EU prescription in the use of fibre diets in veal calves as integration of the traditional milk replacer diet.

Abstract
The presence of intestinal helminths in the alimentary canal of brown trout, Salmo trutta L., can alter the number of cells that synthesize modulatory peptides. A total of 167 brown trout were collected from tributaries of the River Brenta (northern Italy), of which 119 (71.3%) specimens were infected with enteric helminths, 28 with the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis Müller, 1776 with intensity of infection ranging from 1 to 162 (18.57 +/- 30.79) worms per host and 67 fish with the cestode Cyathocephalus truncatus Pallas, 1781. Intensity of infection with C. truncatus ranged from 1 to 85 (6.87 +/- 12.59) per fish. In 24 fish there were concurrent infections of both species of helminths. The caecal and middle regions of the intestine were the most heavily parasitized. Immunohistochemical tests showed a decrease in endocrine cells (ECs) of the diffuse endocrine system (DES) positive to gastrin, cholecystokinin-8, bombesin and secretin antisera in the intestine of the infected trout. The number of ECs immunoreactive to anti-glucagon serum did not show differences in the digestive tract of uninfected brown trout and in conspecifics parasitized with P. laevis. The density of cells containing glucagon-like material was low in the fish parasitized with C. truncatus. The results suggest that endoparasitic helminths induce alterations in the DES of infected S. trutta.

Abstract
In this study, the distribution of IGF-I, IGF type I receptor (IGF-IR), and IGF-binding protein 2 (IGFBP-2) was investigated during larval and post-larval developmental stages of the shi drum (Umbrina cirrosa) by immunohistochemistry using antisera raised against Sparus aurata IGF-I and IGF-IR, and against mouse IGFBP-2. Immunoreactivity of the mitogenic marker PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) was used for assessment of cellular proliferation. Distribution of IGF-I mRNA was studied by in situ hybridization. IGF-I immunoreactivity was detected in liver and developing intestine already in 1-5 day post-hatching larvae. From day 11, immunostaining in the intestine was evident in the enterocytes of the anterior intestine and in the apical zone of the epithelium of developing posterior intestine. Positive reaction with IGF-I antibody was also detected in chondrocytes, in the epithelium of the skin, gills and in the central nervous system (CNS), and lateral muscle. At hatching IGF-IR immunoreactivity was already detectable in developing CNS, notochord, and skin. From day 6 immunostaining was evident in the olfactory epithelium, in eyes and from day 11 in the developing olfactory bulbs and CNS. Positive reaction with IGF-IR antibody was also detected in chondrocytes, in the epithelium of the skin, gills, heart, and in the lateral muscle. Immunoreactive IGFBP-2, as detected by anti-mouse IGFBP-2 antiserum, exhibited generally a similar distribution pattern to that of IGF-I and IGF-IR. In situ hybridization, which has been performed by using riboprobes from S. aurata cDNA, revealed IGF-I mRNA in skeletal musculature, liver, and CNS. These data strongly suggest a role for the IGF system during development and growth of U. cirrosa.

Abstract
Altogether 429.139 consecutive births were surveyed during the eighteen years study period by the Emilia-Romagna Registry. Among these, 2147 newborns with congenital heart defects (CHD) (prevalence 5 per 1000) were detected within the first week of life. There were 1607 isolated CHDs and 540 cases had other associated defects. During the study period an increase in prevalence/rate of CHDs was observed (from 3.1 per 1000 in 1980 to over 7 per 1000 in 1998), particularly isolated CHDs increased from 2.2 to 6 per 1000, while the prevalence rate of CHDs cases with other associated anomalies was constant ranging from 1 to 2 per 1000. The increase of isolated CHDs was due to the increased number of "minor" lesions such as ventricular (VSD) and atrial septal defect. The apparent increase in birth prevalence of CHD mainly results from improved diagnosis due to widespread use of color-doppler ecocardiography. As in other studies, a significant shift in the sex-ratio has been documented: a male predominance in transposition of great arteries, left hypoplastic heart and aortic stenosis (male/female ratio 2.2, 2.3, 4.5 respectively) were found; while VSD had a slight female excess (male/female ratio 0.96). The study confirmed that the majority of the affected parents were mothers. The recurrence risk of a cardiac defect in first degree relatives was 2.3%, while the recurrence risk of isolated conotruncal defects was 3.9%. Out of 47 cases with isolated conotruncal defects 4 had microdeletion of chromosome 22q11.2 and concerning the first degree relatives in one case the father had the deletion without CHD.

Abstract
The gut of adult sturgeon was examined. The oesophageal mucosa contained numerous caliciform cells, synthesizing both neutral and acidic glycoconjugates, the latter of the sialylated type. The deep tunica propria-submucosa contained lobules of multilocular adipose tissue, specially abundant during the cold season. The oesophageal tunica muscularis was made up of a large sheath of striated muscle fibres, arranged orthogonally to a thin, subserous smooth muscle layer. The siphon-shaped stomach showed a ciliated epithelium in cardiac and gastric proper gland zones, where tubular glands were present in the tunica propria. The columnar cells which composed the superficial epithelium and gastric pits were demonstrated to synthesize almost exclusively neutral glycoconjugates. Appendices pyloricae constituted a glandular body equipped with intestinal mucosa. The intestinal mucosa was organized in folds, containing numerous caliciform cells which synthesized neutral or acidic glycoconjugates, the latter either of the sialylated and sulphated type. The sulphoglycoconjugates were more abundant in the caliciform cells of the distal intestinal tracts. The tunica propria-submucosa of the spiral valve (medium intestine) contained lymphatic tissue and large lymphatic follicles. A muscularis mucosae was present only in the rectum, where in addition a peculiar granular cell type was present in the superficial tunica propria-submucosa, possibly related to defensive properties. The subserous connective tissue contained pancreatic lobules all along the stomach and intestine. The enteric nervous system showed some special aspects, the most intriguing of which was the presence of large, longitudinally oriented nerve bundles in the t. propria-submucosa of oesophagus and cardiac stomach. The nerve bundles contained, near unmyelinated nerves, some myelinated nerves, as well as neuronal bodies. Both these aspects are exceptional in vertebrates and obscure in their significance. The structural and histochemical aspects we here describe are in part different from those described for other fish. Some of these special features are possibly related with special functional roles, others require a deeper insight and different approaches to clarify them functionally.

Abstract
We present the aims, methodology and initial results from the Italian Multicentric Study for the registration and follow-up of congenital heart disease. The general aims are to measure the prevalence of congenital heart disease in different geographic areas of Italy, and to assess the survival and outcome of affected babies. During the years 1992 and 1993, eighteen centers for Pediatric Cardiology spread all over the Country enrolled 1445 new babies with congenital cardiac malformations from a population of 341,647 surveyed livebirths. The new cases were registered using the same methodologic criteria of the EUROCAT study in order to evaluate differences and/or similarities between the studies. The prevalence varied between 1.8% and 8.1%; the average being 4.6%. The large range in prevalence is presumed to be related to different customs and hierarchies in flow and referral of patients. We provide total prevalence of individual lesions, and distribution of sentinel cardiac anomalies, in the Italian study and compare them with EUROCAT. Isolated ventricular septal defect is the most common lesion (39%); followed by atrial septal defect (7.5%); pulmonary valvar stenosis (7.3%); atrioventricular septal defects (5.4%); patency of the arterial duct (3.8%); complete transposition (3.7%); tetralogy of Fallot (3.3%); aortic coarctation (2.4%); aortic valvar stenosis (2.2%); and left heart hypoplasia (1.8%). The echographic stratification of ventricular and atrial septal defects, by location and size, was in keeping with the findings of the EUROCAT study. Because of the recent widespread availability of color-Doppler techniques, the stratification of aortic and pulmonary valvar stenosis was an innovative approach in our study. Among the complex cardiovascular anomalies, double inlet ventricle and pulmonary atresia had a proportion of about 2% each; with double outlet right ventricle, common arterial trunk, Ebstein's malformation, tricuspid atresia, interrupted aortic arch and totally anomalous pulmonary venous connection having a proportion ranging from 0.5 to 0.8%. We discuss clinical features, such as frequency of extracardiac anomalies and familial aggregation of congenital heart disease, in comparison with the EUROCAT data.

Abstract
The growth regulatory activity of transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta) on chick embryo skin fibroblasts was compared in two developmental ages, days 7 and 14. The time course of 3H-thymidine incorporation, an S-phase marker of replication, was determined during 36 hr of TGFbeta treatment. Seven-day-old cells showed a prereplicative phase of 6 hr, and 14-day-old cells showed a prereplicative phase of 12 hr. DNA synthesis peaked at 24 hr in 7-day-old fibroblasts and was 10 times higher than that in 14-day-old fibroblasts. Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity and content of the natural polyamines spermine (Spm), spermidine (Spd), and putrescine (Put) differed during cell cycle. ODC activity peaked at 12 hr in 7-day-old cells and at 6 hr in 14-day-old cells. Its level was two times higher at day 7 and was associated with a greater content of ODC mRNA. The maximum of polyamine (PA) concentration was determined after 12 hr of treatment in 7-day-old cells and after 36 hr in 14-day-old cells. These findings indicate that the TGFbeta proliferative response of embryo fibroblasts changes during development and is associated with activation of the ODC/PA system. Cotreatment with alpha-difluoromethylornithine, an enzyme-activated irreversible inhibitor of ODC, did not reduced growth rate. Inhibition of ODC resulted in levels of Put and Spd comparable to that of quiescent fibroblasts, whereas Spm concentration remained higher. Because an altered ODC metabolism does not convey the effects of TGFbeta on DNA synthesis, the ODC/PA system may not play a role in the pathway of TGFbeta signaling.

Abstract
During embryonic development, the proper production of extracellular matrix molecules mediates morphogenetic processes involved in palatogenesis. In the present study, we investigated whether any differences exist in glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and collagen synthesis between palate fibroblasts from infants, with or without cleft palate, in two age ranges. Subsequently, the effects of diphenylhydantoin (PHT), a teratogen known to induce cleft palate in human and mammalian newborns, on extracellular matrix (ECM) production were studied. We found that cleft palate fibroblasts (CPFs) synthesize greater amounts of GAG and collagen than normal fibroblasts (NFs). CPFs produced less cellular hyaluronic acid (HA) and more sulphated GAG. HA was the principal GAG species in the medium, and its percentage was lower in one- to three-year-old CPFs. Cleft palate fibroblasts produced more extracellular chondroitin 4- and 6-sulphate (CS) and dermatan sulphate (DS). Associated with a higher production of sulphated GAG, we observed a higher synthesis of type III and type I collagen with a normal ratio of alpha2(I) to alpha1(I) chains. PHT treatment of NFs reduced collagen and GAG synthesis, with a marked effect on sulphated GAG. The drug changed collagen synthesis, whereas it did not affect GAG production in CPFs whose phenotype may already be impaired. These findings indicate that, in CPFs, modifications in the pattern of ECM components, which are most likely responsible for the anomalous development, persist in infants. In addition, NFs and CPFs with a different phenotype respond differently to PHT treatment.

Abstract
In order to elucidate the mechanisms determining the variability in the proteoglycan structure and the factors involved in this determination, we treated chick embryo skin fibroblasts with beta-D-xyloside to obtain glycosaminoglycan chains deprived of core proteins, and with different cytokines (transforming growth factor alpha and beta, interleukin-1) to produce variability. The different cytokines specifically regulate both cellular and extracellular amount and composition of glycosaminoglycans. Beta-D-xyloside treatment does not change protein content and protein synthesis, whereas it increases overall extracellular sulphated glycosaminoglycan production, heparan sulphate and chondroitin sulphate content, and reduces that of dermatan sulphate. This indicates that the core protein regulates quantitative proteoglycan production, and probably directs (with appropriate signals) the core oligosaccharide bound to it to the right synthesizing enzymes. The modulatory action of the different cytokines on sulphated glycosaminoglycan production and classes remains, even though the core protein is absent. This indicates that the cytokines also act on the glycosyltransferases. Our results suggest that the proteoglycan production may be subject to a double control, one of which is at the level of the core protein and the other, mediated by environmental signals, at the level of glycosaminoglycan synthesizing enzymes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is multifactorial in origin, but its causes remain unknown. We previously proposed that prolongation of the QT interval on the electrocardiogram, possibly resulting from a developmental abnormality in cardiac sympathetic innervation, may increase the risk of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias and contribute to this devastating disorder. We prospectively tested this hypothesis. METHODS Between 1976 and 1994, we recorded electrocardiograms on the third or fourth day of life in 34,442 newborns and followed them prospectively for one year. The QT interval was analyzed with and without correction for the heart rate. RESULTS One-year follow-up data were available for 33,034 of the infants. There were 34 deaths, of which 24 were due to SIDS. The infants who died of SIDS had a longer corrected QT interval (QTc) than did the survivors (mean [+/-SD], 435+/-45 vs. 400+/-20 msec, P<0.01) and the infants who died from causes other than SIDS (393+/-24 msec, P<0.05). Moreover, 12 of the 24 SIDS victims but none of the other infants had a prolonged QTc (defined as a QTc greater than 440 msec). When the absolute QT interval was determined for similar cardiac-cycle lengths, it was found that 12 of the 24 infants who died of SIDS had a QT value exceeding the 97.5th percentile for the study group as a whole. The odds ratio for SIDS in infants with a prolonged QTc was 41.3 (95 percent confidence interval, 17.3 to 98.4). CONCLUSIONS Prolongation of the QT interval in the first week of life is strongly associated with SIDS. Neonatal electrocardiographic screening may permit the early identification of a substantial percentage of infants at risk for SIDS, and the institution of preventive measures may therefore be possible.

Abstract
In this study we have examined the relationship between growth factor-induced proliferation and ODC/polyamine levels. TGF beta promotes cell growth and enhances [3H]-thymidine incorporation in chick embryo fibroblasts maintained in a serum-depleted medium. The action on DNA synthesis declines in the second day of treatment. IL-1 does not affect proliferation or [3H]-thymidine incorporation either when it is added alone or in combination with TGF beta. The response of the cells to TGF beta is associated with a significant stimulation of ODC activity and Put, Spd levels together with an enhancement of the Spd/polyamines ratio. IL-1, which does not act on cell proliferation, fails to activate ODC and to increase polyamine levels, thus indicating that the ODC/polyamine system is most likely to be an important link in the chain of events that leads to growth factor-induced proliferation.

Abstract
During embryonic development, variations in the composition of the extracellular matrix (ECM) macromolecules influence bone tissue differentiation. We present novel findings on the in vitro phenotypic expression of periosteal fibroblasts obtained from patients affected by Apert's syndrome, a rare craniofacial malformation, and the effects that interleukins (ILs) induce on the phenotype. Apert fibroblasts synthesized greater quantities of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and intracellular type I collagen, and also produced more type III collagen and fibronectin. The amount of hyaluronic acid (HA) secreted by Apert fibroblasts was much higher than that secreted by normal fibroblasts, but, as the absolute values of heparan sulphate (HS), chondroitin sulphate (CS) and dermatan sulphate (DS) also rose in Apert media, the HA-sulphated GAG ratio was similar in the media obtained from both populations. Both ILs triggered elevations of HA in normal cells, although relative percentage secretion remained unaltered, but significantly reduced HA secretion by Apert cells. IL-1 significantly increased CS in normal and Apert media, whereas IL-6 enhanced HS and DS in media of both populations. HA-sulphated GAG ratio decreased in Apert media after IL treatment. Both ILs boosted fibronectin production by Apert fibroblasts, whereas IL-1 increased type III but not type I collagen. Taken together, these data demonstrate that the synthesis and secretion of ECM macromolecules are markedly altered in Apert fibroblasts. The fact that treatment with ILs further modifies the Apert phenotype suggests that ILs may be implicated in the pathophysiology of the malformations during skull morphogenesis.

Abstract
The aim of the present study is to contribute to the knowledge of the natural history of cardiac rhabdomyoma in children with and without tuberous sclerosis. In a retrospective study, 33 children with cardiac rhabdomyoma were collected from three pediatric cardiology centres. In 30/33 patients tuberous sclerosis was associated. High prevalence of cardiac rhabdomyoma was found in infancy, with 21/23 detected before the age of 1 year, and 11/33 before 1 month of age. Cardiac manifestations were present in 19 patients: cardiac rhythm disturbances were detected in 13; in 6/33 a Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome was documented, of which 4 presented paroxysmal arrhythmias. Obstructive or regurgitative phenomena were present in 5; and in 2 patients surgical removal proved necessary. With the exception of one tumoural mass in the right atrium, all 77 tumours were located somewhere in the ventricles, including at atrio-ventricular valve level. Because of spontaneous regression of most of the tumoural masses, treatment should at first be symptomatic, while surgical removal is required only in life-threatening conditions, as documented in 2 of our 33 patients.
